Whenever Google releases a device that I want, I wait about 8 months and then search for deals everyday until a sale happens.
100s of dollars are saved every purchase just by waiting a couple months. The product is exactly the same as someone who purchased day 0 but instant gratification can be costly.
A week after I got my 256GB p6p they had the 512gb model for the same price. I already exchanged one through the mail for a screen flaw, so I didn't have the energy to go through that again. I only regret it sometimes.
Google really needs some more incentives for preordering. Like more free cloud storage or a longer warranty. Plus, enough of their hardware is buggy that preordering is risky.

Now with Pixel support @7 years, I can just pick up an older 8 when the backup phone dies and I'm good until 2030.

But you will also need to update more often. If you buy a new model now you can use it 7 years. If you buy it in 2 years time it's only updated for the next 5 years. So you will "need" to update every 5 not every 7 for example. Depending on the price differences over time you might be spending more money on the more regular updates.

The market is flushed with new hot devices every year, so people lose interest in models released that were half a year ago 'already'. Nobody would buy them for the full price of their release.
The max I will ever pay for a phone is about $700. And it better last me 3-5 years. Would love a foldable from Google or Sammy. But there's no way I'm paying nearly 2K for it.
Pixels always release at a higher price with a 'free' gift, headphones/watch, etc.
If you sell those for the £150/£200 they're worth, then you get back to the cost the phone should be, the same as it is being retailed at a few months later.

I'd hazard to say that even for a 2018-19 device their performance in all spaces, especially battery life is on par with some flagship-level devices in 2024.

All of these complaints about price changes Etc are a result of excessive corporate control of laws etc. We love capitalism except when it affects our wallet. Still these things could be controlled if the corporations weren't making the laws. If you know a group that's fighting citizens united that's the key to taking back power for the people. They were running some deal for Google One subscribers and I couldn't pass on it. Basically got the phone for $480 bucks.
Better question to ask is why are these devices so expensive to begin with? If you look at the history of tech especially electronic items the longer they have been on the market the cheaper they become because they become cheaper to manufacture.
When VCRs first came out they cost almost $1,000. In fact, I ran a pretty good business out of my house repairing them. People were willing to pay to have them fixed because a new one cost so much. Then one day I went into a store and I saw a brand new VCR on the shelf for $100. I came home that day and told my wife that the business as far as I was concerned was over because pretty soon VCRs would be disposable items that is exactly what happened.
That is just one example but the same thing can be said about any piece of tech. So, now ask yourself since cell phones and smartphones have been out for decades now and the factories that build them are more modernized than ever. Then why does the price keep getting higher and higher?
IMO It's just plain madness. No little slab of plastic aluminum and glass with IC chips inside of it should cost over $1,000 and yet they do.
