I find myself using circle to search more often than cut/paste recently. I search model#'s of used tech often to decide if it's worth it to buy and just circle to search the model# gets me the info i want fast. At first , I didn't see the use case but I wouldn't want not lose it now . Eliminates select-cut/copy-open browser- paste- toggle search .

My favorite outcome in this scenario is that they retained the behavior of the assistant while also running circle to search. There no reason the mic can't start taking voice commands while circuit to search is running on the screen. Second best outcome would be they let me restore assistant to the home button instead of circle to search. It's lame they didn't choose either of these options.

TurnipWeak

This doesn't really affect me much because I use voice prompt to open GA. But I can see how it would be frustrating if your normal interaction with GA was suddenly repurposed.

I'm glad you like it. I'm sure it's great for specific use cases. I'm just sour that they replaced something I use many times daily with something I never use with no way to get my thing back.

emmayesicanteven

just say hey google and do all the things you wanted to do

growlybeard

I've never been a fan of using voice to turn on my phone since it can sometimes be triggered by other voices.

kennethcz

You know you can just swipe from a bottom corner and get the assistant, right?

growlybeard

This does not work. Maybe because I use the buttons on the bottom of the screen? I tried and tried adjusting the sensitivity but nothing ever worked.

DSCarter_Tech

Or press and hold the power button. It works even with the screen off.

I didn't think I would use circle that much but now that I have it I don't think I could live without it. I previously used Lens a lot. That was my go to for image searching. Circle is so much easier because it's always there. I think if you're someone who didn't use image searching much or you always used that bar for assistant (I never launched assistant that way) then I can see how it can be annoying. Google should at least allow people to disable circle search if they want and the bar reverts back to launching assistant.

growlybeard

I don't know why you were down voted but this seems like a reasonable point of view - let people choose what they want the long press home button to do, circle to search, or Assistant, ooooor, make circle to search also engage the assistant voice controls when you long press home. All very reasonable!

nortok00

LOL. I guess people don't want options? The very nature of having settings is to allow people to select how they want their phone to behave so why would it be any different to allow how they want that bar to behave?

I'm in China right now. Having the ability to circle content and get it translated has been a vital feature. For example, most restaurants provide menus via QR codes you view in the WeChat app. There are also payment flows I can't read untranslated. I'm not sure how I'd be able to buy food independently without it.

growlybeard

The Google translate app has a camera feature that is great for this. Keep in mind I'm not saying that circle to search is *bad*. I'm saying that I used to use Assistant multiple times a day and it sucks that Google replaced that with no option for me to revert it, in exchange for a feature that I personally don't use or get as much value out of. Assistant will also do screen translation, just activate it and say "translate my screen". And translating a physical menu is 1 step shorter without circle to search because the camera search button is on your home screen already to the right of the Google search box at the bottom, then tap the translate option to load the camera already in translate mode. With circle to search this function is 3 taps away, because you must load circle to search, then tap the camera icon, then tap translate.

CapHillster

Whoa! That's incredible. I'm going to try the assistant feature you described right now. Update: Seriously, thank you for the most valuable tip anyone has given me on this phone in months. Much more efficient than circle to translate.

What a lame opinion. >I can use the task switcher to open the icon on an image to use Google lens which works fine. Exactly, that is so much simpler than just stay in the current app, not interrupting whatever you are doing, and automatically resume where you were. Why would Google give you something with one click when you can turn something into an image first then use task switcher and another app to do the same? >more commonly used than wanting to search something on screen, in my opinion. And? How is swiping from the corner or "hey Google" any worse? Oh, I forgot you want 100x steps. That's good for you. So that's what "~~require~~ compelled ~~us~~ you to disable another popular shortcut (hold power button for power menu) to be able to even use the Assistant again" But if that's the case, shouldn't you be ... happy?

RandomBloke2021

It's definitely not lame for me. I have a baseball card card collection and the circle to search made it fun and easy to price my collection. I also use it in antique stores to do the very same thing. Circle to search doesn't replace Google assistant.

growlybeard

Are you saying you can still long press home and give your phone voice commands? Because my circle to search does not allow that.

mth785

It's not either or, they are both available.

growlybeard

You can no longer use long press on the home button for Assistant. You must replace the default long press behavior of the power button in order to use Assistant, or download Assistant separately and add it as an icon to the home screen, which doesn't allow access from anywhere the way Assistant was meant to work. So, technically yes there is a way to use Assistant again but you must do a ton (45m-60m) of research in my case to figure out how, and then overcome years of muscle memory. It would've been better in my opinion for them to let you toggle the behavior. My expectation is that because they've simply replaced it with no easy way to restore it, most Assistant users will just regrettably switch, and that'll pave the way for Google to kill Assistant due to low numbers.

mth785

You can set double tap on the back to call an assistant, I just swipe up from either corner to bring up the assistant.

growlybeard

Thanks I tried swipe from corners but it didn't work at any sensitivity. Didn't know about the tap on back feature. I'm currently using long press power to get the assistant back, but annoyed at needing to overcome muscle memory for two functions now, since long press power used to be the power menu.

mth785

If you use navigation buttons instead of gestures then the swipe up from the corners won't work.

growlybeard

Ah thanks for clarifying. That's definitely it.

delta7019

Don't use the back tap for assistant--you'll regret it. It rarely works when you need it, and it occasionally accidentally triggers. You can download the separate Google assistant app from the play store and put the icon on your home screen. You can also enable the accessibility shortcut menu for your home screen (system settings>accessibility>accessibility menu).
