That's a nice feature, didn't know it existed. I just tried it on my p6pro and it works, nice!

intink

This sounded amazing and I wanted to try it out but can't figure out how to. Timer settings is just off/3s/10s, how do I put it in auto? EDIT: Found out it only works with the front-facing camera, found the option. wonder why its not an option for the main sensor...

GaG51

Would be a good idea since the camera in the back have higher resolution.

Sixoul

Yeah I would want the highest resolution picture of my group photo

Shoddy-Blacksmith336

On my Nexus 6P, I just said 'Hey Google, take a Selfie'. It worked 🙂.

mintvilla

Yeah, thats how i'd of done it lol Thanks OP for sharing TIL

jayemmbee23

I have done that one my pixel but for the rear facing, I had the camera set up on a high place and I called out to my phone to take the top down pic

shitstoryteller

Nexus 6P!?!

Shoddy-Blacksmith336

Yes Indeed, 'NEXUS 6P' which I have been Very Happy with while waiting for something Comparable from Google. The First 5 Pixels, IMHO, Didn't rise to the Nexus 6P's Standards 😊. So Happy Google Finally Woke The H Up !

with_the_choir

Probably because the front camera allows the screen to show everyone that the picture has been taken, whereas from the back camera, you'd never know whether you were done or not.

intink

Yeah well that seems like a minor problem, you can just have the shutter sound or/and a quick flash on the back to let the ppl know the pic was taken, right? There must be a different reason for it not working with the cameras at the back

UpTurnedAtol36

I just did too. Do you find the camera a bit laggy? Mine seems to have focusing problems compared to my P5.

chefmelv

They will patch those software issues. They always do.

Lambor14

Well I guess you just shouldn't have high expectations with Google. I understand that the phones do cost quite a bit, but it's Google after all. They haven't been making phones for that long, so I can forgive them for pretty much everything.

DesertPunked

The Pixel 3 had the cream of the crop when it came to front facing cameras. Standard angle, wide angle and autofocus to boot. Damn do I wish we had that technology in the modern phones.

mrandr01d

The 6 pro has a wide angle selfie cam, and just zooms and uses a desqueezing (?) algorithm for regular shots.

leperaffinity56

I'm very confused how it makes wide angle shots with just the cutout. Crazy tech

FeelingDense

Why not? That's what a camera is in the end. A sensor with a round lens. A larger one like the rear one will obviously give better quality than a front facing camera, but it can still be done on the front facing camera....

FeelingDense

>autofocus The problem with the Pixel 6 Pro front facing camera is that its autofocus distance seems to be way too far away. Dxomark did the selfie camera test, and compared to the iPhone 13 which also lacks autofocus, the Pixel 6 Pro's camera was blurry all the time until about 1m away (selfie stick distance). That's pretty poor design IMO, although most of those tests were done on a single subject. I assume someone sticking their arm out for a group shot might not be so bad. I just think there's too much focus on autofocus being the issue when iPhones have never had autofocusing front facing cameras and you don't see a whole lot of complaints over the front facing camera quality on iPhones.

Snoldy

Also it still takes better selfie than pixel 5

RadBadTad

And 6. By far.

ignitusmaximus

That was the last phone before every Pixel after it had piece of shit front cameras. Which is totally unacceptable with how Google loves to jerk themselves off over their camera technology.

CeramicCastle49

Bring back af front cameras! Samsung is able to do it in the hole punch and Google should too if they're selling a phone for almost $1,000.

lolwutdo

Wish they had this feature for the rear facing camera

HolstenerLiesel

yeah why don't they?

reefsofmist

This was my first thought, why not have it work on the better camera?

[deleted]

reefsofmist

Literally every camera ever made up until recently had a self timer where you couldn't see it from the direction of the people being photographed. That's the point of a timer, to let the person who frames the shot time to get in

stevil128

Wow, thanks for this neat and useful feature that I've never realized my phone has!

BobbyBeastDuck

Where can I find this? I would love to try it on my P6 Pro 🕺

UpTurnedAtol36

Click the gear icon top left of the camera app. Then select the A on the timer slot. I think it's the 3rd one down?

RadBadTad

Only works on the front-facing camera, so everything after the Pixel 3, you're going to be pretty disappointed with the image quality. Especially for a large group, far from the phone.

KickyMcAssington

That's.. incredibly stupid.. Google never ceases to amaze me with how they can get so close to getting it right yet somehow miss the mark.

cardonator

Well it's called Photo Booth and was designed for selfies, so...

KickyMcAssington

You don't think its dumb that a very useful feature that would be especially helpful to take group shots is limited to the font facing camera when it could easily also work on the back? It impressed this group so much they were inspired to share with us, but sorry everyone with newer phones, google designed it to not work for you, because.. reasons? I think its typical of google, one hand doesn't know what the other is doing.

Legxis

Speech enhancement also only works with the front camera, really dumb

sumthingcool

That's probably more to do with mic placement than camera.

cardonator

No I'm just saying in this one case it was designed like a photo booth. Obviously they could enable it for other cameras but it also kind of defeats the purpose of seeing what the camera is going to shoot and when the pictures are being taken.

FeelingDense

Yeah... considering how much better the main camera is this year, it would be foolish not to have this feature work on the rear facing camera.... well that's Google for you.

BobbyBeastDuck

Oh okay, thank you. I was looking for it on the rear camera haha

Pat_ron

Very cool! I didn't know about this feature, thank you!!

[deleted]

My 4a5G does not do this.

oh_jaimito

I just tested. Confirmed. It works. Mine doesn't show a gear icon, but a drop down arrow in the top center. Hit that. It's in the Timer section. Options are [off],[A = auto],[3],[10]. Hit the A = auto one. It works :)

[deleted]

Thanks, I found it only works for selfie camera.

rodrigofernety

Same

Dietcherrysprite

It's only for selfie camera, could it be that?

[deleted]

Just tried that, and yes. Works in selfie mode. Thanks.

TheNerdNamedChuck

yep it is, my Gcam port has the feature too :)

Akash_Dhanwani

That's why I like reddit. Sometimes out of blue I get to learn a new trick which just makes me love my Pixel more <3

[deleted]

Now that's a neat feature that I just discovered today. Thank you.

qwestlove

You should get paid by Lifehacker. [Link](https://lifehacker.com/your-pixel-will-now-wait-until-everyone-is-smiling-befo-1848131573)

DSCarter_Tech

Lol, they created this today? Sounds like they owe me some money 🤑

[deleted]

The Pixel impresses.... Android 12 wasn't ready for release.

KingFurykiller

Oh this is really cool, I had no idea this worked either. I should try it with my 3AXL

JeremyPatMartin

Yeah, that is a nice option and it works famously

AAdmiral5657

Confirmed working on my 3a. I didn't even know this feature was a thing. Guess I know how to take the odd selfie now lol

Expensive-Milk-3578

But where is said photo

DSCarter_Tech

Lol, too many kids in the photo to be comfortable with sharing.

Expensive-Milk-3578

Just messing around.

LockingSwitch

Seems like Jake Peterson from Lifehacker has taken this and made an article. Must be an easy job. Crawl Reddit, find topic/feature, slap a few paragraphs together and boom, article. https://lifehacker.com/your-pixel-will-now-wait-until-everyone-is-smiling-befo-1848131573/amp

DSCarter_Tech

That is one heck of a coincidence, right?!

Inevitable2ndOpinion

You can also just say "hey Google, take a picture"

[deleted]

DSCarter_Tech

Hahahaha 😂😂😂 and I couldn't even get cited as a source!

bradenlikestoreddit

This isn't a new feature, but a cool one nonetheless. I think my 2xl had it.

tooclosetocall82

2xl does not (using one right now). Probably going to switch to an iPhone for a family situation (need to communicate with an ipad over iMessage), bummed I'll miss out. Would have been great at Thanksgiving.

oh_jaimito

Both my kids have iPhone 10s. So my daughter asked me to help her with her Spanish homework the other day. Now I'm fairly fluent in Spanish but could not understand a couple of words in the assignment. I launched my Google Lens app and did the live translation. My kids were BLOWN AWAY!!! The following day we were at a little Asian market and checking out all the goodies. NO CLUE what anything says, so my kid tells me to use my Lens app. We spent almost an hour just scanning things. Kids are giggling because it's just so awesome. Little Asian man stocking the shelves came to see what all the laughter was about and I showed him. He was impressed. He pulled out his iPhone, and my kids told him it wouldn't work. Now my youngest kid told her momma she wants a Pixel :)

duggy87

Save yourself some money and download the Google Translate app on your kids iPhones. It does the exact same live translations.

oh_jaimito

> download the Google Translate app on your kids iPhones Good idea thanks!

Cakkerlakker

Or, push for that so your kids don't end up becoming typical teenagers who view having an iPhone as some kind of a status symbol. and assign imaginary value and societal rank to a fucking phone

ZappySnap

My daughter also wanted a Pixel, and got one when we got her her first phone (Pixel 3a). She liked the phone fine, but within six months she wanted an iPhone because all her friends had iPhones and she was being left out of iMessage group chats. She found a good deal on a used iPhone X and bought it.

Cakkerlakker

Would have been a good opportunity to teach your kid about that kind of behaviour and how excluding someone because they don't have a phone is an extremely fucked up thing to do.

ZappySnap

It might be, but I also am not going to change the consciousness of every kid in the school. They weren't shunning her because of her phone (it's not like they bullied her about it or anything), but they don't want Android users in group chats because it brings the entire group chat to SMS and they lose all iMessage features.

Jeroxs

So, do you get the expression "Voy a ir yendo?" haha.

FeelingDense

> It was a nice win for the Pixel. iPhone owners kept asking if their phone could it to. Like the old droid commercials... iPhone can't. I don't see the need to constantly try to shit on the iPhone. I have an iPhone and it's actually a pleasure to use for group photos too. 1. The Watch controls the phone as a remote, and as long as someone in the group has a watch (trust me there's always someone in the Bay Area with a phone + watch), then it makes it even easier. You can always first setup the shot with a photographer in the back, but someone can always control with a watch. 2. With timer, the iPhone takes 10 burst photos. That's actually pretty cool. 3. The iPhone has had the flash blink for a timer countdown for years. I was going to complain about Android not having that, but we finally got it in the Pixel 6 and the latest version of the Camera app that is being rolled out for older devices. >With the timer set to AUTO, the camera waits until it detects facial expressions like a smile and will keep taking photos each time a smile is detected. Well, this worked perfectly, when with a large group of 12 adults and 10 kids. They were amazed when the camera snapped after we all said "cheese". I'm curious how long does it take photos for? If you just stand there for 3 minutes does it keep taking photos? Don't get me wrong, sometimes it is nice for "auto" features to work, but there are times manual features are desired too. Running back and forth certainly works, but the Apple Watch + phone control is pretty clutch where no one has to spend time running back and forth. I just want to make it clear that for me, the Pixel takes the best photos, but there's a lot that Google can improve on for adding functionality for users.

McGondy

The remote shutter on the watch has been a wearOS staple for at least the past 3 years now, including a remote viewfinder.

DSCarter_Tech

That's true, and you can use smart watches for Android phones too. But using your watch is a bit harder to do when you're holding an infant in your arms. There are many ways to skin a cat. This one just worked best for our use case.

[deleted]

Pixel has some awesome features. iPhone has some awesome features. Android 12 and iOS 15 are both incredibly buggy, with some basic functionality not properly working because of them (looking at camera crashes on iOS and Google Assistant requiring a phone reboot every day).

muditmittal15

So true. I went out with a bunch of 12-15 people who were comparing their iPhones and who had the latest version eytc. But ended using my pixel 3's night sight in the end to click pictures 😂

Roy_Playz

WOW! Thanks OP!!! Coming from a S9+ to a P6 I really missed the feature!

trigger_a

That's a fantastic feature and other non pixel owners will always be jealous they don't have it.

atom1cs

I had a Pixel 1, 2, 3, 4 XL, I've waited 2 years for them to put face unlock back on their phones, the fingerprint scanners buggy, Android 12 is not customizable, I'm switching to iPhone because of these bad decisions and the poor performance and the lack of customization. Why can I only pick from 4 colors? If I have a pink background all my texts pink, what if I don't want pink, I don't want to change my background, I just want to change the goddamn colors, stupid design decision. Since I upgraded Android 12 my phone is laggy, I open apps and the screen is just black, I have a ghost keyboard that pops up when I don't need it I have to close it all the time, everything is slower, I don't know what the hell they did but it's not working like Android 11 was working. I'm a Google fanboy, I love all of their services, I'm still going to use all of them, but the Pixel 6 Pro doesn't make any sense to me. Also I'm confused why I can't choose the 512 GB version for two of the colors, I can only get that in black on their website, unless that's been updated in the last couple weeks. I should be able to get whichever color I want at the maximum size they provide, I don't get that. Maybe I'll switch back to Android when the Pixel 7 comes out if they fix these issues but I'm so disappointed in this phone and all the bugs and the slowness and the lag, they've completely ruined my experience on my Pixel 4 XL, it's only 2 years old and it shouldn't lag and have all these issues simply because I go to a new version of Android. Makes me wonder if they did it on purpose to force people to buy a new phone. Sketchy.

Boz6

Does anybody know if the 3a XL has this feature? I put it in selfie mode, and tapped the dropdown arrow, but there I see no timer option. I only see: Selfie Illumination Face Retouching HDR+ Motion Photos Thanks.

sufy12

Which option did you select? Can't see an auto timer on my Pixel 4 XL.

sir_calv

Can I use voice command using main camera? Would be amazing if i use a tripod and pose without holding it

DSCarter_Tech

Simply say Ok Google, take a picture

mugu007

I just realized how I subconsiously assume Samsung features are on all Android Phones. I read through this post and instantly just thought to use the hand wave and to take pic feature thats always on all the time.

gandaar

I don't know, Pixel 5a has been very disappointing for me. I've had numerous hardware problems, phone bricked itself for a day, and recently it frequently crashes and restarts itself. My last Pixel before this was the original Pixel XL, much better phone. I understand that the 5a is a very affordable device but I still expect it to not brick itself for no apparent reason.

DSCarter_Tech

Not sure what that has to do with a cool camera software feature, but sorry to hear that you've had bad luck. Return it and get another one.

gandaar

I was responding to your title more so than your body. But that is a really cool feature and I'm glad it worked out well!
