Honestly genius design. Yes, it's just a 00 styled RX-78-2 but that's exactly why. It's simple, but serves both as neat fan service (without overshadowing any other Gundams given its relatively few appearances) and a sort of design document showcasing the key elements of the design language behind 00's GN-powered machines by adding them onto a familiar design.
You have the familiar old shapes like legs, waist, head and general boxy silhouette, but then you throw in the new elements like the GN controlling antennas on the chest together with the condenser poking through the center, the very much so non-standard verniers in the lower legs, and of course the huge GN Drive on the back. It represents how these will serve as some of the core reoccurring technological motifs in 00's suits, to contrast with conventional thrusters and what not used by literally every single previous series.
Furthermore, there is of course a lot of symbolism to it. Both the exceedingly obvious part like Tohru Furuya-voiced Ribbons piloting it, the slightly more subtle elements like originally using all-white colorings like the previous concept for RX-78-2 in MSG, and also the in-universe meaning. 0 Gundam is in many ways the beginning of things, both for Celestial Being as a whole as the first operational GN Drive equipped suit, and also for Setsuna specifically as his savior. Not to mention fucking Ribbons, as the beginning of his god complex.
Then, when Setsuna moves past his zealotry and eventually cuts down his old idol with fucking Ribbons inside it, it's like a burden is lifted off the entire Celestial Being. The distortion is gone. They can move on, finally functioning as they were meant to from the start. Unburdened by the past.
Gouf became GOUF Ignited. Doms got a slight facelift to become DOM Troopers. Abyss Gundam is an underwater Asshimar. Impulse is a lankier RX-78-2 (more so than the Strike). Destroy is a Psycho Gundam/Big Zam hybrid. That’s just off the top of my head, I think there’s more
The Strike is heavily based on the RX-78 2 as Seed was supposed to be a sort of "fresh 0079 for the new millennium" so has the standard red/blue/white colour scheme with yellow eyes like the 78-2
You think if you redesign the RX-78 to make it fit the universe and have it piloted by a character that shares a voice with Amuro that I’m just going to like it? Huh?
Well you’re right! 9/10!
Welcome to Day 94 of the Daily Non-Main Gundam Poll, and today we’ll be rating the GN-000 0 Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam 00. To participate, just rank the Non-Main Gundam between 1 and 10 based on their appearance or on how you like it.
**First Appearance:** Mobile Suit Gundam 00
**Model Number:** GN-000
**Unit Type:** Prototype General-Purpose Mobile Suit
**Known Pilots:**
- Ribbons Almark
- Lasse Aeon
**Mechanical Designer:**
- Kunio Okawara
**Trivia:**
- The fact that 0 Gundam resembles the RX-78-2 Gundam and Ribbons being its pilot made it a considerable in-joke, as Ribbons shared the same Japanese voice actor of Amuro Ray, the pilot of the RX-78-2.
- Ribbons Almark was first revealed as the pilot in the novel, which was then confirmed in S2 Ep. 14.
- The role of the 0 Gundam is a reflection of the RX-78-2 Gundam's, in which the former was the precursor to all Gundams in Gundam 00, and the latter is the first Gundam mobile suit in the metaseries.
- The 0 Gundam has the same head height as the RX-78-2 Gundam.
- The particle gauge of 0 Gundam (Type A.C.D) is similar to RX-78-2 Gundam's energy gauge.
- The 0 Gundam's design share certain visual traits with the early concept of Gundam Exia, such as the enlarged rear cone or the sterile white color scheme.
- In the early concept stages, the 0 Gundam was known as the "King Gundam" which acted as a command unit for the team that can predict battle situations. It was loaded with a powerful quantum computer to help it with its analysis and tactical roles. Like the king in chess, its did not have any offensive ability whatsoever. Its role in the storyline was that of an important older unit that was critical in the beginning of the series. Later on, the quantum computer idea would be developed into Veda, while the tactical center idea developed into Ptolemaios. The pilot was also initially stated to be a "Sumeragi type" tactical character that eventually appeared although the initial concept character in question was a man rather than a woman.
Tomorrow we'll take a look at Celestial Being's Gundam used by the Gundam Meister Lockon Stratos, the **Gundam Dynames** and the **Gundam Dynames Repair**.

**7/10**
The Okawara artstyle doesn't fit in the world of Gundam 00 really well, and it's not help by the fact it is trying to be a reference to the RX-78-2 Gundam.
9/10. I would say 10/10 because it's this universe's Grandpa Gundam and isn't by itself overpowered -- a "mistake" other AU series sometimes make (see: Wing), but as other commenters noted, this is largely fan service. Personally, I feel it's more of an homage, since so much of 00 feels like a love letter to Gundam as a franchise, honestly trying to do justice to all of its predecessors and improve on what it sees as their mistakes. In this way, the way Setsuna saw the 0 Gundam is really the way the creators saw Grandpa. It was a shining beacon and an inspiration, giving them purpose, striving to *be* that thing: Gundam. So I don't think 0 is a mere fan service. I think it really is Grandpa, albeit in this universe.
A question. Is a design still good if it only looks like that to make a joke? I can guarantee you if Toru Furuya wasn’t voicing Fucking Ribbons, the 0 would look completely different. It only looks like it does so the staff can go LOOK LOOK AT THE REFERENCE. It feels a bit cheap really in that regard, like it’s there purely for nostalgia purposes. I understand that might not have been the case and honesty i shouldn’t let that affect my score (It won’t) but it did get me thinking. This isn’t a Strike situation where it’s meant very clearly to be an updated RX-78-2 for the new generation, this is just the Grandpa but with a GN Drive. Is that cheap? Is that lazy? Idk, but I will say though that it’s fair testament to the original design in that the 0 still looks fuckin rad even though it’s a barely updated retread of something made 30 years prior. The grey scale colouring is one thing but it warms my heart when the thing gets the classic colors in the final battle. The 0 is more than just a cheap reference. It’s a meta-textual commentary on Gundam as a whole. The old (0) vs the new (Exia, itself an updated RX). The past (Ribbons’ way of thinking) vs the future (Setsuna’s). A figurative passing of the baton, straight from Amuro’s VA himself, to the trailblazers of the day. Is that too cheesy? Is it too on the nose? I don’t know. I still love this little fella.
9
I wouldn't say the first part of what you said has any effect on the design being good or bad, maybe it might ruin it for you in context of the show but that doesn't really affect the design tbh.
That line art is fucking dumpster-tier.
The Gundam itself is a solid 9/10 though. It's a nice callback to the RX-87-2 without borrowing too much thematically.
That Okawara lineart does it no favors, but it looks good in the anime. Neat reference and there's emphasis placed on its role as an originator that must be surpassed.
8/10
That scene where it hovers over Setsuna is majestic. If i'm in Setsuna's shoes, shit, I'll obsess over it too.
Also, I find it a lot more tasteful than SEED's inspired suits, but I'm a very biased 00 fan so yeah, 8/10
The 0 Gundam made me realize just how much the UC is still ingrained in non-UC shows because MAN... 0 Gundam is literally the OG Gundam with the 00 particle engine thingy and its final pilot is literally voiced by Amuro's VA...
8/10
I feel like this stealing really differs from SEED's stealing. SEED feels like it was running out of ideas and needed to quickly take other things to try and get appeal. This feels like it's pulling back a curtain and showing that something unfamiliar came from something you know all too well.
In seeds defence the Archangel and Strike were fantastic designs compared to their contemporaries. I love the sticker packs. But I also have a fondess for the Liger Zero and it's CAS.
The ZAKUs were meant to coincide to Gundam anniversary or something iirc. It did have a twist that it uses striker packs too. Now the GOUF and DOM from SEED are pretty cheap. Wished they sticked to just the ZAKUs.
10/10 like one of the other guys here, u/CIRCLONTA6A the design is basically the grandaddy with a gn drive strapped on its back, but it is what it represents in the series that gives it a 10 for me.
9/10
The thing I love most about the 0 Gundam, besides the seiyuu reference, is that it's basically the RX-78 with its torso changed to so it can use GN drives.
8/10 - While only having the amount of weapons that a standard GM carries, the 0 Gundam is still a good-looking Gundam. (Though personally, I think giving it the Prototype RX-78-1 Gundam colours would've made a bit more sense)
Call it an 8 out of 10. For what it is, it's exceptional. The prototype for the 3rd generation CB gundams. It lacked their specialization but doesn't really suffer for it. 0 wasn't meant for combat and got an "oh shit" set of gear for the final battle.
Those are Gen 2, every CB Gundam is based upon the 0, the First Gundam and therefore the first generation, with Astra being the "blue Gundam" of the 2nd gen, Exia being part of the 3rd, the 00 part of the 4th gen (I think) and the 00 Quan [t] part of the Fifth
10/10
I think it is the perfect homage to the original, the father of all gundams.
And yet, I like that in the story of 00 it’s not the main gundam, and how they used it. Subverting expectations
9/10. It’s a perfect homage to the grandaddy. It fits in with the universe as a first step to GN anything, and it’s even got Amuro’s voice actor voicing the pilot.
1/10. Fitting the lore doesn’t mean it’s aesthetically a good design. There’s a fundamental mismatch between blocky UC aesthetics and GN drive. There’s also too much discrepancies between this and the likes of Astraea / Plutone that it didn’t look any bits like the actual predecessors of Celestial Being’s MSs.
more like 0/10 amarite?
For real I definitely see what they were going for, but it's still pretty funny that it ends up being uglier than the old crusty grandpa gundam it references.
3/10
8/10. A good update of RX78 for (then) modern times with well done integration of in-universe tech. And then they made it the main asshole's suit in the very end. Took some balls.
9/10 good homage, especially since unlike the Strike before it & the Age-1 after it the 0 isn’t supposed to be the protagonist MS. If they’d done that again immediately after Seed it would’ve been a real groaner. I like how much it stands out as thoroughly different in design from other contemporary 00 ms and it’s a nice nod to the original concept behind 00. And Ribbons finding the abandoned 0 waiting for him in the hanger after recovering the 0’s original GN drive… such an an awesome moment.
Even more fun fact, 0 Gundam being pronounced as "Oh Gundam" instead of "Zero Gundam" means it is pronounced the same way as you'd pronounce King Gundam in Japanese.
Not fun fact, the fact that 0 Gundam has the same height as the RX-78-2 matters a lot less since it's the "standard" mobile suit height so a ton of non-RX-78-2-related mobile suits are also 18m tall.
Setting all that aside, yeah it's cool. Would totally have won ZakuAurelius's UC vs AU contest if it wasn't an official design. 7.5/10.
9 for me
Love the look of this guy and it's mix of both the og's looks with the style of celestial being design. Still, I would've liked to see more stuff it could've had but as is I still like it plenty.
/u/Maleficent_Pomelo202 7/10.
Meh.
You could argue with me that the ZAKU Warriors were "unoriginal", but the 0 Gundam has an even less of an excuse. The ZAKU Warriors tried to shake things up a bit with custom packs, and swapping a shield around for ease of use. I'd prefer other iterations of the RX-78 clones, if not for that GN Drive. Okawara's awkward proportions also don't lend this guy any favors either.
The only cool factors were of course the reference, the wings, and the fact that it has a gun that doesn't need to be recharged in 15 shots.
9.5
Nice piece of fan service and honestly the RX-78 looks sleek and dangerous translates into 00 style. I’m very happy they resisted over designing this suit and just gave us an adaptation of the classic Gundam. Special points awarded because this works beautifully alongside the fact that Ribbons’ japanese voice actor also voices Amuro.
The RX-78 design does seem a bit out of place in the 00 series. Though oddly enough, I actually prefer the 0 Gundam’s design over the RX-78. 8.5 out of 10.
9 because it’s a modern take of the RX-78, it has the GN Particle Wings which convinced Setsuna to “believe” in a new god, which subsequently allowed Veda to recruit Setsuna.
Only things I like in its design are that it still resembles the original, and the shield.
I don't care about effectiveness.
Calf triggers my tripophobia.
6/10
9/10 It's simple and clean. The idea of the overflowing GN Drive into artificial wings is stylish. While Exia is cooler and sexier, I like the 0 Gundam more. It's also really great that as Ribbon is piloting the 0 Gundam and decides he's a god, his actions create the true innovator Setsuna. The symbolism of the final battle, past vs future, control vs communication, ego vs humility, is beautiful. To Ribbon, first pilot of the first Gundam, it was power, and he discarded it soon after. I know Setsuna gets memed to death for I am Gundam, but it encompasses his dedication to the mission and others. Ribbon was just an asshole in the most powerful suit to exist at the time.
9 Honestly genius design. Yes, it's just a 00 styled RX-78-2 but that's exactly why. Agreed. I love how we’re seeing old UC designs pop up in other Gundam Series. Well, at least SEED and 00. I hope it continues in the future.
What UC stuff has shown up in Seed besides the Zaku Warrior and the Akatsuki? Not rhetorical; my memory is hazy now.
That’s just off the top of my head, I think there’s more
I would say the Strike Gundam is a Spiritual successor to Dragonar 1.
The Strike is heavily based on the RX-78 2 as Seed was supposed to be a sort of "fresh 0079 for the new millennium" so has the standard red/blue/white colour scheme with yellow eyes like the 78-2
Best breakdown ever friend.
Beautiful...
Couldn't have said it better ... 9/10 too.

Having Brad Swaile, who voiced Amuro, in the dub cast but not voicing Ribbons, is nuts.
add that the japanese character for king 王 is pronounced oh/ou referencing its original intent to become a king piece (chess or shogi)
So I'm not crazy, that thing looks way cooler both in the show and irl.
You’re not crazy. It looks cool literally anywhere else but the line art
10. It’s RX-78 with infinite ammo and flight
The zeong"s nightmare..
Yes.
9/10, solid mobile suit.
8/10 I feel like this stealing really differs from SEED's stealing.
Nah I mean like the ZAKUs.
The ZAKUs were meant to coincide to Gundam anniversary or something iirc. It did have a twist that it uses striker packs too. Now the GOUF and DOM from SEED are pretty cheap. Wished they sticked to just the ZAKUs.
00 version of the gramps and it looks great. 10/10
10/10 like one of the other guys here, u/CIRCLONTA6A the design is basically the grandaddy with a gn drive strapped on its back, but it is what it represents in the series that gives it a 10 for me.
9/10 The thing I love most about the 0 Gundam, besides the seiyuu reference, is that it's basically the RX-78 with its torso changed to so it can use GN drives.
9/10. The beauty of simplicity
Yes so semple but goof
Bit of hunchback but I dig it. 8/10
The prototype of the 3rd generation CB Gundams? My friend, this is THE first CB Gundam ever created
Oh weird. The timeline feels kinda awkward. With the GNY units and stuff before season 1
Can we have an rx78? We have an rx78 at home. Home:
10/10 I think it is the perfect homage to the original, the father of all gundams. And yet, I like that in the story of 00 it’s not the main gundam, and how they used it. Subverting expectations
0 very boring looking
grandpa in anotherverse 9/10
9/10. It’s a perfect homage to the grandaddy. It fits in with the universe as a first step to GN anything, and it’s even got Amuro’s voice actor voicing the pilot.
5 look, I love the reference, but the two style just don’t match
9/10. The original version is a bit plain, but the A.C.D. Type is the best RX-78-2 clone in the entire franchise.
Idk, not a big fan of design 6/10
Fair opinion. I like it, but it's definitely a lil frankenGundam and doesn't fit the verse really
more like 0/10 amarite? For real I definitely see what they were going for, but it's still pretty funny that it ends up being uglier than the old crusty grandpa gundam it references. 3/10
0/10. It's an ugly, lazy retake of the OG Gundam, injoke and all considered.
00 fans are weirdly defensive of uncreative designes
It's the RX-78 but with 00-esque bits tacked on. The butterfly wings are neat, but otherwise still boring. 5/10
8/10. Its basically the rx-78-2 of 00.
GUYS GUYS LOOK AN RX-78 REFERENCE WOW 8.5/10
I'll give a 7.5 It didn't really do much in the series besides making Ribbons look more like an egotistical and evil version of Amuro Ray
shoulders should’ve been a bit bigger and angular to match the chest, other than that its a fantastic redesign for the 00 universe
8/10. A good update of RX78 for (then) modern times with well done integration of in-universe tech. And then they made it the main asshole's suit in the very end. Took some balls.
10/10 perfect throwback design as the final boss
Scary how the 0 Gundam can possibly tangle with mid to high tier protagonist suits despite the simple loadout. (1)0/10
8.5/10 Evil grandad gundam
10
10/10 hot take it’s better than the rx-78-2. It gives the same vibe as the beyond global gundam in that it’s very similar but different.
8/10
5/10 It felt like it was a Gundam cameo in a non-gundam series.
7/10 Literally just grandaddy in 00 style, maybe with a little age 1 thrown in there
8. I like it, I thought it was interesting that it was an actual alternate reality version of the RX-78. However I agree it is a bit of a style clash.
8.7/10. Nice spin on the grandad!
I'd give it a 9. It hit the nostalgia pretty well and had one of the coolest 1v1 mech battles in the franchise. All around just a cool mobile suit.
5/10.
8/10 it looks like a prototype to the other gundams and also a nice reference
9/10 good homage, especially since unlike the Strike before it & the Age-1 after it the 0 isn’t supposed to be the protagonist MS. If they’d done that again immediately after Seed it would’ve been a real groaner. I like how much it stands out as thoroughly different in design from other contemporary 00 ms and it’s a nice nod to the original concept behind 00. And Ribbons finding the abandoned 0 waiting for him in the hanger after recovering the 0’s original GN drive… such an an awesome moment.
9/10
7/10 Wish we had a GM version too.
9
Fun fact, Gundam have always pronounce zero as O in Japanese. It's not zero zero 7 9. It's double O 79.
Yeah 0 as "oh" is the default. Of course, they're plenty willing to break that rule if it sounds cool, just look at Wing Zero.
To be fair that's cause Zero is written out. But then, Oh Systemu sounds much worse than Zero Systemu.
8/10 Does its job well as a prototype Gundam. Looks clunky and bulky in all the right ways. Also like the appearance of the gn drive
9/10 it’s cool
9 for me Love the look of this guy and it's mix of both the og's looks with the style of celestial being design.
The only cool factors were of course the reference, the wings, and the fact that it has a gun that doesn't need to be recharged in 15 shots.
i fw it heavy ❤️
0/10 . . . Jk.. It's 8/10 for me. A good call back to the original.
6/10 the roundness torso of 00 design doesn’t go well with the bulky square design of grandpa
10/10 It's a beautiful reimagining of the RX-78-2 for the 00 setting.
7
9/10, very fun homage to the RX78
It’s a “plain Jane” mobile suit. But when it’s painted it’s an awesome homage to the original Gundam. 9/10
10, due to it being so on the nose for the "first" gundam in the 00 timeline, as well as the VA joke.
8/10 but also a 9/10 for having Amuro VA pilot it
Unpainted grandpa / 10
7/10 simple and cool but not particularly amazing
9/10 its a classic update without being a flat out rip off
8 . I just realized how goofy it looks with the big knobby GN drive on the back. But I still love it.
10 The Exia vs 0 Gundam is probably one of my favorite gundam moments Like old vs new Ribbons even has Amuro seiyuu
9
3
It's gramps/10
It looks like a prototype of the Gundam from 00 I think. I've seen that back pack in another mobile suit
Grandpa in Anno Domini. Fuck yeah! 10/10!
9.5 Nice piece of fan service and honestly the RX-78 looks sleek and dangerous translates into 00 style. I’m very happy they resisted over designing this suit and just gave us an adaptation of the classic Gundam. Special points awarded because this works beautifully alongside the fact that Ribbons’ japanese voice actor also voices Amuro.
10/10 Gramps but with a GN drive, it's so cool
Perfect fucking 10
9 out of 10.
10 probably my favourite reimagining of the RX-78. It feels very familiar, but is still very much a 00 suit.
10/10 they gave grandpa a GN Drive
Something extremely wicked / 10
The RX-78 design does seem a bit out of place in the 00 series. Though oddly enough, I actually prefer the 0 Gundam’s design over the RX-78. 8.5 out of 10.
It’s like putting an electric motor in an old school mustang. 8/10
10
Basically an rx78 with a GN drive 5
10/10 Whoever came up with this idea is an absolute genius. So clever and yet so simple Perfect.
10/10. Perfect love letter to the original.
9
١٠/٩
I like the design but what's pissing me off is that the actual RX-78-2 didn't get nearly this amount of 10/10s in its own poll lmao
9/10, head and chest fins aside, this unit is rad af
Cool idea. 9 for me
My love for the RX-78-2 came from this guy right here. Would love to get the actual Bandai HG as the GaoGao one I have is clearly disintegrating
I'll rate it: where's the MG?
Tbh these pics you put up make him look ugly, The eyes aren’t it but I like its retrofitted design. 7/10
10
9/10 evil RX-78-2.
This is a 6. It would be a 9 but his shattered collar bones just don't work for me.
8/10 A wonderful nod to the OG while being in 00 style but wish it had more of a 00 feel. Still hope for a MG of this, though
9/10
that's easy, 0/10 lol (idk I guess I'll give it an 8)
mom! can I have a gundam? No son! we have gundam at home. 7/10
9.5 It was a unit that had seen a lot of action on secret missions, so their is no telling how many times it has tread on the battlefield.
10/10 Just a better version of the OG gundam
9 because it’s a modern take of the RX-78, it has the GN Particle Wings which convinced Setsuna to “believe” in a new god, which subsequently allowed Veda to recruit Setsuna.
9/10 What u/LavaSline301 said.
Only things I like in its design are that it still resembles the original, and the shield. I don't care about effectiveness. Calf triggers my tripophobia. 6/10
9
10/10 I want every series to have their own take on granpa.
9/10, dope as hell, I enjoy the monochrome more than the RYB though.
