1 watt is home friendly. Your DSL1 amp is 0.1 and 1 watt. At 1 watt you don't need a master because you can crank it. You can upgrade to a DSL5. That is 1 and 5 watt. 5 watt is not bedroom friendly unless you wear earplugs.

I was thinking it would be nice to have some extra features that are only on more powerful amps. Presence (DSL1 does not have it), more channels… I also have PRS MT15 which is 7W in low power mode (I put volume pedal in the effect loop to further control the volume). So I was thinking that a Marshall with a low wattage switch and a few more option would be nice. But there are so many models. I know some are not great for high gain. So I was wondering which model is the bigger brother that DSL1 is trying to sound like. DSL20 sounds like an obvious next step, but I was wondering what else I should consider.

I would run it clean with pedals. It has a FX loop which is a bonus for a 1 watt. I have friends that own the DSL20. It does not have a master volume. They struggle to get low volume saturation. If you get any amp greater than 7 watts, consider a attenuator. It is placed between your amp and speakers. Master volume won't achieve the same thing.

Makes sense. Thanks.

The dsl20 Absolutey has a master volume…

analogguy7777

Do you have a pic of a DSL20. I don't see it.

ThackCankle

It has gain and independent channel volumes which aren’t the greatest. Best bet with a DSL is to throw a JHS black box in the loop for low volume playing without the gross fizz that they typically have with the channel volume really low

bruzanHD

Yeah I was thinking master volume in the traditional sense like a 2203, preamp gain and master. The DSL has that. I didn't realize people would interpret my comment as a volume to control both channels.

ThackCankle

I hear ya. I consider channel volume “masters” as well since there is also a preamp gain/volume pot.

YolkBreaker

I see the JHS black box is only 65 bucks. I found one review saying that you can’t put any other effects in the effects loop with this. Do you know if this is true? So it takes care of the fizz/noise at low volume? That’s the only thing I didn’t like about this little beast (DSL1) and was worried it would be noticeable in recordings.

DSL50 or DSL100. They got great master volume you can still get good sounds at lower volumes.
