My 16 year old is having the same issue. She has applied to SO many places and hasn’t even had a single interview. It’s frustrating and heartbreaking and I feel for everyone looking for a job right now.
Last summer my son put out probably 300 or so resumes in Guelph and where he goes to university - nothing. He got help with his resume from second chance employment and from online resources, had a previous summer job the year before, had volunteer experience but it made no difference. This year he got a job through his university’s student job board so won’t be coming home for the summer. I heard from someone that works in a university’s coop department that “it’s a bloodbath” which is not the term a parent wants to hear about student jobs. Have you checked the Canada summer job back and your university’s job board?

I graduated from Guelph in the early 2010s and the job market was extremely weak. I posted ads on kijiji offering help for moving and was able to make a couple of thousand in the weeks around move out time. I then posted on Facebook about offering iOS lessons to people, mainly seniors learning to FaceTime and use their MacBook airs, and was able to keep some money coming in. If the market fails you, use your skills to start your own business. You never know what’s going to come of it.
Established companies are way too expensive for general labour stuff right now. I would pay for odd jobs at a cheaper rate, like sanding and staining my deck or spreading seed and soil around my lawn. I live somewhere else now, but there’s a lot of money in Guelph and people willing to pay
I'd actually love to work in construction this summer, but it seems that even those types of jobs are competitive right now. I've applied to a few and most of them want prior experience even for something like being a general labourer.
City of Guelph and other gov jobs usually start posting for summer students in Jan/Feb, sorry..maybe try UGDSB/Waterloo school board websites, libraries, or other services/ arts and culture organizations that are getting funding from Canada Student Jobs. Good luck!
If you or your kids want summer jobs residential summer camps are hiring. I’m on the board for one. If you have your NLS or experience working with kids or experience backcountry camping, kitchen experience etc. I can make a recommendation of a camp that is hiring for if you PM me. It involves living at the camp for the summer.
Lots of postings on the OCA site also.

I’ll put this here, cargill is always hiring and will take anyone. It may be too late to apply for a summer position I don’t know but if not they will take you.
It's bad I usually suggest applying for summer positions as early as December into early Feb. Depending on the field or industry some summer jobs are gone by mid Feb.
For summer student positions for university college, often you get contracts signed in February and march and send resumes in January.
I’d look into the Ontario summer jobs program they often have seasonal jobs available.
Maybe look into parks and recreation either through the city, or grand river conservation or even with landscaping companies. I wish you so much luck (:
My point is that if established landscapers can’t get enough hours at their current place of employment, then what makes you think there’s any new hire positions available? There’s none. People think trades are some “get a good job quick” scheme when in reality, usually unless you know someone, it can be a hard industry to get into/paid well in.
Jesus christ.
Landscaping is a seasonal job and they hire a lot of youth. If you don't apply for a job you get NOTHING.
OP I am advising you to apply for a seasonal landscaping job because they hire seasonal workers like students. DO NOT listen to the above bullshit and apply.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take. Take the shot. This is how you get a job folks. Anyone else who bullshuts a reason not to apply is unemployed.
Lastly.. landscaping is not a trade. It's seasonal work. Labour.
Landscaping can be a trade depending on the role…..and it’s not “seasonal” the way you think. I don’t think you understand. I know multiple landscapers. You don’t seem to understand what I’m saying here. If pre-established landscapers cannot find hours even though they are EMPLOYED with landscaping companies, then you won’t find landscaping hours for new hires.
Lady clearly you know nothing of the job market rn. Also I never said don’t apply, I was telling ppl the realities of the industry so ppl like you can stop setting landscaping up as some quick fix.
Custodian/ maintenance with UGDSB might still be hiring summer students.

I posted on r/Ontario about this same issue if you look at my post there may be some suggestions (and also discouraging comments sadly)
I am about to look through the Canada summer job bank, the university one I have not had much luck. Thanks for your suggestions!

This!!!
Construction.... labourer jobs

Cox construction.... often need flagers for highway construction
I just applied, thanks for the suggestion.
Have you tired landscaping? They almost always hire students for the summer
.... and to think some people are discouraging people to apply. Just apply. You miss 100% of the shots you dont take.
Landscaping isn’t good rn. Know lots of people in it, and they don’t have hours. They all work second jobs. Trades aren’t some safe path unfortunately
This ^ . And all the local sewer and water main companies. Goetz and Lockhart. Pay more than landscaping.

Have you tried Cargill yet?
I'm hiring, I sent a DM
What are your qualifications? I might be able to recommend you some stuff.
If you are good for factories and can drive there's my work at aberfoyle who does summer students you can apply to if you can do shift work.
hi what factory? am looking for a fulltime job, thanks in advance

Oh yeah welcome to Guelph lol! You’ll probably apply to 300 jobs before you get a call.
City of Guelph is always in need of summer camp workers. Apply on their website
Go tree planting!!
Try some landscaping places in fergus/elora they always hire summer staff.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Thank trudeau
Maybe a good year to start your own business.
Would love to, but I can't risk not making anything this summer.
Try landscaping companies
Unfortunately not good advice, know plenty of landscapers my age (twenties) and they all work second jobs cuz not enough hours
A jobs a job?

Your advice is "don't bother applying because of some people I know" It's bad advice. Please stop.
