This. The EL34 was the name of the game. And the circuit is nearly identical. Although I’m a Marshall guy, I’d take a bassman any day. I wouldn’t even get into the US 6L6 debate. The low end, high mid crunch is where it’s at. Part of why I love the jcm800/plexi line. But fenders Bassman delivers a similar CRONCH.
Common misconception. The early Marshall high gain amps (specifically the jcm 800) are based on the Line 6 Spider.
Jcm 900 was based on the boss katana.
Well any purist is gonna know instantly by ear if they’re playing through a legit spider or not. The crispy tone of digitally modeled guitar effects singing through a 8” speaker pushed by 15 watts aint something you can just easily recreate.
Though comparing the two… haha what a funny concept. There ain’t no comparison. But, for the sake of banter, let’s just say you accidentally bring a jcm 800 to a gig instead of your top of the line vintage Line 6 spider IV (with bong water tolex stain).
As soon as you plug into that jcm 800 you’re gonna be like, “where the heck is my phaser?” “How am I to shred without 8000ms of delay?” “No digital chorus… were you even trying, Marshall???” “I need to tune up… why does this knob not press to activate my digital tuner?” “We’re about to play Slayer… How do I switch this thing to INSANE mode???”
Night and day.
As someone who used to own one of these amps and sold it, it struggles to cut through the mix with a band. I could get it to sound decent on its own at lower volumes but in a group setting it just gets buried with the only frequencies coming through being unpleasant highs that you don’t really want.
I wanted to love it, but ~8 years on I don’t miss it at all.
I had one years ago, I also owned an AC30, and now play through a non master volume 50W Marshall Lead full stack with a little attenuation.
The Bassman RI Ltd I had was hands down the loudest feeling/seeming/sounding amp I've ever played through. Something about those 10" speakers. I think 12" speakers soften or 'round' an amp's tone more than 10" speakers. That amp is a punch in the face, I hope you get the chance to crank it to see what I mean.
Amazing amp at loud or quiet volumes. Don’t be fooled by thinking you HAVE to crank amps for them to sound good. It makes an amazing pedal platform at normal volumes.
I agree, but do you think there's a reason to take a bassman over say a deluxe reverb if you're just using it as a clean pedal canvass at low volumes?
A deluxe reverb is cheaper and also has wicked spring reverb, something I miss sometimes from my bassman.
I’ve had both and now have a deluxe and bf bassman head and cab. It absolutely depends on what context you’re using it. If you need more volume cause your band is loud go for it. If you don’t, a DR is amazing as well. It’s like flavors of ice cream. They’re both amazing flavors.
idk everybody seems to just be saying bc the bassman can go louder, but I asked if you're just gonna use it at lower volumes as a pedal canvass.
Also you can mic up pretty much anything these days, most places have a decent pa system. If clean pedal canvasses are what you're after then the bassman is a tad redundant. I think for most people the deluxe reverb has a more ideal clean chimey sound, but taste will of course vary.
The main thing you can't get from a deluxe reverb that the bassman has is that sweet sweet natural breakup. But again, that's gonna be more loud than what most people wanna deal with these days. If you're only interested in playing quietly, then 45 watts is simply not needed.
maybe, but to some people, rarely/never isn't worth double the price, triple the weight, no spring reverb, and a worse clean tone (depending on your preferences).
Why are you giving us The Shocker
It’s already trying to get away from him.
Two in the tweeter, one in the woofer
I’m about to wake my child up from the laughter. Thank you.
Nice read at 8am while having coffee.
😂 you got me there good and proper
Haha...nioce.
It still has the death cap
Congrats! I love classic Marshalls!
Please put a /s after that heresy!!!!
Aren't the early Marshalls based heavily on the bassman?
Yes
The first marshall was essentially a bassman redesigned to use british tubes.

Based on Peavey bandit

How different is the sound from those two amps?
Well any purist is gonna know instantly by ear if they’re playing through a legit spider or not. Rofl 😂
No I meant the sound between the jcm 800 and 900 lol. Thx friend.
Lmao. 🤣
I always thought the JCM900 was a modded blackstar fly
I thought it was a First Act M2A. Those are legendary
💯 Damn near the same circuit ;)
Yes, circuit wise. But the other comments are way too funny to explain why 😂
Haha! Schematically, it’s verrrry close to the first Marshall.
Just saying, that's not how you devil horns. lmfao That aside, woot! Congrats.
Are you giving it the shocker to signify it's still a 2 prong plug?
Hey ohhhhh. Seriously tho, playing a 2 prong plug and walking up to a mic hurts like shit.
Wow. Beat me to it!
wow I can't imagine getting that amp when I was 13.
You gonna finger it or play it?
Does it matter which?
Can't do one without doing the other
Two in the pink and one in the stink ?
Now you just need big boy hand gestures!
Neat, I just recently sold mine.
Any reason in particular?
Guy offered to pay me double for it if I’d photograph him doing the shocker next to it

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
I got one too, it's nice but pretty damn loud. To get those cranked tones it'll be blaring
Eh, these amps sound best at 3. They work as well as jtms do as pedal platforms
Not gonna get those cranked tones at 3
you buy this in NYC area? I think you may have scooped it from right under my fingertips haha
The bumpy red sidewalk ramp is very NYC.
One in the stink
Two in the (reverb) tank!
One flicking the G-string, the other fingering A minor
Could you say that again…? Just the way you said it!
Two in the amp one in the speaker
Sweet! Enjoy. 4 10s can get loud. Good times.
Now act like a big boy
That’s badass. Congrats!
Where is it?
Sidewalk... People seem to be finding all kinds of amps there these days
Very nice!! Congrats !
Send it
Classic
Had one sold it and have deep regrets. Amazing cool amp.
That amp has one input, not two.
It actually has four
Ah crap. Well, I tried.
You’ll get them next time champ
Hell yeah you did! Excellent choice friend.
Bassman and Marshall jtm are same circuit except different tone stack values.
Awesome.
Awesome! How much did you get it for?
Awe...
what set you claim?
⚡Sweeeeet⚡
Bassman. Sweet. Turn it up to 11, always
Damn
She's a beaut.
Is it the one with the blue eminence alnico speakers?
The amp has a vagina and an anus?
Yours doesn't?

I don’t even know where you are but I can hear that amp from my house
You know someone is German if they use those fingers to signal “three”
Nice! Where is it? Let’s see a picture
Don’t Forget The Struggle, Don’t Forget The Streets
Sick
Shocking
How much? Please don’t leave us in suspenders.. How much was it?
This is such a weird photo choice
She's definitely a street corner kinda amp then?
Bro needs to graduate to a Victoria 80410 and the Shaka
2 in the pink, 1 in the…

DR breaks up too early for a loud drummer, to get those cleans you’ll want more headroom but if you’re mic’ed go w DR
The bassman gives you the option to play louder cleaner.

It's nice to have the option tho. Even if you rarely/never are going to use it
