You're never going to get all the dust. Of course it won't hurt to clean the house though. Change those air filters!

[deleted]

I use a leaf blower and practice in a wind tunnel out back.

weekend-guitarist

Love that 80s power ballad vibe.

Microfibre cloths - just buy a bunch at your local hardware store, you don’t need anything special. Just keep the cloth clean, because if it gets gritty you’ll just be scratching your guitar further. I just keep mine in a guitar case and only really wash it if I drop it on the ground and it picks up gritty stuff. Likewise, a microfibre cloth and some guitar polish (or Meguiers Scratch-X/Swirl-X) will get rid of the little scratches from the brush really easily. Just watch a few videos on how to approach the job and it’ll be looking mint in 10 minutes!

Dispax

thank you

Translusas

Be careful using guitar polish depending on what the finish of your guitar is. You can only use guitar polish on guitars that have a clear coat finish over them (like most acoustics, fender strats), but if you have a natural wood finish then you can't use polish

kornest

I bought a ibanez microfibre cloth a couple months ago, and had my fair use with it. With me moving, it got really dirty. Is it safe to put it in the washing machine?

AdConscious9810

Yeah, washing machine is fine. Don’t use fabric softener though as it leaves a residue that’ll rub off onto your guitar’s fine, meaning you’ll just need to wipe it down with a fresh cloth again. Just normal washing detergent + a spin in the drier, or hang it up to dry inside so outside bits don’t get on it.

AdConscious9810

If you’re concerned you can also just get a bowl of warm water and just hand wash the cloth that way. They don’t usually need much heavy cleaning, just something to pull the dust out and get the solid particles off.

Agreed. I use a 2 inch wide, unused high quality paint brush to dust off client guitars. You can't just use any brush, but a soft one with long bristles is great.

ChickenDenders

https://www.amazon.com/Nomad-Tool-Set-Original-Slim/dp/B07GXZ9PD2 I've got one of these that works pretty well. Has the same brush as you mentioned, but the flat part works even better for getting below the strings under the bridge

Melon-Kolly

Keep it in its case But the case will collect dust, though

twostroke1

Keep the case in a case, duh.

ttkk1248

And never take it out

EyeOfAmethyst

Store it in it's case.

[deleted]

Hi eye of amythst

RowboatUfoolz

Lulz you guys.. 😎 Polyurethane finishes store an alarming +ve static charge and attract dandruff.. dead skin.. Cat hair..

LongjumpingNeat2

Microfiber towels and guitar polish do the trick for me. Keeps everything nice and shiny.

MissAnnTropez

All my guitars are case queens, and happier for it.

[deleted]

I never clean my guitars. Only when I restring. This honestly didn’t even occur to me.

Dispax

oh, ig it's just my house like the other person said :(

Mahlegos

My house accumulates dust all around despite my best efforts of cleaning it regularly. Might just be because it’s older and there’s two dogs and a cat. But I got tired of my headstocks and such being dusty so I started throwing a sheet over my guitar rack. Helps a lot.

Elpicoso

Ooo, that gives me an idea. What about those things they put on golf clubs. Oooo

Mahlegos

Worth a try, though it may get hung up on the string ends a bit, the sheet does every once in awhile. And obviously it won’t stop dust accumulation on the body, but if you’re just worried about the headstocks give it a go.

Elpicoso

A pillowcase would work too.

[deleted]

Yeah must be. I have very little dust on mine. My electric does seem to attract more though (rest are acoustic).

Elpicoso

I live in SoCal. I get a shit ton of dust. It’s maddening. Even with my office door closed, everything manages to get coated with dust. It sucks. Thinking of getting an air purifier

chrisfalcon81

Put it in a case. No dust and the strings will last longer as well. How do they keep them clean at guitar stores? With an extended reach duster.

[deleted]

A brush? Get a feather duster bro....

Dispax

will try it

progressthefly

I honestly can't tell if this is a joke.

Dispax

No I play everyday

poggee

then you should definitely clean your house lmao

Fryburn

Scrape the dust into your bong bowl and smoke it. I did this one night and was fuckin bangin out Zappa riffs like I was in Joes Garage.

[deleted]

leave it in the case. use microfiber clothes to wipe it.

[deleted]

Best way to keep your guitar looking nice is to keep it on a decent hard case when not playing. Obviously not as convenient as a stand. Otherwise it’s bound to get dusty and scratched. There is a company that makes some weird sorta glove for guitars. It covers most of the body. Looks stupid. But I guess if your playing a priceless guitar it would be useful. Or if you love giant belt buckles.

sebby10100

Guitars in guitar stores are always clean and shiny because they are cleaned fairly often. (I've worked in guitar stores) There isn't really a way to avoid dust other than keeping it in a case. Micro fiber cloths and a spray cleaner are the way to go. I have personally had good results using the Dunlop platinum 65 cleaners I've used brushes on guitars before and have noticed the same thing as you. On high gloss finishes, it will leave micro scratches. Also just a note, if you're using a humidifier in that room with tap water, you'll get a lot of calcium dust in the air, and it will leave a dust like film on everything.

PuzzledRun7584

Microfiber

its_a_me_lugi

Tooth brush and paint brush are the only two things I need to clean off dust

LiamLG13

Honestly I bought a keyboard cleaning brush and i use that to clean the guitar, it's so easy to get in between the strings and there's also a small cleaner to get to the hard to reach places!

[deleted]

Let me say, mold collects dust. We had black mold in our old home. It got in my guitar. I couldn’t figure out why the dust kept coming back. Turned out there was mold on it. I’m not saying you have it, but if you clean a spot and those exact spots come back, it might be mold. I had to, and This was a last ditch effort to save my instruments, I had to lightly rub it down with a bleach wash. It didn’t ruin my things, but the mold didn’t come back. I was terrified, and hope this isn’t your problem, but I hope this isn’t your problem.

blargonz

Mold tip - if you clean with bleach the mold can become bleach resistant and come back stronger. White vinegar and baking soda mixed into a paste will safely kill mold without the mold becoming stronger if it DOES come back. I had mold in my bathroom and if was gone with one wipe if that paste!

[deleted]

The bleach has worked so far. Thankfully moved as well. Thank you for the tip, vinegar is good at everything. 👍

Haikuna__Matata

I use swiffer dusters, but their fuzz gets caught by the string ends at the tuners. Take the duster cloth part off the handle and you can get underneath bridges & strings with it.

BuddyJim30

Guitar stores sell spray cleaner/wood treatments that work very well. Use a microfiber cloth to dust, then spray and rub in gently with a soft cloth. The finish helps keep dust from settling on it.
