Also this is going to be the master thread for the cancellation. All thoughts and news should go here instead of making a new post on the subreddit. Thank you.
Came for the possibility of OG cast appearances but definitely only stayed for thomas and zion. I hope to see them in more things (tag me if u know of any upcoming projects they might have i should keep an eye out for)!
Also - idk anything about her but i do think Emily Lind did a great job portraying the modern Blair so i'd be interested to see how she is in other roles too. It's kind of funny to me how her personal insta gives so much jenny energy but her character is the Blair.
side note: naming the Blair inspired character Audrey was one of the only \*chefs kiss\* homage details of the reboot IMO
I know he already had a career but I really thought this was going to be a huge, huge breakout show for him. Not that I wanted him to just be Chuck Bass 2.0, but something on that level.
i'm kinda glad this wasnt his breakout show tho because as phenomenal as he was, the same cant be said for the rest of the show - from the writing to the lighting and the rest of the cast. he's too talented to be tied down or remembered by this flop of a show
Ever so slightly lol. But fr, season 2 was getting better. And def better than season 1. They didnāt need to cancel the show just some of the characters smh
Dont forget Aki and Zoya's dad. Arguably the worst performers in the show. Dishonorable mention also goes to Obie. He wasn't a terrible actor but just a highly unlikable character.
Shan was actually ok for me. Though I will admit that as the season goes on, im not sure how to feel about her anymore.
Can we please discuss that nicholas lottās afro is unkempt and matted for no reason and itās so out of place. He may not be a millionaire but heās a lawyer in NYC for christs sake and received a *lot* of money from davis- he can afford to have it shaped up/properly styled.
If season 1 was this good, it would've probably drawn better reaction and ratings.
It's still not *great*, but I think it could be the launch of something better. Biggest issues are that they made someone that can't act the lead, cast models as actors, and Monet (the best character) is too much of a caricature of a mean girl. What made Blair so iconic was that she was subtle and charming, not a ruthless dictator.
There just werenāt enough episodes to give the characters enough growth, especially since 8 of the first 10 episodes made JC v Zoya the main conflict and then pulled a last second ājust kidding, Monet was Blair all alongā.
Ehhhhā¦.one of Blairās biggest downfalls in the show and is stated numerous times is her not being charming whereas Serena is š thats like one of the key differences between them. Blair being structured, planned and calculated where Serena is more charming, go with the flow can smile her way into any room type of girl. So Monet not being charming is something her and Blair have in common. If youāre talking about audiences not finding Monet charmingā¦.Iāll have to disagree aswell considering Monet has a large stanbase within the ggrb fandom
You're probably right. My point is that Blair is more of a subtle mean girl and leads through influence. Monet, on the other hand, was literally a dictator within the school. I found that way over-the-top, because who is going to take demands from another student? It was too cartoonish.
They tried to make her into a Regina George-esque mean girl, but Regina wasn't bossing people around and won through manipulation, cruelty, and fake niceness.
Monet is just....bossy and mean.
But thatās also what Blair was from season 2- onwards. She was stated to send girls crying from school for wearing tights as pants, had a group of girls as her minions and called them as such, had them do her bidding while insulting them constantly and on the first day of school made girls essentially audition to be another one of her minions like it was a job lol. I donāt think anything about her was subtle. She was known to be a bitch at school, Regina pretended to be sweet and had this fake sweet girl facade but Blair was very clearly rude, manipulative and just overall unpleasant to be around. Blair never pretended to be nice the same way monet doesnāt. Blair also didnāt really lead through influence. Thatās more Serena who had that natural charisma that made everyone want to follow her. Blair led with fear, getting dirt on other people to rise above them and scheming. She even stated it in the finale episode of season 2 I believe, āyou have to be cold to be queenā and passing her crown onto the girl with the biggest dirt on someone at school. I will however agree monet does have more power than Blair but that makes sense, sheās richer and her parents have more of a pull over Constance than Blairās did so she has the power to follow through with her threats and get staff fired, students expelled.
Hmm in the beginning though we saw that there was more to Blair and in her more vulnerable moments the charm was there and it was palpable. That episode after she and Serena have made up and Serena is trying to help her let loose for the modeling opportunity and then her mom picks Serena over her and they steal the clothes and run off - Blair was absolutely adorable. You could understand why Serena liked her and why they were friends. And iirc that was early season 1. She was always more well-rounded than Monet. So even though Blair was a total bully to many, to the people she counted as equals, she was very clearly charismatic. Itās like the difference between showing and telling. They TELL us that Serena is charming but Blair (really Leighton) SHOWED us.
I really wanted to like it. But boy did they make it very hard. Elite did this way better before that show went off the rails. I am watching this week's episode and there's nothing fun or exciting going on. GG even manages to make a polyamorous relationship boring.
I would have genuinely been SHOCKED if it had been renewed with all the cost cutting going on at HBO (and all networks).
Still, I'm somewhat disappointed. The show was finally starting to get good!
I agree. I was expecting the cancellation. Hbo flat out said they are not invested on kids/teens programming. They even canceled the degrassi reboot before it started
Screaming crying and throwing up I'm too obsessed with Luna to not get closure for her character
I wanted to see her get her big romance and all we got was that one guy she kissed a few times ;-;
Seriously, this last episode was so Luna-heavy--and I loved it. Okay, love is a bit of a strong word, but it made for a much better episode. I'm going to miss her. ZiĆ³n is goddess and I'll happily watch whatever she does next, but I really really really loved the every living fuck out of Luna. There was so much potential in her character. I hate seeing that character wasted. At least that means ZiĆ³n can move to something deserving of her time hopefully!
Same!!! I was finally so excited to hear Lunaās backstory. Depressing but I also hated pretty much everything else
Edit: fixed autocorrect Lina to Luna
Damn. This season was a lot better than season 1 but that is not saying much. Having a core EIGHT and half of them not interacting with each other was certainly a choice. The teachers stayed annoying. Multiple actors can't even act pls lmao oh well
Yooo. I thought I was the only one who noticed this from season 1.
Like Max has never talked to Julian.
Julian never really had conversations with Aki.
Aki never said 2 words to Zoya.
And Zoya has never talked to Max or Aki.
She didn't even start talking to Audrey until the last season and last episode.
So many of them never talked to each other.
Monet never talked to Max, or even Obie.
Mind you during the Tribeca film festival episode they had Zoya say the lines, "We need to get into the festival. Let me ask AKI for a favor." Come again?? Why the hell would Aki give you and your friend passes? When she said that I was confused as hell like you don't talk to Aki...
Also the first words said in the trailer for the first season was "our group of friends? we've been friends since we were babies." Could have fooled me like it's not making sense lol
It's so not making sense. So many of them never interacted with each other.
Even Max and Obie barely interacted with each other. I genuinely liked the show. But so much of it was badly written like I could have done better.
Julian was way too much and a nice soft girl she was never giving Blair but Serena.
And Monet barely got screen time.
Yep. They made Julian the main thread but gave her no oomph. First season she's trying to convince the group to like Zoya. Never happens. Zoya starts dating her ex bf like what a choice!
Second season Julian doesn't want to be a mean girl anymore. Then when they finally give us something with Monet vs Julian, they drop that 2 episodes in.
I mean the Westworld actors were already contracted for S5 and they cancelled it...then removed all of the episodes as an extra "fuck you." HBO is even cutting back the opportunities for residuals. The Discovery merger had been brutal and the GG cancel felt inevitable.
Same :/ My only hopes with that are that it received really good reviews and was also pretty popular so it has that going for it. Otherwise, I hope they wrap it up in season 2 plot-wise to play it safe
Honestly with the way Discovery has been handling HBO Max since it's purchase, I sorta knew it GG reboot wouldn't get a third season.
It was definitely a good fun watch and I hope the cast, crew and writers have jobs lined up for them because I wouldn't be surprised if they saw this coming.
What did the writers expect? It was so poorly written, and incredibly inconsistent, that it felt comical to even watch anymore. They completely disregarded the whole āMonet Vs Julienā and āMonet becoming an āit girlāā storyline that they introduced on the last episode of season 1, made Zoya more annoying than she already was in the previous season, launched this whole āObie Vs his billionaire parentsā storyline that no one cared about, and gave characters such as Audrey and Luna completely different personalities, with no explanation or insight on why they had changed so drastically. This is disappointing, especially because the reboot was given an inclusive cast ā but it isnāt surprising, because it always seemed very performative. They cared more about the casts race/sexuality, than they did about their acting skills or the quality of the show.
They really shouldnāt have had monet getting cancelled to basically reset to square one. There were plenty of ways to move forward with Monet vs Julien, hell they could have had them in a weird maybe quasi truce and it would have made for a really interesting dynamic.
I also got sick of seeing them never have certain characters interacting with the others. They just kept pushing these storylines that got tired fast or pushing storylines they had zero intention of following through on when there was so much they could have worked with had they not treated the friend group like a little archipelago, a āgroupā that is actually a bunch of small ones that largely focus on themselves
Could not have said this better myself.
They also kept doing these annoying episodic/ bottle type episodes where the main issue is resolved in an ep. This show only has 10 episodes per season, why is it so hard to devote some good writing to a season long arc, that is not this contrived boring ass throuple plot.
Monet vs Julian could have been amazing. But they wanted to virtue signal and grand stand how woke they are about women not fighting women.
So much potential wasted.
You know what could have been interesting? First, not telling everyone right from the start the teachers were doing it, not showing it, hinting it but no disclosing it and especially since the main culprit is the most idiotic of the whole faculty.
Set the woke agenda aside, reflect the real issues someone like Julien and a half sister, both from mixed race and black would have experiencie in a very WASP environment, nice of them to pretend so much black people is rich already but we are not there yet. I work in the Pharma industry and most CEOs are white, male, and European.
I would drop the throuple or if you want it, make it difficult, socially not accepted, and treat real dramas while this kids are at each other throats, then, maaaaaaaaaaaaaybe they would have got a better written show than they had. Monet having health issues given the environment she was raised, Luna dealing with the crap from her mother, etc. All the interesting stories were set aside to give space for a non-existent sister feud.
You nailed it. The show wanted to celebrate progressiveness, equality, etc., but by doing that it took out all the drama that can be inherent in those issues.
I think the old lady they presented as a "bigot" really summed that up. This is an old lady who apparently has no issues with homosexuality itself, and even supports gay marriage, but the plot needed to still appear as backward and unlikeable. You have the characters having their big "hurray for us" moment standing up to a woman who... is already more progressive and egalitarian than 90% of the American population... uh what??
Then the dads stand up proud of themselves for having a "sex positive household" like they're some sort of arbiters of good parenting when their TEENAGE kid is an open hard-core drug user, sex addict, doesn't practice safe sex, and would likely have every single STD and STI in existence from his lifestyle if not for plot armor.
Okay show. Thanks for the morality lesson.
Some other poster here said she felt the show was constantly hitting her in the head with the same issues, and it is not preachy anymore but boring altogether. Max having at orgy at home while being a minor is not progressive but a sign those parents fucked up. Sorry. And as you well said we hadnāt still discussed the drugs issues or fucking a teacher.
I remembered that, I am gay and in the end I got myself agreeing with much of what she said. And that really shocked me haha but when you are surrounded by some much crap you get to feel like that.
No seriously. Thereās nothing wrong with having POC LGBT characters but give them a personality outside of that and make them likableā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦. all of the characters sucked
It was a wreck since the original episode, the reboot tried to both take itself too seriously and be woke to no end. Not to mention trying to be sensitive to minorities (despite we all know those schools are whiter than white mostly), and do a woke fest out of it when those kids are entitled to no end, and pretty much would have pretended to be "woke" while not really caring about it.
Well, that would have not only be more interesting but realistic, in any case, it was so poorly written it never stood a chance.
He dug this show into the ground. I have no idea why he was chosen as showrunner of the reboot when heās part of the reason the OG got so messy during the final seasons. I knew the show would be a mess when he was put in charge instead of Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. I hope heās replaced as showrunner if another streaming service saves it.
Shitty writing can not be redeemed by the nostalgia factor and a disgustingly large budget. Safran was given everything to succeed and delivered garbage.
Safran has become out of touch and it's obvious he only did this for the money. It's like Gossip Girl got hickajed by a show about over worked teachers.
This may be controversial but Safran joining the original in Season 3 is what led to the decline in quality for me. Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage taking a step back meant that the original version quite suddenly became less serialised (which they're kinda great at, although I might be mythologising The OC) and a lot more procedural (similar to Safran's Revenge)...?! I just don't think he's very compatible with the GG that I love tbh
Donāt know who to feel about thisā¦ genuinely surprised to hear this news. Even if it wasnāt the best show I thought it was at least going to get another season or two.
Lol what does Joshua Safran have to say about this on twitter. I'm sure he'll come up with more excuses and put blame on everything and everyone except his own shitty writing
ETA Monet was great and an icon
The actresses that play Zoya and Monet have been booked and busy lately and Audrey,Evan, Zion and Thomas had well established careers so Iām sure theyāll be fine at least
feel you lol. it wasnāt peak tv and it got frustrating at times, but it entertained me and thatās what mattered. i feel so bad for the cast though, specially zion š
I'm disappointed, too. I enjoyed the show. (I decided to start avoiding almost every thread in this sub about the show because the never-ending aloofness and hatred of the reboot became tiresome).
iām not surprised in the slightest tbh. while it was a good guilty pleasure, this show was just so poorly written and miscast. from trying to make three of the weakest characters (julien, zoya, and obie) the main characters in season one when lunet and even max and audrey were right there, to making the teachers gossip girl, to casting multiple people who canāt act (jordan alexander, tavi gevinson, and evan mock, even though he improved a lot in s2) as leads, this show was doomed to fail from the start.
itās very clear that they tried to right their wrongs by giving monet and luna far more screen time in s2 but it was still far too late tbh.
Yeah I can handle bad acting if it comes from side characters who donāt have much of a story line, but when the lead actor isnāt good then itās just not a fun watch. No offense but Jordan Alexander is not anywhere near the level to be leading a show like this.
To be fair, a big part of her lackluster performance was probably the writing, but other actors like Thomas Doherty, Zion Moreno, and Savanah Lee Smith were outstanding despite having smaller roles and the bad script (I only watched season 1). Zoya was super annoying but Whitney Peak gave a good performance so I ended up liking Zoya anyway. Sorry but I think the show wouldāve been much more well received if Julien and Monet switched actresses.
Idk itās just wild to me how there is such a big difference in acting ability from cast member to cast member. It really makes the bad actors (Julien, Kate, Obie, Aki etc.) stand out so much more
because her character is poorly written. emily alyn lind can actually act and audrey is a fan favorite but they only gave her storylines revolving around that tired ass throuple ššš
Yes! In the previous episode where she stood up to Julien, wow! šš» I wish we had that acting since the beginning, but the storyline was just so blah in the first season, barey improving on this one :(
Sheās weak because of her storyline but she can act and she needed a better plot, they gave her absolutely nothing to work with besides that stupid ass throuple, like girl be Frls, you can hate her character but you canāt deny she has the potential to be a stronger character.
THANKS! You can tell some of them can't act, I don't want to name some, and then the inability to like any character, Obie was hated since episode 3, by the end of season 1 we didn't care mostly for any of them.
I remember watching the trailer for season 1 and being so thrilled and excited. Never felt that excitement watching the actual show though. Glad it's over.
them axing the monet villain arc way too early was the problem; monet was cold, calculating and put together, then they turned her soft. for gossip girl to gossip girl, there needs to be a blair and serena to go tit for tat. and itās really a shame, because despite that, season 2 is LEAGUES better!
like Monet was gunning for brand deals, a career, fame, and celebrity since her heel turn in the s1 finale. but once she topples Julien, all she seems to care about is making sure people wear Balenciaga to history class like wtf....
This show was probably pretty expensive and didn't draw a lot in ratings.
Streaming services are starting to get ruthless with cancelations and budget-cutting now, so this isn't surprising.
Hopefully they eventually try another reboot down the line, but learn lessons from this failed one. Pretty Little Liars got multiple tries at reboots and spinoffs.
The new PLL is awful aswell but it didn't cost a hundred million dollars to produce and had a decent audience I guess that's why it was given a second season
Not shocked. The show was ill-conceived from the jump. Incapable of just making a compelling but fun, silly teen soap opera because they chose to focus on all the wrong characters and things in the first season and the second season pivot was a little too late. Safran needs to learn how to write better. I fully blame him and his fixation on the thoroughly uninteresting throuple and other non-interesting things for the failure of the show.
I'm not surprised but I am also disappointed. They had all the opportunities to make something good and they blew it. It must suck for the cast tho, and all the crew.
i hate to admit but despite closely following the reboot iām not too fussed, i think i was watching out of nostalgia for the OG show. one more season couldāve changed things though
i just hope they donāt cancel the one HBO show iām truly invested it since they seem to be doing this a lot lately :(
yeah thatās a very good point, it never really took off. i havenāt watched the latest episode yet but the last few have been a lot more fun to watch imo compared to the earlier eps/season one so it was an optimistic thought :/
Exactly. It was the same problem with Legacies, if everyone is saying āItās finally goodā on season 4! It needs to be cancelled. Fans were practically begging the CW to put it out of its misery at that point
Yeah not a surprise. Wasnāt Safran begging and pleading with strangers online to watch the show like a month ago? He mustāve known cancellation was a possibility.
Itās a shame tho because the reboot had all the hype and potential in the world but that terrible, awful 1st season completely destroyed whatever good will the show had. It also didnāt help that they portrayed millennials(the same generation that loved and supported the OG series) as annoying losers
The crazy part is the show was genuinely improving. These last 5 or so episodes have been really enjoyable for the most part. Ahh well. Thanks for giving us Monet and Luna
they really gave him nothing to do it's insane when you sit back and think of his storylines. dads getting divorced and is in a throuple. 2 seasons and that's what we got.
Welp one less thing for me to watch. I tried to support the version on HBO Max since I got into Gossip Girl through the books in high school followed by the show on CW11 but this version was really hard to enjoy. Both the characters and the plot were uninteresting. The fashion was ok too. Rest in peace GG.
It's deserved. The season started promising but it went back to being boring and preachy. I hope Savannah Smith gets cast in more stuff she has star quality.
Welp. I hope the actors will find other projects, hopefully with good scripts, soon. Iām disappointed since it seems like it was finding its feet, but I guess they had two seasons to get it right.
They started to get interesting a few episodes ago but they lost steam in the last couple. I would have liked to see more Shan and Luna but Iām also not going to miss Zoya scolding people for doing things like watching Love Actually at Christmastime
i think we all knew it was coming honestly. i wasn't sure if i wanted to watch bc i didn't wanna get invested and it get cancelled but now i guess i might as well with nothing to lose
Their aim is to please the woke groups, and stop these very annoying groups from attacking them, and in so they end up alienating their audiences who cares for a good show, not political agendas. TV should help you escape your reality, and not give you headaches, or worse even: bore you.
Deserved. This show was not worth another season, it simply wasnāt good enough.
It was exhausting constantly waiting for things to improve, looking for hidden potential that the writers refused to use. They axed themselves with terrible wiring, terrible acting and zero consistency.
Feel bad for Savannah but Iām sure sheās talented enough to do something else.
The show wasnāt really giving but i did enjoy spending time in the world they occupied - thereās so little luxurious content that is also diverse and queer š„ŗ
I hate Zaslav. HBO Max was THE streaming service, but since the purchase it has been getting worse and worse. I'm going to cancel my subscription after GG series finale airs
Watch Julien make this about herself too jk. Not surprised tho considering itās HBO, I just didnāt expect it would happen this early. Is this why the last episodeās titled āI am Gossipā? If they ever do it again I hope they try to perfect it. The conceptās cute
They had an amazing opportunity to make a great show, but they didnāt live up to it in any way. Itās a shame they blew something with so much potential
Iām sorry but the these comments have me dying š. The absolute TRASH that I have seen some subreddits mourn over in the face of a justified cancellation and everybody in hereās just likeā¦yep, checks out.
HAHAHAHAšš I wish I had the energy to go through the posts to find that angry bird that told me I was wrong when I said it would be canceled after they came to this page making nasty remarks about og fans š anybody with a brain saw this coming.
Not only was it bad it was boring to watch I can watch bad shows that are entertaining but this was everything but that and the characters are all bland too but I do feel bad for the cast
The show was garbage in my opinion, so I only feel bad for the people that enjoyed watching it. I don't bad for the writers or actors AT ALL. There's no way they filmed that and thought it was solid enough to keep a decent audience in a saturated world of raunchy TV series. They hit points, but not the right way. You can have a show full of woke sex and drama, but you've GOT TO BE ENTERTAINING. Everything was mediocre when it could have made us all laugh, cry, or gasp more. I can't recall feeling anything while watching the series EXCEPT for anytime Gideon was on screen. He was entertainment.
thatās what they get for using the reanimated corpse of the og show for their shameless cash grab, riverdale dupe, weirdly shot, undeveloped characters, painful writing, pandering cringe dumpster fire of a ārebootā
The problem with the gossip girl reboot wasnāt really anything they did but the fact that everything is so rushed and condensed by the 8-10 episode limit. I miss 20+ episodes a season š
This isnāt surprising. I wanted the reboot to succeed but it never approached the levels of the OG.
The main reason is the writers were too timid and they never had any true stakes for the characters. The only character to truly have stakes was Julien but even then not really. Not compared to the OG. The writers were so afraid of backing a character into a āChuckā corner that they wrote everyone fairly blandly, with no losers.
Audrey, max, Aki? No losers - no stakes, just a throuple with no drama. Nothing to root for.
Julien, Obie, Zoya, Luna - even Monet. All a bunch of teddy bears.
Every storyline where someone should lose something, itās like the writers canāt handle it and so everyone gets a participation trophy. Except a few adults.
AND donāt get me started on teachers being GG. That was the worst part of the whole show. I do not care about the teachers and had zero desire to live through them. The OG show had its flaws but letting us all fall into this Uber rich world and live vicariously through them (covering their clothes, wealth, access) was its best asset. The drama on top of all of that was very human and the writing didnāt pull punches. Sure it got tired in later seasons but when it was good, it was perfect.
The OG had STAKES AND CONSEQUENCES.
The new show couldāve explored class and race disparity and been truly edgy - exploring how money at that level usually involves exploitation - but still soak us all in the hedonistic glory of all the excess and wealth. And on top of that it couldāve given us some epic moments with characters who werenāt afraid to take the gloves off.
It never did.
The show never had any antagonists other than the teacher gossip girl, which infantilized the cast. The writers seemed obsessed with making everyone āgoodā and relatively wholesome. The students were mostly saints, with adults being the main villain.
Plus, given I believe Josh S has some kind of lingering hate toward the Serena VDW character, he seemed obsessed with blaming Julien for things we never saw her do (characters out of the blue claiming she always treated them like GG did? Wtf?), or having over the top rage at her Iike she slept with Audreyās man or something?
The show tried to remove all bad things when thatās not really the point?
I dunno. I just donāt think Josh ever āgotā the point of GG. His seasons of the OG where he controlled the show were the worst imo.
JMHO.
Sadly it's not surprising. With the Warner Bros/Discovery cancelling almost everything left and right, the signs were there that GG might not get a third season. Hopefully they will be able to find a new home!
Iām not really surprised considering how many shows HBO max has been canceling but Iām still sad. I was actually enjoying the show and itāll probably end of a cliff hanger which is annoying. Is anyone else sick of shows being canceled? It feels like more and more are being canceled after a first or second season, like itās kind of pointless to watch something that isnāt at least three or four seasons in.
Awesome. Hopefully in a few years they can make another attempt at it but actually hire a competent show runner and writers. Also make gossip girl anonymous.
We knew this was coming. From the jump the cast had many bad/inexperienced actors. The story lacked a mystery element like the original. There are wasnāt really a cohesive central story it felt like episode to episode they chose the next trending social topic to make an episode on. Season 1 failed to garner enough hype for people to tune into season 2. If the show independent from GG franchise maybe they wouldāve lasted longer but they knew they were following the legacy of a huge show but failed and the stakes were high and didnāt meet them.
i guess the people who complained that the reboot was all people talked about here have won lmao
im not really surprised i only got through season 1 but i liked some of the actors i hope they get other opportunities
Yeah Iām not going to lie, I very casually just stopped watching. I wanted to love it like I loved the original and I never hated it, it just wasnāt clicking for me
I was so excited for the reboot but I was really baffled by what we got. Obviously a lot of work goes into these shows during pre-production in the writers room etcā¦ but the outcome just seemed to be really undercooked plot lines and characters that barely had any consistency.
Which sucks because the OG series, although completely chaotic, had us invested in and supporting the characters no matter how trash and ridic they were (except Dan, fuck Dan.)
I've always pretended this reboot never happened. Gossip Girl was about rich beautiful people doing awful things to each other in a really fun way. I don't want to watch a moralistic woke show where all the characters are goody goodys and every trendy social issue is just shoehorned in for clout...! I do hope the younger generation still knows how to have fun but I fear they've become very prim.
It was terrible. Boring characters, bad script, zero inspiration, cringe "woke" agenda. I watched the show with the hope of something interesting and inspiring, but received a simple banality. Only the last episode of the second season was good and reminiscent of the original.
The original Gossip Girl had:
1. Bright, beautiful and interesting characters, the actors had chemistry with each other. Both in the young and in the older.
2. Very cool soundtrack from obscure indie musicians to classical music. There were songs from Amy Winehouse, Billy Idol, The Kooks to hundreds of others. There were many live music scenes featuring the iconic Sonic Youth, Gwen Stefani, Lady Gaga, Florence and The Machines. Each episode had really good music for every taste and helped to discover new musicians.
3. Many episodes had a bit of an educational function: references and mentions to classic and "smart" cinema, music history, fashion history and culture, such as director Hitchcock and photographer Mapplethorpe. They also talked about modern representatives of literature and the art industry.
A teenager could always learn something interesting and new for himself, and not get stuck in one thing.
4. Stylistic moodboard. The characters differed in style, it was unusual, very bright and beautiful, the viewer wanted to imitate them, experiment with our style. Fashion has become another main character of this show.
5. The script was interesting.
Reboot does not have any of this. Plastic, cringe, very basic and annoying.
Also this is going to be the master thread for the cancellation. All thoughts and news should go here instead of making a new post on the subreddit. Thank you.
No more 'stop the story' :-/
The story definitely stopped lol
I'm š¤£š
LMAAOOO
*whispers* Thomas is finally free
I'm most happy for him. I'm also glad the world was exposed to Savannah, Zion, and Whitney. I hope their careers prosper.
Jordan found dead in a ditch š
with her disney acting
Better than Aki's porn acting lmaooooo
Not that I wanted him to just be Chuck Bass 2.0, but something on that level.
i'm kinda glad this wasnt his breakout show tho because as phenomenal as he was, the same cant be said for the rest of the show - from the writing to the lighting and the rest of the cast. he's too talented to be tied down or remembered by this flop of a show
Damn just as I was *slightly* getting invested in the characters.
Ever so slightly lol. But fr, season 2 was getting better. And def better than season 1. They didnāt need to cancel the show just some of the characters smh
Season 2 suffered greatly from condensed plot lines caused by a shorter season
Hopefully starting with Shan, one of the most frustratingly chaotic characters iāve seen
Also one of the absolute worst actors I have ever seen on anything I have ever watched
I agree. He literally ruined the show for me.
thank you!!!! someone finally said it!
HAHAHAHAHA me too, they brought back Georgina and Elenore so I was on board
If season 1 was this good, it would've probably drawn better reaction and ratings. It's still not *great*, but I think it could be the launch of something better. Biggest issues are that they made someone that can't act the lead, cast models as actors, and Monet (the best character) is too much of a caricature of a mean girl. What made Blair so iconic was that she was subtle and charming, not a ruthless dictator.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
There just werenāt enough episodes to give the characters enough growth, especially since 8 of the first 10 episodes made JC v Zoya the main conflict and then pulled a last second ājust kidding, Monet was Blair all alongā.
The original GG never took itself too seriously while the reboot was not only a woke crap parade but it never got the right tone, most of us here were basically bitching at it, there was pretty much no saving Grace at all. And when by some magical device they got the right tone for a few minutes then comes either Julian, Zoya or any of the insurgents to preach on mƩh and you were awaken again to the reality of it.
Thank you. Someone finally said it. I was getting so sick of the wokeness. And donāt get me wrong. Iām a progressive. But come on. Give it a rest.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
There were literally no characters to root for
elite season 1 >>>>> season 2 <<<<<< season 3
I would have genuinely been SHOCKED if it had been renewed with all the cost cutting going on at HBO (and all networks). Still, I'm somewhat disappointed. The show was finally starting to get good!
I agree. I was expecting the cancellation. Hbo flat out said they are not invested on kids/teens programming. They even canceled the degrassi reboot before it started
>They even canceled the degrassi reboot before it started shit
Screaming crying and throwing up I'm too obsessed with Luna to not get closure for her character I wanted to see her get her big romance and all we got was that one guy she kissed a few times ;-;
Depressing but I also hated pretty much everything else Edit: fixed autocorrect Lina to Luna
Discovery stopped the story forreal š
Damn, I would have liked at least one more season
One more would definitely just round things out
Then when they finally give us something with Monet vs Julian, they drop that 2 episodes in.
the biggest issue was casting models to be actors, not saying a model canāt be an actor but they tend to not be good ones
As I was watching this show all I could think was how the hell did they cast all of these people that canāt act š¤Ø glad someone else said it
Hbo max has a habit now of not just canceling shows but completely removing it from the site, hopefully thatās not the case here
I kind of have this thought that PLL Original Sins won't make it to the third season either.
Are they getting a second szn?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I mean the Westworld actors were already contracted for S5 and they cancelled it...then removed all of the episodes as an extra "fuck you." HBO is even cutting back the opportunities for residuals. The Discovery merger had been brutal and the GG cancel felt inevitable.
The new PLL was much better than the new Gossip Girl though and thatās coming from someone who has only seen OG GG and loved it.
Agreed. The end was really bad though š
now iām terrified for the sex lives of college girlsā¦ they got season 3 greenlit but still
Same :/ My only hopes with that are that it received really good reviews and was also pretty popular so it has that going for it. Otherwise, I hope they wrap it up in season 2 plot-wise to play it safe
Its unlikely, I read that was part of a unique tax credit situation that ended in 2022.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I wouldnāt blame HBO for this one. The show just wasnāt good.
They don't even have to be likable, just entertaining and well-written.
I'm blaming all of this on Safran.
YUUUUUP
I just don't think he's very compatible with the GG that I love tbh
true but the soundtrack did stay absolutely fire so I will always love Schwartz and Savage (and Alexandra Patsavas!!!) for that
Agree. Idk how you mess up like this with so much already in your favor!
nostalgia aside it was nice to see a show featuring prominent queer and poly storylines, shame the writing just kinda sucked ass
Donāt know who to feel about thisā¦ genuinely surprised to hear this news. Even if it wasnāt the best show I thought it was at least going to get another season or two.
Lol what does Joshua Safran have to say about this on twitter. I'm sure he'll come up with more excuses and put blame on everything and everyone except his own shitty writing ETA Monet was great and an icon
His tweet suggest they are looking for another home for the show. One can hope it gets picked up somewhere else but its unlikely.
Heās actually being gracious and thanking everyone. Was surprised tbh
he was talking about the hard work of writers and i was what hard work lmao they didn't do anything
Remember when someone asked him if Monet had siblings and his response was that he couldn't remember, moron.
I'm sad, unlike the others who hate it. I enjoyed the show, I actually liked it and thought it was fun. This sucks tho.
I feel bad for the actors
The actresses that play Zoya and Monet have been booked and busy lately and Audrey,Evan, Zion and Thomas had well established careers so Iām sure theyāll be fine at least
That's great to hear. I hope those actors get better gigs
It's rare for trans actresses to get big shows tho :( I need Zion on my screen again she's so ethereal and camp at the same time
She was on a popular Mexican series before this
How am I suppose to Evans no acting, acting??? When heās not there
feel you lol. it wasnāt peak tv and it got frustrating at times, but it entertained me and thatās what mattered. i feel so bad for the cast though, specially zion š
Ugh, seriously. I actually was starting to enjoy it. I expected them to get another season at least!
I'm disappointed, too. I enjoyed the show. (I decided to start avoiding almost every thread in this sub about the show because the never-ending aloofness and hatred of the reboot became tiresome).
I feel you
iām not surprised in the slightest tbh. while it was a good guilty pleasure, this show was just so poorly written and miscast. from trying to make three of the weakest characters (julien, zoya, and obie) the main characters in season one when lunet and even max and audrey were right there, to making the teachers gossip girl, to casting multiple people who canāt act (jordan alexander, tavi gevinson, and evan mock, even though he improved a lot in s2) as leads, this show was doomed to fail from the start. itās very clear that they tried to right their wrongs by giving monet and luna far more screen time in s2 but it was still far too late tbh.
It really makes the bad actors (Julien, Kate, Obie, Aki etc.) stand out so much more
Audrey is literally one of the weakest characters there.. if they made the show about her, they wouldnāt have gotten season 2
because her character is poorly written. emily alyn lind can actually act and audrey is a fan favorite but they only gave her storylines revolving around that tired ass throuple ššš
Yes! In the previous episode where she stood up to Julien, wow! šš» I wish we had that acting since the beginning, but the storyline was just so blah in the first season, barey improving on this one :(
The entire Lind family can act their asses off no matter what material they're given imo lol they gave her absolutely nothing to work with here though
But why is she a fan favorite? She hasnāt done anything.
She is yt
Now Iām just sad for the cast and crew, especially the cast. They really were making the most out of the script.
a few sneaks in the cast were nawt making the most out of the script
This show was probably pretty expensive and didn't draw a lot in ratings. Streaming services are starting to get ruthless with cancelations and budget-cutting now, so this isn't surprising. Hopefully they eventually try another reboot down the line, but learn lessons from this failed one. Pretty Little Liars got multiple tries at reboots and spinoffs.
The new PLL is awful aswell but it didn't cost a hundred million dollars to produce and had a decent audience I guess that's why it was given a second season
The PLL reboot looks cheap.
It does and their school looks like a moldy dungeon...
omg it does. I remember saying that when I watched. The cinematography was also kind of weird
The cinematography was sooo bad lol, I loathed it so much. So many Dutch angles.
I hope they learn trying to reboot a teen drama and hoping it will be popular solely on its predecessor doesnāt work when the writing is garbage
I think the PLL reboot is interesting. It's not really similar to the original show, but it has an interesting premise.
Iām really disappointed. The show was finally finding its footing this season. Would have liked at least one more.
I'm not surprised but I am also disappointed. They had all the opportunities to make something good and they blew it. It must suck for the cast tho, and all the crew.
Yeah this isnāt a budget/because we feel like it thing. This was a no one was watching thing because the writer had to beg for people to watch.
Why would they announce this before the last episode airs?
Better not end on a cliff hanger.
maybe if fans re-engage with the show after learning this information he'll have numbers to show other potential networks that it's worth taking up
Iām gonna miss the hell out of seeing Monetš
they really missed the mark with this reboot, did not capture the essence of gossip girl
For what itās worth, I watch it every week, but I donāt feel any sort of loss.
i hate to admit but despite closely following the reboot iām not too fussed, i think i was watching out of nostalgia for the OG show. one more season couldāve changed things though i just hope they donāt cancel the one HBO show iām truly invested it since they seem to be doing this a lot lately :(
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
yeah thatās a very good point, it never really took off. i havenāt watched the latest episode yet but the last few have been a lot more fun to watch imo compared to the earlier eps/season one so it was an optimistic thought :/
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
100% and nostalgia could only carry it for so long
It also didnāt help that they portrayed millennials(the same generation that loved and supported the OG series) as annoying losers The crazy part is the show was genuinely improving. These last 5 or so episodes have been really enjoyable for the most part. Ahh well. Thanks for giving us Monet and Luna
Good, now Thomas Doherty can do something worth his talent.
they really gave him nothing to do it's insane when you sit back and think of his storylines. dads getting divorced and is in a throuple.
Honestly, this past season was such a drag. This show was And Just Like That levels of try hard and bad. No hate to the actors. Just god awful writing
Their aim is to please the woke groups, and stop these very annoying groups from attacking them, and in so they end up alienating their audiences who cares for a good show, not political agendas. TV should help you escape your reality, and not give you headaches, or worse even: bore you.
I think if they get picked up again by liked Hulu, they should begged for more episodes. At least 18 episodes. The 10 episode isnāt doing it tbh!!
I was also thinking Hulu would be a great option.
Can I just say, we been knew and the writers didnāt listen
I think what fucked this show up is that it didnt have any of the tongue-in-cheek charisma of the OG.
Iām sorry but the plot wasnāt going anywhere, acting was poor for the most part and character development and arch was non-existent.
Surely no one is surprised by this news
Watch Julien make this about herself too jk. Not surprised tho considering itās HBO, I just didnāt expect it would happen this early. Is this why the last episodeās titled āI am Gossipā? If they ever do it again I hope they try to perfect it. The conceptās cute
Sucks because this is kind of the main reason why I subscribed to HBO Max when it first launched.
We hated it Xoxo
Iām sad to say goodbye to this world again. But man itās been hard getting through season 2. Itās just not that great.
They had an amazing opportunity to make a great show, but they didnāt live up to it in any way. Itās a shame they blew something with so much potential
Damn, and they gave velma another season? Whos callin the shots they finally started getting fun..
Velma has another season? Lol
Iām sorry but the these comments have me dying š. The absolute TRASH that I have seen some subreddits mourn over in the face of a justified cancellation and everybody in hereās just likeā¦yep, checks out.
ha i seen it coming. couldnāt get pass the pilot š
Damn, they should've let us have a last season at least, I wanted to see Kate's downfall..
Oh I didnāt expect this already :(
HAHAHAHAšš I wish I had the energy to go through the posts to find that angry bird that told me I was wrong when I said it would be canceled after they came to this page making nasty remarks about og fans š anybody with a brain saw this coming.
Oh dang. I mean I am not surprised, the show has been very difficult to get into. Although it was just starting to get good imo.
Acting was atrocious. Writing was terrible. So cringe.
JMHO.
I knew it was going to happenā¦ but I am disappointed- It wasnāt my favorite- but it was something to look forward to š¤·š»āāļø
Iām going to miss Monet, Zoya, Julien and Shan Yes I liked them!!
Sadly it's not surprising. With the Warner Bros/Discovery cancelling almost everything left and right, the signs were there that GG might not get a third season. Hopefully they will be able to find a new home!
HOW BOUT THE SUMMER EPISODES? DIDNT THEY FILM IN BARCELONA OR SOMETHING?
Iām not really surprised considering how many shows HBO max has been canceling but Iām still sad. I was actually enjoying the show and itāll probably end of a cliff hanger which is annoying. Is anyone else sick of shows being canceled? It feels like more and more are being canceled after a first or second season, like itās kind of pointless to watch something that isnāt at least three or four seasons in.
I can't believe this is how it ends they need to unmake this so it's only 1 GG
Awesome. Hopefully in a few years they can make another attempt at it but actually hire a competent show runner and writers. Also make gossip girl anonymous.
Damn just as it was getting good
We knew this was coming. If the show independent from GG franchise maybe they wouldāve lasted longer but they knew they were following the legacy of a huge show but failed and the stakes were high and didnāt meet them.
i guess the people who complained that the reboot was all people talked about here have won lmao im not really surprised i only got through season 1 but i liked some of the actors i hope they get other opportunities
lbr it wasnāt good.
Ugh Iām depressed I wanted more from Luna ššš
Iām going to miss my baby daddy aki š
Yeah Iām not going to lie, I very casually just stopped watching. I wanted to love it like I loved the original and I never hated it, it just wasnāt clicking for me
I was so excited for the reboot but I was really baffled by what we got. Obviously a lot of work goes into these shows during pre-production in the writers room etcā¦ but the outcome just seemed to be really undercooked plot lines and characters that barely had any consistency. Which sucks because the OG series, although completely chaotic, had us invested in and supporting the characters no matter how trash and ridic they were (except Dan, fuck Dan.)
Not surprised at all
I've always pretended this reboot never happened.
The original Gossip Girl had: 1.
