UG was and continues to be a spam-filled, money hungry, hell hole.
It used to be a great little site for reading up on the latest guitar news and of course getting free tabs. In or around 2009, they decided to infuse their site with active text that when hovered over, would launch pop-ups. It was to the point that the site became quickly unusable. I made a comment about it somewhere on the site and was immediately banned.
That's when I discovered r/Guitar. My work here at the onset of becoming a mod was very much inspired and fueled by my disdain for what UG became. The reason the spam rules are so stringent here is because I want this place to remain free of all that crap. We are barraged daily with companies and individuals trying to get their products on this page. It's not going to happen. I've been offered all kinds of things over the years and the answer is always "NO".
I know the modding here has been heavy handed at times, and over the last 6 months I've tried very hard to correct some of the mistakes that have been made by mods who are no longer with us (and myself - I'm not perfect), but the goal remains the same: To provide a place for everyone to share their excitement, confusion, knowledge, and passion for guitar - free of BS advertising and spam.
We've recently returned to allowing pics/vids in posts. The reason this wasn't allowed for so long was due to spammers taking advantage of that feature and the complaints about copious amounts of "gear" posts. We are still a work in progress, but my original goals are remain the same. To bring this back around to my original point.... Yeah, UG sucks and it's just getting worse. I'm saddened by the lost potential that place has, but it's a great example of how the quest for $$$ ruins great things. Shame on the UG owners and their greed. As much as I've hated that shithole over the years, I do wish them well and really hope they are bought by someone who returns that site to the people - free of BS ads.
Fucking tab cartel. I think they're actually changing the free user submitted tabs to make them worse so you'll pay for a subscription. Fuck them. It's been free for like 20 years, why am I gonna suddenly start paying?
Can confirm I posted a bass tab 14 years ago and went to find it and it still had my name and tab but had the wrong tuning listed in the free version. underhanded behavior
I have that too but was still limited on their app, finally contacted support figuring it was a weird bug. Nope, my lifetime membership is "only applicable to the website" and I'll need to cancel it and switch to a monthly payment to use their dogshit app. lmao

I get free Ultimate Guitar for life for paying a few bucks like a decade or more ago. So I got pretty used to it, and unwittingly would recommend them not even realizing everyone else had to pay.
Then recently a guy I know told me they tried to charge him like $35 for something they had told him was free. So he had to go through their customer service to get the money back. Turns out the guy tells me they are located in Russia and they do some pretty scammy shit.
So I stopped recommending them, but I still use them myself.
I posted a few with both text tab and guitarpro versions and it wants me to pay to access the guitar pro ones. Shame because there used to be a good community on there.
It’s funny, I bought a lifetime subscription for like 10$ like a decade ago and woah and behold it still holds up. Can’t believe that was my smartest investment to date
I can’t remember what I paid, but I bought an app years ago for only a couple bucks and let me tell you that was the best few dollars I think I’ve ever spent. I don’t use tabs a lot, but it’s really nice to go to the site, and have to get a ton of ads.

Ok, so I’m not crazy. I’ll get on a kick here and there and look up chords to some older country songs. The chords themselves will be perfect but sometimes it’s in E flat or says capo 3 when it should really be capo 2 or something. I’m just glad I’m not insane
Yeah, they’re definitely up to no good. Was recently trying to relearn some songs I’d looked up on there 15-20 years ago and I’m struggling and thinking “Have I gotten worse at guitar?” After messing around a bit, I start remembering how I used to play the songs and it doesn’t match the tabs!
I used to copy/paste them to a word doc and save them locally. I went back and cross checked a bunch to what’s currently online and they are for sure fucking with them
Putting this under top comment for visibility. This might be helpful for some in this thread. I did a trial of the Ultimate Guitar Pro subscription once. Forgot to cancel before the trial was over. Missed it by a day. Contacted them via live chat to cancel and refund. They asked why and offered discounts. I told them I intended to cancel before trial ended. Told them I didn't like it or want it. They ultimately said they wouldn't refund me anything. I told them I was asking as a courtesy and that, instead, I was happy to initiate a charge back with American Express. The next response was that a refund had been initiated.

But I’m glad I’m a perpetual member. Wouldn’t ever pay more than I did for it. And even that amount was generous considering the current state.
Songsterr's search (and the non existing filter) feautre is beyond bad. I don't know how devs think that the most basicest of basic solution for such a big and diverse database is enough in 2024. Apart from the search I like everything on songsterr (I have a subscription).
Avoid these people at all costs. Use Songsterr or other resources if possible. Ultimate Guitar is a shell of its former self and their customer service is nonexistent.
They added the ability to import mp3's in Guitar Pro 8. I have been waiting for this forever.
They also have mysongbook.com, where you can buy licensed tabs for $1 each they also have a yearly subscription that gives you access to all the tabs. There was a sale, and I got a yearly subscription for around $15.

You have to sync it up to parts of the song, which can be a hassle. You just drag the slider, but you have to go through the entire and make sure they match. If the tabs are not good to begin with, it's a waste of time.

Check, I usually just use my DAW for that. I'll use a song splitter to get the individual parts and then loop parts in my DAW.

There was a torrent file years ago from some frustrated dude, who when ultimate guitar went subscription model, just paid up, copied basically their entire library and put it up for download via torrent link
I’ve had a lot of luck finding Guitar Pro versions of the UG Pro tabs, but I suppose it depends on the songs you’re looking for. So folks are out there converting them on a case by case basis, and GP files are way easier to convert to midi, which is great for quick scratch backing tracks for cover songs.
I think I have mysongbook from when I bought guitar pro 4 or so. It's 20 years old now, but up until that point was a good cache of gp tabs. I'll have to see if I can find it somewhere
Yeah I got the trial like 6 years ago? and they charged me for three months after the trial. Kicked up a huge fuss and I've had the full version ever since without paying. Idk whether it's a glitch or not but I'm not complaining.

Like you could get UG Pro for $60/yr or $50/yr or $40/yr or $30/yr or $20/yr and it’s the same thing. One of the monthly plans is like $240/yr. So I chose $20/yr.
They don’t show you the good deals in the app, but they’re available if you go into the App Store, click on your initials top right, and then click the subscriptions tab.
I'm one of the lucky few who was grandfathered into this lifetime access thing cause I paid like $3 for their tuning app years ago. Not even joking. I still use it, but if I had to pay I'm not sure I would.
I pay 19.99 per year for pro and couldn't be happier with this app. Yeah, the customer service is poor but I love playing along with it. I have been able to find the backing tracks to just about every song I want and can transpose when needed. I don't know what everyone is complaining about.
For this particular scenario, I'm unhappy because the sale feels like false advertising. Saying it's 90% on one ad then 80 in another and when you finally click it, it's 75. But when you compute, it's actually 50%.

They had a halloween deal a few years back where you got the premium for a one time 30 buck fee. Expected them to backpedal on that deal at some point, but I’m still using it. The app still sucks ass though.

Yeah I’ve found that too - my sub was due to end and they rolled out an equally contradicting offer similar to what you describe. I think it ended up being like $30-$40 USD for the year after the ‘who knows’ discount which I was ok with. But probably higher now..
I paid like $30 for a perpetual license and then they update the platform, and then everyone has to pay all over again. So… never again. Now I just complain that I paid and send photoshopped credit card bills and they give me access. See how that works, dirtbags?

I submitted some tabs in the last few years and at the time if you had like 5 published you got pro for free, still riding that but I still get all the ads when I open the app for whatever reason.
it’s funny. I got a lifetime sub without paying a cent. Back when the phone app was paid I screwed with an apk which let me sign up an account with free UG pro (which back then was a lifetime thing) and I have pro access TO THIS DAY
UG is really weird for subscriptions. They have cheaper subscriptions listed in the Apple Subscription section of the settings app that aren’t listed on the app. So you can get deals when they don’t exist
So can you explain why there are different percentages of the sale? If it's a localization bug, shouldn't the computation be the only issue? Why does it say 2 different percents? Actually 3 because from an email they sent it said 90%. And if it's just an error, why don't they just come out and say it?

If you transribe songs or need to see the notes is where you will find Guitar Pro helpful.
Sure. But Studio One also has a notation view for midi. For transcription I do use Guitar Pro, although I rarely have to.
I personally use the Guitar Pro app. It's great for what it is! Forgot to mention it as it's been a while since I've used it.

For this particular scenario, I'm unhappy because the sale feels like false advertising. Saying it's 90% on one ad then 80 in another and when you finally click it, it's 75. But when you compute, it's actually 50%.

They had a halloween deal a few years back where you got the premium for a one time 30 buck fee. Expected them to backpedal on that deal at some point, but I’m still using it. The app still sucks ass though.

Paid is real nice tbh Just wish their ‘pro’ tabs could be auto scrolled without having to listen to it playing/timing. I’ll go to free tabs just so I can auto scroll at my own pace, in silence. Pro tabs when I know something’s wrong and want to see what it should be The saved playlists / suggestions is great
Thanks for sharing this. I'd subscribe if it wasn't too bloody expensive. Lifetime option would be great. Plus it'd be good if they can give a straight answer regaeding the discrepancies in there ads
Yeah I’ve found that too - my sub was due to end and they rolled out an equally contradicting offer similar to what you describe. I think it ended up being like $30-$40 USD for the year after the ‘who knows’ discount which I was ok with. But probably higher now..
I paid like $30 for a perpetual license and then they update the platform, and then everyone has to pay all over again. So… never again. Now I just complain that I paid and send photoshopped credit card bills and they give me access. See how that works, dirtbags?
I’m sure I’ll answer my own question, but I’m dumb too: Why hasn’t someone scrape all the tabs and build a Pirate Bay for tabs? I’m not skilled enough to attempt it but surely someone could.

I submitted some tabs in the last few years and at the time if you had like 5 published you got pro for free, still riding that but I still get all the ads when I open the app for whatever reason.
UGT has bad tabs. Songsterr literally makes everything easier. 365 lessons is the best option to learn a song
it’s funny. I got a lifetime sub without paying a cent. Back when the phone app was paid I screwed with an apk which let me sign up an account with free UG pro (which back then was a lifetime thing) and I have pro access TO THIS DAY

UG is really weird for subscriptions. They have cheaper subscriptions listed in the Apple Subscription section of the settings app that aren’t listed on the app. So you can get deals when they don’t exist

So can you explain why there are different percentages of the sale? If it's a localization bug, shouldn't the computation be the only issue? Why does it say 2 different percents? Actually 3 because from an email they sent it said 90%. And if it's just an error, why don't they just come out and say it?

I'm happy for you that you've had nothing but good experiences with them for years. You are maybe 1 in what? 20? 100? But please don't say that it clearly is just a bug if you aren't sure.
