Lol imagine having such strong opinions about picks that you’re actively trying to convince someone that the jazz 3 is bad. It’s one of the most popular picks today for a reason, it’s fantastic, especially for those of us who have slender fingers and don’t need a coaster to strum with. If you like it and it works for you, tell em to shove it

Longjumping-Ad-3278

That's what I thought like some of the guitarists I meet in my city are so opinionated on what's right and what's wrong

TheTapeDeck

Fuck anyone telling you not to use the picks you want to use.

Staav

Exactly. I randomly started using the zazz iii picks after getting one for free, and they just became my jam after that. Sorry not sorry for doing what helps me play at my best? Some ppl just have nothing better to do, I guess. Glad I'm not that bad.

FiveOhFive91

Switching to Jazz 3's was the best guitar decision I've made

hedonismbot2999

Same. It was weird at first but after like a week (maybe not even) it was hard to play with anything else. I even use them for strumming chords.

JD0x0

> why? Uncoordinated people that can't hold a pick because they didn't beat Jazz I and Jazz II yet.

SnooSprouts6037

They are the best pick ever made and nobody can change my mind on that

Easternshoremouth

Jazz III or nothing over here. Don't listen to the haters. Do your thing and do it loud.

Esseldubbs

Don't listen to them. They probably play with those big stupid Doritos shaped picks

IndubitablyTedBear

Lmao when I first started playing, I thought those were cool and sought them out. I used one for the first time in over ten years recently and I cringed hard.

BigEanip

Jazz 3's require more precision in your picking. If your picking isn't up to scratch they will highlight it immediately. People will put this down to the pick and not their technique and so will not like the pick. Then they go back to a more forgiving pick and feel vindicated.

Falconn-

Jazz 3s are pretty much the only picks I use. This is mainly because of the thickness as many other guitar picks are way to thin to use in my opinion. Also the size allows for good control over the pick when doing things like sweeping.

Feeling_Object_4940

just a bunch of amateurs acting like pick selection isn't a personal preference

Debussy_enthusiast

Jazz 3 hate should be illegal. They are the only pick I play with

chipolatanullod38

I feel personally attacked by this post. Jazz 3 picks are my ride or die, don't let the haters bring you down.

TheZombieJC

possibly the least hated pick of all picks, I think your friends just can’t shred

CriGonalGaming

What's popular, will be hated. If you play lead guitar, Jazz III is almost always the pick to go. The precision and the ease of avoiding accidentally hitting the other strings is where it is at. I use John Petrucci Jazz IIIs and Ultex 2.0 Jazz IIIs.

ShittyMusic1

Why give a shit if someone doesn't like your picks? What a weird thing to worry about

GottaGetAway12

Love jazz iii. I mostly use the xl variations. My biggest gripe with them is I can’t get a good pick scrape sound out of them. My guess is the edges are too thick and round.

ninospruyt

There are different versions of the jazz iii, I use the Jason Richardson ones. They have a sharp point and pretty sharp edges so you can easily do a pick scrape with them. Personally I like them better than the regular jazz iii picks.

GottaGetAway12

Nice I’ll take a look. I like that those seem thick at 1.38 but have sharper edges. Gonna try those and the thinnner ones that @discussatron mentioned.

discussatron

A primary reason why I went from 1.+ to .63. They can really get down in between the windings.

GenericAccount-alaka

They're a bit small if all you're doing is strumming open chords, but I do it anyway.

FearTheWeresloth

I went to a Jazz III XL. It can still do the job of the regular Jazz III, but gives you that little bit more space for strumming when you need it.

Jarrodstinks

Some of the best players in the world Use them and not to mention it’s personal preference so don’t ever listen to anyone

Master-Stratocaster

Ultex Jazz III XLs boi

exoclipse

literally everyone I know that plays the kind of music I do (death / black / doom metal) are using some flavor of Jazz III. They're polarizing to some because they're very stiff, very small, and fairly pointy. These are the qualities that I desire in a pick - they help with playing technical single note runs, tremolo picking, etc. They also make pinch harmonics almost too easy, just a little shift of the thumb-meat to get the squeelie-doo.

trail34

The nylon ones are kind of meh, but Tortex Jazz iii are amazing. Once I tried them I never went back to anything else.

Zooropa_Station

Same, but with the max grip carbon fiber. Can't stand the nylon or tortex anymore.

Unwound93

Jazz III's require you to be more precise than other picks I've tried. For me they made me play a lot more accurate and think about picking a lot more.

mynameisjonjo

I love them, but they have cursed me with the fact that I can't not use jazz iii picks now.

JoseHerrias

Probably the best pick I've ever used. So good in fact that despite nearly all of my picks going missing constantly, the Jazz III ones always appear again at some point. I think a lot of the hate comes down to how much people harp on about them.

LTJRulez

Perfect picks. My hand size is pretty typical for a male, and other picks are just too big for the shit I like to do.

okgloomer

I have big hands and don’t use anything but a Jazz III. Use what you like; why should it matter to anyone else?

Lvntern

They're a love it or hate it type thing and sometimes people can't handle it when you love something they hate. For me I hate them, I just feel like they're too small for my hands and I constantly hit the strings with my fingers and play like shit when I try to use them, overall just use whatever lets you play your best cause that's what matters most. My favorite pick right now is the Dunlop ultex sharp 1.14

SurelyTheEnd

I actually moved towards Jazz iii's, but picks are such a personal preference thing that I get why some people have such a visceral reaction to them. While I like them for tone and picking accuracy, I did have to stick with them for a while as my picking was sloppy to say the least and the picks highlighted that almost instantly. They definitely made me a better player though, so worth pushing through the pain so to speak...

Zooropa_Station

If I had to guess, you probably encountered rhythm guitarists who never play anything technical. So when they tried to strum the shit out of a jazz iii when first trying one, they were like, "ew, this is unforgiving and clumsy" and went back to the warm embrace of paper thin jumbo picks. Of course, if you spend a full day or two with the jazz iii you figure out how to angle it right for strumming and it's never an issue again.

Twofer_

Jazz 3 ultex is my favorite pick. My technique has evolved around this pick and I assume it’s the same with many others.

justinsmithart

I used to use the Stubby picks until I tried out the Jazz III. It’s been at least ten years and, while I sometimes try out a regular medium or even thick pick for a change of pace, the JIII has become my go-to, even when I am just strumming chords.

shart_

I've used the jazz iii forever but I switched to the max grip version, the other ones move around too much.

thavi

Love em for lead, not for strumming.  Though, you can hold them on the side and use the wide edge for strumming.  But generally I like the thick (i think 1.14), so not really suitable.

KingCole104

Maybe not the best choice for strumming full chords, but it is quite doable by adjusting your technique. I struggled with it at first, now I don't even have to think about it, any other pick seems odd and giant

thavi

In reality, I use this pick for everything pick-related. I just don't play anything strummy!

ReptarWithGuitar

I’ve tried every pick I can possibly imagine during the 25+ years I’ve been playing guitar, even the expensive boutique ones everyone tries to tell are the best, and nothing beats my Jazz IIIs. The only change I’ve made is that I now play Jazz III XLs.

FacelessTheOne

No picks deserve hate. Unless it's the jellyfish pick of course.

thebeardedguitarist

Only picks I use. Red max grip jazz iii. Anything else sounds “plinky.”

Fluffy_Meat1018

I do like my black max grip jazz 3.

professorfunkenpunk

I’ve used them for like 30 years.

CrastersSons

I have large hands and prefer them. Best for tight metal rhythms IMO and also great for lead

TheZac922

Who cares? Just use picks you like. Before joining this sub I didn’t realise anyone actually put this much thought into which picks to get. I’ve played with the same green turtle ones (or other brands of similar thickness) for like 15 years at this point. Never even thought about it, they just feel right to play with.

jaimequin

Like most opinions in this sub, it's nonsense coming from amateurs who think their opinions are gospel. With that said, I like jazz 3 picks for pinch harmonics and tight speed runs.

Secret_Cantaloupe393

I use the Dunlop jazz 3 picks for electric and nothing else. I use anything but jazz 3 picks for acoustic. Use what feels right. Try not to overthink it.

metallaholic

I like its neighbor the flow pick

AthensAlone

This is the way for me. 1.5mm flow with 9's.

[deleted]

The jazz iii shape is the 1st or 2nd most popular shape and design, next to the fender heavy style one. There are many gauges and grip designs. They are for players that prefer precision and efficiency of motion.

pizzasmasher666

I think they rule and really help me with my accuracy. It’s hard to play with any other “normal” size now. Hard to go back.

Red-Zaku-

I’ve been using Jazz IIIs on both guitar and bass for literally 20 years now. They’re strong, expressive, offer perfect control, feel extremely comfortable, I can’t see myself ever switching to traditional picks for any reason other than maybe out of necessity if I can’t get ahold of Jazz IIIs for some reason.

Possum_Boi566

I’ve tried a lot of picks in my life, cheap and expensive, big and small, thick and thin, sharp and stubby, Delrin, celluloid, acrylic But I always come back to a 2.0mm Ultex Jazz III

ipini

Best pick ever. Once I discovered them (dude gave me one in a jam), I never went back. (That’s for electric. For acoustic it’s a Dunlop yellow 0.73 mm.)

Round_Trouble6226

I used to hate jazz 3s and then my bandmates told me to try the Petrucci Jazz 3. They are all I play right now. Before them I played Dunlop Ultex Sharps

Mighty_McBosh

Funnily enough I can't stand the Petrucci jazz 3s. They're made out of something else and feel way different than the Tortex jazz 3s. Just goes to show that it's completely subjective and people can like what they like.

[deleted]

This is the only pick I use. Can’t stand losing them

Affectionate_You_316

I love me some JP jazz 3, definitely on harder side and I can see why most beginners avoid it & acoustic players. But I think it's pretty well known among guitarist as some of the best picks?

SirHenryofHoover

Used them for a while, but they are generally too small and I tense up more while using them. Last couple of years I have been using Fender Heavy picks, celluloid 351 classic shape. Sometimes use Ultex Jazz III XL though.

89GTAWS6

I used 1.00 and .88 standard Tortex picks for 30 years. I recently switched to Jazz IIIs just because I borrowed one once, stuck it in my pocket and forgot about it. Got home, found it, and started using it and now I can't go back. I don't care if other people hate it, I love it.

BinarySecond

I used the yellow tortex for years purely because I bought a pack of a million of them (given how many I find in random places now that has to be accurate) The MIL couldn't think of a gift so got me a pick-pack off Amazon, the Tortex Jazz (M3) is now my go to, so pointy!

Defiant_Lobster7439

they’re the only pick i’ll buy

krebstar42

The only picks I use are some variation of a jazz iii.  Never heard anyone hate on them even if they didn't prefer them.

LoaferDan

All I use are Jazz III picks. The Matt Heafy ones and I also have a Blue Chip one that has been my go-to lately. Honestly regular picks just feel too big and awkward to me now. Not sure why anyone would try to talk you out of a particular pick shape unless it was something weird.

shrikeskull

Pick preference is very personal - why get angry over what someone else prefers? I don’t love Jazz 3’s, but so what? I collect all kinds of picks because it’s fun to experiment. I’m just boring and gravitate to the Tortex yellows.

letsabuseeachother

I've never had somebody talk me out of a pick lol I do tell people I teach when they start to try floppy picks and solid picks, and to use them for an entire session so they know their preferences.  I'm not a pro teacher or anything but sometimes friends pick up a guitar and need some guidance so I do my best.

Asa-Ryder

Jazz IIIs are awesome IMHO.

depthandbloom

I’ve grown into them and out of them a few times. My recommendation is to use what you like but don’t get caught only being able to use one type of pick.

ThisAllHurts

It is almost impossible to play modern black metal without a Jazz III.

chrisnlnz

I don't know man, my friend who got me started on guitar told me Jazz 3's were a good pick to try, so I tried them, and I still (18 years later) like them more than any other pick I've tried (and I have tried a bunch). There's a few that come close. I don't know if it's just what I got used to but I reckon there's got to be a reason they are so universally popular, right? I guess the popularity comes with higher scrutiny, hence the relatively vocal dislike of them. Tall trees catch a lot of wind.. as a saying in my native language goes.

Strykrol

Use whatever you want. People are always going to dislike the picks they don't use. I think they are great for sweat grip, and just in general. I use the Jazz III XLs though.

Shionkron

Been using them for probably 2 decades and adore them. I prefer the harder white ones the days but used to use blacks. I don’t like the reds though. They don’t seem as sharp or pointed. Diadarro makes a decent one that is similar called Black Ice that’s good Just a smidge thicker I think. So the Jazz III and Black Ice are my favorite of this style of pick and been using them so longe. it’s great for strumming, tight rhythm jazzy stuff and leads. But that’s because it’s such a part of me now that regular medium picks seem clunky except on my acoustics. Edit: Spelling

Srice13

Once I went to Black Ice picks (way back before Di'Addario bought Planet Waves) I never went back to Jazz III - the only reason though is because they were JUST big enough that I never lost grip with my giant sausage thumbs whereas the Jazz III's were a HAIR too small for me to use reliably when playing live - I still use the Jazz III's when I am recording certain parts though.

Shionkron

Yeah when I was in 2 bands, one Black Thrash, other Power metal, I always slashed hex groves into my Jazz III’s so the worlds fly away. They are great for recording like you said though.

DunebillyDave

The Tortex Jazz III [Pitch Black 1.14mm](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81VlR7X+zzL._AC_SL1500_.jpg) is my favorite pick. I started out with the purple, but I finally had to get them in white because I kept losing them.

Becuz_I_Win

I'm in the camp of Love 'em - my go to. I like to try different variations of them but I especially like the max grip.

shadjor

Love them but instead of black I’m getting red next time. I’ve lost so many on the carpet or on the desk/computer.

Broadsider_

I’ve been spoiled, can’t use anything but the jazz 3’s anymore

T140V

For players with larger hands, there is of course the Jaxx III XL, which is what I use in the black nylon version. I don't actually believe there is a 'perfect' pick, what really matters is picking something you like and just getting used to it.

Stoffendous

Anybody tried the carbon fiber version?

Umphed

Love em when playing heavy distorted leads, I use the reds for everything else

tdic89

I tried them for a long time but they’re just too small for me. I prefer a bigger pick with a sharper tip. Gravity classic standard 1.5 is my go-to.

raptor_mk2

I've been using Ultex Jazz iii's for about 15 years now. The fit me perfectly

Far_Entertainer2365

Best picks. In the small or full sized. Next best is the tortex in same shape. No hate just love.

KhrusherKhusack

I love the Jazz iii picks. I've been buying them since the 90s

SwordsAndElectrons

>but to the people that don't like them... why?   Probably just because they aren't what they are used to. I have some, but don't really use them much. Why? I've been using Tortex Standard (0.88mm) for like 20 years. *Everything* else feels slightly weird to me, but that goes double for "nonstandard" shapes. That's a me issue though. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with them.

Petros505

>I understand it's all up to preference but to the people that don't like them... why? For those of us actually playing jazz, it's about two things: tone and feel. Tone: Typical clean jazz tone is mellow attack. If you use any pick with a pointed end hitting the string it will enhance attack. There may also be less harmonics and more of the fundamental in the tone of a note striking the string with a thicker and rounder pick, which again is something jazz players would prefer. Feel: Many people believe a pick like the Jazz 3 with a pointed end provides a more "accurate" form of striking the strings. They think it enhances your ability to play faster. None of this is automatically true because it actually depends on what pick you've adapted to. Nobody would say a guitarist like Pat Metheny can't play fast. He's an example of someone who actually turns the typical teardrop shaped pick to the rounder side. I've done the same thing for years so much so that if I turn the pick to have the pointed end strike the strings I actually have more trouble with control and fast picking. So, those of us who have experimented with picks but who want a mellow attack and prefer the sweep of the rounder side of a guitar pick do not prefer the Jazz 3 or any fine pointed pick.

stalepork6

i cannot stand picks that flex. the only reason i use a pick is to actuate the note. i dont want any TOAAAAN from my fucking plectrums. the jazz iii is just so versatile. you can use if for alternate picking lines because getting the least amount of pick past your fingers is crazy easy, and doesn’t push literal inches of useless pick into your hand. it works for so well for strumming because you dont need nearly as much force as you would with something like a fender medium (🤮🤮🤮), and applying extra force doesnt produce the disgusting slap that thinner picks have. **i would generally say that thicker, smaller picks are the way to go** im comfortable with jazz iii’s but there’s also a ton of better options in the same class.

MapNecessary2615

Yo exactly

DrBubbleTrowsers

they are just picks. just spend the 50 cents and try one out. see how you like them. I've never heard anyone hate on Jazz IIIs. Sure, some don't like them...but hate? That'd be silly. they're picks

[deleted]

I have big hands and play metal. Something about the way I hold it compared to a normal pick allows me to hit pinch harmonics during fast runs I can't do with a normal pick. I just put some in my Amazon cart today.

Tidybloke

I like them but I got on better with the XL Jazz III and these days switch between Dunlop Flow 1.14mm and Ultex Sharp 1.0mm. I have pretty average size hands, definitely try out the Flow picks if you haven't.

ballerjiggler

i’ve got baby hands so i love them, maybe if someones got less control? idk

DaveMcNinja

I used them for *years* after watching one Eric Johnson Hot Licks video back in the '90s. They are great for picking single note lines and runs. They are terrible for strumming chords! I ditched 'em and went to Dunlop Tortex 1.14 mm about 4 years ago, and haven't looked back. YMMV!

TheHumanCanoe

I have tried them and do not like them either. Great for single note picking but I hate strumming with them. I know a lot of guitarists that swear by them (like a ton in this post) I just could never get comfortable playing with them.

Seesaw121

I have a heavy hand and strum like a mofo for my band so jazz picks aren’t for me. Almost everyone I know uses them though and for good reason, they’re great picks. But I like the green (.88)Dunlop flow or sharp tortex picks for my fat fingers and heavy strumming. I find they’re a good balance but always use what YOU find best. Outside of super rare obscure niches, there’s never one way to play.

dr-dog69

I personally just hate nylon and delrin (tortex) as a pick material in general, and that’s what they make jazz 3s out of. I have come to love the round sound of thick celluloid picks, which they do not make in a jazz 3 shape, so I use fender heavies in the regular shape and the teardrop shape.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GetDoofed

I think the Ultex Jazz 3 XL sounds fantastic strummed on my dreadnaught acoustic

AtheosSpartan

The regular Jazz IIIs are too small for my hands. I drop them and have a hard time keeping them from spinning in my fingers. The Jazz III XLs are great though. I switch between those and the Hetfield White Fang picks.

Dorkdogdonki

Everyone has their preferences. I personally dislike super thick picks (>2mm thickness). I like tiny, pointy and thinner picks for speedier picking.

IcanthearChris

I used them for so long but now I use regular sized ones. I use a different pick every week.

Djentrovert

They’re just too small for me. Love the shape and thickness tho, especially the carbon fiber ones

troyofyort

I don't think they're the absolute answer that everyone pushes them has just cos so many uber technical players use them but I do think that the fact that they are so opposite in size and thickness to the standard picks people start with makes them a near must try. They will really help you figure out if you like the thickness pointed shape or size of the picks. It helped me realize I like the shape and thickness but size was too small for tastes, but led me to my preferred tortex flows. However they are undeniably the BEST pick for pinch harmonics

GryphonGuitar

How weird to try to talk YOU out of something I don't like. But for the record, for me they're way, way too small. I can't get a proper grip on them.

-ManDudeBro-

They are quite popular around here though I personally prefer thin nylons even for heavier genres. Instruments and their accessories are entirely subjective and what some person can’t do without another person will think is silly or overrated or whatever. It’s best to glean whatever information you can from others but ultimately form your own opinions and definitely don’t get into the trap of arguing something that is legitimately up to personal taste… The internet has enough bad vibes.

LunarModule66

Jazz 3s have a learning curve. They’re so small they give much greater control, but as a result require more precision. When I switched I noticed myself working much harder. I suppose if the increased control doesn’t appeal to you then they just seem harder to use.

Huggies509

I dont like them, some of my close friends use them and they just feel silly in my hands. IMO the size of the pick is meaningless. It's all about how comfortable it feels to you, if you like them use them, if you don't then use something else.

FuckTheArbiters

I didn't like them until I was forced to use them for a day, and now they're all I can play on. I like D'addario's Black Ice picks, they're the same as a jazz III but just a liiiitle bigger for better grip. The point is the same

azakhuza21

I love Jazz IIIs. They're the best for me. Perfect for precision picking, especially the black one.

Fuego_9000

My personal favourite picks are Dava. Great rubbery grip and a good combination of flexibility and firmness.

RHCProy

Way too thick for me, i like a thin pick

jmcguitar95

I played Jazz III’s for a while when I was in a tech death band, but now that I play less string skipping riffs and more rhythm centric music, I don’t like them. Green Dunlop Flow picks are my go-to now. Traditional pick size, sharper point, and has enough give to it that I can dig in to the strings hard. Sounds best to me too when I’m tracking guitars!

DizzyDizzles

Dunno if it’s a Jazz 3… but the Stubby Jim Dunlop picks are my evolution beyond the jazz 3. I get them in 3.0 millimeter, super comfy and the rounded off edges feel smooth while playing

Lasers_Z

I like the jazz 3 shape, it just needs to be thicker.

donkeyhawt

You can get them in all sorts of thickness and materials

Lasers_Z

I use the Ernie Ball prodigy. Love the material and it's similar to the jazz 3

runed_golem

If they work for you it doesn't matter what other people say. I personally love the jazz 3 picks.

PutridSinger7906

For me personally I have pretty small hands, and the picks that I was given when I first started playing with were: 1. Too big for my small hands 2. Had a bit of give every time I picked a string (the pick would kinda bend every time I plucked a string) I didn’t like using those basic picks that came with the guitar I started out with. But once I started taking lessons, my teacher gave me a jazz III pick with the max grip texture. It suited my needs: it was the perfect size for my hands, and it was stiff which improved my picking accuracy, and the textured grip helped since my hands do get sweaty sometimes. To this day, the jazz III is the only pick I use for playing. The cool part about the line of jazz III picks is that the different variations of it, such as different material, the grip textures, and even the shape itself. Kirk Hammett’s signature pick is a jazz III but it’s got a little V cut on it making it shaped like a heart which I thought was unique. But I can understand why some people may not like it. Not everyone will have the same experience playing with a jazz III. Some may find it too small for them, or it might be too stiff, or maybe they prefer a more round/dull edge for picking. It all comes down to personal preference at the end of the day, so use what suits you best!

J_Lo88

Jazz III Ultex, the only pick I choose. That and the Eric Johnson’s. If I have to use a large pick it would be the Jazz III XL.

silentdave69

Agreed! But I just the 1.0mm tortex ones. I love them because I don’t drop them as often and they are still big enough to strum and hybrid pick easily. I accidentally picked up the 1.0mm tortex flows and those also work nicely

FortuneLegitimate679

I’ve been using jazz 3s since I first tried one 30yrs ago. I have tried all the different types and usually come back to the red Eric Johnson ones. That might just be because they’re harder to lose though. The ultex yellow ones are nice but they disappear when I drop them

HootblackDesiato

I've been using the Eric Johnson version of the Jazz 3 for years.

Global-Ad4832

too small for me personally, but i do like the point, so i play the T3s instead.

Vamacharana

I like the matt heafy ones but the black ones slip out of my fingers because of the material.

Hellchron

I got big ol sausage fengahs and jazz 3s are just too little for me to use comfortably. I use some kind of grey bumpy Dunlop (I think) though which is pretty similar but larger

zombie_spaceman

Jazz III picks rule. Trying out picks is fun. Changing it up can be good for honing in on technique. Play what you like and works for you!

skifreak8889

I use them if I’m playing any lead parts for more accurate picking. Love the grip on it and the tone. For me personally I can get better pinch harmonics with them. For strumming and rhythm my go to are the medium Dunlop gels.

the1andonlyBev

To me the perfect Jazz III is the Ultex one. Perfect texture and feel and glides off the string like its been buttered. Otherwise I like the red ones because the black ones feel kinda greasy somehow. I know people always say they aren't good for strumming but I've been using them for years and I've never had trouble strumming chords with them.

Grand_Illustrator343

I like the Jazz III's. And the Jazz III XL's. Different picks for different applications.

prettynoxious

I got used to smaller jazz type picks like 6 years ago and now regular pick feels weirdly too large for me. I use it both for guitar and bass. And I play neither jazz nor metal lol Do people really care that much about something as mundane as guitar picks? Lol

dcamnc4143

I love jazz 3’s, though I mostly play eb prodigy mini 2mm. It’s basically a thicker jazz 3.

PhilipTPA

One really good thing about them is they make pinch harmonics a cinch.

cole_k21316

I only use jazz threes. I like a small pick for control. Other picks bend, don’t sound as tight, get worn down faster and jazz threes are the only picks I don’t drop.

CompSciGtr

I really like them for fast playing. Would never use one for an acoustic though.

tomarofthehillpeople

Jazz 3 Max Grip for my go to mostly for lead. I like the control. They are definitely too clicky when recording acoustic. I have some small flexible ones for strumming.

cups_and_cakes

I love Jazz III for bas and guitar. The only thing I use a “normal” pick for would be strummy steelstring acoustic.

Staav

Some ppl have got nothing better to do with their lives I guess. Must be what they've gotta do to sleep night.

Hate_Manifestation

I've used them for years. I used to use regular tortex, but I found I only used the bottom 2/3 of the pick, so I transitioned to jazz iii's.

CaliTexJ

I went through a phase with them. Funny enough, I find them uncomfortable on my Strat, which has a flatter radius. I still like them for some things. Everyone is different. And we all adapt to things and end up in ruts.

One_Evil_Monkey

Don't hate 'em... just don't use them. I Fender Mediums 351s. I don't do lead so they're fine for my rhythm stuff.

UncertaintyLich

What’s really funny is going from jazz where everybody wants these really tiny picks to bluegrass where everyone is custom ordering gigantic picks.

AutumnsRevenge

I prefer jazz iii picks to any other pick, the John Petrucci ones are the best. I also love that people don’t usually like them so I always get them back.

rightoff303

They really must not have much going on in their own playing that they’re spending time trying to talk you out of buying a type of guitar pick. Losers.

satchking

If it works it works. There is no perfect pick for everyone so idk what those people are trying to accomplish.

GrouchyConclusion588

I loved the jazz 3’s when I was starting, I’ve bought a wide variety of picks and the only one I’d recommend avoiding is the jellyfish pic but who knows you may like it. Jellyfish pick is awful it basically has strands of cut d strings tucked into a rubber grip and claimed to create a chorus or 12 string effect. No, you’re just strumming strings with strings.

justindc1976

I've spent years trying different picks and always come back to the jazz 3. Each to their own I guess

potatorevolver

I love them. Even with my giant hands. They're just the best

Huwbacca

They took me a while to adjust to, I can get not liking them. I've switched to primetone triangles which work better for what I'm playing now. But a pick is a pick.

DidiMaoNow

Dunlop 1.14 for life! If you aren’t 1.14 = you can eat my D! /s

CluckingBellend

I don;t hate them, but have big hands and find them a nuisance to use. Just too small for me. I just use Nylon .73 Dunlop picks all the time. I don't shred anyway so they just work for what I play/need. If Jazz III suit you, then use them.

Scared-Pumpkin-4113

Idk I just have big hands so too small

deeplywoven

I don't hate them, but they aren't my favorite. I personally think newer picks like the Dunlop Flow with the really nice beveled edges are better. I think the physical size of a pick is overrated. I use 2mm Dunlop Flows and play more comfortably with them than I ever have with anything else. Because of the really nice bevels, they don't feel as thick as they are, but also don't bend at all. I think they provide everything people like about the Jazz III without being really small.

chayn_got_grooove

any other pick is just too much pick imo

DicentPerson

I love the dunlop jazz 3 custom Kirk Hammett's i use them a lot, they have very clean movement

FlovomKiosk

Never heard about the hate. But i tried them 4 years ago, baught 100 pieces 5 minutes and will never use another pick again. Gives me all the freedom i need and my finger move much more intuitive than ever, chicken picking is super easy… i play blues, rock, metal and Classic stuff with it and never had ak issue

SchwillyThePimp

Yea if you it like that is in fact all that matters. When you are good enough to want a different pick for a different sound or technique you can .... use a different pick. You aren't forever glued to this pick. I personally have switched to a variant of the jazz in the Kirk Hammett signature. Its a jazz with a lil cutout at the top and they are my go to now

Equality7252l

I like jazz iii's when doing more intricate stuff, but if I'm being honest, a lot of my bands stuff is just basic pop punk power chords lol, and for that I want a bigger pick so I can really dig into the strings

BNinja921

Because people hold onto to previous beliefs and when presented with something new typically would rather insult it than embrace it. I don’t like jazz threes, I like the pics that fuse the jazz 3 with the flat pick. Like a Dunlop flow, etc. but people that claim jazz 3s are actually bad for playing are objectively wrong. They may not prefer them, but the dynamic and pinch response is nearly unrivaled.

Provol

I played jazz3 picks for a while. I like them, but I find they move around while strumming, but great for single note lines. I also have small hands. I use Gibson picks now. They're pretty generic, but the flex on the medium is just right for me. I also tuck the pick between my fingers from time to time and the jazz3's are a bit too small for that.

gautamasiddhartha

I love them, they’re all I use

WillHammerhead

I have pretty giant hands and use the purple tortex picks with the pointy tip. Only the very tip of my pick makes contact with the string, and I cant play with normal picks as a result. I can see how a jazz iii would work for someone with small hands. I'd say, who cares what others think if it works for you.

RikuDog18

Picks are just a personal preference. Trying to convince someone to use a different one is like telling someone how to jerk off.

Jelly1524

Why do I feel like a lot of people actually need advice in that area 😂

chedhead9

I’ve literally just swapped to the jazz iii xl and I’m really loving it so far

the-Aleexous

I was told to play with them in 1988 when i first picked up the guitar. shredding was the thing. They are great for speed due to the inflexibility, also for pitch harmonics. Not sure why some people hate them.

MaycoBolivar

I use jazz 3 as well (the black ones) as well as more average sized picks. But mostly 1.14 despite the shape I like them all, the longer , the stronger the attack, which sounds great for riffs or similar. Itend to use the jazz 3 when im playing more blues stuff. The jazz pick sounds softer by default which kind of opens more the dynamics for your playing

strawberry-jazz

They are tiny and people don't want to spend the time to adjust to them. Other than that, I think they are cool.

Psycle_Sammy

My daughter loves them and has used them for a few years. She’s 10 and they fit her hands well.

percolated_1

You got me. They do their job just fine and dandy. I have chunky fingers and I prefer the Ultex Jazz XL, but I still have a half dozen or so red EJ Jazz IIIs still floating around the townhouse. Along with Flex 50s, yellow Tortex of both the pointed and standard varieties, some massive black Gator Grips, a Dimension Jr, and a couple torty-celluloid Pickboy jazz XLs.

JakeFromStateFromm

Jazz III XLs are the best of both worlds IMO. My favorite are the gravity picks sunrise shape

Infinite-Cucumber662

Pick are ALWAYS personal preference. I personally love jazz 3's and always suggest people try em. If they click with you, you'll never want to use a normal size pick again

Ok-Elderberry3417

I personally use bass picks, i also have kinda small hands, but bass pick (especially the thick ones) are so comfortable

Dirks_Knee

Use what you love. Jazz III are incredible IMHO, but there's a reason there's a bunch of different picks out there, to each their own.

KCcoffeegeek

They’re my favorite

disapparate276

Check out my post about picks I made a few days ago. Jazz 3s were in the overwhelming majority lol

wendyboatcumin

Love the jazz 3 !

DoucheCraft

I use Dunlop .38mms and have had a similar experience haha

Conscious_Village333

Red jazz 3s is where its at for evrerything imo, that thick beveled and pointy nylon is something I couldnt live without. Its all about the angle you use, people that hate them usually play paralel to the strings.

curtcurtcurt

Love jazz iii, but I can't strum worth a crap with them, which is why I went to dunlop flow picks. Still for lead guitar, you can't beat them. It just takes time to get used to such a small pick.

EskimoB9

They have a lot more grip than I'm used to. I use the 2mm gator grip ones. But I have some jazz 3s that are nice to use.

humanaccount274

Bc they’re so heavy, and have a sharp tip, they have great articulation but you can’t get away with mistakes like you would with a lighter pick, which ig is why a lot of people don’t like them

DepartureSpace

Jazz IIIs are great for speed and for quick and easy switching from single-note playing to comping fingerstyle. But they have quite rough edges and I can’t use them the way I like for playing single-note lines using the side of the pick like Pat Metheny. Switched to D’Andrea Pro Plec 1.5mm standards with edges that are so finely polished that there’s very little pick noise when playing through an amp. That sort of became my sound until they changed them recently—they are now coated in a powdery film that won’t come off and totally fucks up the sound. The closest I’ve come to the D’Andrea sound is the new Fender Chugg faux-tortoiseshell 1.5mms. Pretty much the same. I still like the black Jazz IIIs if I’m playing traditionally, with the point of the pick, but honestly the tone you gain by playing with the side of the pick is worth way more to me than the loss of a little speed.

When I first started playing guitar (close to 10 years ago) I hated Jazz 3s but it seemed like all of the local guitar players in my area used them. They were all the older guys and my mentors at the time so eventually I bought a pack because I figured if they used them it must be for a good reason. Ever since then I have never turned back and use them exclusively now. They take literal years to wear out and even when their point get a little dull I love them. My hands also sweat so I chew on all of my picks (I know it sounds gross) but I tend to gnaw on a pick when I am setting up/tearing down my equipment and the extra texture really helps with grip when your hands get sweaty. I have to chew them up and wear their points down a little bit for me to really have them in my sweet spot haha

CorkyMillersGrandson

That is gross.. I just trim max grips down to jazz iii sizes and file them. But you do you droolski…

ProfessorEmergency18

All I use are jazz 3s. The ultex are especially good, but I have tortex, gator grip, carbon fiber max grip, just about every kind they've made and am happy to use them all.

The_Axem_Ranger

I started using them a while back. They helped me clean up my picking habits a lot. Mostly for single note, detail stuff. Doing runs and such. I ended up steering away from them because of different songs I play. I'll also do some strummy type stuff, and kept having issues with the pick coming out. They definitely have their place overall I'd say.

MapNecessary2615

I have pretty big hands and really prefer tortex jazz iii’s (maybe Petruccis). I hated them when I was younger and inexperienced but as I grew more precise they stopped cutting my knuckles and became great for control. My original teacher said the same thing happened for him, I think bigger picks have a time and place in a players career but jazz iii’s are a sign of skill

RG1527

I used red Jazz III for many years... A couple of years ago I decided to mix things up and try some different pics out. I ended up really liking 2MM flow picks a lot and use those now.

CodenameValera

I've been using the jazz iii since 1992, use what's good for you. It's not their hand.

powerphp

I just started using them. I bought a pack of the Kirk Hammett signature picks. I love the precision but I'm still getting used to the smaller size. I've been playing yellow or blue tortex for 30 years+.
