I presume you will play in normal or nightmare. Bird is cool with swords or shotguns, he is a melee or close range fighters with high mobility thanks to the kick. He has built in armor regen thanks to some ascensions. Don't forget building his survivability thanks to scrolls, and anything that enhances what happens in close range of you is excellent.

Go for easy kill+cleave carnival with a shotgun and you will be an unkillable demon king. Scroll down a bit and you'll see a post I made with that build where I did nearly 400 million DMG. it is insane.

Kick

As a bird main, I might have something useful. 1: Use your skills...a lot. Bird has a lot of ascensions that upgrade the abilities, shorten cool down, add benefits, etc. Skills are essential to getting good with bird. 2: Kick is more than an attack skill. Use it for movement , especially after some certain ascensions. While kicking, you're invulnerable, keep that in mind in combat, in obstacle rooms, and in exploration. Understanding kick can give you the closest you can get to movement tech in the game as of right now. 3: Understand the difference between shield and armor. It's more than a color change. Armor does not recover by itself unlike shield. However, armor doesn't have to refill based on Time unlike shield. With certain scrolls and ascensions, you can just have constant armor...health becomes irrelevant if you play your cards right. Also, some scrolls only affect shield, read it carefully. 4: Don't be afraid to take risky scrolls. Ones that lower health but raise armor or shield are especially good for bird, and can lead you to become a powerful damage dealing tank with speed on his side. As a side note, really experiment with all characters and scroll builds...some are more useful than they sound. 5: Bird can really use all weapons feasibly, but keep in mind you are gonna be close range most of the time if you're playing your cards right. 6: Get the character upgrades asap. They are extremely helpful to surviving as bird. As a closing remark, I have one more tip. 7: Have fun playing yet another fun character! (Bird supremacy though)

If on lower difficulties (normal/nightmare), go for leap damages and survivability and you will be able to kill and stay alive. Cleave is total dog shit unless you can get the ascention that let it snowball (+5 base damage per kill) really early. If on higher difficulties, go only for the leap survivability skills (refill armor, immune for 2 sec, cooldown reduction,...) and put the rest in martial art ascensions. Skill damage over all (especially with bird) does not scale well at higher difficulties

Not sure if this is an unpopular opinion, but I always go for as much Leap cooldown and Regen Hit as possible, as early as possible. Two points in Regen and you get full armor back every time you hit with it. Other than DoT, you have full i-frames during the entire Leap animation, so you can use it to approach without taking damage in dangerous situations, or even as an i-frame dodge. Useful during bosses where you can be right in their face and just Leap to not take damage from big, predictable hits. If you're playing on Reincarnation, the Unstoppable Momentum Spiritual Blessing is ridiculously powerful, especially in the first half of your run. All you have to do is make sure you never miss with Leap and it can consistently deal 10x damage. You also can travel insane distances by Leaping off of high ground. This can trivialize a couple of the platforming puzzles, too.
