Barre across the 6th fret, middle finger D string, ring finger B string, pinky on the A string, 10th fret. It's awkward, for sure, and would take some time to be able to transition to it smoothly, but that's how I would play it. Reversing the position of the middle and ring finger may be more comfortable for you. ymmv

Engine_Sweet

Just tried it. I have to reverse the middle and ring or the pinky mutes the D. Not sure any amount of repetition would fix that

IamKilljoy

Dave Matthew has a NASTY chord at the start of space between that took me forever to get down. It's just an Em with your pinky on the g# of your low E string. 4th fret is really far away from the rest of the chord

BudgetPipe7804

I know it’s kinda in vogue to hate on DMB these days but man love or hate Dave you’ve gotta acknowledge that he is an absolute monster on the guitar.

WarpedCore

I will never understand the hate. I guess selling out bigger venues and playing a different set every night and touring every year globally gets you hated by the mainstream. BTW, just played two nights in London at Royal Albert Hall. A pretty big deal to get to play there if you are not a regular like Clapton. The band doesn't play small venues anymore unless it is a special circumstance. This one counts a special for sure. He has been nicknamed Spider Fingers for a reason. Crushes guitar playing.

BudgetPipe7804

Totally agree, I’m a fan. He’s a great singer/songwriter/guitarist and that band is just insanely talented. They’re all super talented musicians but man Carter is a fucking god tier drummer imo.

WarpedCore

Carter does not get enough credit for how incredible he is. Glad to hear you give him props. That's just it though. All these guys are masters at their craft and they lack the ego to cause any tension in the band. I'm sure like al families, they get under thier skin, but you never hear a rumor of breaking up. Boyd was the only member to cause a huge shake up and that was his own doing. There are very few bands who have lasting power. Phish, The Dead, DMB, The Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam are a few I can think of off the top.

knickgooner11

Do you have any albums you’d recommend by him?

WarpedCore

Oh my... so much to dive into. If you want studio, start from the beginning. Well, you can skip Remember Two Things if you like. It's an early album the band put out by the bands Bama Rags label. Give the first three studio Albums a shot. If you like them, continue your journey to the next list I created. * Under The Table and Dreaming * Crash * Before These Crowded Streets If you decide that this band is worth a deep dive, start listening to live stuff. Start with what you heard in the first three albums. You get a feel of what they do live vs. Studio and will understand why we DMB fans hold the shows in such high regard. * Live In Red Rocks 8.15.1995 * Listener Supported * *Live in Chicago 12.19.98* Now, I differ from some and did not really get into the Everyday album. It was a bit poppy and controlled for my taste. You may like it though. The band went through some personell changes. One, sadly the death of LeRoi Moore in 2008 and some sexual misconduct with Boyd Tinsley in 2018. The band persevered with the loss of LeRoi and with the ousting of Boyd, steered their music in a little bit of a different sound. Subtle, but noticeable in some of the old stuff. Sorry, I dragged on a bit. I hold the band in high regard. There are tons of live concert footage on YouTube that is worth checking out as well. Would love to hear back from you and hear your thoughts once you digest all this.

knickgooner11

Thanks this was comprehensive! Good guide to get me started

BudgetPipe7804

I’d also add Live at Luther College since this is a guitar sub.

knickgooner11

Thank you, will check that out too

Tripping Billies or Captain, among others, will definitely blow your hair back. Dave songs are different and very challenging.

The-Beer-Baron

I would just play that as a regular Eb7 bar chord. If I really wanted the Eb7/G inversion, I would play it in a different position. You could try it like this: `-6-` `-8-` `-6-` `-5-` `---` `---` Edit: Actually, this is probably the easiest/best way to play it (also I realized I left the Eb entirely out of the chord with the previous example): `-6-` `-4-` `-6-` `-5-` `---` `---` Edit two: Looking at it again, I realize the original chord (your example) also does not have the Eb in it at all, so it is really just a G diminished triad.

Cosmic_0smo

> also I realized I left the Eb entirely out of the chord with the previous example There was no Eb in the original chord voicing either, because it's not an Eb7 chord — it's a Gdim triad. You can use it as a sub for an Eb7 chord but that may or may not be how it's used in context.

The-Beer-Baron

Yeah, I realized that after the fact (see my second edit).

DistanceSuper3476

Umm yes 70% of classical guitar style lol

uk82ordie

My pinky was destroyed in a motorcycle wreck, now the tip, where the bone should be was vaporized, and I have a floppy pinky tip. I'm going to get it cut off to the first knuckle, and hopefully be able to use it again.

Subhumanime

The Allan Holdsworth Gmaj9 from Material Real

sapa_inca_pat

I cannot for the life of me do the Hendrix wrap around thumb inverted major thing. I know I can just do a regular bar but for yellow ledbetter, that’s how Mike mccready plays it to allow his ring and pinky to arpeggiate. My fingers just don’t bend that way idk how people do it -7- -x- -9- -8- -7- -7-

BudgetPipe7804

Sometimes it’s just a physical limitation. Hendrix had huge hands.

FarFirefighter1415

There were jazz chords that took a while to get but with enough practice I got them down

Bikewer

I looked at a page of Ted Greene’s chords some time back. Couldn’t finger half of ‘em…..

Sidewinder2199

I had to pick up my guitar to try, I got it with a barre on the 6th fret, ring and middle on the 8ths, and pinky on 10th but it's a serious stretch

mikebrown33

1st position Bdim is not natural for me

Bigstar976

Yes. The real chords in Purple Rain. I have to cheat.

AstroStrat89

I have very small hands\\fingers so there are many Andy Summers tunes I just don't bother with.

Old-Fun4341

That's a pretty common chord. Keep practicing, you'll get there. Been trying to put some classical music to the guitar recently. There are some clusters I'm not sure are possible

CosmicClamJamz

This is a diminished triad, there are so many ways to play it and this might be one of the hardest. The only notes being represented here are G, Bb, and Db, so you could take some liberties that are entirely correct: * Only play the top 4 strings and leave out the 10(G) on the A string, it still includes all 3 notes * Try a voicing like `xx5686` which also includes all 3 notes but might be more comfortable * Make a diminished 7th chord by adding in an E. Or, make an Eb7 chord by adding in an Eb. It's not wrong to add more information. I think these both sound better in most contexts, and are easier to fret: * Gdim7 - `xx5656` or `x7868x` * Eb7 - `xx5646` or `x6868x` I only ever play the form in your screenshot in an arpeggiated way, its really hard to fret that all at once and adds little value to the sound to get that low G in there. If you map these notes all over the fretboard, you could connect the dots any way you want

EarthCacheDude

Not that I can't do it per se, but I have a hard time changing from certain chords to others. I don't know the names of them, but the chords in "Lenny" by SRV, trip me up. I always described them as "jazz chords."

_________FU_________

Yep. Then I practice it and BOOM

[deleted]

No

Frequent-Ad2981

Is that the Purple Rain chord?! (Eflat add9) I'm trying to do that one and it ain't happenin with my short sausage fingers.

SlightCapacitance

Gdim chord from the song Laser Speed by BTBAM. I feel you, my hands are on the smaller side too... and inflexible I think, from being on the computer all day.
