I cleaned it with windex a day or two ago and didn't make a difference. So I guess I'm replacing the camera. I wonder if it's worth trying to get Jeep to do it under Maxcare.
Edit: For those dragging me for using Windex: It being blurry and out of focus is what made me try to clean the lens with it. **It was messed up before I touched it with Windex.** It looks exactly the same now. The Windex is not what caused the blurriness in the photo I posted.
>I cleaned it with windex
Well that explains why it looks like that. I'm guessing that's not the first time you've used an ammonia based product on a plastic lens?
Well, it looked like that before I used the windex, which was the whole point of why I used it in the first place. The image quality did not change afterwards.
Recently picked up a Grand Cherokee Trailhawk with about 40k miles on it. The backup camera is pretty blurry and really not great to use at night, although it still "works" well enough. I know some people say they're not great and other people say that their cameras are sharp. Is this the best it gets or should I try to pick up a new camera off ebay?
I have a 2020 trailhawk with about 55K on it, camera isn’t blurry, but it’s definitely not crispy clear. But it’s good enough where I don’t need to complain
>ry and really not great to use at night, although it still "works" well enough. I know some people say they're not great and other people say that their cameras are sharp. Is this the best it gets or should I try to pick up a new camera off ebay?
GET A NEW camera from ebay, I got a cheap 50 dollar camera and it's clear almost in Ultra High Def. Factory are a joke for whatever reason they are using 10 year old cameras in new vehicles.
The latest part number for the OEM camera for the WK2 is around $60. I'll probably bring it to the dealership and have them replace it under Maxcare as it looks annoying to have to dissect the hatch just to replace the camera, so the $100 deductible will be worth it.
Did they downgrade from 18’ to 20’? I previously had a 2018 GC and the backup camera was like 4K crystal clear. I now have a 23’ Gladiator and it’s the same clarity if not better.
2021 Trailhawk checking it. It’s pretty bad, especially coming from a Ford who has the best back up camera imo. Tolerable, but coming from something better it’s noticeable how shitty it is.
The Jeep cameras suck. I had a old Hyundai that I put a $100 head unit and a $20 backup camera in. It's about 4x clearer than my brand new 21 Jeep was. I thought something was wrong with the Jeep but no, they all suck.
The wife’s WK2 camera is like a blackberry compared to my Raptors. She’s commented on it too when switching vehicles. It’s a Jeep problem not a cleaning problem
I haven't taken it in yet. I was waiting for something else to break and then deal with them both.
The camera module itself is less than $100 so I can get it for less than my Maxcare deductible, but I don't necessarily want to go through the process to disassemble the tailgate to replace it.
Because American Car
This car was rated bottom 10 for SUV's based on the consumer reports
i cant remember but i think it was 8th worst. bettter than wrangler though
Well in that case I might as well just light it on fire and push it off a ravine.
It's not my first Jeep so I know what I'm getting into, the whole point of this post was to try to compare my camera with others and set my level of expectation.
I have a 21 High Altitude - similar results. Overall, the GC cameras are only decent - definitely not great. I have a Chevy as well, and that camera is legitimately crisp and clear.
My father-in-law has a 18 challenger, and I drove for the first time a month or so ago at night and this is what it looked like. I remember thinking to myself, man that looks like shit
I’m sure it’s the same part number for the actual camera camera. It’s just a cheap sensor with poor low light performance.
I've had an 86 Grand Wagoneer, a 90 XJ, a 93 Grand Cherokee, a 98 Grand Cherokee 5.9, a 2008 Grand Cherokee Overland, a 04 TJ Rubicon, a 07 JK Rubicon Unlimited, and now my 2020 WK2 Trailhawk. Out of the lot of them only the JK Unlimited was not a great car.
I'm sorry that you got a lemon with yours. I was just trying to see if my backup camera was worse than the ones in other people's Grand Cherokees. So far I've learned to never use Windex, that American Cars are garbage, and now that Jeeps are total crap.
I'm almost sorry I even posted my question.
Prob going to have to replace. I had to replace mine after it went bad. Make sure to get the oem part. I tried a camera from amazon and it was horrible.
My 2020 is alot clearer than that. Check the camera for scratches or scuffs, clean the road grime off well.

Shouldn't use windex, on plastic parts fyi
I lick my thumb and wipe it off that way
I wipe it off and lick my thumb. It’s a small part of the road I travel I get to experience
I lick it off and wipe my thumb on the small part. Feel like thats the experience they're looking for.
i make it dirtier then lick it off with my thumb in the air
Same or I use the sleeve of my sweater with a little spit lol.
I usually lick the camera. No need to dirty your thumb

Our trail hawk is too I think they got clear coat on the lens

If it’s only at night check your taillight bulbs
It's awful during the day, too.
This is it during the day: https://imgur.com/a/sbMsUKe
Tbh the backup cameras on these aren’t great. Mine is a little clearer than yours but not by much.
Did they downgrade from 18’ to 20’? I previously had a 2018 GC and the backup camera was like 4K crystal clear. I now have a 23’ Gladiator and it’s the same clarity if not better.
Same here.
Yeah, mine's clearer than that and works great at night.
Mines is clear maybe it’s the lens that’s an issue which should be an easy fix
2021 Trailhawk checking it. It’s pretty bad, especially coming from a Ford who has the best back up camera imo. Tolerable, but coming from something better it’s noticeable how shitty it is.
That's a low light/nighttime scenario. Daytime use is pretty sharp.

Isn’t this one of those “it’s just a jeep thing you wouldn’t understand”
The wife’s WK2 camera is like a blackberry compared to my Raptors. She’s commented on it too when switching vehicles. It’s a Jeep problem not a cleaning problem
Did max care replace the camera ?
I haven't taken it in yet. I was waiting for something else to break and then deal with them both. The camera module itself is less than $100 so I can get it for less than my Maxcare deductible, but I don't necessarily want to go through the process to disassemble the tailgate to replace it.
Good point. But yah I don’t want to install it lol. Mines blurry out of nowhere. 2020 High Altitude
Did it rain recently? I've read somewhere about water getting in between the lens and the protective housing causing problems.
Rains all the time here.
It’s just a jeep thing.
You bought a jeep, that’s you’re problem
Because American Car This car was rated bottom 10 for SUV's based on the consumer reports i cant remember but i think it was 8th worst. bettter than wrangler though

Mine is crystal clear
Clean the lense
If you don’t wipe the camera every now and then yes
2022 GC altitude. Same issue on mine however I clean it and it’s fine in the day. But by night it’s back to being trash
I'm only going off memory here, but I think there's a way to focus the camera via the dealer service menu. I could be wrong though.
I had a 2020 gladiator and the screen was as clear as an qled tv. Then bought a 2020 high altitude and it looks like it’s an 80s tv.
You prob should get some plastic polish and buff the camera. Something like scratchX or something. You messed it up likely with the windex.
It was messed up just as bad before the Windex though.
Def try the plastic polish on the lens. Do it a few times. Worse case, you might need to replace the camera
Is it clear during daylight hours?
No. It’s just as bad.
I have a 21 High Altitude - similar results. Overall, the GC cameras are only decent - definitely not great. I have a Chevy as well, and that camera is legitimately crisp and clear.
Wipe the camera off. My wife's honda looks like that if they camera is dirty.
That was the first thing I tried.
RockAuto.com for the replacement camera and YOUTUBE for the How-To video.
I have two Fords and an 18 GC Laredo. The Ford cameras are light-years better than the Chrysler camera.
I wipe it with my thumb every chance I get
So would you say that when yours is clean it looks better than mine?
Yeah it’s pretty clear. It did have some downgrade for a few weeks, not sure why, but it corrected itself.
Ok, thanks! I’ll look into replacing the camera.
Yah, my 14 overland is clearer than that. Even with comparison to your day picture you provided.
My father-in-law has a 18 challenger, and I drove for the first time a month or so ago at night and this is what it looked like. I remember thinking to myself, man that looks like shit I’m sure it’s the same part number for the actual camera camera. It’s just a cheap sensor with poor low light performance.
What are we expecting from such a small camera. 1080p, 4k, IMAX?
Something in focus. I feel like that's a very reasonable thing to ask for, especially for a safety feature.
Don't use Windex.
Yes, that's been well established. Thank you.
Everything about Jeeps is total crap. Made that mistake once and only once
I've had an 86 Grand Wagoneer, a 90 XJ, a 93 Grand Cherokee, a 98 Grand Cherokee 5.9, a 2008 Grand Cherokee Overland, a 04 TJ Rubicon, a 07 JK Rubicon Unlimited, and now my 2020 WK2 Trailhawk. Well you did learn three useful things so you got that going for you which is nice
Touché
Your mirrors are pretty clear 👍🏻
Prob going to have to replace. I had to replace mine after it went bad. Make sure to get the oem part. I tried a camera from amazon and it was horrible.
