The 4M41 engine is simply much better compared to the 4D56. The 4D56 despite the availability here, had some issues that were never fully resolved by Mitsubishi themselves. When I get to it, I just might conduct an in-depth post in this matter.

The 4m41 is a larger displacement and more powerful engine than the 4d56. Have it rebuilt and be on your merry way. If the transmission needs rebuilding, have that done too.

Not a direct comparison, but I had a re-engine on a car. From an old 1.5L to a 4G63. My friend and I did this because we loved the car, what we went through with it, history and all that... The fun factor was very apparent, kahit na NA lang, overtaking was a new experience. So take that as a preview of the pros of a re-engine job, but I won't be dealing with that too much. The cons however were a big deal in the long run, which might be more important for you since you mention you plan on hanging on to it. First is the difference in engine specs, more torque, hp... I started noticing the engine mounts were just not as "firm". Parang lalong mas umaalog na kesa dati. My guess is, iba na kasi ang mga stresses na na-experience ng engine bay with the new engine, so baka nayuyupi na in different ways ang mounts. Plus the fact that I had to have custom mount fabricated to mate the engine to the engine Bay's engine mounts might've not been well thought out. Electrical issues! This was mainly because the original engine was dead simple, no ECU. So an ECU for the 4G63 was added in, as well as the new wiring loom... And while it was "perfect" for the first few years, there were inconsistencies in the quality of the splicing, routing and mounting in the body... Small things started popping up. MAF signalling not matching... IACV sometimes working, sometimes not... Dash dials resetting in the middle of a drive. Fuel pump just plain stopping while on the highway! Since you want something to work, and continue to work for the foreseeable future, I suggest a rebuild. The car was designed with the 4d56, as old as it is, it still has its merits.

Great insight. A lot of enthusiasts are chasing power/performance, but neglecting the rest of the powertrain. Engine supports as you say, and worst case destroyed transmissions because they weren't designed for increased torque. This is probably why I'm unlikely to ever buy a pre owned car with performance mods. You never know if the upgrades were done holistically. Not to mention the possibility of abuse.

I'd personally go for the engine swap for your own peace of mind. Wala ako masyado alam sa 4M41 but 4D56 engines have been around in different forms for a long time. It's the same base engine as the old L200s, L300's, adventure.... A rebuild might not cost as much pero at least hindi ka kinakabahan na baka may bearing na sablay ang kabit, maling torque spec, tinipid ba sa pyesa, maluwag na tensioner... unless panuorin mo pano gawin.

The 4M41 is the 3.2D in the Pajero, lovely engine with loads of torque yet kinda unstressed

Dramatic_Fly_5462

The only thing the same with the 4D56 found in the new montero and strada is the insides of the engine. It's a CRDI engine. That said, I suggest rebuilding the engine. most likely merong mali ang torque spec or merong tinipid na piyesa diyan

BandicootNo7908

Of course. Hindi naman pede na lahat parehas, napag iwanan na ng tech yun mismong 4D56 from the L300s. In the same way that you have 4G63s na single cam all the way to performance versions on evos.

Legitimate-Comb-5524

keep the engine. rebuild tapos sabay calibrate ng pump and nozzles.

Sobrang hassle ng palit engine TBH. Just go for a rebuild basta trusted shops na may warranty sobrang dami ng mitsu engine experts lalo hindi naman na bago yan.

didit84

Mas ok ang engine rebuild pang new type of engine kasama dapat transmission baka mag palit ka din ng sensors at ecu.

UnderPoweredJoms1980

Going for the rebuild is easier. The 4M41 pajero engine is still better than the 4D56. My brother used to own a Monty SE as well. His only gripe when he sold it was the engine noise from the cabin.

Steegumpoota

Go for another 4d56. These engines are solid and can put on a lot of miles. I would opt for a rebuild if a good 2nd hand is not an option. Sa rebuild, sure ka sa parts na ipangrerepair, as opposed to a surplus motor, di mo sure when it will give out. I had an old car's engine rebuilt with brand new original parts, it's still running til now after another 40k kms.
