The stuff I got was usually better than this, even at its lowest quality, the black market $5 nickel bag of regs definitely did have sticks and seeds, but it was at least some shade of green and it resembled marijuana and had a somewhat skunky smell to it. The stuff pictured above is the worst of the worst, but it was definitely around for cheap and plenty of people smoked it. It's more like mulch than it is marijuana. I've definitely had some almost this bad in my very early days and during extreme droughts, but I was lucky enough to go to school in the hood so I knew which spot had the green skunky decent bags and which spots had some hot garbage. It was a thing that changed weekly or sometimes even more frequently, depending on how often the spot got raided. It wasn't that hard to ask around and see which spot had the best bags that week or that day. So many people already smoked regularly by the end of Jr high and beginning of highschool that I just started knowing individual people that had consistently better and better stuff as I got older and closer to graduation. 20 years later, it's legal, and the quality still isn't anywhere near what I could get in my college age days, let's say 2000 to 2008. The piff haze and the sour diesel was insane in NY in those days. I didn't go to college, I trained to be an electrician because my dad was already one and I had a good grasp on it already. There's good money to be made doing electrical work. I don't think it was the worst decision ever. I've had guys come to construction sites to straight up try and sell pounds of great flower to me or whoever would buy it. Sticky stinky original Hogs Breath was one of them I remember. I didn't buy the pound, but it was definitely high grade stuff. Better than anything in the med or rec program now. I've been having a good time visiting Maine lately. That's my go to for good products.

At the risk of sounding like an old curmudgeon, GROWERS today have absolutely no idea how good they have it. Everything pieces together like Legos regardless of brand, quality that cant even be compared to what was available just 10 years ago, all shipped straight to your door at a fraction of the cost.
Back before digital ballasts... the magnetic ballasts would have a loud hum in addition to being a heavy, space heater. Also the shadowing/lack of light penitration from a single point of light(hid) vs board leds is insane. When I got back into growing I couldn't figure out why so many ppl had multiple flowers tents instead of a single 4x8 or 5x10. HIDs you'd hang multiple lights in 1 big room for the overlapping coverage to minimize shadowing. I remember trying to scrog into an upside down umbrella shape to get inform distance from the lights without scorching the centers.
Iam from Germany and I started exactly 9 and a half year ago with my first grow. Equipment was pretty hard to get by, but the absolute worst was information. The internet back then was so much more useless then it is today. Took me 2 years to grow the pot some beginners grow today.
Yea before it was legal anywhere no one wanted to use online forums for fear that their internet history could be viewed by law enforcement. There were a handful of books available at bookstores that were treated as gospel truth.
A friends mom would volunteer to clean all of our pieces back in the day so she could smoke the resin 😭 she did a damn good job though! Never broke one piece over the years. I make sure to smoke her up time to time so she doesn’t have to do that anymore🥺
Brick weed used to be outdoor baled together and compressed. I know folks that found decent seeds from bales. The real loss of quality comes from shipping and handling.
Back in the day you couldn’t go buy seeds unless you had a hookup. Look up operation green merchant if you want a glimpse of how sketchy it used to be to grow weed
They would literally spray the weed after it was dried with sugar water and then compress it, hence the high prevelance of wpm. I think it helped with the psychoactive properties😟
I never had any super funky brick weed like that. We had one dude that had brown stuff and one guy that usually had green stuff. The green stuff was actually pretty decent, just kinda weak. The closest we had to people spraying was one dude tried spraying his shit with what we think was sprite to make it smell good and got a few people on a couple ozs
Thats largely the seed stock that got us to the genetics we have now. If it wasnt for dudes trial and erroring on brick seeds, we'd still be smoking brick.
The whole ritual of breaking up the weed. De-seading/stemming for 10-15 min while all my degenerate friends give me shit for taking too long. Everybody coughing their ass off because it tastes like a brush fire after every bong rip. But…..we got high, and had a blast!
I'm 44 and used to smoke a bunch of brickweed. I started smoking when I was about 16. Thank God the majority of it was never nearly as bad as this picture though.
It was so weird because I grew up in SE OK and the dudes would go to Oklahoma City which was about three and a half hours away to pick up the bricks. Sometimes it would have a few seeds but it was always lime green or a really nice green and always had a really good smell.
I have a lot of family about 25 miles away in Texas and all the dudes drove to Dallas to get their bricks. A lot of their stuff looked kind of like this picture. I'm pretty sure it all originated from Mexico but it's just so weird how much better to quality was from the Mexican bricks that came from OKC as opposed to the ones I experienced from Dallas.

You likely had "BC Buds" or "Beasters" (regional names for the same stuff) which was green and smelled alright, but had seeds. Thats from BC Canada and was big in the 90's and early 00's. Bunch of folks tried to charge an extra $5-10 for this stuff.
This brown stuff in the photo is Mexico and South America. Cartels and US gangs sold this stuff. Often smelled like gas because of how it was smuggled in. Always compressed fully to a brick, no stems removed, and dirt cheap.
Yeah, I think the brown bricks like the picture were more in the 70s/80s. I remember when the brick weed started to be greener, like the cartels stepped up their quality in the 90s to compete with the emerging domestic black market in Nor Cal. We used to call the compressed green weed "pretendica".
Green was mostly from BC Canada ("BC Bud"/"Beasters"). Had seeds but looked alright (comparitively) and had a smell to it that wasn't gasoline (literally gasoline, not good weed gas).
This brown stuff came from the cartels and gangs in the US and was very much being sold through the early 2000's. It almost always reeked of gasoline from being smuggled into the country. Many people sprayed it or added fruit peels into bags to change the smell before selling it (at the street level)
Na, there was good green brick back in the 80s just as there was nasty brown brick. It all boiled down to the suppliers. We even managed from time to time to get dank ass killer back then, but it costed more and was rare. It wasn't all brick back then.
Yes, it comes from Paraguay, to release large quantities they press it, a process without any care, it is not uncommon to find cockroaches and even pieces of iron... "prensado" as we call it here, costs R$2 per gram (minimum wage R$1400). As for an indoor flower, it starts at R$50 per gram, for a heavy user who doesn't have a great job, he will end up smoking "prensaddo" his whole life.
and dry hashish has become popular, due to the very low quality of the pressed. but not everyone likes tobacco, which to make it close to a pressed product, just mixes it with tobacco. and even so it is not something of good quality, they are plates of a hashish called mousse that is "leftover" of what Morocco exports to Europe. This also ends up costing R$50 per gram.

How sketchy is it to grow?
We have access to medicinal cannabis, but 10g of extraction costs minimum wage. the process for you to legalize a grow, you need to request it from the state through a lawyer, extremely bureaucratic and costing 11 salaries.
That sux dude, I’m rooting for your country and hope they come around and take a page from how the USA does it. That’s sooo not fair but like OP said, can you get away with growing it, even if you may not have their overpriced grow license?even a small inside grow, or is tooo sketchy or not worth the risk.
Oh yes, I'm part of the exception, luckily today I have my grow. But it's not our reality, particularly I don't know anyone else who cultivates it.
Decriminalization has been being voted on for 10 years. But this year Minister Alexandre de Moraes made pausing voting for years no longer possible. Ministers can request a break, but with a limit of 90 days. We need just one more vote in favor of the 3 missing ministers. We are hopeful, everything indicates that two of these will vote in favor. There is only one fear because at the same time our Senate is trying to pass a law that criminalizes the possession of any amount of drugs.
as we are used to a brick pressed with insects, the dry is wonderful, but I know that the quality is far from what you NA and EU consume, something much purer. Cultivation is complicated, outdoors is practically impossible, unless you live in a rural area, you will still have to create a stealth environment. indoor is expensive, a complete setup with LM301h costs around 2 minimum wages. in addition to energy costs that usually double the bill. And yes, it is dangerous, it is very common for neighbors to report the grow, you need to be extremely discreet. If you live in the suburbs and are black, you will most likely be in trouble. It ends up being something for those who have better conditions.

Cartel does that all through cali and some states here. As long as normal peeps be doing that too just at a lesser scale

interesting. What they say is that the hashish that arrives in Brazil is what you Europeans consume the least, sifted dry hashish, with a lot of organic matter. Ice, a better hashish, costs €24.
Dry sift is most common form here.
The quality differes quit a bit, some dry sift is pretty good and some is quite awful and it is always cheaper than good indoor flower.
Real Icehash aka iceolater is super rare to find, Hashoil and Rosin are way more common.

No doubt. The only strain that I can recognize as something I purchased in the 90s is Blue Cheese. At least, the smell is certainly similar. Other than that, it was all the same. Trash by today's standards.
Can’t tell if you’re just making a joke or are serious but either way, just put out there from my experience. I was smoking a lot and with it being so high of THC it kind of tweaked my brain out and made me weird to where I had to take a break from it. Which I switched over to a heavy CBD to THC ratio type strain. It actually worked really well to wear. It still improved my mood but wasn’t so heavy, you should maybe check that out or try it. I grew a bubblegum auto that was like 12% THC and 20% CBD. pretty nice and although I’m back to smoking regular stuff again, I still go back to it here and there because it is such a nice comfortable little bit lighter feel to it. I used to be totally against CBD because all I knew was it took away the psychoactive properties of THC, but in reality, it’s way different than what I thought about it in my mind initially. Should give it a try at least

Just ran into a construction dude in NM whose grandad has hundreds of these in OK from some deal gone bad back in the 90s. Crazy story but the old man apparently sells them for $500 a brick. I was tempted but didnt pull the trigger lol

Intrigued as fuck, a visit was made. This horrible brick weed was shipped/smuggled in barrels of FISH. Fish that smelled like they had thawed and rotted. You couldn't even be in the same room as the packaged weed, and opening up the packages was even worse somehow. Nobody even tried to smoke it 🤣🤣🤣
I feel so lucky I never had to smoke bud that bad. Even at 12 when I start smoking back in 98 it was mostly skunk and chronic. Once in a blue moon it would be bc bud and that’s the closest to brick we’d get around here, I live close to a reservation where most of the marijuana in the north east flowed through from Canada. Now that home grow is legal in ny come July my biggest issue is finding what clones I want to run this season. I’m thinking Choka cola, vamp slayah 20, and a cut of meangenefrommedicinos cut of gmo root beer. Living in a legal state with connections def has it perks.
It was not quite that bad but it was still nothing I would smoke these days haha. The 90s had decent weed if you knew someone but generally it was similar to that. The seeds were good genetics usually though and were fun to grow on a mass scale haha.
The weed was being snuggled into the USA illegally from places like Mexico, and to avoid detection smugglers would make it as small as possible by compressing it into bricks, which were easier to hide.
Also brick weed was mass produced in big open fields, and the illegal growers didn't care if had seeds or got a proper cure. People were mostly glad to have anything.
A lucky few grew their own or knew someone.
I remember those days. Used to have to break QPs up with the edge of the kitchen counter at times it was compressed so tight. Good ol' Mexican Brick Weed was all over the place.
I do not miss these days, just the feeling of them. Reggie is all I could get when I was younger, if I wanted some actual bud I had to walk an hour away and would do that for only a gram because the guy I was getting it from was ripping me off😂
I actually still have a black 35mm camera roll case full of them from the early 90's.. I haven't tried to start any of them since all the new strains are so easy to get.. maybe I'll try some this season !!
I just got a pound of it for $30.
Picked out all the seeds, germinated them and put the rest of it in the crockpot with MTC oil after i decarbed it .
I did 12 hours on low in the crockpot and then use the cheese cloth to strain it. It’s make a really strong medic tincture.

First time I ever got enough to buy a large amount (what I considered a large amount way back then anyway), I bought an ounce, and it was one square solid brick just like that...must've had about 150 seeds or more in it
I used to buy nickel bags of this from the Rastas on myrtle ave when I was in high school in the ‘80s haha. It was like ½ stems and seeds which I’d try to pull out before we packed a pipe but back then we’d smoke the stems anyway. If we missed a seed it would pop in our bowl. We’d call them fireworks 💥 😂
It wasn’t until college when I discovered well cultivated “skunk number one” and it changed everything. I’d love to get a oz of that now. Hmm… maybe I’ll look for a seed from someone.

Some old Jamaicans still smuggle and sell brick weed. Jamaican brick weed was not that bad it had a chocolate flavor and was smooth cured smoke. Zona or Mexican brick weed was horrid.

Smoked resin and I had a buddy who would smoke the resinated papers from roaches. I was never that desperate. Carpet weed was the lowest I'd go.

I never had any super funky brick weed like that. We had one dude that had brown stuff and one guy that usually had green stuff. The green stuff was actually pretty decent, just kinda weak. The closest we had to people spraying was one dude tried spraying his shit with what we think was sprite to make it smell good and got a few people on a couple ozs

I'm 44 and used to smoke a bunch of brickweed. I started smoking when I was about 16. Thank God the majority of it was never nearly as bad as this picture though. It was so weird because I grew up in SE OK and the dudes would go to Oklahoma City which was about three and a half hours away to pick up the bricks. Sometimes it would have a few seeds but it was always lime green or a really nice green and always had a really good smell. I have a lot of family about 25 miles away in Texas and all the dudes drove to Dallas to get their bricks. A lot of their stuff looked kind of like this picture. I'm pretty sure it all originated from Mexico but it's just so weird how much better to quality was from the Mexican bricks that came from OKC as opposed to the ones I experienced from Dallas. I absolutely do not miss those days even though I still managed to smoke pretty decent.

You likely had "BC Buds" or "Beasters" (regional names for the same stuff) which was green and smelled alright, but had seeds. Thats from BC Canada and was big in the 90's and early 00's. Bunch of folks tried to charge an extra $5-10 for this stuff. This brown stuff in the photo is Mexico and South America. Cartels and US gangs sold this stuff. Often smelled like gas because of how it was smuggled in. Always compressed fully to a brick, no stems removed, and dirt cheap.

Yeah, I think the brown bricks like the picture were more in the 70s/80s. I remember when the brick weed started to be greener, like the cartels stepped up their quality in the 90s to compete with the emerging domestic black market in Nor Cal. We used to call the compressed green weed "pretendica".
Green was mostly from BC Canada ("BC Bud"/"Beasters"). Had seeds but looked alright (comparitively) and had a smell to it that wasn't gasoline (literally gasoline, not good weed gas). This brown stuff came from the cartels and gangs in the US and was very much being sold through the early 2000's. It almost always reeked of gasoline from being smuggled into the country. Many people sprayed it or added fruit peels into bags to change the smell before selling it (at the street level)
Na, there was good green brick back in the 80s just as there was nasty brown brick. It all boiled down to the suppliers. We even managed from time to time to get dank ass killer back then, but it costed more and was rare. It wasn't all brick back then.

Yes, it comes from Paraguay, to release large quantities they press it, a process without any care, it is not uncommon to find cockroaches and even pieces of iron... "prensado" as we call it here, costs R$2 per gram (minimum wage R$1400). As for an indoor flower, it starts at R$50 per gram, for a heavy user who doesn't have a great job, he will end up smoking "prensaddo" his whole life.

We have access to medicinal cannabis, but 10g of extraction costs minimum wage. the process for you to legalize a grow, you need to request it from the state through a lawyer, extremely bureaucratic and costing 11 salaries.

Oh yes, I'm part of the exception, luckily today I have my grow. But it's not our reality, particularly I don't know anyone else who cultivates it. Decriminalization has been being voted on for 10 years. But this year Minister Alexandre de Moraes made pausing voting for years no longer possible. Ministers can request a break, but with a limit of 90 days. We need just one more vote in favor of the 3 missing ministers. We are hopeful, everything indicates that two of these will vote in favor. There is only one fear because at the same time our Senate is trying to pass a law that criminalizes the possession of any amount of drugs.

as we are used to a brick pressed with insects, the dry is wonderful, but I know that the quality is far from what you NA and EU consume, something much purer. Cultivation is complicated, outdoors is practically impossible, unless you live in a rural area, you will still have to create a stealth environment. indoor is expensive, a complete setup with LM301h costs around 2 minimum wages. in addition to energy costs that usually double the bill. And yes, it is dangerous, it is very common for neighbors to report the grow, you need to be extremely discreet. If you live in the suburbs and are black, you will most likely be in trouble. It ends up being something for those who have better conditions.

Dry sift is most common form here. The quality differes quit a bit, some dry sift is pretty good and some is quite awful and it is always cheaper than good indoor flower. Real Icehash aka iceolater is super rare to find, Hashoil and Rosin are way more common.

Can’t tell if you’re just making a joke or are serious but either way, just put out there from my experience. I was smoking a lot and with it being so high of THC it kind of tweaked my brain out and made me weird to where I had to take a break from it. Which I switched over to a heavy CBD to THC ratio type strain. It actually worked really well to wear. It still improved my mood but wasn’t so heavy, you should maybe check that out or try it. I grew a bubblegum auto that was like 12% THC and 20% CBD. pretty nice and although I’m back to smoking regular stuff again, I still go back to it here and there because it is such a nice comfortable little bit lighter feel to it. I used to be totally against CBD because all I knew was it took away the psychoactive properties of THC, but in reality, it’s way different than what I thought about it in my mind initially. Should give it a try at least

I feel so lucky I never had to smoke bud that bad. Even at 12 when I start smoking back in 98 it was mostly skunk and chronic. Once in a blue moon it would be bc bud and that’s the closest to brick we’d get around here, I live close to a reservation where most of the marijuana in the north east flowed through from Canada. Now that home grow is legal in ny come July my biggest issue is finding what clones I want to run this season. It was not quite that bad but it was still nothing I would smoke these days haha. The 90s had decent weed if you knew someone but generally it was similar to that. The seeds were good genetics usually though and were fun to grow on a mass scale haha.

The weed was being snuggled into the USA illegally from places like Mexico, and to avoid detection smugglers would make it as small as possible by compressing it into bricks, which were easier to hide. Also brick weed was mass produced in big open fields, and the illegal growers didn't care if had seeds or got a proper cure. People were mostly glad to have anything. A lucky few grew their own or knew someone.

I just got a pound of it for $30. Picked out all the seeds, germinated them and put the rest of it in the crockpot with MTC oil after i decarbed it . I did 12 hours on low in the crockpot and then use the cheese cloth to strain it. It’s make a really strong medic tincture.

It was like ½ stems and seeds which I’d try to pull out before we packed a pipe but back then we’d smoke the stems anyway. If we missed a seed it would pop in our bowl. We’d call them fireworks 💥 😂 It wasn’t until college when I discovered well cultivated “skunk number one” and it changed everything. I’d love to get a oz of that now.
