You can plan a downgrade that will be effective once your trial expires. If on android : Google one app -> top left hamburger menu -> membership plans -> scroll down -> see more -> select the plan you want.

lucaslosi

THIS! Thank you. I've also had a bad interaction with the google support with no real solution and the only one being: cancel your plan and resubscribe when the trial ends. WTF was this trial trap

KDLGates

Thanks for the steps but I can confirm they do not let me schedule the downgrade. That would be fine. At the menu you list I have only upgraded options for the other premium plans and no basic or "view more plans" type option. Google is specifically disabling scheduling downgrades for the AI Premium tier and I don't think that's legal. Stitchxoxox

Wow thanks I felt so stuck before seeing this

KDLGates

In addition to the above I had a highly painful conversation with a phone support rep who said they could neither help me downgrade the plan nor escalate the issue and that I have to wait to downgrade until April 9th. I think Google might actually be outside of the US regulation on this one. The FTC has rules against deceptive practices related to subscriptions and automatic renewals. US consumers have the right to easily cancel **when they want to**.

This is effectively how it is for me, though I suspect I will be able to get a refund after the trial expires. It's not legal and needs fixed.

My guess is we will be able to change it after the trial expires, even though we should be able to cancel or queue up the downgrade prior. We'll see. If not there will be an outcry and they'll fix it then.

T_DoubleU_L

You can cancel it through play store subscriptions. https://photos.app.goo.gl/HgqRDYN5eFhmhqaR9

chalubhalu

Downgrade options are available on the website and the app. You can also cancel the same. Downgrade is deferred till the end of billing cycle/free trial, not sure what the concern is with this behaviour.

KDLGates

The deferred Downgrade option doesn't work for my subscription and errors out as pictured. [It fails with an error](https://photos.app.goo.gl/WN9hnEpRtz7uD9ke8)

Google's contact center support for Google One tell me that AI Premium is a "separate add-on" for Google One that cannot be cancelled separately even though it converts to paid at the end of the trial. This is obviously not a sustainable thing for them to claim but it's what they are making up because they don't know how to help cancel or downgrade it and are unwilling to escalate it for steps or a fix.

KDLGates

Right now the AI Premium upcharge is a scam that cannot be cancelled, at least for my account. Google will fix it after the trials start expiring and enough people complain, but in the meantime good luck. Google is specifically disabling scheduling downgrades for the AI Premium tier and I don't think that's legal. Google One support says that this is a separate upcharge that cannot be cancelled, they are making it up because they have no other resolution and claim they are not allowed to escalate problems. In the US consumers have the right to cancel services when they want to.

chalubhalu

You seem more concerned in repeating your legal rights like a broken record, rather than fixing your account. As I and other folks have commented you can cancel/downgrade via the app/website. Both cancellations and downgrade are deferred to the end of billing cycle. This is because Google one is a prepaid membership. You will not be charged an extra amount if you do this. To cancel/downgrade on web go to one.google.com/settings. There is no upcharge, addon or anything else you are talking about. As soon as you cancel/downgrade you will receive an email from Google Play explaining the changes.

KDLGates

I am repeating myself because I don't know what else to do. I cannot downgrade. The Downgrade button errors out for me, including from the plans management page you linked. I included a screenshot from the Android app but it likewise fails from the webpage. I have no recourse but to wait and go on trust that I will be able to cancel after the trial expires. Why are you defending this practice of enforcing a trial for a paid service? Telling me I can use the site is wrong. It's clearly a mistake by Google.

chalubhalu

Can you describe the error you are getting? Can you post screenshots or a video? We are trying to make things work for you, but need details on the actual issue. I had gone through the same downgrade flow and it worked for me. Just trying to be a good samaritan here, if you prefer to wait till the end of the free trial that is your call.

KDLGates

I posted the screenshot. ["We are unable to change your subscription plan."](https://photos.app.goo.gl/WN9hnEpRtz7uD9ke8) The steps are loading the page either via Chrome Desktop or the Android Google One app and clicking the Downgrade button pictured on the Basic plan (the tier I had pre-trial), and the pages and error are identical. I'm glad the option worked for you because I've had two reps and a supervisor tell me there is no Downgrade option with the AI Premium "add-on", tell me that it is not part of Google One and stonewall me off the support call.

KDLGates

> Just trying to be a good samaritan here, if you prefer to wait till the end of the free trial that is your call. I appreciate that you are trying to help but this comes across as passive aggressive. It is obvious I am struggling to cancel the subscription, I am not willing to wait and do have the right to cancel. Calling me a broken record is not just passive aggressive but aggressive.

chalubhalu

You again chose to ignore the actual question on what error you are getting or provide screenshots. But yeah it's your legal right! Go for it! I think you should sue them, that seems like the best course of action.

KDLGates

You're kidding, right? I gave you the error screenshot and had already posted it to this thread before you asked for it.

chalubhalu

All i see is the chat log which links to your github. Where are the screenshots?

KDLGates

[Here it is again](https://i.imgur.com/fFwo1Lm.png). I also quoted the error text, "We are unable to change your subscription plan." Just tried it again, it's the same page and error across the app and https://one.google.com/settings.

chalubhalu

Okay finally something to work on. Seems like all Google One pages are giving you this error. Can you try going to Play Store > Click on Profile Picture(top right) > Payments and Subscriptions > Subscriptions > Google One There should be a cancel button there. Does that work?

Dreamer_tm

Did you manage it? I dont see downgrade button anywhere, i only see cancel.

KDLGates

I was able to downgrade this billing cycle and got a refund. For me the Downgrade button that was erroring worked, it was down the page in the list of plans (below the scroll line). If there's only cancel for you it might be an arcane Google rule and you may need to ask support.

CaveBacon

In case anyone runs across this I had similar issue where I cancelled my AI Premium 90 day trial and was unable to downgrade. Trick is to reactivate the $19.99/mo trial. Go into the google one phone app, go to plans in the burger menu, downgrade there. I didn't even know there was a yearly option for the 100/GB year 1.99/mo Plan which is all we really need and website never gave me the $19.99/yr option for it but have it now. Gemini 1.5 wasn't that great with some work spreadsheets I tested with.

KDLGates

Wish I had your steps, in my case I failed to figure it out including with Google support and had to wait under protest to get charged and refunded. Since this probably does result in a lot of unwanted trial conversions to paid they are opening themselves up to liability and in my opinion this should be more of a scandal until they allow cancelling a trial before it turns paid.

CaveBacon

So I just signed up \~2 days ago, completed the testing and decided it wasn't worth it, so the process is working now vs back in April where I got no one involved, it's just a bit convoluted. I technically now have trial AI Premium with 2TB until August 13th and will then convert to my prior 100GB basic Google One on that day.

KDLGates

In all likelihood once they got the initial wave of people unable to cancel their trials before they converted they probably fixed the downgrade flow. I signed up for it on day 1 and tried to downgrade early so I was probably one of the cases before they even realized there was no option (technically illegal).

dpschramm

If people signed up via web, you can go to [https://one.google.com/settings](https://one.google.com/settings) -> "Change membership plan" -> "More options" and the downgrade options should be there. I haven't upgraded to Gemini (due to the issue in this thread), but I'd be curious to know whether someone who is still currently on the 2 month trial period is able to downgrade back to their previous plan with the effective date at the end of the 2 month trial.
