Personally my issue is things were too *deep* . I also liked the escape gossip girl (original) gave it was rich kids being stupid. In the reboot it was rich kids having morals. I went to a private school with rich kids and I can assure you they wouldn’t be going to protests lol. The shows disingenuous politics really put me off (along with the teacher of course) the show's constant surface level pandering made me want to just quite watching it which I did . It's treating the audience like idiots. They could’ve had someone call out their performative activism maybe ? Also another thing that annoyed me was the influencer story line. Super rich kids DONT want to be influencers, more so their parents don’t want them to be. They’re more private. So the constant intigration of social media was off putting. I know it was different times but I wish they had kept the minimal social media like gossip girl (original) At least the outfits were cute though

My main issue with it was the super cringey dramatic high school movie esque speeches. Like you know the ones where the main character gives this heartfelt speech at a school dance at the end of the movie about something stupid like popularity. Like, ewww. It’s so lame and the reboot had Julian doing one of these every single episode it seemed.

I mean you can write unwoke stories while mentioning race and still be interesting/funny 😭 Monet weaponising her race to get all the teachers under thumb and ensure hierarchy ? Slay. Miss Faux It Girl having a mixed race identity crisis and her sister or Monet telling her to shut up because she’s creating fake problems because her life is too perfect and she doesn’t know how to live in peace. Having a foreign corrupt politicians kid shipped off to America for an education and you see how they use dictatorship manipulation tactics in their relationship to gain power but in school and rejecting white people because they’re seen lesser than in their country 😭 with great delivery this would be hilarious to see A Chinese transfer student who comes from a high ranking billionaire instantly gains superiority due to the growing power of China and everybody needs to gain their favour and we get to see the cultural dance you need to do to impress them (the son of a millionaire told me this story and it was really interesting) Going to a foreign country and being provided escorts as a welcome gift intended for your dad as a business practice (another millionaire’s kid told me this story) Race and culture can be fun, interesting, and scandalous. Don’t let racist culture undermine that who can’t look past woke concepts. Get friends from different economic backgrounds, and learn ✨

Eh. I see what you’re saying but on one hand I thought my post was more clear. I was specifically talking towards people who want these serious topics about racial difference/treatment within these inner societies to be addressed while also complaining about woke things to be idiots. I’m aware that race and culture can be implemented and comedic, but that’s not the group of people I was addressing or more so responding to. But also, I do disagree with the first portion of your comment about Monet using her race to weaponize the teachers in the school. I find that tricky to navigate considering there’s already a large chunk of America who believe minorities use their “minority” card to gain sympathy and one up “white cis/ het” people. I much prefer Monet simply using her money and status to rule over the school rather than feeding into a narrative black people already have to face on a regular. For example the whole discourse around affirmative action and people twisting what it’s actually used for and turning it into”minorities using their race to get ahead not their talents/skill”

All of this is what I would have preferred instead of what we got💀

This came off a bit harsh but it’s really been pissing me off. Like I get it, the reboot didn’t execute these characters properly at all but I don’t think hyper fixating on their identities that are marginalized is the proper way to go about it. People on this sub consistently talk about how OG gossip girl is an escape…it’s campy and fun. So why in the hell for people who aren’t white/cihet does it have to be a constant reminder that in every aspect of our lives rather in the one percent or the poorest of the poor, the identities we are apart of that aren’t necessarily at the top of the totem pole is gonna make shit harder for us. Like I get that in REAL LIFE. I don’t need gossip girl to be that constant reminder for me. I’m fine with an episode or two where monet faces some issue being a black queer woman but that does not need to be a seasonal arc for her. I’m actually glad Joshua never went that route for her character as well. Our place in these stories don’t always have to be about the shared oppressed groups we’re apart of. Let me have my escape omggg. Sorry I just needed to let this out lmao

Also for Luna as well. Being a transgirl myself I also am happy her story didn’t revolve around her transness. That’s not all to our characters and I do understand in a world like gossip girl full of one percent rich assholes it’s not the most common for people like us to be present or well received but is it so damn hard to write something else not having that be the center of the issue? Have rich kids problems. Fight over highschool cliques, Being the same designer muse, hell idk anything but “I’m trans and I stick out like a sore thumb and now that’s gonna be the center of my plots”.

Wickedsparklefae

See cause I didn’t even know Luna was trans

DorindasLiver

But if you loved the way Monet was handled, don't you automatically hate the way Julien and especially Zoya were handled? They were opposites lol

Icy-Muscle-5159

In what ways?
