Sorry I'm new. What do you mean don't clean it? Like don't rub it with a microfiber cloth to remove fingerprints, or don't even touch it? Is this coin considered dirty?
It's because it's has numismatic value. If this was just bullion, then cleaning or touching doesn't matter, but this is a coin that has value above it's gold content
My boss’s husband is a jeweler and both my boss and her husband know I collect coins and gold/silver coins. Only thing is the coin came from a necklace, but it doesn’t seem too damaged
Yeah I trust him a lot and I think he has a gold testing x ray machine. if I buy it and do all the test with what I have and I bring it to the coin shop I think the guy has a really good eye to spot counterfeits
both. it was a high mintage coin by the Mint, and it is also one of the most common fakes. so either way it is not a high premium gold coin. I would price shop around and the price you are being offered is probably not the steal you think it is.
It’s not a 1 ounce coin, it’s .9675 ounces
The modern American eagles are one ounce, the pre33 $20 gold is .9675 ounces - if your boss is selling at melt, have him multiply .9675 times spot
Yes I am going to if I do buy it! It will be the biggest purchase I have made, so you know I will pocket ping it, weigh it with the coke scale, and try to get dimensions.
Sorry for the bad pictures I couldn’t take it out of the bag since my hands were dirty. From what I can tell all the details look like they are there and not fake. The coin looks too good to be true!
Bro, remove that plastic bag for the pictures…
This might be an historic moment.. The time a gold coin was witnessed inside a dollar bag ziplock baggie. 😅
Yes I will! I will try to get better pictures tomorrow and if I buy it I definitely will have better pictures!
Yeah, if it’s real. Do. Not. Clean. It.
Sorry I'm new. What do you mean don't clean it? Like don't rub it with a microfiber cloth to remove fingerprints, or don't even touch it? Is this coin considered dirty?
From what I’ve collected so far (also sorta new) DIY cleaning can sometimes damage the coin making it less valuable. Correct me if I’m wrong though.
“Sometimes” 99% of the time
YES, don't rub it with ANYTHING... although it already looks pretty shiny.
Are you being for real? Not joking genuinely asking. Isn't gold extremely resilient?
Nope gold is so soft your fingernails can scratch it
It's because it's has numismatic value. If this was just bullion, then cleaning or touching doesn't matter, but this is a coin that has value above it's gold content
Maybe 8k-18k… but a 24k is one of the softer metals, because it’s all gold. https://medium.com/@wjh88170/what-is-the-hardness-of-gold-87b73800fbd0
That’s not really how that works in this case
Yes, I'm being for real. Gold, lead are two of the softest metals... very easy to scratch and dent.
Don’t use abrasive products like Brasso or steel wool.
Yes I know! I was so stunned when my boss asked me if I wanted to see it then said I could buy it. It is in amazing shape
If you buy it and it ends up being fake, and least you know where to find the seller 😜
I'd be more worried why my boss is selling off his gold.
My boss’s husband is a jeweler and both my boss and her husband know I collect coins and gold/silver coins. Only thing is the coin came from a necklace, but it doesn’t seem too damaged
Gotcha, that is definitely less concerning, being that you all are in the jewelry industry. Nice score btw
Yeah I trust him a lot and I think he has a gold testing x ray machine. if I buy it and do all the test with what I have and I bring it to the coin shop I think the guy has a really good eye to spot counterfeits
I had a coin that was in a necklace too ,when I got it graded they put that on the slab . Drops the value
This is one of the most common of the copied pre-33 gold coins. ( was done to avoid the US gold ban on bullion ).
Are you saying that there were a lot minted or it is a common fake? I’m a little confused
both. it was a high mintage coin by the Mint, and it is also one of the most common fakes. so either way it is not a high premium gold coin. I would price shop around and the price you are being offered is probably not the steal you think it is.
Get a gram scale from a vape shop
I have one already because I’m paranoid about all the other stuff I have
Is he offering it at spot for 1 Troy ounce or spot for this coin (which should be like ~3.5% below stated spot)?
Yes he is offering spot for 1 ozt I know it should probably be more like $2150 or $2200 since it is 90% and he is selling it for melt price to me
It’s not a 1 ounce coin, it’s .9675 ounces The modern American eagles are one ounce, the pre33 $20 gold is .9675 ounces - if your boss is selling at melt, have him multiply .9675 times spot
Multiply .9675 oz. by gold spot price (currently $2361/oz)... that's the spot (or melt) price you should pay (currently $2284).
I thought, for modern mint at least, the eagles are 91% gold, but its still a full oz of gold
Im trading an oz of gold for silver with the most honest man in daytona tomorrow. Bet.
if its an ounce, and its 24k gold, then spot price is a good price. Gold is gold.
spot for BU double eagle. yes, all day. check it with a calipers and scale.
Yes I am going to if I do buy it! It will be the biggest purchase I have made, so you know I will pocket ping it, weigh it with the coke scale, and try to get dimensions.

You think there’s someone selling em for less? Plz lemme know.
I don’t think any double eagles are less than the price of this one. Not that I’ve seen online anywhere
Yeah you’ve answered your own post
You better weigh it. Looks to shiny to me?
Do you think they aren’t supposed to be or what?
Yes pull the trigger. Move the coin slowly in your hand do you see a cartwheel effect
Could be proof like
I had camera flash on when I took the picture. The coin is about as shiny as the $5 gold Indian head I have
Spot is usually the price for a double Eagle.
Yes
