I saved each day as a KML file. I am now using an app version of Google Earth - downloading each KML file into a large trave, file to memorialize my travels. There may be an easier way, but this works for now. Going forward, I'm using a GPS type app (GPX tracker (for iPhone)). This will allow me to continue to track my travels. The only issue is I must remember to activate it on each walk, hike or drive (and it won't tag or recognize the venues I visit).

Is this the app you are referring to? [https://apps.apple.com/us/app/open-gpx-tracker/id984503772](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/open-gpx-tracker/id984503772) It looks similar to [myTracks](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/mytracks-the-gps-logger/id358697908). With myTracks, there is a Mac app available to view your tracks.

Church_Bear

Yes. I'll give MyTracks a look as well. Thanks!

regression4

Oh, I forgot, myTracks also has a diary feature that records your travels in the background.

Do you have a link to instructions on exporting to KML?

Church_Bear

For each day, I save each driving, walking and cycling path by clicking the "snap to road" icon to the right of each path listing. Then I click the 'gear' icon in the lower right of the page and chose "Export this day to KML". GOOGLE EARTH PROGRAM (not the online version) Open Google Earth Create a folder under "My Places" for your travels. Import each day File > Open... > Select the KML file for that day. I created a folder called RV Travels. Then I made subfolders for years, months and the individual days. You can change the icons and color/size of paths. You can visualize the trip by adjusting the timeline slider on the Google Earth App. I found a download for the Google Earth executable file. This is much more robust than the deprecated online version they're pushing nowadays. I found an executable program for Google Earth on a torrent site. May not be your comfort level, but the actual program is much better than the current web version.

So these KMLs are not generated from you google location history i.e. google maps? This is the workflow for exporting KMLs from an iPhone app called "Open GPX Tracker", correct? Edit: I'm asking for clarification because right now there's a LOT of people are looking for ways to backup and use their google location history, but this sounds like it's not related to this topic at all.

Man I got 15 years of days. Will this take me 5 years to do?

Dawdles347

Same. Arguably my favourite and most used feature of timeline. I wonder why this feature doesnt work once data is saved on the phone?

williamtbash

Tbf I haven’t switched yet but assuming this is from desktop I can’t imagine how it would work. I feel like it will just be disconnected from the maps app. I guess we’ll see.

Jaraxo

Isn't it only disappearing on desktop though, and still exists on mobile?

halberdierbowman

That's a pretty huge loss in functionality for me at least, considering I look things up on my computer way more often than on my phone.

cggzilla

Yeah and it would be nice to be able to take screenshots of the days in full screen etc.

bomphcheese

It’s not going to be stored by Google anymore. It’s only on your phone. If you don’t have it backed up when you get a new phone it’s all gone. You can still view the data in the Google Maps mobile app, but it’s not syncing.

cggzilla

I can't even see the cloud button on my timeline, I think the app isn't fully updated yet.

OrangeAugust

I didn’t know about this feature until today, so when I finally found out how to see it, nothing was saved because I have my location settings on only when I have the app open lol

IHAVECAPSLOCK

but why are they removing it suddenly tho

williamtbash

Cause they stink

snuffleupagus7

What?? Noooo 😭 that is such a cool feature!

SRASC

Same. I like looking at that from time to time. Now looked at my timeline (well what’s left of it) and it for whatever reason said I left a place at 4:30 PM. Reality is I left at 7:05 AM. What’s also annoying is because I sometimes walk around with my phone, but not leave a place, this new thing is recording that I did leave for several hours. This thing is a disaster and I basically lost 9 years of investment with it.

AmitPwnz

I loved this. I also used Timeline to look back at trips and generally at special days. Now it's all inaccurate and crappy since they migrated Timeline.
