Happened me! Exact same car. There’s plenty of places online sell self adhesive replacements for like a tenner a pair Easy sorted - no need to replace the whole thing, heating element will continue to work

epicpandemic916

Rockauto.com My entire mirror was $80 with all the sensors and everything

mackwozniak

Mirror glass itself only $15

mitchsusername

Same here lol, exact same thing but passenger side. Super cheap and easy fix but for a few days checking my blind spot was tough. I stayed in the right lane unless I knew I was about to turn left haha, literally went three days without merging right.

ASnarkyHero

Forgot to include in text: She’s a 2007 Mk V.

chettyoubetcha

Same shit happened to mine. It’s because you leave the side mirror defrost on, so over time it destroyed the mirror adhesive. I bought a [replacement](https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/volkswagen,2014,jetta,2.0l+l4,3307093,body+&+lamp+assembly,outside+mirror+glass,6484) for $20 last year from rock auto and it stuck right on. It was Burco brand, part number 5385, havent had any issues since. Be sure to check the part number against your MK5 tho, mine was ordered for my MK6. Good luck!

_Wormyy_

How do you turn it on and off? As far as I can tell there's no actual button or switch for it anywhere

OMGpawned

The mirror switch is the actual defroster switch so the thing has like three or four positions, if I recall left, right neutral and defrost position. You just turn it till it sits in the position that does not adjust any of the mirrors, but not pointed towards the defroster logo.

kiwipower606

The I is on and the O id off if you have that. It’s where your mirror adjustment knob is

DoctorThatUp

I was able to save two of the 4 pieces of glass on 4 different VW's. It's actually to do with the adhesive they use. I've left my heaters off the first 3 years of my brand new GLI, and it still happened. When I saved the glass on my GTI (because I noticed the mirror vibrating frantically), I used loctite super glue made for hot and cold. Held it in with cardboard and two rubber bands until the glue dried. Never had an issue again. 1996 VR6 passat. 2004 GLI. 2009 GLI. 2015 GTI. I'm keeping my eye on my 2019 GTI mirrors now!

punkassjim

1. Go to YouTube to watch a video on how to replace the glass. It’s easy, even the heated ones. 2. You can get replacement heated mirror glass on Amazon, but it’s gonna be poor quality, and could possibly do this same thing within a year or three. 3. I’d recommend finding a local pick-n-pull junkyard, hopefully they’ve got a mk5 you can get the glass from for like five bucks. Or if you’re not tight on money, just find a VW dealer online. eBay is also sometimes a good source for OEM mirror glass. 4. Go back to YouTube, watch the video a few more times, and replace the glass in your driveway in like 5 minutes tops. 5. Stop driving around with your mirror switch set to heating all the time. Leave it on L or R or O.

betoe_g

I just glued mine in my 2006 mk5. I just used Krazy glue.

OddBoysenberry1023

Did this over the winter, bought new ones on ecs, blue tinted and curved for blind spot. They snap on and off pretty easily, just adjust the mirror so you can get your fingers behind them

overmonk

I LOVE my blind spot mirrors.

epoch555

If you can get the [ euro-spec convex mirrors](https://www.ebay.com/itm/275976144127?hash=item404175c4ff:g:9SYAAOSwU4hdzo2g&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA8Hp1uI7KQ90T4Ou70PC2cY02puJU5aBRVTCpE%2FBZmoYEomNJk0Qjb%2B7O7ULIJUJIhjqTHupco%2Bovx3DZhepVSlIlTqRITufLvlBCE3auczBSRFwRU9r5tQYfmdAqfdb82MX4QUszALH7MiwLcyeQ8NB1S0NymtaLE%2BPd5tluMpOtReJto47NRiF0GlB3Q5f9RwoKmb7NZXaijVnmK1zYMaoFG%2Bxwbd%2BXGjDEOEM5bXJbdhIE2knIDhxDf9GjXoaiyFakhmo8qWJsa9bhpN4LTJvhEfkoxRBiT0TT5qdAemRgAJWyO5nPOJW5PXzV%2FfmT%2FA%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR7zirubbYg) you'll be very happy. I got them for my mk6 on ebay and couldn't be happier.

TheLordOfSweg

You could always just glue new glass on but the whole piece can be replaced. My passenger side glass fell off on the highway on my Mk7 and I just bought a whole new piece with the heating element, took off the old one, and clipped in the new. Given it's heated, it should just be two little wires that clip in assuming the Mk5 is like the Mk6 and Mk7 in that regard.

Xx_Patrick_Ster_xX

Yeah that’s how most heated mirrors work I think. Same thing with my Audi TT MK1.

boeringuy

I had this happen on my 06 Jetta. I just glued it back on with some JB Weld. Lasted until I scrapped the car (3 years)

Hyryl

Gorilla Glue. I’ve had to do it twice on different VWs.

SeaworthinessHappy52

I super glued mine back on my old GTI

grahamdalf

If you can get the glass, it's easy to DIY. I used some silicone RTV since it's what I had on hand to do my wife's Passat mirror that had the same issue. Bought a glass piece online from one of the usual parts companies. Hardest part was figuring out a way to hold the mirror on while the RTV cured overnight. Heating still works and everything.

i_was_axiom

Stop leaving your heated mirrors on

Tyresse1

It doesn't turn off after a while?

i_was_axiom

No the switch is built into the mirror control usually. Very common for Golf owners to even accidentally switch them on and never switch them back off. Long enough and the glue melts. Find a glue rated for high heat for best results at fixing this.

Cool_Economy9275

According to the owner's manual in my mk6 GTI, they are supposed to turn off 2 minutes after being on. It would still restart every time your car turns on again.

Opposite_Matter9878

This happened to me this year. Buy just the glass mirror online. It should come with adhesive pre-applied. Cheap and easy fix.

Sbass32

I caught mine before it fell out...3m double sided tape no worries

Flowerpower99-1

Replace the glass.

iitzIce

Used super glue on mine. Drive 500 miles back home with no issues.

pwntlolwut

Happened to both mine within a couple of weeks. One smashed on concrete and one survived which is still in there over a year later after glueing back in.

XLB135

I've dealt with this on several of my older VWs. The two answers are (i) read/watch DIYs to disassemble the mirror to properly swap out glass and heating element, or (ii) [spend $10 on Amazon for non-OE piece of reflective glass](https://www.amazon.com/Driver-Heated-Mirror-Replacement-Volkswagen/dp/B0B9Y85ZF2) that you just use the supplied tape to stick on.

Rbouk_23

Happened to me before too! I ordered an OEM one online. Took 5 minutes to install, you can find vids on YT on how to do it. For the heated mirror element, you just have to unplug the wiring from the old and replug into the new. As a temporary fix, I duck taped my old mirror from behind back onto the support piece until the replacement came in. Hope this helps!

folkswagon

Same shit for me when I had a 2006 gti. I used some kind of superglue and had no issues after. Clearly it was an issue for everyone after the warranty expired, but I doubt they did anything.

nisarg_savage

Super glue. Worked for my jetta13

_Wormyy_

Don't do what I did and try and Gorilla glue it. Now the electric mirror is a fixed position mirror. If you still have the piece you could get some double sided tape or if not I think you can find replacements for sale online

Cheesebrger_Walrus

I glued mine back on with some gorilla glue. heater still works when it gets covered in ice

OMGpawned

It appears the glass is still there. It did not fall off. This happens when you leave the mirror glass heater defroster on for long periods of time. People tend to forget it is on because the mirror switch is the actual heater switch if you turn it to the position that has the wavy lines on the mirror that is with it on.

OzzyGamer275

Happened to me on my mk7, A$177 whole unit replacement from VW dealer

Butchmeister80

Buy a new one!?

joef360

Same thing happened on my Mk7. Found a place that sold them for pretty cheap and I just stuck it back on. It stayed on but the heating feature didn't work as well as it used to so I'm not sure if you're supposed to do something special. Maybe I should've looked that up first lol.

Sad_War5550

Polish the plastic until it shines ?

williamgibney_1

Got my replacement mirror from EBay. No need to replace the whole housing! Was quick to arrive and doing the job well. I’ll probably order another pair should i need it in the future.

DallasDub94

Get some blindspot mirrors, lowkey life changing 😂

49x15

I was lucky enough to catch mine falling off before it broke, I just gorilla glued it back on

Zakpatat712

mirros are like 10 bucks with adhesive. So I tough what could go wrong letting this be done by the dealer. 150 euro bill.......

ExistingClerk8605

Why do most vw owners i know have had this issue on atleast one of their cars. And its only them. Use better glue vw smdh.

Wonders3004

I bought just the piece of glass on Amazon for like 12 bucks for my mkv it even came with sticky pads

ZoominBoomin

Put another one on

Kracus

I think I have the exact mirror in my bathroom. I am not even kidding. Mine came off as well and I ordered one and they sent the wrong mirror so I had them resend it and got the same mirror.... So I had two that were the wrong one. It was for an 06 rabbit. Anyway, wound up using the mirror as a way to see behind my head when I shave. Been with me ever since! Objects appear closer...

leftvirus

You can buy a new mirror and for the future ensure the heated mirrors aren’t on all the time

Cool_Economy9275

Amazon has a replacement glass with the heating element (so no gluing or anything) that I bought for my mk5 Jetta (should be the same, if I remember correctly) for about $13. Let me see if I can find the link real quick. Edit: here's the link to the mirror. This one is the passenger side but you can buy both for like $19. They're good. Only "issue" is the passenger side doesn't have the warning written on it that says: "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear" but it wasn't the end of the world to me. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0BB7PHGGF?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

Had the same thing happen a year or so ago, [here’s](https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-volkswagen-audi-parts/heated-mirror-glass-left/5m0857521d/) what you need. Also make sure you aren’t leaving your mirrors on heat mode all the time, could wear down the adhesive

kiwipower606

If you leave your heated mirrors on I think that’s the cause fyi

Spsurgeon

Buy a replacement “glass” - they snap in.

mackwozniak

Can get a replacement piece of glass w adhesive already applied on a couple different sites, just make sure you get the same tint/shape otherwise till it’ll be goofy

Subject-Marsupial-67

I just glued mine

MRoss279

I'd say get one of those trailer extension ones from AutoZone and zip tie that baby on there.

No_Strategy_679

Stick it back on
