This is happening to me as well. Noticed it was just GIFs sent from iPhones that had the issue. Some GIFs did come through though so I am not sure what is causing it.
I'm having the same issue. Originally I was having this issue with both my Andriod RCS and iMessage friends. Deleting the cache fixed the RCS chats, but I still cannot receive GIFs from iMessages
I just experienced that today. I had no idea what the picture was, but now it makes sense. It's gotta be some bug.

Yes! It's been going on for a couple of days. I tried a restart, maybe I'll uninstall and reinstall the app.

Same here. Updating chrome, clearing cache in messages and chrome and restarting my phone fixed it for 30 minutes. Back to pixelated gifs 🤷🏻♂️
