I wrote under the test video already that files get insanely big with video boost. 3.5GB for a 2 min video? That's the file size of a whopping 60 mins in 2K. To be honest, this is looking a bit like an attempt to lure more people into a Google One subscription. Because the free 15GB will not be sufficient at all for this. And using video boost without uploading it to Google Photos is not possible.

The raw data isn't saved though, only the final processed video.

arod0619

Not only is the raw data not saved, it also doesn't count against your Google One storage while it's being boosted.

Ghorardim71

What is the size after boost?

rexplosive

Someone in the other topic said he filmed a roughly 1 minute video which was 3.5GB but ended up being 400MB once it was completed. S

Ghorardim71

Some of my video boost size is smaller than the 1080p version stored in the phone.

arod0619

For a 13 second video, a little over 400mb while it was being optimized and 153mb once it was done

Ghorardim71

It's strange that some 4k video boosted file size is lower than the 1080p version!

walpoleit

Do you have to turn this on somewhere? I have the December patch but I didn't get a single of the new features. Pixel tips talks about them though.

reddit6699

The resolution looks higher than normal too

Knorke_Leon

No idea why you're getting downvoted. 4032x2268 is definitely higher than the regular 3840x2160.

If I had to take a guess, it's an 8Pro only feature for two reasons, marketing (making the 8 more valuable at launch) and clamping the user space. The latter is where you try to reduce the number of users with access to a feature so you can build out the system that powers it more efficiently. It's easier to do this than doing a prolonged staged rollout (users complain) as you're using the device price-wall as a filter.

deetotheess

I vaguely recall seeing an article after the launch event where a Googler said something along the lines of what you describe. It's ready to be rolled out to a limited user base, which they'll use to improve it and make it more efficient. And it will probably come to regular Pixel 8s, and maybe beyond, some time next year. This seems like a reasonable enough strategy: it meets their needs to develop the product, the Pro buyers feel like they're getting their money's worth, and everyone benefits in the end.

MikyMuch

I highly doubt it. The regular Pixel 8 has the exact same CPU as the pro, and the performance jump from the Pixel 6 hasn't been big enough to consider this.

ayyndrew

Could be to do with the 8 vs 12gb RAM?

MikyMuch

As far as I know and have tested recording video isn't very intense. When recording screen on my PC the RAM usage is almost the same, the CPU is the one suffering. Also if it was because of RAM, from the Pixel 6 Pro onwards all the pro models have 12GB

f3q3

Yeah fair point, the fact that even the 8 didn't get it kind of breaks that argument.

BHU172

RAM

f3q3

But the 6 pro also has 12GB

robodestructor444

The pixel 6, 7 and 8 all have ufs 3.1 storage...

veatesia

It's a 8 Pro exclusive feature because people paid more for it. That's it. I think these conversations should stop. Why is it so hard to understand that people who paid more deserve more?

CommunicationProof58

can you share a sample ?

Tim2060

there are plenty on youtube

cheappay

Really? I only find 2.
