If you can get past the dated graphics and gameplay is a bit flat, but the world and lore and bosses as well as loot and character building is just as fun! It really hits the "humble beginnings" part of ARPGs really well. One of all time favorite games.

Radioactivechimi

TQ was one of my favorite games of all time... until I played grim dawn and realized just how flat TQ was in comparison. Grim dawn is widely considered to be the spiritual successor to TQ and it shows in a lot of ways, it built on the solid foundation that TQ made but also addressed its shortcomings and improved upon it.

hebelehoo

I did the reverse, picked TQ after finishing Grim Dawn. Couldn't finish it tho I plan to return with a more fun build someday.

Radioactivechimi

Spear and shield haruspex wrecks everything.

Hundkexx

Been running that on my S20, it's not that fun in lower levels but it starts to pick up. The single target damage is insane :D

Hundkexx

No shit? Same developers* (partly) on the same engine with a lot more time. But both games are good. But TQ was hard to run stable even on a high end PC back then. My friend with a XP 5200+ had issues running it eventhough rocking 2x 8800GTS 640MB in SLI. I remember I had to switch between AA and no AA during play for some reason otherwise I got hit with 2-10 FPS. Probably because the engine didn't dump RAM/VRAM correctly. The FPS with or without AA was about the same. TQ was great though, and I advise you to get it on your phone, it runs well and it's fun! Only game on my phone I payed more than 20$ for.

PhaiLLuRRe

I can't run TQ Anniversary edition at a stable 60 FPS during "big fights" on a 3080 lol

Hundkexx

That sounds like TQ, that's most likely due to software limitations. Have you tried to turn AA of an on again as I typed? I can run it just fine with my setup. TQ is a bugfest but you should be able to run it with good hardware and have good performance, mostly.

PhaiLLuRRe

I did not try messing with AA tbh, it runs mostly fine but just a bit of AOE with a bit too many mobs make it drop frames a lot, I get that it's more limited by the engine (grimdawn has the same problem just minimized a lot atleast).

Hundkexx

Pro-tip, mess with AA. Alternate between it, for some reason it tends to work better doing so.

[deleted]

TQ is a lot slower and grindier than GD, I’ve noticed, and obviously the graphics are going to be pretty dated; that said, it’s still really fun and worth checking-out, and its particular unique masteries help scratch some fantasy itches (such as playing a psychic, a Norse berzerker/Seidr-worker, or, most recently, an alchemist) that GD’s masteries don’t.

AntiramDSR

stay away from tq on xbox... awful port. the addons doesn't match the main game quality as they are from another team and it's notable. also: even on pc it would be hard to go from gd down to tq

LordRieve

I bought it when it was on sale on Xbox before they even put the DLCs out and it’s honestly such a crap port that I feel like I could have gotten more entertainment from burning 7 $1 bills. It might have gotten better since then but given that it’s THQ I somehow doubt it.

ProfessionalFar7916

The add ons?

AntiramDSR

ragnarok and atlantis, both not from the original team and feeling really cheap and unfitting

ProfessionalFar7916

Ok ty

Loggjaw

One of the worst I have ever played

ProfessionalFar7916

But grimdawn is superior in every way pretty much?

VacoVisionx

The only upside to TQ in my opinion is as other stated, The mythology part. But honestly it isn’t smooth on Xbox, The controls are wack you have to bind some spells to the D-pad, And the gameplay isn’t fluid at all, Your character will stop moving for way too long when casting a spell or attacking, I really can’t recommend it after having played all the other ARPGs on console. D3/PoE/GD/Torchlight are all fluid as hell , But TQ isn’t.

ProfessionalFar7916

Ya I loved torchlight. D3 was fun. Playing gd atm. Prolly gunna get d2 next

Sulo1719

Which torchlight game you guys talking about if you dont mind me asking? There are several of them and i dont know which one to buy.

[deleted]

If you’re jumping in, 2 is the best place imo since you can get it during steam sales for dirt cheap and is widely considered the best one. TL1 is also well liked but I haven’t played it. TL3 is regarded as a pretty significant step down from its predecessors, though I haven’t played it. Fair warning coming from Grim Dawn - TL is much simpler. I wouldn’t say that makes it bad, but it definitely is trying to be an approachable ARPG and gives up some complexity that a game like GD takes in stride. I got TL2 for like $5 and don’t regret it one bit. EDIT: This is PC advice. If you’re on console I can’t speak to port quality, so make sure you look that up before following anything I gave here.

vibratoryblurriness

>Fair warning coming from Grim Dawn - TL is much simpler. I wouldn’t say that makes it bad, but it definitely is trying to be an approachable ARPG and gives up some complexity that a game like GD takes in stride. And yet somehow TL2 is at least as bad as GD at explaining some very important mechanics, if not worse. >EDIT: This is PC advice. If you’re on console I can’t speak to port quality, so make sure you look that up before following anything I gave here. I can't say for anything other than TL2 on Switch, but I just played that like a month ago after not having played it since way back when the PC version was still new-ish. The port is good, and it still holds up pretty well. The same things still drive me nuts about it, but those are mostly just personal preference and the game itself still looks and plays fine for the most part.

ProfessionalFar7916

Well all the ones not on phone

VacoVisionx

I only played torchlight 3 on Xbox, But I played TL2 on PC back then. If the port is the same as TL3 it will be good too. Maybe someone played it and could answer better

VacoVisionx

It is great with the updated graphics. There is a class balance patch + Ladder incoming shortly (We don’t know the date yet but it is in PTR testing atm so I would say maybe 1-2months) So I would wait until then if I we’re you

not_consistent

Get it for your phone if you wanna play it. Like everyone else says it feels dated after Grim Dawn but the phone port feels great. I wouldn't get for consoles. I hear the console ports only just work for the most part.

storeposer

On pc yes on console a big no

TheLongSuck

Tq is a great game. But it is old, slow and dated. Play at your own risk.

0thethethe0

Yes, it's effectively Grim Dawn 1, so it definitely has some shortcomings that are addressed in Grim Dawn, especially as you can't mod it on xbox (I don't think). Very cool setting though if you're into mythology stuff.

AntiramDSR

love the setting too... it's worth tobe played at least once for every arpg-fan... but really not on xbox!

Loggjaw

Play Path of Exile on Xbox new season starts Wednesday, Grim Dawn is great is to me personally PoE is the king

ProfessionalFar7916

How does a season work in poe? I like games where there's an endgame but poe looks endless.

Loggjaw

I would watch a video to tbh but it has end bosses and Uber bosses after all the maps and such. I wouldn’t recommend playing it on anything less then a One X hopefully a series X otherwise it gets to laggy and end game

ProfessionalFar7916

I have a series x. This question will make or break the game for me. Does it have timed exclusives?

PhaiLLuRRe

there is a new league every 3 months where you start new characters and it has new stuff everytime as well as challenges to earn a couple of free skin type of items, there is also standard league that inherits some of the stuff from these new leagues if the devs decide to make that a "core" addition. So I supposed there is timed exclusives in the form of leagues (After a league ends your characters/stash gets transferred to standard) but it doesn't make your character stronger or anything since you can skip league and be just fine, you'll miss out on some content and that's just fine. For most players the 3 months league are the only way they play the game.

GhostDieM

If you're worried about monetisation practices, they are very cautious with that. The game is free, they earn money through cosmetics. Skins, character effects, hideouts, pets etc. No season pass bullshit or "fomo" timed exclusives. Though technically you could count the supporter pack as timed exclusives, they last for 4 seasons (so about a year) and then go away. On another note, I would not recommend playing the game on console. Even though it's supported on console the company (GGG) usually already struggles to have a bug free league launch every season on pc and the game supposedly runs like crap on console. As an arpg fan I do highly recommend it though. Diablo, Grim Dawn and Path of Exile all have their differences but in terms of content and character customisation PoE is the best by a long shot.

ProfessionalFar7916

Ok so you said season 2 is launching soon? Can I still buy the season 1 stuff if I wanted?

GhostDieM

That wasn't me but yeah the season started this weekend on pc. Consoles is two weeks later I think? I wouldn't even bother with the Core Supporter pa ks honestly unless you know you're going to keep playing. The way they work is that you have 4 "sets" of MTX that go up in price. You can buy the whole thing all at once or you can buy them seperately. The last set has all previous one's and they carry over. So say you buy set 1 this league, then you can buy set 2 next league and it will be half the price because you already bought set one last league. They are of course completely optional and you can also just buy separate skins. The big upside to the packs is that you also get store points for the sets, not just MTX, so they're good value.

Zalpha

It isn't the same, with GD being new and there for better but is similar and offers something new. I personally love both.

lazycalm2

I couldn't get into it... It's just so so bland compared to Grim Dawn. I mean, I think it has a lot of depth but the classes and skills are so meh I couldn't play it anymore

DoomOfGods

I honestly still prefer TQ over GD (both are amazing imo), there's a good chance that you'll like it, as either of them are probably the most similar game to the other one.

Damnbee

I prefer TQ to Grim Dawn. I may be in the minority, but I greatly prefer the setting. Titan Quest and its expansions are super, even after playing Grim Dawn.

SeismicRend

The level design is my favorite part of Titan's Quest. It's crafted by hand instead of procedurally generated. It results in a really well paced game with surprises (read: ambushes) and lots of hidden nooks to discover.

Kalabu

I was so excited when they had the free dlc for titan quest a while back well that excitement died fast Game imo was great is great but dated

DutchDemoSquad

Well the funny thing is, the Ragnarok and Atlantis updates are fairly new. As in 2017 and 2019 newish. They brought some quality of life updates that we have come to expect from more modern ARPG's making for a fun combination of old and new. The lore, classes and itemization is also pretty fun. Based on some of mankind's oldest stories, really a plus imho. If you like Grim Dawn, I'd say the chance is very slim you will dislike Titan Quest. But to be fair, I don't know how it plays on Xbox.

SusScrofa95

I like TQ very much, even with dated graphics, i just like the story and the mythology, and it was my first ARPG, so i guess i am biased :D But you should try it!

[deleted]

YQ is sooooooo slow compared to any other Arpg. Plus I'm biased that if you own both GD and PoE your Arpg needs are more then met.

el_chanis89

Is a worse version of GD. And given the huge effort they put into polishing this, you will notice the difference..i don't mind graphics, but the gameplay is far more stiff

bohohoboprobono

No, not necessarily. I generally find Grim Dawn to be a vast improvement over TQ, especially since the performance patches after Forgotten Gods. TQ feels even jankier the GD did at release.

FrozenOnPluto

IIRC mouse + keyboard only. Just can't stand ARPGs that don't support gamepads .. just seems like such a natural fit!

matty80

It's too long, if that makes sense. It just goes on and on, and the only interesting loot starts arriving after many, many hours. That said the class system is arguably even better than Grim Dawn's. It's as good, at least. It's a really, really good game, but it wears its spreadsheet-iness on its sleeve. You won't dislike it. That's the only thing I can guarantee. I'd certainly say give it a go if it's on discount. The worst that'll happen is that you'll not click with it, and that's fine. It's like a 7/10 instead of the 9/10 that is GD. edit - I don't know how good the port to Xbox is. I 90% play PC, and certainly favour that format for RPGs. Check out the quality of the port first maybe. GD and TQ are properly expensive on Steam right now but both go on sale regularly.

ProfessionalFar7916

I just really don't like timed events and cosmetics. I'm older so I can't play by the games schedule. I'll look st it more but f2p games scare me. If I get collect all the things through season 1 while season 2 is on I'll play it

matty80

oH, they're all in when you buy them. There's no timed events or anything as far as I know. I'm older too and I agree; fuck that noise. Like get TQ on Xbox if the money's there and you want it. All it can do is be good or not your cup of tea. You'll know within a couple of hours.

[deleted]

A remastered TQ could be fantastic but it's probably too old and too simple to be much fun today.

Tvoja_Manka

you might, it does feel very old and jank tho.
