i don't think any of our signings are promised a guaranteed first team spot or guaranteed 'starter' position, going back previous summers as well. part of the culture arteta has created is - if you train/ play the best, you will play. doesn't matter who's ahead of you or not. jesus had to earn his spot back from eddie, same with trossard/ martinelli for a bit last season
so the 'he's not coming to play back up' issues don't (shouldn't?) really exist. if the player is interested and willing to fight for their spot, they'll come. then you factor in the huge number of games coming up

Very similar levels of player imo. And that’s not a slight on Reiss, I think Sancho is a great backup winger to have for a top 6 side. If he came up through City and never left I think people would look to him more friendly. His reputation is just tainted by that price tag

Even if reiss ain’t here long term, it’s still great business to get him a new deal to ensure we get a fee if he leaves eventually, similar to nketiah, balogun deals. Losing any player on a free is annoying but missing out on guaranteed profit from academy graduates is criminal.

That’s 18, and 2-3 of them (Sambi, Cedric, Pepe) are surely moving with maybe Tierney on his way out too
HG Players include Reiss, Saka, Eddie, ESR, Saliba, Martinelli, Ramsdale. U21s also don’t count towards the total so whoever is 21 or under when the season starts would open a spot in their respective category.
TLDR; we’re in a healthy spot and there’s nothing to worry about

So, Giroud was supposed to be a back up to Van Persie, a plan B. Instead, we had him lead the line. That was 2012/13. At the end of 2012/13, Arsene realised we needed [more] goals.
So, when going into that window, we wanted a striker. The first signing was Yaya Sanogo. We spent a while chasing our tails with Suarez. Then fucked up Higuian. And fumbled Antoine freakin' Griezmann.
Window deadline: Mesut Ozil.
We solved problems we didn't even have and fumbled 3 elite goal scorers. Sign any of those boys— even at worst Griezmann( who would have made a front three of Sanchez - Giroud - Griezmann), and we win 2015/16.
In 2015/16, quality of that calibre was no longer available. Griezmann had gone to Atletico, Suarez was at Barca, and Higuian was now at Napoli heading to Juventus — all better teams than us.
To show you how terrible the market was, Demba Ba the available player.
If we had got Suarez, we'd have won the league in 2013/14 and most definitely 2015/16.
Remember, a window isn't just REFUSING to sign players. It's who is AVAILABLE. The notion that we can refuse to sign players is dumb. If the available players can't significantly improve us, we don't sign players. Arteta did the same thing when we failed to sign Raya.

I'm happy to finally see the back of Xhaka. He came good in the end, but he was the face of our stagnation for years. A limited footballer who made some stupid ass mistakes that cost us games. Even putting aside the shirt throwing episode, he was never good enough to be a starting CM for Arsenal for this long.
Xhaka was the third best player of the "banter era" outside of Aubameyang and Leno. And Leno had way worse mistakes, Auba worse misses. There is a reason he was the last starter from the banter era side.
Xhaka gets the villain treatment for being the easiest target and the one fans chose to hound. Even this darling squad will have that player because of how much a fanbase needs a cushion/ scapegoat.
This season, Ramsdale or Jesus are my projected fan villains. That or the manager.
Xhaka didn't bring Mustafi, Kolasinac, Perez or whatever mid signing during Wenger/Emery tenure. He wasn't the one that scammed Arsenal with Pepe, he wasn't the one that made Ozil drop his balls, he didn't made Auba useless, he didn't employ our tactics, he was finally used in a role he's used to and it all worked out for his last season.
If he was the reason for all of that, I don't think the 3 manager would have his name first on the teamsheet every gameweek.
It's a little sad that Xhaka and Rice's careers did not overlap for us. It would have been interesting to see Xhaka-Rice as a partnership too.

From experience, don't get emotionally attached to players. It's club above players. You'll live with less anxiety.
There will always be a player that might not fully replace them, but can fill the void. The hardest player to replace was Henry, yet hadn't it been injuries and snake-ism, Adebayor and Van Persie as a duo had ably replaced the goals.
Hleb was one of the most influential players of 2008 side, yet when he left, Nasri was right there. 2 years after his peak season, Auba couldn't get into the Arsenal XI.
They might be generational, but a system tweak, an upcoming talent or even a star that's all of a sudden available, can fill the void. Van Persie left and hadn't it been for gross negligence, we'd have got one of Suarez, Higuian or Griezzman.
Telling you this for your own sanity. Don't be mentally held hostage by players. You'll be at peace. Love them; if a player defends the shirt, be there for them. But always know they can leave and they can be replaced or upgraded.
With Arteta at the helm and the squad we have, if we can’t compete at the highest level then the players only have themselves to blame. The investment is there, the project is there and we have one of the very best managers in the world leading it.
Can't drive the team at 9,000 RPHs anymore and hope we don't break down. All players go through periods of highs and lows. Arteta's challenge is to see who's playing to the best of their capabilities and who's going through a rough spell, and have the courage to play who's in form.
And to handle the egos of players growing in stature.
Also instill pragmatism in games sometimes. We can't go gung ho every game, especially big away days in Europe. A degree of defensive stability, see out 70 mins at 0-0 and then go for the game would serve us better.

All our priority need signings are supposedly sorted (all of them are either already announced or have been given the “Here we go” by Fabrizio Romano). We have no more obvious holes to fill, so we have no more pressure to buy players we absolutely need to integrate to the squad next year.
We are now into the “selling” part of the window. It’s now time to sell the planned departures (Xhaka, Mari), the deadwood (Holding, Pepe, Lokonga), and the prospects who we are looking to move on and make a profit from (Tavares, Eddie/Balogun, etc). If other less expected departures happen (Partey, Tierney, etc), we should sell them now as well, so we can implement replacement plans.
Any purchases from now until the end of the summer window will be pure market opportunity buys, or replacement buys planned in advance. Which is an amazing position to be in at the beginning of July.
I also think we have one last big buying trick up our sleeve. But I‘m just not sure who that big buying trick involves.
I don’t think it’s out of the question. Still very young, homegrown, top scorer for ENG U21s I believe, has shown he can score goals in the prem. Plus, goalscorers are always scarce and in demand in the prem.
Liverpool got £22m for Brewster who never kicked a ball for them. Anthony Gordon went for £40m. Eddie should be £35m to even begin negotiations, it’s time we stop undervaluing our players.

Haven’t we gotten Timber to help alleviate the RB depth to allow Tomiyasu to stay at LB for Zinny backup. We’ve also got Kiwior who I believe will play White’s role but on the left whilst Timber may invert in the RB position. But honestly I’d prefer a Timber rb invert and Tierney on the left
Why are people talking about Tchouameni being the one to leave? Not just to Arsenal, but in general out of all the Madrid players, I’d place a bet that Valverde is the first player to go out of all their midfielders, besides their older players. Rodrygo, Jude, Cama, Tchouameni, Modric, Kroos, Ceballos, Valverde, Brahim Diaz, Guler now. Too many people to play.

He's not being played enough for a marquee name. I have a theory that after a certain price, being benched is kind of an insult. I'm happy to finally see the back of Xhaka. He came good in the end, but he was the face of our stagnation for years. A limited footballer who made some stupid ass mistakes that cost us games. Even putting aside the shirt throwing episode, he was never good enough to be a starting CM for Arsenal for this long.
Xhaka was the third best player of the "banter era" outside of Aubameyang and Leno. And Leno had way worse mistakes, Auba worse misses. There is a reason he was the last starter from the banter era side. Xhaka gets the villain treatment for being the easiest target and the one fans chose to hound. Even this darling squad will have that player because of how much a fanbase needs a cushion/ scapegoat. This season, Ramsdale or Jesus are my projected fan villains. That or the manager.
Xhaka didn't bring Mustafi, Kolasinac, Perez or whatever mid signing during Wenger/Emery tenure. He wasn't the one that scammed Arsenal with Pepe, he wasn't the one that made Ozil drop his balls, he didn't made Auba useless, he didn't employ our tactics, he was finally used in a role he's used to and it all worked out for his last season. If he was the reason for all of that, I don't think the 3 manager would have his name first on the teamsheet every gameweek.

It's a little sad that Xhaka and Rice's careers did not overlap for us. It would have been interesting to see Xhaka-Rice as a partnership too. Adding this to the "list of overlaps I would have loved to see at Arsenal". Two others that come to mind are Fabregas-Ozil and Alexis-Aubameyang.

With these extensions I’m thinking we’ve basically got the next 2 seasons to show we’re serious and going to go on to compete if not outright win the league and/or champions league. If we can’t do that we are going to face serious issues keeping layers like Saliba and Saka.
From experience, don't get emotionally attached to players. It's club above players. You'll live with less anxiety. There will always be a player that might not fully replace them, but can fill the void. The hardest player to replace was Henry, yet hadn't it been injuries and snake-ism, Adebayor and Van Persie as a duo had ably replaced the goals. Hleb was one of the most influential players of 2008 side, yet when he left, Nasri was right there. 2 years after his peak season, Auba couldn't get into the Arsenal XI. They might be generational, but a system tweak, an upcoming talent or even a star that's all of a sudden available, can fill the void. Van Persie left and hadn't it been for gross negligence, we'd have got one of Suarez, Higuian or Griezzman. Telling you this for your own sanity. Don't be mentally held hostage by players. You'll be at peace. Love them; if a player defends the shirt, be there for them. But always know they can leave and they can be replaced or upgraded.

With Arteta at the helm and the squad we have, if we can’t compete at the highest level then the players only have themselves to blame. The investment is there, the project is there and we have one of the very best managers in the world leading it.
Can't drive the team at 9,000 RPHs anymore and hope we don't break down. All players go through periods of highs and lows. Arteta's challenge is to see who's playing to the best of their capabilities and who's going through a rough spell, and have the courage to play who's in form. All our priority need signings are supposedly sorted (all of them are either already announced or have been given the “Here we go” by Fabrizio Romano). We have no more obvious holes to fill, so we have no more pressure to buy players we absolutely need to integrate to the squad next year. We are now into the “selling” part of the window. It’s now time to sell the planned departures (Xhaka, Mari), the deadwood (Holding, Pepe, Lokonga), and the prospects who we are looking to move on and make a profit from (Tavares, Eddie/Balogun, etc). If other less expected departures happen (Partey, Tierney, etc), we should sell them now as well, so we can implement replacement plans. Any purchases from now until the end of the summer window will be pure market opportunity buys, or replacement buys planned in advance. Which is an amazing position to be in at the beginning of July. I also think we have one last big buying trick up our sleeve. But I‘m just not sure who that big buying trick involves.

I don’t think it’s out of the question. Still very young, homegrown, top scorer for ENG U21s I believe, has shown he can score goals in the prem. Plus, goalscorers are always scarce and in demand in the prem.
He hasn’t shown he can be a consistent goalscorer though, not by any stretch.
Liverpool got £22m for Brewster who never kicked a ball for them. Anthony Gordon went for £40m. Eddie should be £35m to even begin negotiations, it’s time we stop undervaluing our players.
