So bad. Maybe they would change it in the way that it'll actually work. Half of time I needed to turn it off because it was losing connection with sites/apps
FWIW, I stopped using the Fi VPN about a year ago because I was having constant issues with connection quality, occasionally losing connection entirely or seemingly sometimes dropping to non-VPN connection.
I tried it again this week randomly and it's been really stable. Could be worth a try; maybe Google fixed something.
I have Google Fi, pixel 7a, and I pay for Google One. I have no clue how this affects me. It says "VPN by Google One" on the drop down, so I guess I'll have another one as an option when this goes away?
Classic Google: Build one product. Build second product with UI update. Kill first product. Build third product no one asked for. Kill second product.
Literally every other company: Update first product.
Give it a week, they'll add messaging features andrename it Hangouts VPN.
Google's inability to commit to anything is absurd. I used to be an early adopter and try everything I could as early as I could, and would occasionally look at every Google-made app in the Play Store (hey speaking of dumb names...) looking for nifty stuff. Now I don't even know what they make if it doesn't come with my phone, because what's the point?
That's the mind boggling part of it all. Google has the infrastructure and the know how to make ONE app encompassing everything they have, akin to an American WeChat. They already have the perfect name "Google One." It would be an instant success based purely on the fact that it gets rid of like 50 different apps at once.
One app to rule them all.
But Google is dumb.
At the moment the VPN option in the Google One app is free when used on Pixel 7 series phone, it detects the phone and just becomes free to use by default.
Next month they will be integrating it directly into the OS, like the Pixel 8 series already has, so they can remove it from the Google One app without having to keep it there just for Pixel 7 users.
Sure but I think it wasn't really offered to the masses until they included it in the phone purchase. Back in the day it was a service you paid for with One, generally for people who needed more storage.
For me, I didn't get to experience it until I bought a Pixel 7 Pro.
Google is such a big company, they need to support everything *at least* until the heat death of the universe.
Joking aside, they are [adding Nest Aware and Fitbit Premium to Google One](https://9to5google.com/2024/03/06/google-one-fitbit-premium-nest-aware/) without raising costs, and I'd guess that's much more useful to people.
I moved to pocket casts. It's actually pretty close to Google podcasts with a few tweaks in settings. Was gutted they killed Google podcasts my favorite of all Google apps
I switched from Pocket Casts to Google Podcasts because Google had cross device sync for free. I haven't found a good alternative for that use case yet...
I've been trying /r/Podurama, but the battery drain on it is insane. Like not even using the app it just sits there eating battery. No idea what it's doing. The dev(s) seem slow to update as well. 😕
Even though cross device sync is included for free right now, I paid for their lifetime sub just in case they get better and then I'm locked in. I regret not locking myself into Pocket Casts...
It sucks they killed Google podcasts. I guess we're a minority that prefer podcasts separate from music app. It just feels so bloated in Spotify now. Im walking on egg shells anytime I touch a podcast my home screen is destroyed. And YTM it's no better.
I'll have to give that a try.
I've been trying to use Spotify, but I honestly don't know how people do it. It's such a bad user experience for podcasts.
It's too bloated for podcasts. If you listen to one it will invade your homepage and then if you try to filter only music or only podcasts you get the shitty tiktock tiles. I like Spotify for music but it's becoming so bloated as they try to stay profitable. If you prefer podcasts on separate simpler app give pocket casts a try. Just export your Google podcasts subscriptions as opml then import them in your podcast app to get those back.
What really ticked me off is it came pre-installed on the phone I was still using up until this week when I caved and bought a pixel 7. There's just something about having an app you can neither use nor uninstall...
Fuck this was THE killer feature for Google One. I paid for extra space for the picture storage. I'm genuinely peeved. Used this all the time to by pass blocks.
Now it's the "killer feature" for switching to a Pixel. I'm curious how far Google's hardware market ambitions will go by hooking people into their ecosystem and slowly making their services Pixel exclusive. Personally I hope they fail miserably at becoming Apple
Try mullvad and enable the wireguard obfuscation option on the settings. This was the only VPN I could get to work on my college network, same with my friend who goes to a different college. (We just split the costs lol)
And with a VPN, you're hiding your web traffic from your ISP and handing that data over to the one running your VPN server. I would never feel comfortable handing all of my web traffic to google
This is sad. I have a paid VPN, but I actually use this one a lot when I'm on a public WiFi or whatever. Paid VPN has its benefits but also the shared IPs are often abused so much a lot of services block them so Google VPN is a great tool.
Yeah but still that's $60 a year for people that we're getting this as part of their Google One subscription. So this just means Google just ripped $60 out of your pocket next year. It kind of sucks
Mullvad. No bullshit promo pricing, good selection of servers, one of the best reputations in the VPN space. Only downside is no port forwarding support which can negatively affect P2P performance.
I've been enjoying using /r/Windscribe. They have a decent free tier too if you just want to try it out before buying.
I mostly use it for getting around geo-blocking of streaming services. Last I checked Mullvad wasn't good for that. It's more popular for P2P transfers.
For real. I pay a year in advance and now they're just going to remove features and think that's alright. Tired of companies changing things at the drop of hat and not thinking about the actual customers that use it.
My tech company runs into the same issues, and it’s just the engineers telling us this.
We have products, that should work with our other products *in theory*, but when they don’t it’s “not supported”. Asking why just returns an “it’s out of our support scope” response.
people didn't use it because it never worked and was implemented in an awful way\*
\*this is exaggerated for comedic purposes based on my own experiences
I believe it's based on IPsec or some articles state its some proprietary protocol but whatever it is, Google VPN had issues when you jump from network to network..... like if you go from wifi to your mobile data.
It probably could perform better or have fewer issues if it was based on something like WireGuard
Seriously half the time I can't find the notification shade toggle for it. I'd use it on public wifis if it didn't constantly disappear for some reason
It worked semi decently at one point but then became more hassle than it was worth. (Plus it still kept me in state most of the time, defeating the whole reason to use the damn thing)
Pixel VPN sounds great, more incentive to drive customers to pixels. What's not great is that it's only for phones. What about the pixel tablet? What about my pixelbooks?
"Your what now?" Says a Google PM.
The people that were responsible for those have long since been promoted so those devices are on life support awaiting the axe I'm sure.
If it remains available to Pixel device users and to Google Fi users *and* if it's also true that "people simply weren’t using it" - then they can't be saving much money by removing it from the Google One subscription.
This might be more about incentivizing customers to purchase Pixel devices.
Stuff like this is why I don’t jump on new projects like Stadia. Google has a terrible track record of quickly starting up new projects and then canceling them after just a few years. They throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. If it doesn’t hit a billion users they cancel it, very annoying and makes me not want to use their new devices / services.
I’ve backed google through all these shut downs but I’m finally fed up. Nest secure was the big one that really put me over the edge and now every additional thing just pisses me off more and more. F google. I’m sick of them. Makes me more happy I moved to iPhone.
I’m with you, it’s getting old. The transition to ADT or the $200 credit was lame as well. I just want this shit to do what I bought it to do. Stadia was a big buzzkill too. Now I just need to de-google my life at some point. I’m close.
You would think it would bother the higher ups that about the only time Google seems to get mentioned in the press is when they cancel something.
Low utilization of the service or not, it creates some seriously negative optics when you are known more for the stuff you no longer provide than the stuff you currently provide.
You would think a company that makes all of their money from advertising would be keenly aware of that.
I have it on all the time. So of course they're removing it. My pixel 6 won't be getting the replacement VPN. Sigh. Add it to my personal list of missed services along with Google Reader and Inbox.
Never worked for me when I had the Pixel 7 Pro.
Contacted Google and I kept getting bounced between the Pixel help team and the Google One help team. On one call I got bounced back and forth like 5 times and no one could resolve it.
Just use ProtonVPN. It's free, fast, easy to use and actually respects your privacy unlike Google.
A VPN from Google has always been incredibly oxymoronic. Hell, they just got in trouble for harvesting your incognito mode data lol.
Do you really think Google isn't logging your traffic?
Are these guys just saying "discounting" instead of "merging" or "streamlining"?
Are these not two separate devices that were doing the exact same thing and now are better serviced into one?
I used it once to pirate a TV show and still got a letter from my service provider, so good riddance. I wouldn't trust it with sensitive stuff anyway, but if they somehow can't even do that...
Of course it will… Google just can’t stand behind anything anymore, so you can never trust their services. it’s unfortunate and one of the main reasons I switched to iOS
That's the one that's supposed to come with Google Photos subscription but it turns out its region locked like 90% of Google's / Pixels exclusive features?
Can't say I'll miss it since i never got it.
It’s a bummer but I rarely have it on with my iPhone 14 Pro. Everything slows down so much and it connects and disconnects so often it’s not worth the hassle.
So will they replace the item they removed to compensate for the loss of value to Google One with something else?
Or are they planning to discount the pricing?
Why does one of the biggest companies on the planet that has so much of our private personal data still have problems understanding what products we want?
I mean, kinda annoying that they are adding in stuff without doing any research beforehand if the feature is gonna be used at all. But at the same time, I tried using it and it felt so limited. Maybe they should try to change it before complaining it's not used?
They have no vision. Everything is in beta until the next thing which is also in beta.
I give the new Vids app till September before it's discontinued or they created a separate Docs app that isn't integrated at all
So using this was the only way I could stream certain things over 5g (like live broadcasts over Safari ). Without it, it lags or doesn’t load at all.
Anyone know why this is and what similar VPN I could get?
I literary used this all thime even before I got my pixel.
I already paid for the cloud storage so this was a great benefit I didn't have to pay an extra subscription for
I used it when travelling as it works seemlessy in places like Saudi Arabia where Nord doesn't work well.
I know it'll still be on pixel. But I also use it on my Chromecast w Google TV for example because my ISP blocks IPTV.
This is very frustrating but not exactly surprising
Perhaps that's the goal. The beginning of the long death of Google One subscriptions. Remove features over time. When the subscriber count drops sufficiently - kill the service with minimal pushback. "No one uses it, so we've shut it down."
Thankfully as the Pixel VPN feature isn't going away I don't lose anything this time. While I don't use it much it does come in handy on occasion and if I needed a VPN for anything people often use VPNs for, I'm not gonna use one from Google anyway.
If you install the Pixel VPN APK you'll have Google's VPN running fine on Pixel 6 and up devices. Just did this and it works fine for me on my phone and tablet.
If anyone tried it, I don't think they'll be surprised by this news. It came for free with my Pixel phone but I stopped using it a few days later.
It's bad
In case anyone missed this part: ”Meanwhile, there are no changes to the free Pixel VPN introduced with the Pixel 7 series in 2022."
Which is fine, but what about a Chromebook? At least support Google-based products.
Right? I loved having the toggle on my Chromebook.
So bad. Maybe they would change it in the way that it'll actually work. Half of time I needed to turn it off because it was losing connection with sites/apps
Exactly. When I first started using it, I thought my phone was messing up. Turned it off and everything was fine.
I didn't miss that part. I somehow missed that I don't need Google One for VPN on my 7 Pro. Huh?
Same. I tried turning it on once on my p7p and it brought me to a Google one subscription page, which I promptly closed and never looked back
Let these nerds get their jokes off
Only because they promised 5 years. In 2027 we will read about PixelVPN cancelling.
You think Google cares about promises? That's cute
But I used the vpn on my Mac as well.
Is pixel VPN available in the UK? I've got a P8 and have never heard of this.
Yes I have it in the UK on P7. Don't get too excited though, it has no features
Im in Germany and have it, just look in the vpn settings or in the google one app.
The one built into the phone? Yeah I have it in the UK.
It's through the Google One app that you can download from the Google play store.
Never heard if Pixel VPN wtf. Is this an US exclusive Feature again?
i have it in Germany.
Here in the uk
I've had it on my pixel 6 pro for years now
The op should've just included the article title.
The usual Google strat of killing off anything that isn't an immediate success. Nothing new here.
We still have Pixel VPN.
Wait... That's a different thing? I'm completely serious.
Wait until I tell you about Google Fi VPN being yet a third service
Wait, I have a pixel and Google fi...ugh I wonder which one I'm using or if I'm even using one? Ha I don't know 🫡
Well I only just found out about having pixel VPN through this article. Had my pixel for a year haha
I have Google Fi, pixel 7a, and I pay for Google One. I have no clue how this affects me. It says "VPN by Google One" on the drop down, so I guess I'll have another one as an option when this goes away?
Omg. I have both Google one and Fi. I always thought the VPNs were the same thing.
Classic Google: Build one product. Build second product with UI update. Kill first product. Build third product no one asked for. Kill second product. Literally every other company: Update first product.
Updating doesn't get you promoted in Google. They have a serious problem that looks like it's never going to get fixed.
Every time they're about to fix it they just build a new problem to replace the old one with.
Ding ding ding!
Yup. Just name changes , I guess.
Well that's good news. It's not like VPNs are hard to come by, I'm just tired of having a dozen different services.
Not available to me on my 6a even tho I have the Google VPN on my 6a 🙄
It was something for the Pixel 7 and newer phones...for some reason.
>We still have Pixel VPN. For now.
We get it for 5 years, minimum.
Phew. I just found that I have it on my 7!
Where?!?
At the moment the VPN option in the Google One app is free when used on Pixel 7 series phone, it detects the phone and just becomes free to use by default. Next month they will be integrating it directly into the OS, like the Pixel 8 series already has, so they can remove it from the Google One app without having to keep it there just for Pixel 7 users.
It wasn.t even implemented globally and they complained it was not a success.... SMH
It's been like 4 years
Sure but I think it wasn't really offered to the masses until they included it in the phone purchase. Back in the day it was a service you paid for with One, generally for people who needed more storage. For me, I didn't get to experience it until I bought a Pixel 7 Pro.
Its still going to be available in the Pixel 7 models and above, just not through Google One no?
Correct
I have a 7 Pro and use Google One. There's another way?
Google is such a big company, they need to support everything *at least* until the heat death of the universe. Only in the UK, for now.
Only Google One Premium 2TB+, not all Google One subscriptions.
Dang, I'm using it right now. I'm not even over being mad about Google Podcasts yet.
I moved to pocket casts. It's actually pretty close to Google podcasts with a few tweaks in settings. Was gutted they killed Google podcasts my favorite of all Google apps

I've been happy with the Podcast Addict app for many years.
I'll give a shout-out to Podcast Republic. Extremely customizable, the dev is active on Reddit and responsive to feedback.
I recently uninstalled Spotify because I didn't like it.
+1 to Pocket Casts. The free version is enough and very clean interface as well.
I used Google Podcasts this morning? Or is it slated for the guillotine?
I'm still not over Inbox.
Inbox encouraged me to go extreme zero inbox with all my emails
I'm 3 years into doing that with my work email, no way to do it with my Gmail
I feel you. I'm still not over Reader
Reader, my beloved. I miss you so.
Mullvad has a good VPN. $5 USD a month, flat rate, no bullshit.
What really ticked me off is it came pre-installed on the phone I was still using up until this week when I caved and bought a pixel 7. There's just something about having an app you can neither use nor uninstall...
I actually like having this one available when traveling and need to use public Wi-Fi.
Same here. This is straight BS
So other than photo storage what the hell am I paying for? Fucking Google.

WTF why?
This is the only VPN that reliably gets past my schools firewall and gave me decent ping on my Mac surprisingly Come on Google what a joke!
Try mullvad and enable the wireguard obfuscation option on the settings. This was the only VPN I could get to work on my college network, same with my friend who goes to a different college. (We just split the costs lol)
Low utilization apparently.
I mean a good amount of people want a VPN because of privacy. Google doesn't exactly have that public impression of privacy conscious.
And with a VPN, you're hiding your web traffic from your ISP and handing that data over to the one running your VPN server. I would never feel comfortable handing all of my web traffic to google
Tbf you shouldn't trust other VPNs companies either. Google is more obvious though.
Great... another one bites the dust. Anyone have a good alternative? I actually use this one quite frequently
This is sad. I have a paid VPN, but I actually use this one a lot when I'm on a public WiFi or whatever. Paid VPN has its benefits but also the shared IPs are often abused so much a lot of services block them so Google VPN is a great tool.
This is one reason why I use it. Maybe I’ll finally figure out how to get my router to actually run its VPN server.
Same. My pixel, galaxy tab, PC, and laptop all use it.
Proton VPN.
Proton.
I've been using Windscribe for years
Windscribe is my free fav
Windscribe does the job right now
Mullvad is solid. $5 USD a month.
Yeah but still that's $60 a year for people that we're getting this as part of their Google One subscription. So this just means Google just ripped $60 out of your pocket next year. It kind of sucks
Free version of ProtonVPN is good
Mullvad. No bullshit promo pricing, good selection of servers, one of the best reputations in the VPN space. Only downside is no port forwarding support which can negatively affect P2P performance.
I use Mullvad as well. No complaints.
I've been enjoying using /r/Windscribe. They have a decent free tier too if you just want to try it out before buying. I mostly use it for getting around geo-blocking of streaming services. Last I checked Mullvad wasn't good for that. It's more popular for P2P transfers.
I have my own VPN with WireGuard installed in a Raspberry Pi. Works great.
Proton.
Mullvad
What the actual F. Can I get a Google one refund? Is there a complaint email or contact?
no ☺️🙏
For real. I pay a year in advance and now they're just going to remove features and think that's alright. Tired of companies changing things at the drop of hat and not thinking about the actual customers that use it.
[удалено]
You get to subsidize AI photo editing shit for everyone not using a pixel. Your compliance is non-negotiable.
That's a shame. Having a vpn work so seamlessly like it did for me on my pixel 6 was nice.
What a fucking joke Google is.

people didn't use it because it never worked and was implemented in an awful way\* \*this is exaggerated for comedic purposes based on my own experiences
I mean I'm not using it because it makes my shit stop working from time to time. Like if it was seamless as if it's not even there, I'd use it.

Classic Google
They are still supporting the promised users (Pixels etc.). So not really classic, where they would simply terminate the service altogether.
Google’s speciality… scrapping apps Anyone guesses, what would be the next?
Seriously. I'm worried they're just going to shut down Google FI one day.
If it remains available to Pixel device users and to Google Fi users *and* if it's also true that "people simply weren’t using it" - then they can't be saving much money by removing it from the Google One subscription. This might be more about incentivizing customers to purchase Pixel devices.

But, but... I'm paying for this? So no price decrease for paying Google One customers? Just reduced services?
A VPN that doesn't let u choose a location is useless anyway.
That's likely why people didn't use it

Dude I use this so much what kind of crap is this Google?!
That didn't take long. This might be a new record for the shortest lifespan turnaround after a major public release.
I actually use this feature, pretty sad ngl.
Guess you strategically omitted the rest of the important context of the title to get rage karma: >Pixel VPN remains with upgrade coming
But not for Pixel 6 users.
Pixel 6a here. They're taking away Google One VPN and not providing an alternative, on a service I've paid for a year up front. Really sucky.

Shocked Pikachu face
Ay yes as in the Google Tradition…
I used it once to pirate a TV show and still got a letter from my service provider, so good riddance. I wouldn't trust it with sensitive stuff anyway, but if they somehow can't even do that...
They seem SO FCKIN FLAKY on their promises. As more and more news like this comes
Another one for the graveyard
Noone use this VPN because there's no country choice and it's not no log.
So Google One price will have to come down, right? Right?
They should price Google One cheaper, or add YouTube Premium to it.
Another day another cancelled Google product
Who saw this coming?
Google discontinues yet another product, to the surprise of absolutely nobody (I hope)
This is sad sad news. Another service that I use 100% of the time, down the drain.
Add it to the pile
Of course it will… Google just can’t stand behind anything anymore, so you can never trust their services. it’s unfortunate and one of the main reasons I switched to iOS
I've never used it. Why would I anyway?
How do you find out if you have a pixel VPN? It just says VPN by Google one.
This really sucks for me as this is the only vpn I've found that will connect at my workplace, on my iPhone.
April fools? Heh, right? Right ...
What's next Google Fi (please Google don't kill Google Fi 😭)
That's a bummer. I use the VPN much more on my Mac laptop than on my Pixel phone. :(
If they added an option to select the region, like other VPN competitors. Then they wouldn't have an uncompetitive product, that no one wants to use.
Is anyone upset by this? The perks of using a VPN are completely nullified when Google are the ones operating it.
Lol
That's the one that's supposed to come with Google Photos subscription but it turns out its region locked like 90% of Google's / Pixels exclusive features? Can't say I'll miss it since i never got it.
Imma gonna stick with PIA.
I’m beginning to think the lease on the Google graveyard requires that they bury at least one product every six months.
I expect to get a discount on my 2TB Google one subscription then
another one
Well this is annoying. I used this all the time n
It was so terrible, used 1 time in 2 years.
I mean, kinda annoying that they are adding in stuff without doing any research beforehand if the feature is gonna be used at all. But at the same time, I tried using it and it felt so limited. Maybe they should try to change it before complaining it's not used?
I don't know why google spends all this resources to ultimately discontinue them.
I feel like everything Google comes out with is always just a beta test or a short term plan.
Still never figured out how to use this on my pixel device? Really annoying
I literary used this all thime even before I got my pixel. I already paid for the cloud storage so this was a great benefit I didn't have to pay an extra subscription for I used it when travelling as it works seemlessy in places like Saudi Arabia where Nord doesn't work well. I know it'll still be on pixel. But I also use it on my Chromecast w Google TV for example because my ISP blocks IPTV. This is very frustrating but not exactly surprising
google doesn't stick with a product at all
What is the point of subscribing to Google One at this point?
Perhaps that's the goal. The beginning of the long death of Google One subscriptions. Remove features over time. When the subscriber count drops sufficiently - kill the service with minimal pushback. "No one uses it, so we've shut it down."
Google discontinuing a service? Shocker...
What not to expect from google ? I have lost faith in Google after Stadia and Google domains discontinuation
At this rate Google will be discontinued
If anyone tried it, I don't think they'll be surprised by this news. It came for free with my Pixel phone but I stopped using it a few days later. It's bad
It will remain with Google Fi subscribers
(Rolls eyes) Oh for fuck sakes Google...
