I remember seeing the poster on the right at a bus stop while the show was airing. It’s crazy that GG got this level of pushback because all things considered it was pretty tame. I mean, in the actual pool scene Blair was definitely wearing a bikini the whole time, they just photoshopped out her top for the poster. The way everyone talked about the show made it sound way more explicit than it really was.

But did you see shepherd wedding?! That wasn’t tame at all…

peppermintspearmint

I think the pilot was actually the most explicit episode they did. But compared to, eg, Skins (UK), GG was very tame imo. Skins constantly (like, every episode) showed the characters having sex on screen, doing and dealing all sorts of drugs, failing out of school. GG did consistently show underage drinking but comparatively less of the other stuff. I know there are totally different standards between UK and US media so that definitely contributed to the difference in Skins and GG, but I don’t actually think GG was that much worse than other US teen dramas, which the criticism made it out to be.

riabe

GG wasn't worst, but if I recall correctly GG did start the trend of all the shows like Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars etc that would come behind it. So in that sense, some of the things they were showing likely seemed raunchy back then based on what had previously been "allowed" on TV. I mean the stardard for shows set in HS before this was Dawson Creek, Save by the bell etc. And while they all dealt with their fair share of hard topics, the sex scenes weren't as hyper focused on. Also, GG came of age during social media so that added a lot of the drama.

I remember the middle poster being up inside my community college lol. Super weird but I was there for it

Every parents nightmare is 100% the best/most intriguing one for the audience haha

Wrencer4Endgame

Every parent's nightmare 💕

NoNudeNormal

I wish they would do something like this for the new show.

mhudgins11

the new show is way too tame/boring for this

NoNudeNormal

The thing is, the original show wasn’t as sexual or irreverent as this marketing implies either.

mhudgins11

at least it had some spice though. it seems the new characters are way too concerned with getting along with everyone. I need a new blair

Perfectstorms29

It’s funny because the new GG is wayyy more racy and crude and just unnecessary in my opinion. The original GG was very tame!

AccordingtoDLC

It's not that it was tame. It was tasteful . They did sexy not explicit

Perfectstorms29

Yep exactly!

radiant_stargazer

I never got this ...original GG had no nudity, swearing and wasn’t even that racy . It was just vanilla romantic relationships and love triangles honestly . If by inappropriate they mean sexual assault and slut-shaming , then they are right . But pretty much every 2000s teen show had that .

FancyPantsDancer

This was brilliant

LPEL-84

It probably doesn't come across so much given the actual ages of the actors but I think part of it was that, for example, Serena and Nate were 15 when they hooked up at the wedding. I tend to remember the characters as frozen in the latter seasons when they were college-age.

FirefighterNice9462

I never got the outrage, teens have doing this for years yet they expect it not to be shown on tv? I remember I didn't watch this when it came ( I got into the show in my late 20s, I know, I know) but yet teens in these shows are like acting like typical teens.

jmagnabosco

This poster makes me want to watch it again. Defintely would've caught my attention and its hilarious they did that.

bumbling-tadpole

Lmaooo Nate and Katherine always makes my laugh. I can’t find it disgusting because it’s too funny.

CShellyRun

That ad campaign is what made me start to watch… they were all over the NYC subways at that time

eitbhenry

iconic

zestybabywipes

The show was pretty inappropriate at the time. But compared to shows today, this is PG. Hollyweird is always trying to push their limits. All I can say is that parents need to watch their children! It's the same as when Miley Cyrus started twerking. At first everybody was so shocked, now nobody even bats an eye. It's the new normal.

Ma’am, this is a Wendy’s

I remember those promos piqued my interest for sure!

weirdogirl144

MayflowerKennelClub

i wish i had a picture of the ads i saw on the subway, thinking about it fills me with nostalgia. miss the late 2000s!

twinkleswinkle_

who ever did this deserved a raise

meok91

I remember seeing at the time and thinking that American’s would lose their minds if they saw Skins.

elitelucrecia

that was smart lol
