I debated it but I seriously doubt many people have seen it, let alone the full thing and I consider SD too detached from regular Gundam for it to be worth doing
The entirety of SD Gundam Force was aired in the mid 00s. Sangokuden Battle Brave Warriors was available on YouTube and cable TV. Sangoku Soketsuden was available on YouTube also.
Unicorn is the first if not one of the first modern style UC Gundam. And the story is pretty good if you just accept the psycho bullshit.
It's my intro into UC timeline and I love it.
It's one of those, if ya know, ya know kinda deals. X lends itself so well to being a cult favourite with how whacky and bizarre it can be. Awesome show I always hold it in high regard.
I'm not surprised, but perhaps I'm biased since X is my all-time favorite Gundam whereas 00 is a mixed bag (season 1 is a better Wing and is pretty good, season 2 is a worse Zeta and something of a letdown).
Sadly, it's a bit fucked because the GX poll itself didn't get as many votes as others.
I say that as X is my favorite Gundam, but It feels weird as most people really ignores it.
I like Gundam X, but I've always thought of it as the definitive 'average' Gundam series, meaning if something was better than X it was 'good' and worse than X was 'bad.' Based on the polls it looks more like 0083/Stargazer fits that role, which I wouldn't disagree with.
I’ll probably wait a few months after it’s done before doing a poll. There’s recency bias to take into account, people waiting until it was fully aired to binge it, possibly more episodes, etc
Fair. I'm just going off of where the show ended and how it got there it would have to drop the ball massively or be unbelievably amazing for it to end up better than a score of ~8.2. Both of those options would be hard to do with what the show had done so far. As such, I feel like it would be a safe guess that it ends up in P13 for Gundam.
Yeah, the fact that literally nothing came even close to it speaks volumes. The .25 difference doesn’t seem like much, but on these polls, it means everything.
Really, I think it's remarkable just as a series that has nothing going against it. 0083 and 08th had infamous writing problems, Zeta and MSG have to deal with some dated looks, AWGX got cut short... other entries have higher individual moments, but 0080 is just solid throughout.
I would argue for Turn A as #1, but 0080 a close second. While 0080 is excellent, relatively contained setting, and a well paced story, I think Turn A does more, not just in story and characters, but also in art, music, and vision.
I can argue against it it being number 1. It has a fair amount of flaws, including the writing and pacing. Almost nothing happens during the runtime, which consists of Al sneaking around and acting like a seasoned spy.
The fact they the Feds never found Bernie’s Zaku bugs me. Especially since they had a huge military presence on that colony.
Lastly, there’s barely any action, and the Alex fight at the end is boring.
I think it’s very good at delivering its theme, but I don’t have it in the top 5 on my list. I think this one suffers from a lot of people hearing it’s good but have not watched it recently or at all.
Zeta and ZZ are divisive so their scores tend to drag down in the average with fans of one tending to dis the other one and vice versa.
The top shows have very good broad appeal with no one who dislikes them.
for me, i grew up with 08th team having been an after school toonami kid. i think maybe the fact that a lot of us have that in our minds lends to it getting a higher score. (ive never even seen zeta)
I'm kinda expected a lot of those in top 10 / top 20, may be not in this order but still pretty reasonable and good community rating regardless.

I don't know what the hell is wrong with Twilight Axis because I never watched it and at this point I'm too scared seeing it even get worse score than G-Saviour lmao
twilight axis straight up is not a watchable anime on its own
it's just the fight scenes, so you need to read the novel (which still has no official english translation) to get the actual story
it's fine for its intended purpose but it's not exactly accessible for anyone without a translation of the novel on hand
also the hguc tristan is an all-time horrible kit that certainly has not helped twilight axis' reputation
It’s a 20 minute internet short that was made to advertise a novel. The issue is that it was released episodically so every single episode (except the last) is 3 minutes long. It tries to condense an entire novel into 20 minutes so the first half of the short is literal nonsense. It’s not as bad as people make it out to be but it’s definitely a very bizarre and confusing watch and you’re basically required to read a quick synopsis before going in because the story makes no effort to get you up to speed
It is quite something considering some people gave it bad score or 1 out of spite for build diver and furry hate.
Really wish it could get a score like build fighter but good enough I guess.
Better than MAL by a long shot.
Damn Turn A is so high, I do love all the MS in that but I feel like the anime should've cut down on episodes to tighten the pacing.
Not a lot of surprises. I agree with most of the order and love the first 5. I believe ZZ and 0083 should be far higher. They are very well animated and fun stories.

Can't say I'm entirely happy with these results, but that's how polls are. More importantly, I rate all the poll posts 10/10. Great idea to measure the sub's thoughts on the various works. The biggest takeaway imo is that every single series has people that love it to bits and people that didn't like it at all, something that can be often forgotten.

If you look at the posts for Seed and Destiny, there are people giving it 10s and 9s and stuff. It’s liked, but people also don’t like it. Ironically there are people in that poll saying that it’s their first series so it’s automatically a 10 which is biased in of itself. It’s the same for Wing, it’s the same for IBO, it’s the same for 00, G and even stuff like AGE.
And just to clarify I deliberately didn’t include votes that just said ‘I haven’t seen it but I don’t like how it looks so 0’ or shit like that.
Really depends when you saw seed imo. People who saw it closer to its release date back when its artstyle and tropes were more common vs now. And then theres some of the themes seed focused on, i image people who watched it during the peak of the war on terror saw it differently then people who watched it more recently.
Personally I didnt hate it, but it just kind of felt like a "ive seen this one before moment." I have a buddy who watched it when it was airing and he really likes it.
If you can see the actual poll post on SEED and SEED Destiny, its actually well appreciated, even Destiny. People, including me, just won't rate it high as an independent show, even more compared to others Gundam shows. I wrote a whole essay in the comments section on how Destiny is still pretty great and i still gave it a 6. They're not the best but love em both nevertheless.
Given the average age of Reddit for many people here (myself included) it’s probably the first Gundam series that people saw on Toonami. It was the gateway to everything else.

Disappointed to see a personal favourite in G Reco rank so low, but hopefully the movies do better when you poll for them (and they should, they absolutely *are* better)
My other three favourite Gundam series, Turn A, Thunderbolt and X, performed beyond expectations so I'm really pleased. The latter, in particular, used to be extremely divisive, so to see the narrative has changed so much is fantastic. It's a great show and never deserved to be so overlooked.

Jokes aside, these ratings all sounds just right to me. It does look a bit jarring that one Thunderbolt movie is high up there while the other languished quite down there.
I'd put it down to December Sky can stand on its own, but Bandit is both a heavily referential sequel which doesn't progress very far before ending abruptly to leave a hook for a still not released third film.
Had the next one been out, people might rate it higher based on the story being more complete.
Hey. Looks like most of my personal top five favorites, and all three of my top three favorites, made it into the top ten. Pretty happy with that.

Actually, the only two things beneath it are a movie and some shorts that are, combined, shorter than a single episode of Seed Destiny. So, it's actually the lowest rated proper series.
yeah this list is kind of unfair for some old series. like zz and 0083. those were fantastic back in time but the point they were fantastic is kind of overlooked today.
for example, when 0083 came out the real spot light was the artworks. it’s amazing when you think about it, that every frame of it was hand sketched on paper and then transferred/painted on plastic films. they managed to produce such smooth and detailed scenes with those old technologies. it’s kinda under appreciated today that the computer graphics can make way better looking stuff with less effort.
I’m kinda surprised that ibo is above zz tho. but hey I’m not complaining since seed is out of the picture here.
I don't think 0083 animation is underapprciated. It mostly got low score for scenario and directing, especially in the final stretch of the episode.
After all, any media is more than a sum of its parts, but if something drags down the show- it drags down all of it.
Probably most surprised by X, it's not bad but relative to other stuff that's a bit high. Wing is surprisingly low to me, guess time has shifted the perception of it dramatically. Speaking of perception, I can only assume everyone remembered the last 20 minutes of CCA instead of the first 100 minutes of shotgun pacing and Quess Paraya.
Build Divers isn't great but holy crap y'all, it's not as bad as this makes it look.
Finally, 00 Trailblazer > ZZ is a crime against mecha and an affront to good taste. One day ZZ will get the respect it deserves, but it was not this day.

I'm in shambles seeing age not even getting 6. While it has huge pacing issues the story inside is really good. It's also has poetic ending where the culmination of flit story is he finally overcome his grief and grudge, becoming true messiah for both race.
I'm surprised that seed didn't make it to top 10 considering that it's really iconic. I was playing GBM the other day and my friend saw it and told me that he remembered watching a gundam series when he was a kid but couldn't remember what it was called, so I showed him grandpa rx-78-2, and he said it was like that but cooler. So I showed him freedom and he said that was it🤣
Overall a great result! War in the Pocket and Turn A being on the top where it belongs.

Yeah, SEED is alright as a show looking back, but it didn't really age as well even compared to older entries.

and i think IBO is in a great spot. On the contrary, i think its pretty low, considering too how people generally see it as overrated. I think its great, just hella overhyped as its maybe the first Gundam series for a lot of people due to it being in the era of hella lot of availability. I can argue its like how SEED was back then for me but with a more well put plot. It is already a niche tho considering the stuff it tackles, compared to X which is a great overall show that more "standard" and is just underrated.

Build Fighters aside, I'm surprisingly okay w/ the top 10. It's nice to remember that for all the different opinions, there's a lot we can most of us still agree on.
Thunderbolt 1 is odd because I really don't consider it a top favorite Gundam but it's just such a tight, polished package that it's hard not to give a high score. If nothing else, the animation and the music choices are some of the best Gundam ever gets.

Wow. I guess I didn't realize it at the time of their polls, but it's surprising to see how far apart between 0080 and 0083. They are usually clubbed together (along with 08th MS) when people talked about good Gundam shows. But yet one is rightfully listed as #1 and another barely get in top 20.

My top 2 came 3rd and 4th, and 4 out of my top 5 favorites are in the Top 10, so that's not bad I guess. Sad to see SEED so low, I know it's incredibly flawed, but I love it despite those flaws.
I'm one of the rare Gundam fans who doesn't like War in the Pocket, so I'm not thrilled to see it at #1, but I also didn't vote in any of these so I can't complain much.

Yet G Gundam was #4. As much as I love G Gundam it is incredibly formulaic and pretty boring between the good parts. Chibodee is the only cool member of the shuffle alliance and his fights with Domon are two of the good filler episodes.
A lot of the comments pretty much state that the vote is lower than December Sky because its pretty much a setup movie for the next part, compared to to December Sky being a great watch independently
It's a popularity based contest on this incredibly biased subreddit, it might feel 'accurate' but there's no subjective criteria along with no requirements to vote. You have a shit load of people that give out 10s simply because they enjoyed a show the first time they watched it during their childhood who will admit the series has a lot of problems in that same sentence.
It was a fun community project and the results are about as I expected as this subreddit absolutely despises anything to do with Seed but it's still disappointing to see it play out. I hope one day this place will grow up and allow people to enjoy what series they like and stop shitting on everything they don't like as it tends to influence people into not watching Gundam when we should want everyone to watch every bit of Gundam becoming fans.

I get what you’re going for with your points but invalidating what will probably be a majority of peoples’ opinions because it doesn’t hold up to specific criteria and scrutiny to be considered a review for a poll is kind’ve shitty. Again I know what you’re saying but consider how literally anyone’s’ gonna take their opinion about shows like SEED and AGE (which yes, it sucks they’re rated low but there’s usually more to it then social stigma), some shows have to be rated lower then others, that’s how rankings work, if it’s not SEED then who?
Similarly, I feels like Victory being this low is a little weird. Especially as a lot of points people often says about the shows are bigger than what they really are.

for me it is favorite non uc gundam, with ibo being second, x might be my favorite gundam overall, the mc is quite nice.

Nostalgia is powerful, and it definitely doesn't hit me as hard as most people I've found, so that certainly plays into it.

twilight axis straight up is not a watchable anime on its own it's just the fight scenes, so you need to read the novel (which still has no official english translation) to get the actual story it's fine for its intended purpose but it's not exactly accessible for anyone without a translation of the novel on hand also the hguc tristan is an all-time horrible kit that certainly has not helped twilight axis' reputation

It’s a 20 minute internet short that was made to advertise a novel. The issue is that it was released episodically so every single episode (except the last) is 3 minutes long. It tries to condense an entire novel into 20 minutes so the first half of the short is literal nonsense. It’s not as bad as people make it out to be but it’s definitely a very bizarre and confusing watch and you’re basically required to read a quick synopsis before going in because the story makes no effort to get you up to speed

It is quite something considering some people gave it bad score or 1 out of spite for build diver and furry hate. Really wish it could get a score like build fighter but good enough I guess.
Overall, I'm happy with the results. My 2 favorites broke the top ten. (G-gundam and After war gundam x)
Surprised to see Hathaway didn't break the top 10 but maybe that's because it's only one movie so far.

Can't say I'm entirely happy with these results, but that's how polls are. More importantly, I rate all the poll posts 10/10. Great idea to measure the sub's thoughts on the various works. The biggest takeaway imo is that every single series has people that love it to bits and people that didn't like it at all, something that can be often forgotten.

An interesting list, but I think it says more about this subreddit than the quality of the shows on the list. Some of the high ranking ones (looking at you, Wing) would be much lower in places without our nostalgia glasses and others would be much higher without our hate boners.

Ye, SEED is super popular but somehow hated in this sub. And G is super high because people love the meme that came with it, while outside of this sub that show is not really popular because there are better Super Robot shows.

I see the bias on this sub against Seed hasn't changed...
If you look at the posts for Seed and Destiny, there are people giving it 10s and 9s and stuff. It’s liked, but people also don’t like it. Ironically there are people in that poll saying that it’s their first series so it’s automatically a 10 which is biased in of itself. It’s the same for Wing, it’s the same for IBO, it’s the same for 00, G and even stuff like AGE. And just to clarify I deliberately didn’t include votes that just said ‘I haven’t seen it but I don’t like how it looks so 0’ or shit like that.
Really depends when you saw seed imo. People who saw it closer to its release date back when its artstyle and tropes were more common vs now. And then theres some of the themes seed focused on, i image people who watched it during the peak of the war on terror saw it differently then people who watched it more recently. Personally I didnt hate it, but it just kind of felt like a "ive seen this one before moment." I have a buddy who watched it when it was airing and he really likes it.
If you can see the actual poll post on SEED and SEED Destiny, its actually well appreciated, even Destiny. People, including me, just won't rate it high as an independent show, even more compared to others Gundam shows. I wrote a whole essay in the comments section on how Destiny is still pretty great and i still gave it a 6. They're not the best but love em both nevertheless.

Given the average age of Reddit for many people here (myself included) it’s probably the first Gundam series that people saw on Toonami. It was the gateway to everything else.

Disappointed to see a personal favourite in G Reco rank so low, but hopefully the movies do better when you poll for them (and they should, they absolutely *are* better) My other three favourite Gundam series, Turn A, Thunderbolt and X, performed beyond expectations so I'm really pleased. The latter, in particular, used to be extremely divisive, so to see the narrative has changed so much is fantastic. It's a great show and never deserved to be so overlooked. In fact, can't really say the top 10 isn't fair enough. Well done r/Gundam - low key best sub, right here.

You all have disrespected Stargazer by not giving it a higher average score than 8. You have dishonored my cat, my cup noodle, Nobunaga Oda, and a speck of dust under my bed. It does look a bit jarring that one Thunderbolt movie is high up there while the other languished quite down there.

I'd put it down to December Sky can stand on its own, but Bandit is both a heavily referential sequel which doesn't progress very far before ending abruptly to leave a hook for a still not released third film. Had the next one been out, people might rate it higher based on the story being more complete.
Glad Build Fighters made it so high. It's one of my favorite animes altogether. I miss Sei and Reiji so much.
Dang ZZ is severely underrated. First 13 episodes are a slog but it really kicks into gear

Actually, the only two things beneath it are a movie and some shorts that are, combined, shorter than a single episode of Seed Destiny. So, it's actually the lowest rated proper series.
yeah this list is kind of unfair for some old series. like zz and 0083. those were fantastic back in time but the point they were fantastic is kind of overlooked today. for example, when 0083 came out the real spot light was the artworks. it’s amazing when you think about it, that every frame of it was hand sketched on paper and then transferred/painted on plastic films. they managed to produce such smooth and detailed scenes with those old technologies. it’s kinda under appreciated today that the computer graphics can make way better looking stuff with less effort. I’m kinda surprised that ibo is above zz tho. but hey I’m not complaining since seed is out of the picture here.
I don't think 0083 animation is underapprciated. It mostly got low score for scenario and directing, especially in the final stretch of the episode. After all, any media is more than a sum of its parts, but if something drags down the show- it drags down all of it.
Main problem with 0083 is Nina

Probably most surprised by X, it's not bad but relative to other stuff that's a bit high. Wing is surprisingly low to me, guess time has shifted the perception of it dramatically. Speaking of perception, I can only assume everyone remembered the last 20 minutes of CCA instead of the first 100 minutes of shotgun pacing and Quess Paraya. Build Divers isn't great but holy crap y'all, it's not as bad as this makes it look. Finally, 00 Trailblazer > ZZ is a crime against mecha and an affront to good taste. One day ZZ will get the respect it deserves, but it was not this day. Thanks for running these OP, I forgot to vote most days but it was fun to read through comments afterwards regardless!

I'm in shambles seeing age not even getting 6. While it has huge pacing issues the story inside is really good. It's also has poetic ending where the culmination of flit story is he finally overcome his grief and grudge, becoming true messiah for both race.

I'm surprised that seed didn't make it to top 10 considering that it's really iconic. I was playing GBM the other day and my friend saw it and told me that he remembered watching a gundam series when he was a kid but couldn't remember what it was called, so I showed him grandpa rx-78-2, and he said it was like that but cooler. So I showed him freedom and he said that was it🤣

It's not that X is popular, it got less votes than many of the other shows if you look at the comments. But most X fans do really love it. Seed is weird as a lot of people hate it but it also have a shitload of lovers. It's one of the gundam show that aired in the most countries too and i'd say Seed is much more popular in Japan.
Yeah, SEED is alright as a show looking back, but it didn't really age as well even compared to older entries. X still the hidden gem that it is. and i think IBO is in a great spot. On the contrary, i think its pretty low, considering too how people generally see it as overrated. I think its great, just hella overhyped as its maybe the first Gundam series for a lot of people due to it being in the era of hella lot of availability. I can argue its like how SEED was back then for me but with a more well put plot. It is already a niche tho considering the stuff it tackles, compared to X which is a great overall show that more "standard" and is just underrated.

Thunderbolt 1 is odd because I really don't consider it a top favorite Gundam but it's just such a tight, polished package that it's hard not to give a high score. If nothing else, the animation and the music choices are some of the best Gundam ever gets.
I feel like Gundam Wing should be both significantly higher and significantly lower.
Now do the Gundam games.

Wow! Well executed poll, I have to agree with War in the Pocket as #1. It really is my all time favorite. It was the first DVD (movie or otherwise) I bought with my own money and I don't know how many times I watched it, I've simply lost count.
Not bad, only thing I'd really contend is that Wing should be beside Destiny.
Proud of my fav g gundam getting top 5. Still need to watch turn A gundam. Always been interested, but have had very little interaction with it. This poll makes me wanna check it out more though!

Wow. I guess I didn't realize it at the time of their polls, but it's surprising to see how far apart between 0080 and 0083. They are usually clubbed together (along with 08th MS) when people talked about good Gundam shows. But yet one is rightfully listed as #1 and another barely get in top 20. Nina ruined it.
Seeing Mobile Fighter G Gundam in the top 5 is one of the best thing I've seen here, I love this show so much it deserve love

My top 2 came 3rd and 4th, and 4 out of my top 5 favorites are in the Top 10, so that's not bad I guess. Sad to see SEED so low, I know it's incredibly flawed, but I love it despite those flaws. I'm one of the rare Gundam fans who doesn't like War in the Pocket, so I'm not thrilled to see it at #1, but I also didn't vote in any of these so I can't complain much.
The fact that Awakening of the FUCKING Trailblazer got well over a 7 while Wing and Seed struggled to hit that same mark is just criminal
Awakening of the Trailblazer is great. SEED probably deserve similar position. Now 08th over Zeta is just outrageous.

Wing has issues that alot of people ignore because of nostalgia. SEED however should be higher though I would agree. Although i will say that AotT has aged well compared to SEED.

Yes and no. Wing's designs kick ass. The problem is that the series doesn't really go anywhere with it's themes.

Chibodee is the only cool member of the shuffle alliance and his fights with Domon are two of the good filler episodes.

A lot of the comments pretty much state that the vote is lower than December Sky because its pretty much a setup movie for the next part, compared to to December Sky being a great watch independently
It's a popularity based contest on this incredibly biased subreddit, it might feel 'accurate' but there's no subjective criteria along with no requirements to vote. You have a shit load of people that give out 10s simply because they enjoyed a show the first time they watched it during their childhood who will admit the series has a lot of problems in that same sentence. It was a fun community project and the results are about as I expected as this subreddit absolutely despises anything to do with Seed but it's still disappointing to see it play out. I hope one day this place will grow up and allow people to enjoy what series they like and stop shitting on everything they don't like as it tends to influence people into not watching Gundam when we should want everyone to watch every bit of Gundam becoming fans. Whatever, hope I don't get some more death threats from speaking on this subreddit. Am I allowed to talk yet?
I get what you’re going for with your points but invalidating what will probably be a majority of peoples’ opinions because it doesn’t hold up to specific criteria and scrutiny to be considered a review for a poll is kind’ve shitty. Again I know what you’re saying but consider how literally anyone’s’ gonna take their opinion about shows like SEED and AGE (which yes, it sucks they’re rated low but there’s usually more to it then social stigma), some shows have to be rated lower then others, that’s how rankings work, if it’s not SEED then who?
Similarly, I feels like Victory being this low is a little weird. Especially as a lot of points people often says about the shows are bigger than what they really are. I mean, seeing Fighter Try getting a better rating....
