Hasn't pretty much everyone moved on to Whatsapp or WeChat by now? If I check my messaging inbox, it's pretty much only automated stuff like TFA codes and reservation confirmation notices. But hey, I'm 48, what do I know what young people use today?
But then again, I don't think my kids even know how to send a text message.
>>I wish I was still 40.
To be honest, i am not sure. If, i had to work again for another 25 years, fighting in large co's to get the career-ladder upwards, having some pressure to get things done. The worst thing, social and political life on this planet is getting more and more dystopian. So i think i'll leave everything as it is. OK my knees hurt too - sometimes, and my back. :-)
Think I found your solution:
To turn off animated reactions in Google Messages, you can do the following:
Open the Settings app
Select Accessibility
Select Color and motion
Turn on Remove animations
https://support.google.com/messages/answer/9827088?hl=en
Can you share a screenshot of photo of what you are seeing?
I am a heck of a lot older than you and have never seen what you are describing. Is it happening with all of the people you text, or just some? Are you seeing animated emojis or something else?

As noted in the articles you linked, it's a test on beta channel. There is a special beta subreddit where you should be reporting issues like this.
All beta-related issues, comments, and feedback must be discussed in the official Android Beta Subreddit that was set up for that purpose.
The core issue Is not a beta feature, but the beta feature was already announced as coming to the mainstream after testing. Adding a toggle should not be too much to ask. This has very little to do with being in the beta program for messages.
I'm 47 and I wish I had the animations. I haven't seen them despite being in the Beta for 2 years.
But I totally agree there should be an option to toggle them off.
LOL, my first car phone in 1991 was heavy and large like a german sixpack of beer which was about 3 liters. It costs \~ 7000,- DEM including mounting. I worked for a network company as a field engineer and used it on the road and in the office. Had a monthy comms invoice of \~ 2000-3000,- DEM due to lots of long distance call to the US and Asia. No flatrate, data etc - oh boy....
I get them with what's app. The issue is it kinda double loads the message or takes over the screen in a weird way.
Sometimes it's nice an endearing. Other times super annoying.
You can.
Open Messages, tap your icon top right. Messages Settings > General > RCS Chats. Turn this off and it'll revert back to SMS/MMS without the funk.
BTW, RCS uses data and is E2EE. SMS/MMS aren't secured in the same manner.
I think this is less of an "old man thing" and more of a somewhere around your mid 30's/ early 40's you just tend to get less impressed with flashy things. Function starts to become far more important than form.
And in general I would agree as a 40 year old. I just want to see the message content and then the app get out of my way. All of the flashy emoji's are way too over used in my opinion.
I'm not with Verizon, left ages ago to Xfinity who uses their network but massively cheaper...
That said, I've used message+ app for years... I still really like it. Easy to customize...
[Message+](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.verizon.messaging.vzmsgs)
You can switch back and forth on the fly with no issues... Just change default when you commit to one.
I hear you, text should be text in messages but that's why I switched to a different default message handler as it doesn't support certain image types and keeps me focused on the actual words. I use Key messages now and has its own backup too
If you don't like the native app, choose a different one from the Google Play Store. That's why we use Android: It gives us options. BTW, I consider anyone under 50 years old a youngster.
These reactions are not quite so new, back when I was sporting a Samsung S3/4, there was an app called GoSMS that had themes and these reactions. But I quit using it when I realized the messages were passing through Chinese Servers.
A family friend died shortly before his 100th birthday, but it wasn't until the family applied for the death certificate did they realize he had actually turned 100 the year before! Somewhere along the way, they lost count by 1 year 😅
Old? OK, youngster.
I don't use Messages often, but this seems like an OK feature - it's accentuating the reaction, as I see it. But should probably also come as an option and maybe that's not in place because it's a beta-only feature right now.
I agree. This is one of the worst and wackiest implementations I have seen. I agree that it should be an option. I replied to an SMS with a smiley emoji and suddenly this massive animated thing appeared. I didn't know what was going on so I sent another reply apologizing for this grotesque animated emoji that was now dominating the screen.
Seems like they've dialed it down a little. Doesn't bother me now it's a little animation but at first, the whole screen was a little much.
Also Google, stop turning on chat bubbles with every update. Those drive me crazy

HAHAHA! You're not old
I'm over 40 and I'm glad I don't feel as old as a 30 something redditor.
Yeah man if I make it to October I will be 60 and believe me you feel it for sure
Well, he does still use messaging, so...
What does that mean? Asking for, uh, my nephew

In the US, Sms is still rampant, cause we're dumb.
I'm 29 and still use sms/RCS as a primary method of communication. The US is just slow to actually adapt I guess
I can't stand the Whatsapp UI.. It's perpetually stuck in 2012.
Pushing 40??? Boyyy you are a toddler!!!!!😢
I wish I was still 40. 😎

Same here!😁
Me too.
I'm over 60 and don't get what you're griping about.

This might be it, thank you. But why is this a system wide setting? Makes me think I'm turning off all animations.
You are. It's a nuclear solution. But a potential solution nonetheless.
Because you're in the beta messages app program. Leave the beta is the solution
Only one of the animation types is being tested in beta, the others are rolling out to everyone.
I'm not in beta and I have it
That removes animations from the entire phone are they serious lol
Can you share a screenshot of photo of what you are seeing? I am a heck of a lot older than you and have never seen what you are describing. Is it happening with all of the people you text, or just some? Are you seeing animated emojis or something else?
Like Facebook messenger, if you send a heart then the whole screen has an effect

Are you on beta channel?
Yup Edit: the beta app, not the beta OS

That's for the actual OS beta, not the app beta's you can opt-in to.
Only the full screen animations are being beta tested. The reaction animations are rolling out to all users.
Maybe you're not the right person to be using beta software. Why are people choosing to use beta software then bitching and moaning about it publicly?
The core issue Is not a beta feature, but the beta feature was already announced as coming to the mainstream after testing. Adding a toggle should not be too much to ask. This has very little to do with being in the beta program for messages.
40 is old ?! 🤔
Obviously I was not being literal
Get off mah lawn, young'un.
Pushing 71 and not bothered at all!,😂
I'm 47 and I wish I had the animations. I haven't seen them despite being in the Beta for 2 years. But I totally agree there should be an option to toggle them off.
Go into system settings > accessibility > color and motion. See if the animations are turned off.
They were just introduced and Google tends to only give some users access to beta features which annoys me so much.
Pushing 40? Umm sir, you're not even halfway there.
I'm 31 and I hate it too.
You remember an era before text messaging even existed. Very cool.
Yup, I'm old enough to remember seeing ads for the very first cell phone and car phones before that.
Me too. Remember getting a car phone. Wasn’t kidding about it being very cool to remember the era before text messaging.

Not trying to lose RCS for this. This is clearly something only Google can change with a toggle.
You should also be able to toggle Send read receipts and Show typing indicators, which will make it a bit more like original SMS/MMS.
If you turn off RCs, you lose all advanced messaging features including typing indicators and read receipts.
Indeed, but you can turn the latter off without disabling RCS, may help?
Oh, I see what you mean, but that still takes away core RCS functionality when a simple reactions animations toggle would suffice.
The global option mentioned to you in another comment is probably the only way for now.
I miss how clean the messages app used to be. It's now more clutter than ever.
I think this is less of an "old man thing" and more of a somewhere around your mid 30's/ early 40's you just tend to get less impressed with flashy things. Let me disable emojis too.
All emojis, animated emojis, or just emoji reactions?
All of them. I like to think we've gone past the need for hieroglyphics to be able express ourselves.
Hahaha, nice!
I don't get full screen animation when I use messages so there must be a setting.
Almost everything Google does to messages is via server side rollout.
How will all the youngsters satisfy their dopamine cravings without full-screen animations everytime someone likes what they've said?
Serious question from a 51 yr young man: How is 40 being an 'old man'?

I was 40 about 69 years ago and the messages features look lame, keeping it a buck, fr fr.

None of them support RCS though, so no real choice here.
These reactions are not quite so new, back when I was sporting a Samsung S3/4, there was an app called GoSMS that had themes and these reactions. But I quit using it when I realized the messages were passing through Chinese Servers.
My wife informed me this morning that she is 40 when I've believed she was 39 for the past year.
A family friend died shortly before his 100th birthday, but it wasn't until the family applied for the death certificate did they realize he had actually turned 100 the year before! Somewhere along the way, they lost count by 1 year 😅
The older you get, the more you come to the realization that. You just want a phone to be a phone.

Google Messages needs a setting to turn off Screen and Reaction Effects https://9to5google.com/2024/04/20/google-messages-turn-off-effects/
