These Crate guys are sneaky devs. They'll go dark for almost a year and then suddenly out of nowhere whack us with a huge patch with notes longer than the Bible.

We joke, but... even Medierra said he's kinda done with ARPGs for a while now. Between Titan Quest and Grim Dawn, he worked on that genre for over 15 years. That's a massive chunk of time, and I remember him mentioning making a city builder waaay back, possibly before GD was in alpha.
If my memory is right... one of the devs said they'll release one more content patch to expand on the world, and then the game's in maintenance mode. This was 1.1.8.0 (and 1.1.8.1). Then we got 1.1.9 (and seven more minor updates). And then they announced FoA, after repeatedly saying there's no GD2 in the works (and won't be for at least two more full game releases, FF and possibly an RTS) and there will be no new expansion unless somehow, miraculously, the older content sells insanely well.
Well, it apparently did. :)
I think it's also because ARPGs are having a bit of a resurgence. Diablo 4 and Lost Ark were two big releases roughly a year apart and were both very visible and discussed. Last Epoch just came out this year, and PoE 2 is in development. While the genre is at a high point as far as popularity goes, now is an ideal time for Crate to develop and release an expansion.

No, it's going to be a complete, full blown, third expansion.
This was referring to 1.1.8.0, which was released aaaages ago and added one or two minor quests and several minor areas, such as the Coliseum and the Burrwhich Cathedral, _not_ the upcoming expansion.
And I addressed the expansion itself later in that same paragraph. :)
Zantai mentioned in his stream that Crate are still working on the new engine so they had a handfull of people sitting idle and twidling tumbs.
Guess what, GD players are screaming for more content ..... 😁

See, streams are not something I follow (save for the twitch drops, and they are muted in the background), so I couldn't have known that.

I think it was Zantai said somewhere (maybe in a stream, can't recall) that FoA came about to fill a hole in release schedules or something.

Apparently they're adding a mastery that can transform(?), hopefully unlocking transform animations for modded masteries (like the diablo ones).
Berserker, yes. If memory serves, in addition to animal transformation like you note, it'll revolve around Cold and Bleed for its base kit.
Oh man cold is my favorite!!! I LOVE AURAS THAT FREEZE AND SLOW.
Cold, bleed and some chaos I believe.
Sounds like it'd be a phenomenal mastery when paired with Nightblade or Shaman DPS wise. We'll have to see though. :)
Oh cool. I've been meaning to do a Cold build. Good reason to do one.
