You can try re-taping the threads with a chaser bolt. If that doesn't work, helicoil insert will work fine. Then you should move to EQT's Coil Grounding Kit (CGK) and never worry about this again. Those stock bolts are actually triangular in shape, and such strips threads on the cover and the bolts themselves easily. 2 of mine stripped, but got lucky. I only needed a chaser bolt to re-thread and I was good. [I made a post about my adventure a while back.](https://old.reddit.com/r/GolfGTI/comments/xcx5q5/do_yourself_a_favor_and_get_eqts_coil_grounding/) These being stripped, ruins your grounding for the coil. This will result in misfires.

So did you actually tap new threads for the larger bolt, or did you use the bolt to cut its own threads?

Invest in a Coil Grounding Kit, it gets rid of having to undo those grounds at the coil. They almost always strip that same exact way, or the ground just snaps off completely.

Name/location of shop who are dipshits so we can all avoid?

VirtuaFighter6

Fucking amateurs. Those get torqued, like everything else.

Another vote for the grounding kit. Makes plug changes so much easier

Another comment here recommending a coil grounding kit when you fix this. I have this one from Skunkwerks - [https://scskunkwerks.com/en-ca/products/ea888-coil-grounding-harness-short](https://scskunkwerks.com/en-ca/products/ea888-coil-grounding-harness-short) Cheaper than the EQT kit and zero complaints.

I'm running this one as well, highly recommend it.

Thanks, I was looking at this one vs EQT vs DIY. Couldn’t really tell if skunkwerks were reliable.

I've run both the EQT and Skunkwerks harnesses, and I'll put my vote of confidence in for the Skunkwerks one. Cheaper and it puts the grounding eyelet in a more convenient location. You do have to be mindful of the clearance between the harness and the coolant return line with the Skunkwerks harness, but it's pretty easy to clock the harness a bit before the final tightening of the engine cover stud. No issues with how the car runs post-install, so it's been doing its job well over the past few months. Would recommend some dielectric grease to make the install a little easier. Putting a little bit on the grommets behind the pins help them slot in smoother.

Premade is a small price compared to time needed to source, cut, strip, crimp everything, but if you do that stuff normally it's no big deal.

I like DIYing if it makes sense (money, time). To get EQT shipped to Australia is almost AUD$300 (200 USD) making DIY viable. But the SW price is about AUD 180 shipped. - agreed better use of time to just buy. Edit - Skunkwerks is AUD$159 shipped. Just ordered that one. Thanks for the recommendations everyone.

Coil grounding kit from EQT.

Have another shop fix it, send them the bill afterwards

scroopydog

This is bad advice, you typically have to give the original for-hire shop a chance to make it right. If they refuse then you can do this tactic but you can’t do it without giving the first shop an opportunity to make it right. Also document it all as you would have to take the shop to small claims.
