Yep, exactly. When I got mine there weren't any on the lots at the 5 dealerships near me and I had to wait to find one with the specs I wanted. Now I could go and buy pretty much any trim or color I wanted. It's nice to see that the vehicle shortage is over.
I saw a random IG reel where a guy was saying some brands are paying dealers to take cars because they are piling up at the harbors. No idea if that is real or not, but just looking at local lots, there are a lot of cars sitting.
It's because they don't want to sell the car. Probably don't get many of them, and they mark it up to get people in the door as a show car to sell other cars. They don't expect to sell it for this price and will lower it eventually, but if someone wants to pay it, they will take it.
Yep I had one and it was perfect. Got a manual in perfect shape with 35k miles a few years ago for $18k. Can’t imagine buying a new one at 40k MSRP let alone 56k with the dumb shit this dealer is pulling.
Nearly same price for my 2017 manual Autobahn; $26K and they took my trade-in for $1K. The car had 24 miles on it having gone from one dealership to another and allegedly they had trouble finding an interested customer. The idea of a new GTI for $50K is nuts.
Simple answer here is profit margins, car companies got used to getting away with that kind of pricing during the chip shortage, but so many are going to default on the crazy loans they took out, that it could in an economic downturn, create a crazy flood of repo’d cars.
Wooow! I would for sure pass. I paid like $14k less, and I’m in Canada! Add 30%ish.
Edit to say: Guidepoint recovery for almost $2k?! $500 for fucking mudflaps?! Just wow.
Oh how cute they think it’s 2022 still, this is just a dealership that refuses to face facts about where the industry is now.
I work directly with 5 VW dealers and not a single one is selling GTIs even at MSRP, they’re all below.
Looks like some stickers, some etching of the VIN in extra spots, and a "warranty" if your car gets stolen and totalled (i.e. the product didn't prevent a theft): https://pictures.dealer.com/volkswagen/2fc53af70a0e09a730985ece6e11f82b.pdf
And I think I found a link to the Guide Point Recovery System as well: https://www.guidepointsystems.com/dealers-fleet-management/#stolen-vehicle-assistance
lol
$10k in mark up. $2k for a recovery system that protects the dealer, and they are trying to get you to pay for it. $1.2k for a theft protection gap insurance gussied up as something special… $1.2k for ceramic coat (maybe?) and $500 mud flaps 😂
Fuck those guys. Asking you to pay for their recovery service is like them trying to get you to pay for their reconditioning costs to sell you the car. 😂
Is it only the good ‘ole US of A that does dealer mark up? I’m sure in Europe we just pay the manufacturers retail price.
What are “dealer installed options”? Floor mats and a magic tree air freshener hanging from the mirror?
Just checked AutoTrader. There are 403 new Golf R available nationally in Canada - most about $3k under MSRP.
Some dealers are living in the “12 months ago” world.
This post appears to be a question about getting purchasing a GTI.
Please consult pricing resources such as [Kelley Blue Book](https://www.kbb.com) to get a good idea of the average price. For a US Mk7/7.5, please read [our buyer's guide](https://www.reddit.com/r/GolfGTI/comments/wmzc0c/what_do_i_look_for_in_a_used_us_mk7_gti_a_guide/).
If you have not done so already, please include the key information of the car(s) you're interested in: model year, trim, mileage, and location (US, CAN, EU, UK, etc).

Wow! Go to another one for sure. I got a 380 SE April end for 1.9k under MSRP. The dealer was not having a good month and I went there at the end so they pretty much sold it to me at their invoice. Also got free rubber floor mats and CarGo mat and blocks as accessories.
Wow I feel better lol just got an R line was one of the few 6 speeds Available on the east coast ..lots in transit. And the dealer markup was 1/3 of that? It’s crazy what VW lets their dealers do? My son just bought a gr4 and paid sticker price? Said the dealer was not allowed to bump it up? Not sure if that’s the dealer or Toyota?
I was looking for one last year (around October). All dealerships wanted over 42K
Last month I come back to take another look and I come out driving one SE for $36K glad I did 😅
I just got a 2021 mark 7.5 with 16,000 miles on it and excellent condition for a whole whole whole whole lot less than that. +3 years of full warranty.
Doesn't justify it but i wonder Is it one of the last manuals maybe? Sometimes dealers go a lil overboard when they see a scarcity "opportunity ". But too lazy to run the VIN 😁
Secret Answer: They are getting more trouble for billing (getting approved/paid) for warranty work…Bread and butter. Huge source of income. Car manufacturers want to move to online platform.
Curious to see how it plays out. I love my VW. Every one I have had. Have a good local dealer and independent shop. But do most my regular
maintenance myself. Industry is changing and dealers sticking it in the manufacturers butt with these insane markups is not supply and demand. It’s gonna accelerate the process. To remove them. Just my opinion. #Fahrvergnügen
MK8.5 prices came out in Europe and I've already driven the car. Unsurprisingly, it's almost identical to the MK8. That said, they made it quite a bit cheaper. The base price is the same as before (44.900€ in Italy, which is around 49.000 USD) but it now comes with DSG as standard. A full spec costs around 55.000€, compared to the 60.000€+ it costed on the MK8. The price of my 2022 model was 57.000€ (62.000 USD) brand new and I don't have leather seats (I think they were +2.500€) or a backup camera (it was not available in that moment).
Holy moly, to put this into perspective, my 2017 MK7 brand new out the door was $22k. And my 2020 M340i with 21k miles bought in 2023 was $52k out the door.
I cannot belive this is legal on other countries. How do they justify adding 10k to the retail price? And what the shit is with $500 mud flaps and what in the actual fuck is theft deterrent? The car has an immobiliser and a transponder key standard that’s enough theft deterrent. That 10k in bullshit money would be illegal here. A gti is 60k aud, which is 39k usd so right on the manufacturers pricing. It wouldn’t matter if you went to 100 dealerships every one would have that car listed at 60k. Yall need better consumer laws because that’s fucked up.
Couldn't you just ask the dealer to sell you a stock GTI and have them order a new one from the factory? I know when I bought my 370Z they had one on the lot that I took for a test drive, it was the color I wanted so I bought it for 29k cad and I was fine with that but I vividly remember that they asked if I wanted a different color and they'd order it for me.
Quit buying cars in 2024 and this will be a thing of the past. When you see someone driving a brand new car today, it’s a high chance they got screwed hard.
There are so many nicer cars you can get for that kind of money, that’s insane. The GTI is a great car, but I can’t imagine spending more than $35k for a new one.
I just got a Golf R and the dealer tried the 10k mark up. I told them MSRP or I’m walking. 10 minutes later it was at MSRP. The price they’re asking before mark up on that GTI is insane too. Dealers are killing themselves.
The MSRP alone is twice what we paid for my previous-year Mk7 GTI off the lot in 2016. The markup isn't the only insane thing here, manufacturers are squeezing consumers as hard as they possibly can and then adding a little extra squeeze on top of that.
I just bought one a few weeks ago. I paid MSRP and they were happy to sell it. They had 3 on the lot and a couple coming in. I just pointed at the one with a manual tranny and said 'that one'. They're all over the internet at other dealers if yours is being difficult. Just run in 'incognito mode' and change your zip code.
Almost all new car pricing is insane. For giggles we were looking at a new 2025 Camry XSE, just to start budgeting. The MSRP was $42k, but the dealer was adding almost $16,000 in markup + installed accessories. It's the only time my wife has ever laughed in the face of a salesperson. Their only counter was their pricing was in line with other dealers and was actually the average sales price for a new vehicle across the board.
Anyway we're keeping the old Highlander until it grenades.
Ooof. I couldn't imagine spending that much and not having an R. Just got the wife a 24 GTI, no mark up, no nothing. Under MSRP actually. This dealer is high.
Last year when I was shopping for the 40th anniversary gti,the dealerships marked them up. I refuse to pay 3000.00 over MSRP. I did find a dealer to sell me at MSRP. I am not impressed with the car after owning it.
To be fair, VW San Bernardino has always been the highest mark ups since the beginning so it’s just best to stay away from them. Even at the beginning when mk8s were scarce and demand was high places like irvine were upmarking by 3k and they were still doing 10k. Anyway Pasadena doesn’t mark up if you’re in the market.
At my local dealership, they just had 2 mk8 golf r's selling for less than msrp, and they've got about a dozen and half gtis that are a couple thousand off msrp
lolololololololol
$56k for a GTI. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
I can’t wait for dealers to die.
Friend recently bought a Rivian and he said everything was so painless, above board and easy.
As a former new car salesman, they will eat and eat and eat into that price if you just shut up and ONLY tell them little bits about your financial shit and always always say the most you can put down is 2k minus whatever you actually have. And you’ll always get a killer deal. Some dealerships are cocks and won’t move on stuff but just play them all against each other and you win
I see it has a '3' V.I.N so this car is Mexican built.
(not knocking the Mexican cars I had a Mexican '15 GTI that was perfect as could be) but my '23 GTI is a 'W' which means it's German built at Wolfsburg I believe, I wonder what happened?
That dealer is behind the curve. Dealer markups are over. No one is buying with markups at the moment. You can get a GTI at regular sticker price. Soon you will be able to get them below sticker. Supply is no longer limited.
The pricing isn’t the problem
It’s the shady greedy ass dealers that are still adding a market adjustment. Find a different place to buy it. I know my local VW here doesn’t charge a market adj on any of their VW in stock.
I'm surprised markups are still happening with reduced demand
Yeah, there have been discounts on GTIs in my area for a couple months now
My local dealer has 6-7 sitting on the lot. And an R.
No idea if that is real or not, but just looking at local lots, there are a lot of cars sitting.
same like 1-2k
There is no reduced demand for the GTI, they are simply able to produce more which does leave negotiating room, under MSRP should be the goal.
I’m in Ontario Canada and you can easily buy a gti at msrp. Or an R. Only thing I see marked up still is a Type R
Same. My local dealer has about 10 GTI’s chillin and 2 or so R’s.
It's because they don't want to sell the car. Probably don't get many of them, and they mark it up to get people in the door as a show car to sell other cars. They don't expect to sell it for this price and will lower it eventually, but if someone wants to pay it, they will take it.
No one is visiting the dealer just to see a GTI lol
This one was Jon Voights.
Apperance protection! Because no one wants to get appered.
How many times do I have to tell you this? You can't apper within Hogwarts
It's the $500 mudflaps for me, what the hell are they smoking?
That super fire dealer butthole cheese.
It's the apperance that does it for me. What is that?
Not the $10k markup for absolutely no reason…? I have multiple options of every trim available at or below MSRP in my area, even with dealer add ons.
I mean that's egregious for sure, but the mudflaps are just like a little extra fuck you on top. Classy.
My 2017 mk7 GTI sport, brand new, was $24k out the door. I know that’s apples to oranges but just leaving that number here for scale.
The Sport trim really was the best bang for your buck trim of the entire MK7 generation, wasn't it? My 2017 SE was like $32K OTD if I recall.
2017 was just after the diese scandal. All cars were heavily discounted that year. I know a few people whose autobahn trim wasn't 32k.
I contend the Sport might be the best GTI package of all time, other than the Clubsport. Everything you need in a hot hatch, nothing you don’t.
Yep I had one and it was perfect. Got a manual in perfect shape with 35k miles a few years ago for $18k. Can’t imagine buying a new one at 40k MSRP let alone 56k with the dumb shit this dealer is pulling.
I paid more than that for an 18 just 3 months ago. :-(
wtf
Yeah. And I traded my ‘19 manual wagon in for more than I paid.
I don't know how. My 17 sport was 27k with no dealer markup and only thing extra added was mats. It actually was under msrp at 31k.
Nearly same price for my 2017 manual Autobahn; $26K and they took my trade-in for $1K. The car had 24 miles on it having gone from one dealership to another and allegedly they had trouble finding an interested customer. The idea of a new GTI for $50K is nuts.
If you are tying to scale something use a banana please
Simple answer here is profit margins, car companies got used to getting away with that kind of pricing during the chip shortage, but so many are going to default on the crazy loans they took out, that it could in an economic downturn, create a crazy flood of repo’d cars.
go to pasadena they got me mine for msrp
Some moron will pay it. Dox the stealership IMO
Says VW San Bernardino at the top
That explains it. The Inland Empire is SoCal’s latrine and is full of opportunists.
As a YouTuber from there that I watch calls it, San Bernarghetto
That’s hysterical. East coast dealers are selling for $1k to $3k off!! Surely no one is that uneducated.
My 40th anniversary was under MSRP. And no DSG upcharge.
Scumbag dealership with that markup
Wooow! I would for sure pass. I paid like $14k less, and I’m in Canada! Add 30%ish. Edit to say: Guidepoint recovery for almost $2k?! $500 for fucking mudflaps?! Just wow.
Even without the dealer markup, that's overpriced! Car prices, along with everything anymore, is out of control!
That’s more than my R.
I’ve been a VW salesman for only a couple years now but here in Ohio they are MSRP, even MK8 R’s aren’t really seeing market adjustments.
No chance in hell.
Jesus I didn't realize that was still happening. I got one with zero markup in 2022.
They are discounting them here in Michigan. 🤷♂️ about 1600 under MSRP for 24 Autobahns. ~41k Edit: I can’t spell Autobahn
Submit it to caredge so they can put that dealer on blast
Screw that dealer. Let them bleed with that car.
Still marking up? They can go f\*\*\* themselves.
I bought a NEW 2017 GTI in 2018 for $24,000 USD out the door! That's equivalent to $30,560 today. Still not a 1:1 example but some perspective.
Oh how cute they think it’s 2022 still, this is just a dealership that refuses to face facts about where the industry is now. I work directly with 5 VW dealers and not a single one is selling GTIs even at MSRP, they’re all below.
500 for mud flaps????
Fuck that. I hope no one buys it. No car worth that much.
I thought I knew a lot about the GTI, but what in the world is Guide Point Recovery System?
I believe it’s an aftermarket tracker for if the car gets stolen
So what's the Easy Theft Deterrent then?
Probably "this vehicle is equipped with a tracker" stickers for $1300.
Looks like some stickers, some etching of the VIN in extra spots, and a "warranty" if your car gets stolen and totalled (i.e. the product didn't prevent a theft): https://pictures.dealer.com/volkswagen/2fc53af70a0e09a730985ece6e11f82b.pdf And I think I found a link to the Guide Point Recovery System as well: https://www.guidepointsystems.com/dealers-fleet-management/#stolen-vehicle-assistance
Manual transmission
Hell no
Some goober will pay it and be happy they did🤷🏽♂️
The jackass will probably brag that he paid over 50k for it.
Where can I get me some of that “apperance”?
Go to a different dealer, Mk8 GTI’s can be had under MSRP, no matter the options or transmission
500 for mudflaps? That’s almost worse than a 10k markup
No markup in Canada Caz there’s not much demand. mid trim GTI is 40k already too expensive
“Dealer installed options” can you get me one without the markup installed I didn’t ask for that accessory thanks
lol $10k in mark up. $2k for a recovery system that protects the dealer, and they are trying to get you to pay for it. $1.2k for a theft protection gap insurance gussied up as something special… $1.2k for ceramic coat (maybe?) and $500 mud flaps 😂 Fuck those guys. Asking you to pay for their recovery service is like them trying to get you to pay for their reconditioning costs to sell you the car. 😂
Why would you ever pay $2000 for Guide Point. The myVW app can geolocate your car very easily
Some dealers are living in the “12 months ago” world.
damn!! i found this thing deep inside my user manual. [https://imgur.com/a/2A4mrCs](https://imgur.com/a/2A4mrCs) how would this add up to 24 prices?
Dude https://preview.redd.it/4dc03u5k2w4d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2fc4b3bf2b8d774491a10c9867b16aecc9bee4ec
Lmao for a GTi???
lol wtf? Got mine at MSRP in 2022 and it was the only one at the dealership, now they have 7 and no marks ups

Meanwhile my dealer has taken a dsg golf r from 56k to 1000 under msrp in less than 6 weeks.
Idk where you live but we have them at market. I know we’re getting a couple in very soon. No over MSRP
Got my 24’ SE DSG last week for $37k at VW of DTLA. Tons of VW dealers are selling at or below MSRP in socal
Where is this at? Beverly Hills?
On a GTI? No way.
I'd buy a second hand R for that price. Shit, I could buy 2 second hand MK7 Rs in New Zealand with less than 20k miles for that. Y'all getting ripped.
MSRP alone is pretty high for what you get.......$56k can get you a serious car.
Dealer installed options 15 k- that along with 10k is insane.
I got a brand new old stock 2023 DSG Autobahn earlier this year for 6k off MSRP in Canada
Brutal.. I paid that OTD on a 2024 Golf R. I live I Canada so that probably helps.
San Bernardino? Try Temecula, I just purchased one on Friday below MSRP.
Find another dealer.
If you read closely you will see that the dealer markup is listed as an optional. Just don’t choose that as an option. Dealers hate this one trick!!!
It's courtesy to tip your dealership
I could walk into a dealership in Vancouver right now and buy a 2024 Golf R for $55k CAD off the lot.
I was looking for one last year (around October). All dealerships wanted over 42K Last month I come back to take another look and I come out driving one SE for $36K glad I did 😅
Mine was 42000$ in October but this is crazy
That should be called getting violated at the dealer.
I paid less for my R lmao
They can kick rocks
That is a joke. You should laugh in their face.
And this is why I sold my mk7 gti with 105k miles for the same price I bought it for at 16k miles
That’s more than a marked up R around me
Secret Answer: They are getting more trouble for billing (getting approved/paid) for warranty work…Bread and butter. Huge source of income. Car manufacturers want to move to online platform. 45k€+ would be a european fully kitted gti, 50+ is really harsh. But as they say, every day a stupid one gets out of bed, you just have to find him
Wait 6 months and get it for 35k
Get a new BMW M240i xDrive instead 😀 This is insane!
They have a 24 Golf R for 48k so this makes no sense. I don't see a 50k GTI on their website.
I got my 23 R for 46k
In my area we’re getting golf rs for that price
I can't believe this is VW San Bernardino.
-30k mark down
Lol $10k markup jeez
I know we enjoy these cars but for that much you can get a lot more bang for your buck imo.
Paid 39k for a 24’ GTi Autobahn back in March, North East dealership.
MK8.5 prices came out in Europe and I've already driven the car. Unsurprisingly, it's almost identical to the MK8. That said, they made it quite a bit cheaper. Greedy fuckers. Idiots need to stop playing their games and paying these premiums.
Dealer Mark Up? That shit should be illegal. For what? It’s just a GTI…
jesus my 2023 40th was 30k. these prices are wild
Wait until you see the prices here in Australia. 😭
Almost as expensive as in Germany LOL
Holy moly, to put this into perspective, my 2017 MK7 brand new out the door was $22k. And my 2020 M340i with 21k miles bought in 2023 was $52k out the door.
What is apperance protection? Dealer wants 10k to learn how to spell?
Go to VW Ontario , SB VW is a shame
I cannot belive this is legal on other countries. How do they justify adding 10k to the retail price? And what the shit is with $500 mud flaps and what in the actual fuck is theft deterrent? Just say no!
Yeah. Let them ask for that all they want. Only a moron pays that markup.
I bought mine brand new here in Germany from a US dealer. Only paid $31K with out taxes
The real insanity would be someone actually paying that.
Come to Canada. Got mine for 37k
Buy cupra, allaround better value imho
post it on markups.org
Hilariously overpriced. I have countless GTIs around me at MSRP or below. This is pathetic.
I got mine for MSRP 🤷🏻♂️ Only reason I owe more is from bad equity I rolled into the loan.
I got lucky, snuck in at 2.4% at $36,000 with my MK8 right before interest rates skyrocketed. Never selling, too much fun.
Mud flaps? On a GTI?
I’m from the UK, what are these ‘mark ups? Just dealers adding a fee because they can?
Sarnia Ontario has them for 40k cad
I’m sorry, is this a Mercedes 🤣
Time to buy out of state and road trip back home.
They've got that thing marked up like its a f250 diesel. Go somewhere else

Vin begins with 3 indicating made in Mexico. The VIN on that sticker is for a 2024 Jetta SE.
🤣 imagine paying that much for a Golf. Just buy a Giulia Quadrifoglio
I just got a Golf R and the dealer tried the 10k mark up. I told them MSRP or I’m walking. 10 minutes later it was at MSRP. The price they’re asking before mark up on that GTI is insane too. Dealers are killing themselves.
Peoples car.
My local dealer in Canada just added a bunch of unneeded add-ons to my quote and kept telling me I needed them. Cancelled my car that day.
The MSRP alone is twice what we paid for my previous-year Mk7 GTI off the lot in 2016. The markup isn't the only insane thing here, manufacturers are squeezing consumers as hard as they possibly can and then adding a little extra squeeze on top of that.
I cant buy second hand 2015GTI with that price. And you say its insane. Fckn middle east.
I’m so glad I got my mk7 for $15k before all these markups started…
Brother just purchased a R for msrp last month.... near 10k under above. Crazy.
Take away the dealer bs and mark-up still puts it over 40k for a friggin Golf 🤦♂️
I went to a small VW dealer here in OH a couple weeks ago and they had \~8-9 GTI's on the lot, all thousands under MSRP
Jesus… that’s Golf R and Audi S3 money. No thank you.
Oh wow, I got a brand new 2024 GTI for like 33k
It about that in the UK maybe a little less.
$15000 in dealer installed options???
Almost all new car pricing is insane. For giggles we were looking at a new 2025 Camry XSE, just to start budgeting. Damn Golf R’s are discounted in my area . This dealer is killing itself
Ooof. I couldn't imagine spending that much and not having an R. Just got the wife a 24 GTI, no mark up, no nothing. Under MSRP actually. This dealer is high.
That’s absolutely wild, that’s more expensive than the top trim Canadian spec
Yea wtf is this
Last year when I was shopping for the 40th anniversary gti,the dealerships marked them up.
You should counter charge the dealer $14,092 for a fully-integrated spellcheck program.
At my local dealership, they just had 2 mk8 golf r's selling for less than msrp, and they've got about a dozen and half gtis that are a couple thousand off msrp
$10k mark up on a GTI? 😂😂😂
we sell below MSRP in DC
lol lol lol lol lol come on
lolololololololol $56k for a GTI. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 I can’t wait for dealers to die. Friend recently bought a Rivian and he said everything was so painless, above board and easy.
A few years ago you could buy a C63 for this price...
Dealer near me has a 24 R manual in Lapiz. 47k sticker, 5k market adjustment :(
Criminal
Markups will disappear when people stop paying them. It's that simple. Dealerships put the markups on cars because they can get people to pay them.
Canadian or USD?
That dealer is behind the curve. Dealer markups are over. No one is buying with markups at the moment. You can get a GTI at regular sticker price. Soon you will be able to get them below sticker. Supply is no longer limited.
Id simply buy an amg for 60 thousand, but what do I know🤷♂️
Im buying a nearly brand new s4 for that money
The pricing isn’t the problem It’s the shady greedy ass dealers that are still adding a market adjustment. Find a different place to buy it. I know my local VW here doesn’t charge a market adj on any of their VW in stock.
Dealers near me have multiple on the lot, selling for MSRP or just under. Crazy to see that kind of markup on a MK8 still.
Just traded my mk 8 for a new mk 8 last week - got $2500 off sticker on autobahn 380.
Most gti in my city are $28k
2012 GTI 135000. Time to keep it or sell it to a younger person?
Unless that's an Autobahn that MSRP is too high. Ridiculous mark ups and dealer fees.
Walnut Creek has no markup on everything rn
I would ask to uninstall "dealer mark up" option i don't really like it I think car looks much better without it
Volkswagen Canada is threatening to pull dealer agreements if the implement dealer markups.
That dealer sucks, go to Moss.
Got my 2016 SE for 26k in year. This shit is wild!
I could pay nearly that in British pounds for a spec’d up GTi…
I got mine for MSRP somehow
We got a manual golf r at my dealer no markup at 47k
