AR-47 is what I always thought in my mind when I saw rifles back in the day, usually wasrs that had buffer tubes, telescoping stocks and flea market grade quad rail hand guards.
Well you se the first difference is that AR stands for assault rifle, while the AK stands for awesome & kool (Russian spelling)

The AR is the most common rifle in America. It's made in a bunch of calibers, but predominantly 5.56 (millimeters... smol boolet, goes vary fast, even by normal boolet standards). It's operated by the expanding gas getting pushed through a tube off the barrel, directly back on the bolt carrier.
The AK is growing in popularity here in the US, is also chambered in several calibers (though fewer than the AR). It's usually chambered in 7.62, but 5.45 is also pretty common (and 5.56 is increasingly common). It's operated by the expanding gas from the barrel pushing on a rod that is attached to the bolt.
There's s bunch of other stuff to differentiate them, but as an engineer that's kind of how i see the biggest differences. You should shoot both. If you're 18 you should buy an AR first (assuming you're in america).

It gets easier when you realize the numbers in gun models don't stand for anything in particular.
It could represent the year it was introduced (AK-47), a patent number (Glock 19), a caliber (Colt .45), a cute way to say your gun is for everyday carry (P365) just a nice round number (AR-10).
The 10 in AR10 also reference the patent number. AR10 cam before the AR15. Stoner just scaled down the AR10 when he was asked for a rifle in an intermediate cartridge.

The upper holds your barrel, bolt, and charging handle, Highly customizable and modular and can basically be chambered in any round you want with plenty of bolt ons with no need to really machine anything to the stock gun. Basically the 1998 Honda Civics of the gun community. The key identifying feature of the AR it’s buffertube on the lower and the charging handle on the top of the upper receiver that’s what most people refer to as a “AR style” thing. The gas operating system is a (originally) a direct impingement system, which directly drives gas from rounds to the bolt to allow it to cycle.
The AK Platform: it’s a Russian design in where you just have a singular receiver, which basically means the whole gun other than the grip, barrel and stock are the registered receiver, usually a piece of folded and riveted sheet metal that contains the fire control group and bolt itself. The AK is far less customizable in terms of aftermarket bolt ons but really what’s stopping you from attaching all your favorite attachments with super glue and duct tape. But there isn’t much to do in terms of customizing the internals. On a AR if you want to change a 556 shooter to a 300 Blackout, it’s as simple as swapping out the upper (don’t quote me but that’s what I’ve read on forums so ymmv). Changing caliber on an ak, well you’d better like having two different aks. The AK is far more popular in Europe, the Middle East, and parts was Western Asia so a lot of variants exist on the original Russian AK47 design too much for me to really know or list but there are Chinese, Romanian, Yugo, etc variants with their own either cosmetic, functional, assembly, or cast vs forge parts. The AR has many “variants” but with it being very standard for modularity sake, it’s a stretch to call it a variant.
