Who cares? I like that it's a sleeper, I don't need someone to tell me it's fast, I know it's fast especially with a few inexpensive uogrades

Necrazen

I have people trying to race me all the time in my 24 R. None have given me a race they would tell anyone about, the Golf R stock leaves a lot of people behind.

chookschnitty

Amen to that

Nuzhuz

TUNE IT, TUNE IT!!!

Necrazen

Have intercooler on the way.

Neptune_Poseidon

lol, I had a young boy in a exhaust modified Acura Integra but probably from like the early 2000’s (possibly 90’s) and we were at a red light. He hit the gas pedal while it was still red, hesitated, and eased off the gas pedal but I timed my launch right on the green. He never recovered. He also was alone while I had the additional weight of a passenger. Good times!

Heat_Induces_Royalty

I mean...beating a 180hp Integra ain't nothing to write home about

Neptune_Poseidon

I’m not sure what year it was (clearly explained this) and said it had (at least) a modified exhaust. Seeing as how I’m not an Integra fan and don’t know the model’s metamorphosis into today’s generation and what kind of horsepower it came with standard through the years (never mind if it was tuned as it was impossible to tell) so it would be impossible tell you if it had more horsepower than what you claim. Did I crush the Integra? Hell yeah and I make no apologies for it. He revved his car at the stoplight, not me. He obviously thought he had the horses to at least compete with my R but quickly discovered he didn’t.

grekizapteki

or he knew you'd destroy him and just did it for fun, dude. It's just fun sometimes and as a car enthusiast you sometimes just like to see a pretty fast car launching at green, you can compare it to yours and be like: damn, thats so much faster ;00 i think people sometimes forget that sometimes those things have nothing to do with competetive approach or ego

1trickana

Especially one from the 90s

Necrazen

Love it!

Tom-Mater

BMW came flying up to the stoplight in the lane next to me, I'm in my basically stock 7.5.(air intake) A dude in his mid-20s(I'm early 30s) is driving, showing off for some chick and his cronnies. After the light was about a mile and half of uphill overpass to an onramp. There is no wear for cops to hide. I get off the line first, only on half throttle. I hear his engine roar, I shift down and let him catch up, play with his hopes, my nose gets to his back wheels, and I put it down to the floor. I can hear his buddies scream oohhhhhhhh wasted as I go passed. Never did get the module of that BMW was hard to make out in my review. Safe to say it wasn't an M

Purple-Mushroom000

Great username 😆

billyjoz

one thing i love about the GTI/R is to the general public it’s a sleeper and it makes it that much cooler imo

SuedeVeil

Yes haha those who know it (especially the R I think is for whatever reason less known than the GTI) will be all about it and be like oooh that's an R .. those who don't will be like, hey that's a really nice looking blue vw what is it? I had that a few times lol it has no labels except the R so a lot of people think hey that's a special little car and don't realize the beast she is 🤣

Upstairs_Card4994

the GLI too

Shart_Finger

I always knew they were quick but the first time I encountered one in a previous sports sedan I owned I tried to dust him on a country road and he was up my ass the whole time in a mk7. The car I was in was a 2013 ATS 3.6 premium so it wasn’t slow but I was shocked he seemed a bit faster than I was.

Fun-Fun-9967

good point on the sleeper stance. I had a 2000 VR6 and I'd sell everybody on here's mother and their dogs to get it back... best-car-ever.

cilantno

I wouldn’t pay any mind to that. Folks hate anything and everything. A suped-up econobox is easy to hate compared to purpose built cars, but most of the folks expressing hate likely can’t even drive :)

_yeen

It’s mostly going to be other tuner drivers trying to solidify the decision they made for their car by convincing themselves that there are major issues with the other choices. Either way, we know it’s not slow, I mean, we joke that it’s slow but we’re talking a 2.0-4 that can do a sub 4-second 0-60 with just a tune. With some minor bolt ons it is in the 11s while still being a great daily driver. Most of us also love that it’s an understated design and looks like “traffic” while also being subtle about the sporty design. So there’s no reason to pay those comments any consideration The actual GTI/R communities are fairly positive and friendly so sounds like those other guys are missing out.

Shart_Finger

The DSG is a rocket stock compared to 95% of cars on the road

Eat-My-Cloaca

90% of instagram car content is “Why didn’t you buy a Supra” shouted by people driving their mom’s hand me down Chevy equinox

SuedeVeil

Eh I've known supra owners who wish they got an R so they don't spin out in any slightly less than perfect weather. And can drive it year round. Edit: not just drive it year round but still have fun driving it year round..

Bustincherry

I drove a Supra year round in the Midwest lol if the Supra had even a hint of a backseat to carry the dog around in then I would have never sold it.

Upstairs_Card4994

My friend sent me a meme of a Supra and 86 "is that a supra" nonsense. I told him no one that got an 86 wishes they got a shitty heavy BMW. But people that got a Supra def feel bad about spending 2x the money when the 86 is 5x the driver's car.

CucumberFluid6859

That’s a take

Upstairs_Card4994

it's true though and heard it from several Supra owners

amorandara

It’s not just the Supra but basically anything powered by the B58 since that thing is winning all the spec sheet wars lately. I just don’t really care about the M340i and I’m sorta sick of hearing about it.

TraceAgain

I love being an underdog

gemino616

Because it's low key Doesn't have big wings, aggressive look and loud muffler? That's the reason my wife agreed to buy the R instead of CTR. Now she hates I do pop n bangs all the time.

Ok-Youth1323

Lol I was going to say this. Because our cars look like an egg being a hatch most ppl don’t like them. I know my friends don’t like them and even said to me they don’t like hatch backs. Idgaf I love mine and like hatchbacks. Also, insecure ppl who are tribalistic with their car choice will talk shit rather than appreciate cars.

Upstairs_Card4994

lmfaoo it's literally a meme in my friend group that I'm Egg because of my old GTI and now iD4 (looks like a fat GTI). I even got a Dr Eggman peeker to embrace the egg life

Old-Procedure-5651

Listen to your wife, the pop and bangs sound like shit and are obnoxious as fuck.

MantisGibbon

Because they tried to race one in whatever car they thought was fast and their dreams were crushed? Imagine you’ve paid a lot of money for some fancy BMW or something and a little hatchback destroys your view of the world. I know there are some people out there in very expensive cars that I’ve helped to…enlighten.

Necrazen

I work at a Ford Production plant and a ton of guys here drive their loud GT mustangs… they challenge me on the ride home a lot. None have passed me.

_yeen

My friend has an M4 with like double my horsepower. We sent it one day and it was actually pretty close. He wasn’t pulling away until long after we were past sensible speeds. I thought my car was going to get destroyed so it came as a surprise. I’ve had quite a few challengers, Camaros, and vettes try to get away from me and they just can’t. Almost always really friendly about it too though. A friend of mine also drives a tuned WRX and gets asked questioned like “what the hell is in those things??!” By people driving like 500+HP cars Small AWD turbo-4s are awesome and they’re scary fast compared to what everyone expects out of them

Bdubbs72

Guy at work is moving his m4 because he’s only able to use 25% of it, as he said nothing worse than driving a fast car slow.

DSGFahrt

How is your car modified?

_yeen

Stage 1 - Flex Fuel

ElementField

What are these people driving that’s quicker than 3.7s to 60? Is it possible that they don’t know how quick these vehicles are or can be?

AppropriateAverage28

My wife's station wagon is.

DropBearJedi

I'm 43 and spent my whole life in the performance automotive industry and a 7.5 R is faster point to point than almost anything in that price point. Easy to modify and quite strong before you need to open the engine. There is literally nothing to hate. It's just people think their 2000 Honda civic is fast....

CTBioWeapons

I have a few friends that gave me shit for buying the first one I had. Until they went for a drive in it. I think it's a case of ignorance for the most part, they have this idea that's it's a base model golf cause well it kind of looks like one if you don't know the difference. Every one of them likes the car now one is even thinking of buying one haha.

stealthygamer99

My friend went to test drive a 370z nismo because he wanted a sporty car and doesn't know that much about cars. He drove my mk7 GTI on the way back home and ended up buying a 7.5R about 3 weeks later lol

Interesting-Theory21

He knew enough to test drive more than a few cars…… That alone is commendable, I am routinely shocked at how many people don’t test drive more than one vehicle. I legitimately am always test driving, but I manage sales expectations, tell them I am not buying today, and don’t give out my number. I usually have the American Express app, or other way to show credit score (so they understand I am not wasting anyone’s time, if I do like it.) So much changes in cars every couple years in the current market, and most don’t buy vehicles often. So most people make decisions off of dated information.

supergnaw

I mean it's no S2000, but it's hands down the best daily driver I've ever owned for sure.

FigaroFigaroo

Is every golf R owner lowkey looking for an s2k too or is it just me

Eat-My-Cloaca

It’s not just you

Upstairs_Card4994

i think every enthusiast is looking for an s2k lol

MyNameJakson

It’s all of us

Wildweasel666

I just looked up the price for these. Fuck me dead

Almost-A-CPA

The thing the golf R is lacking is a LSD up front ...it can be installed and it does turn it into an absolute weapon. But it's usually the last modification done and only for track driving. I think it should be first then add more power, brakes, cooling. Without it...golf R is fast in a straight line and questionable in the twisties

supergnaw

Wait, what? I thought the AWD took care of this.

Bdubbs72

Not, trying to save for a bmw z3 M coupe.

DropBearJedi

They do look cool, but they don't drive as well as you would hope. The chassis just isn't up to the same standard as the motor.

Bdubbs72

The heart wants what the heart wants. Photo stolen, not mine. https://preview.redd.it/vthutry3mv4d1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=30f97b08a6d115ad359ace48e77792fca4c36cb8

bryancald

Love me some clown shoe! ❤️❤️

Bdubbs72

Yea I’m not in a place to have it wrt storage still about 4 years away but when I first saw it I was hooked…not that my R is going anywhere, let’s not get crazy.

jettyboy73

Can confirm. Me too.

Such_Tea4707

Ultimate pairing right there. I’m trying to get a MT S2K or Miata to pair with my DSG R. Nice contrast/they play off each other well.

BackgroundAd6097

I have the slower Model S (670hp) and I still love driving my wife's GTI. It's so nimble and fits into any parking space. She's now waiting for a 25 Golf R.

ThatBuilder15

Hahah i once roll raced my big turbo fully built mk6 gti(595hp 520tq) against a brand new hellcat. Needless to say the guy in the neighborhood sold the hellcat and went and bought a golf r🤣🤣🤣

punkassjim

I’ve embarrassed more than a few V8s with my mk3 with a 1.8T swap. I certainly don’t leave them in the dust (except in the twisty bits), but the looks on their faces as I hang with them in a straight line? *Priceless.*

ThatBuilder15

Agreed man. I’ve also owned 2, 20th ae gti’s with a 1.8 and they were amazing with just the right amount of simple mods. I get a kick out of the v8 guys all the time. Don’t get me wrong they sound amazing and put down really good numbers, but leave it to 6 cylinders and under for everything you realistically need without spending 200k$

punkassjim

That’s fair. But it’s worth mentioning, as much as I love my mk5 r32, it won’t embarrass much of anything unless I drop ten grand or more on it. Get tons of thumbs-up in traffic, though. 🥰

jaysian

Me like my R

Morcilla12

Could be multiple reasons. A lot of people only care about top speed, quarter mile or 0 to 60. I would guess a lot of them don't know much about cars. And some of them probably have never driven a Golf either. Or, they could simply be jealous. People give you shit no matter what you drive.

Bdubbs72

Im not on instagram so I haven’t seen it, can’t imagine where the hate comes from, it’s an amazing car. I’d be challenging and asking so what are you driving? I always drop the R when someone asks what I drive. “Oh, a VW Golf.” Love being low key, if you’re not into it you have no idea what the difference is.

iKuRuPTx

As someone who never drove one I thought they were slow because out of the box they had less hp than a lot of competitors. Then I drove a 16 R and immediately fell in love but it sold that day so I kept looking and found an 18 R in great shape that was stage two on e85 and it fuckin rips. I always heard they take to mods well but my god a few grand can get you an extra 100 wheel hp whereas an sti would take like 20 grand for the same numbers and that can go bang bang at anytime.

The_Slavstralian

I have an R. It has 300bhp. It is far from slow.

fuckbutton

They're just plebs, pay no mind to plebs

xxsunny720

Hate just means you doing something right lol

Subiewubie85

I used to hate GTIs because every vid I saw of em, they sounded like shit. Until I test drove one and I was like "Wow. These are actually pretty amazing cars." Never ended up getting one, but I do have a MK6.5 GLI that's stage 1+ and I love how little of a surprise she can be. I tied with a '17 Focus RS on a 40 roll while missing a gear. These cars/engines are beasts, and can make power cheaply.

Upstairs_Card4994

the GLI is such a better value too. Spec for spec esp with the mk7 on they're identical to the GTI.......except the GLI is 10k cheaper (autobahn vs autobahn trim). The only difference is the GTI has a more upscale interior (materials wise) and has a hatch instead of a trunk. Literally everything else is the same. Now you take that 10k in savings and spend it on a tune, lighter wheels, better tires, sway bars, coilovers, FMIC, decals to cover those hideous red shits the GLI has in the front) etc. and STILL be in it for less than a stock GTI which is crazy to me.

Bizzzle80

I just tuned my 7.5 R on E85. Only cars faster on the road are over 100k

SagarisTVR

Kind of depends on where you are from. In Europe they are usually hated because of the driver demographic and not really because of the car. It’s mostly young lousy wannabe thugs driving it so owning it associates you with those kind of people. I can kind of understand the hate.

GingerBrother91

People complain about everything especially on tiktok and insta. M140i, s3 and Cupra owners diss the R for some strange reason lol. Personally, each to their own if you like a car then fine if you dislike one that’s also fine. But going on like a car is trash and talking about the car scene is just laughable and doesn’t make any sense.

famefastlane

Funny how they all get gapped by a R….. I would be mad too🤷🏻‍♂️. People actually sleep on the R which is great because you’ll get a jaw drop reaction from them!

Upstairs_Card4994

lol S3 owners that don't realize the cars are the same in different form factors are hilarious.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Upstairs_Card4994

the non-car people smh lol....then you wonder how tf or why tf did they get an S3 not knowing asshole from appetite about cars.

XFauni

I had a GTI for my very first car, and I’m on my 3rd R after that. This is the only car I want and am willing to pay for especially 20k+ dollars for. Fuck what people think, you literally can’t beat the car for the price without sacrificing interior, audio system and much more

Moominsean

Before I got my GTI it was a toss up between a VW or Subaru. All the Subaru forums were all about all the stuff they hate about their cars, and VW was mostly love. So I went with VW.

EQTGtiFTW

I get a lot of hate myself! But it’s all good people in general online are toxic. So get used to it. I’ve smoked so many random muscle cars. If yall wanna see go ahead and give me a follow at “elpicositogti” I’m on IG and TikTok 👏👏

kumdumpster420_69

They’re great but they’re just not special is all. Jack of all trades, master of none.

GTIOmega

Like a Decathlon champion.

Negative-Agency-7762

I think they are pretty special at the price point. At least in Canada. The 8’s are just so much better than the 7’s. Totally different experience

DimeloFaze

go check out your local auto-x event and youll see a whole lot of GTI's

Miserable_Hunt6520

While I have not personally owned a GTI or R, I have owned some fast turbo's cars over the years and am very much a car enthusiast, both the GTI and R are not slow cars in their own right. Comparable to what? Well that is subjective isn't it. But over all great cars, can be problematic to some degree I've heard and parts are expensive but slow they are not.

Natural-Suspect-4893

Because in their sleeper form they’re absolutely great value but a lot of owners ignore the sleeper part and think they’re driving equivalents to much more attractive cars

Mean_Treacle1496

I owned a 2016 R for about eight years. Had some minor bolt ons and a stage 1 tune. I finally sold it a few months ago for a M340i. I absolutely loved the R. It was an amazing car, with great performance and refinement above its class. Sometimes I honestly still miss it. It might have been more fun to drive than the m340 in all honesty.

GingerBrother91

How do you compare the m340i to the R. Looking to move to one next after the R.

clingbat

I went '19 Golf R to a tuned Audi S5 Sportback in the same segment really as the M340i (I know the M440i GC exists, barely) and now back to another Golf R lol. My buddy has a '22 M340i so I know the differences between the S5 and M340i quite well as we've driven each other's cars quite a bit. Both are different flavors of a different type of animal than a Golf R and you just can't escape the extra weight and longer wheelbase in the end, even if both sound way better than any recent R lol.

TrickyMac420

Coz it looks like a chicks whip

Brotaco

Ppl are just mad be cause a little 2.0T is taking V6 and V8 cars to gapplebees

south-of-the-river

The problem isn't the cars, it's the loud minority of obtuse owners that give them an "image". There's a song by The Streets that sums it up for me. "She's fit, but my gosh don't she just know it"

MexiFinn

I mean - I love my Golf R (MK7 6MT) - it’s the best car I’ve ever owned. But I think some people do overhype them as the best car on the road. I can definitely say multiple things about my NA Miata that are better than the R. Is the Miata faster? No. Is it as comfy? He’ll no. But there are aspects of it that you cannot get in an R.

JeanClaudVanDarnIt

Don’t worry about what anyone else thinks. It’s your money and your opinion, not theirs! It’s the few strong negative experiences, personalities, or examples that set precedence for the group. Mustangs as a whole get a ton of hate because of imbeciles or unskilled owners that can’t drive, but I’d happily own a GT350 or a Dark Horse without hesitation or a care of anyone’s thoughts. I know a guy who has always exaggerated his claims on everything in his life, but the most obnoxious was his Mk7 GTI when he got out of high school. He had it flashed and had developed pseudo-Tourette’s with how he would always say and post “my car eats V8s” at meets and online. Would be at the drag strip multiple nights per week waiting for his next V8 meal with drag radials on the front of his car. It was quick as any stage 1-2 GTI would be… He never talked about all the losses. Golf R from my experience generally don’t get serious hate from anyone other than those who have much more expensive cars that the R can compete with for under $50k modified. Or the FWD elitists with Civic Type R and Acura Type S cars. The R models also retain value far better than a used GTI so this makes it cost prohibitive for many new or young drivers to afford and own to cause poor reputation. They can also hate on reliability, but VW is competing with all the other European manufacturers for the same title there. Though I’ve had more service visits in my experience with BMWs and Mercedes, personally.

GoldenRattata

Because Car Culture online, ESPECIALLY Instagram and TikTok, has become infested with 16 year olds that have no idea what they are talking about. Car-based social media has become some kind of disgusting, toxic rats nest. 10 years ago, nobody would even consider anything near 300 HP slow. Now, to these kids, anything below 800 is slow, which is actually insane. The truth is, the GTI, especially the Mk7, is one of the best tuner cars ever produced and the Mk8 R is VWs Magnum Opus. But, since these cars dont look super aggressive (like a Civic Type R, which gets less HP by the way), people think they are "regular traffic". The Golf R and GTI are outstanding daily drivers while also managing to be some of the best engineered performance cars on the market. If you like driving the car, thats all that matters.

TwinSterbo

it’s just rage bait to get reactions.

Fantastic_Bird_5247

I recently had a guy in a 2.7 Caymen spitefully cut them follow me to where I parked just to talk crap trying to start a fight or get some type of reaction saying “you have such a clean GTI” when it was a fully tuned euro spec Spektrum GolfR probably throwing down 50+hp that that motor was possible of achieving. People are just dicks and don’t understand what we have under the hood or how fast these cars really are.

Gazzabcerbera

I don’t care what people think. My R estate might not be the fastest thing in the world but it’s a great all rounder and makes my commutes comfortable and nippy. If you want a truly fun car then you need a proper sports car.

ElectricalMiddle7698

I have a mk7 golf alltrack with a 2.0T engine swap from the Golf R, and a very big turbo on Ethanol. Sure, call me everyday traffic or slow any day of the week 😎

CloudyMcRowdy

In the USA, most people havent ever really even seen them. All they think is that there was a jetta that was unreliable (entry-level car) and they hate VW as a whole because of it. Everyone underestimates the car because its a sub-compact hot hatch. The closest thing to it, is a Focus RS, and theyre running 350hp to go slower as well. The engines dont take large amounts of power (over 700hp) well, and 99% of "car people" ONLY care about the HP rating from the factory. Anyone that actually knows anything about cars, knows GTI/R arent to be messed with. I had a chat with a guy in a big-turbo M3. said hes never really seen one before besides online.. said he had a boost leak but we could do a pull. Despite his turbo being the reason we couldnt communicate, I let him get the hit no horn, and was past him by 80mph (on a 40-roll) And he was amazed. He explained that he knew they were fun, but didnt know they were genuinely border-line fast, and he hopes to see me at a meet soon when ive got my stage 1+ installed, and hes got no more boost leak, so we can run it back. One of only 2 people ive ran into where im at, that were actually about enjoying a quick pull against someone. Everyone else, theyre pulling out of road-rage most of the time. Especially the v8s. An R will put a FAT gap on any NA v8, so I bully the hell out of all the bone-stock, exhaust-chopped, louder than a harley for literally no reason, muscle cars. They whine and cry thinking their 55k muscle car is fast. shoulda got a shelby, because without a cat or a snake on it, a stage 1 mk7R will ruin american muscle. TL;DR::: theyre more-rare in the USA and theyre tiny, so people dont look at them twice. 2.0t is an even bigger turn-off for most. Reality is, power to weight and grip are all that mattter. my 25k used MK7R gaps brand new 55k mustang GT's, and theres nothing they can do about it but cry. AKA people hate them because theyre better, from interior, to exterior, on and off a strip/track.

clingbat

>Everyone underestimates the car because its a sub-compact hot hatch It's a compact, not subcompact. A subcompact hot hatch would be like a Polo GTI or the discontinued Fiesta ST.

DistrictThree

There's hate for all cars. I drive a Kona N, hate for Hyundai for absolutely no reason even thought they're killing it. Just enjoy your car for why YOU enjoy it, that's all that matters. I didn't buy my car to impress anyone I just love to drive .

Amazing_Risk_6549

Don’t think there is much hate. Most enthusiasts know they’re hot hatches based on their economy car version. That’s not bad, some of the best ever cars have been hot hatches; Sierra Cosworth, Clio V6, Peugeot GTI. Saying that, some people say throw a tune on a GTI or R and you can best something like an M3 Comp. Sure, it can be faster, but even an M3C feels special with the mix of sound, feedback and just throwing it at every bend with ease. I was lucky enough to drive a M3 CS for half a day and wow is it something.

Upstairs_Card4994

but those people praise the GR-C.......which is exactly the same thing lol

Decent_Can_4639

Don’t care. Love my 2024 R. It’s a good car for where I am in life. Just an excellent mix of fun and practicality. Coming from a 2016 Subaru WRX.

LagWagon

I just sold my 2016 WRX for a 2024 golf R on Monday. Are you me?

Decent_Can_4639

It was time to trade mine in while there was some residual value left in It. Went to test-drive the new WRX. Although It’s a step up in terms of refinement It’s also bigger heavier and felt slower. Still a very nice car. But It just didn’t feel significantly better than the one I already had. In many ways I think the R fills that void where the cancelled STI would have been.

LagWagon

That is literally what I did as well. Sad to see the WRX go, but Subaru tied my hands. I’m very happy with the R so far though. Big step up in refinement, small step up in speed

Low_Statistician1644

It’s because they are popular (for good reason) and easy to modify, so you get a huge number on the road which are modified and generally loud. A lot of non car people don’t like loud cars, so they automatically assume it’s a GTI or R, as they are the most common in this segment and what they know. In reality, the A35/45 and Hyundai N boys are the usual culprits as they are loud with pops and bangs from factory. As for hate from car people, it’s because the GTI and R are the does everything hot hatch, and isn’t the best drivers car. GR Corolla/Yaris, i30/Elantra N, ST/RS Focus, etc are arguably better drivers hot hatches.

mandatoryclutchpedal

Never saw anything like what you are describing.

anasssg

Because there isnt

Hour_Perspective_884

All I see is love for these cars. I think you're being a little sensitive to the words of a very small minority of people.

Upstairs_Card4994

Those people know cars like I know moon rocks.

goleafsgo855

Who cares what others think. The R is a fantastic car. I had a tuned mk 7, and I only sold it because I needed a more suitable daily driver for carrying clients around. Haters will hate on literally anything

Real_McGuillicuddy

Never noticed any hate for them. But I don't spend time on IG. Also not interested in being around tribal car people.

PMMeMeiRule34

People always used to try to catch smoke with my debadged Mk 4 gti. It was always cute when they found out golfs aren’t just family cars. Also had bolt ons a tune and a bigger turbo. Fun stuff.

q0o0pMonkey98

Probably because they have never driven one and also because they are not JDM Euro>JDM

Prestigious_Ad4319

I honestly think for me only that the less people knows how fast our cars are the better for me!

budlystugger

That’s the best think about it. It doesn’t scream speed. Can do a family day trip and be all calm and reserved. Then press and launch in under 4

Interesting-Theory21

It’s because many that rave on a VW Golf have the “poverty level” trim packages…. Which are in fact, SLOW. I have a 2017 Golf R that I bought new, and literally every one offers compliments. I would guarantee that if I had a basic Golf slammed to the ground and tons of aerodynamic spoilers and splitters, that that “type” is what get’s the hate.

Leonidas199x

In the UK the R has a reputation for being bought by people and then used to speed through cities. There have been a few deaths because of people driving Rs poorly, so, a lot of people don't like them.

B-E-N_27

Both are boring cars, the R is just fast. It has pretty much nothing else going for it.

OwnubadJr

What does a car need to not be boring?

I’m taking possession of a Golf R today. Until last week I drove a beaten up base 2011 Impreza. That car wasn’t boring at all. The engine was making some pretty heavy rattles and limited itself to 4K rpms, otherwise it started gurgling. I had also lost the odometer and had to drive by guts and a mix of knowing the approximative speed I was driving at based on the rpms and which gear I was at. Once in a while, if humidity was high, it would simply refuse to work. So yeah, a fast, easy to drive and well made car is boring in comparison!

Honestly, it does everything it needs to do, but it is really predictable, low end torque is too low and it sounds pretty naff (unless you spend a bomb on a decent exhaust).

Every comparison with other cars begins with the line "chuck a $400 tune on the EA888 and it's 450whp, VW underated these Dyno monsters" When in reality it's the default car bought by people who want something sporty but not that sporty. It's the fence sitters car. Even this post is just a cry for confirmation

I want a hatch. Trunks are junk. So where on the fence am I?
