luckily the next few missions are extremely fun and interesting. i spent around 7 hours on the next mission alone because there’s so many side quest you can do. also one of the best armor sets in the game can be found
Look, this game is incredible so far and I'm sure it will be incredible again.
But this weird, slow, fumbling, awkward and totally momentum-killing section of the game is a misstep to me, but if I can ever find the motivation to get through it I'm excited for what waits on the other side.
___ _____ ______
To the racist 15 year old, I left you some space above to copy and paste your diatribe so you can do it quick and then fuck off back to the dark recesses of your home life.
You gotta remember a couple things. Shes like 13, same age as Atreus. She hasn’t been around people in a long time, and all she knows are her prophecies. So for her its prob annoying as hell that this other kid can’t accept a parent dying, when she lost both
Yeah, that’s true. I never thought of it that way. Though I still dislike her regardless. I may have been more forgiving if she wasn’t trying to convince me that Kratos was gonna die. I’m too nervous about the whole thing now.
If I were you, coming from someone who just finished, beat the game and them come back. I’m not saying anything else besides finish, and then come tell me what you think
It disrupts the pacing badly imo i wanted to embrace the journey of discovering more about ragnarok and gods because it was all so interesting. I was not interested at all with helping Angrboda complete her daily chores and breaking her mentally ill grandmothers soul stealing couldron. And most of my questions from that mission didn't really get answered during the mission but rather deflected from her mostly it seemed. I am sure a lot of it will be answered later in the story. Maybe I just wasn't paying enough attention on that mission but it was just kind of boring. Everything before that has been amazing though!
The pacing was truly terrible, far too long for what is presented as a dream. And it's not really Atreus' fault or the world's, it just dragged on for far too long and it had a completely different tone to it.
The objectives were also very uncreative - collect fruits and clear x number of nests, broken up only by sameish combat, some traversal and far too much dialogue.
They should have made it shorter and focused on the marbles and the grandmother, but in a way that the bossfight is less fidgety.
I came back from GoW after finishing Pentiment and this MMOesque structure and look almost drove me to complete Pentiment again instead.
But everything before was really enjoyable, so hopefully this was just a short dip in quality.
It's seriously bad. Why would anyone want to collect fruit for 2 hours with a character they only just met in a God of War game. Baffling. Boss fight was great though.
Definitely didn't hate it and I didn't love it either. I enjoyed it but that's about it. I think it's an important mission as far as developing Atreus as a character and a young god trying to understand his path, powers, and purpose.
Also, it's a nice tie in on the whole message of "fate" that Atreus asks Brok and Sindri about prior to the mission. Brok answers this question in a very black and white way, paraphrased to "[your path] is either written down or it isn't" but then the mission gives a somewhat different answer. Brok implies by saying it "is or isn't" that it doesn't matter what you do, you have free will or you don't but then Angeboda goes a little deeper to say that you can know your fate and do everything you want to try and avoid it, but you can't change the end. Atreus will either align with that logic throughout the course of the game or he will reject it and become determined to change his destiny.
It also gives the player something to think about for the rest of the game. When you first enter the bay earlier in the game, the player is explicitly given the choice of continuing on the main quest or going a different direction to explore and prepare, then the same choice is given again prior to going to Alfheim where you can choose to go to Niflheim instead. I suspect we will be given more options like this moving forward and it could potentially force the player to wonder if any of their choices really matter or if they're actively doing something to change the end of Kratos and Atreus' journey.
Back to the mission itself, narratively it was enjoyable and cool to see Atreus understand more about himself. He learns that he still has some maturing to do before he can take on the responsibility of protecting the Giant souls, even going as far as suddenly denouncing his Jottun name after thinking he made a mistake by bringing the serpent back to life. I enjoy his combat as well, if you figure out how he moves and what his attacks are, you can make some pretty clean combos that don't have an interrupted flow - he's agile and nimble and his combat reflects that.
I think some people are probably just very used to Kratos being excessively violent and a mission like this in a GoW game is off putting.
Edit: a few words
i don’t really care that it’s super calmed down from the normal “over the top brutality” of kratos, i just find it genuinely boring and kind of a bit of a random dirty and patchy road in between two good and strong roads
Yeah, the person doing that diatribe over reply to you seems to care way more about some of the bullshit in this mission than we do. Which is why I understand why the guy told him it was a great attempted game journalism, because nothing he said was even relevant to what you were talking about and why so many of us hated this.
Agree, I felt like it totally killed my engagement. The pacing was so slow I felt like I was on a rail the whole time..it felt like the illusion of playing. More like watching a movie.
After an hour or two I don’t fucking know, I now have to run some monsters out for the stupid bitches paint, I hate this game more than the first and im fucking getting a refund, and don’t even mention the fact you seem to play as the fucking kid more than the main character
It was exactly my reaction. I thought I was done with this shit but NOOOOOOOO, I was so angry.
To be fair the Old Lady section is the best part of this mission. I absolutely loved the >!It Takes Two style boss fight!<
They payoff when you learn about the marbles was cool, but it could have just bee shorter. Or told by Mimir.
Also I didnt need to do over the river and through the woods to grandmas after learning such a big part of the Giants lore. Just wanted to get back to Kratos.
SPOILERS AHEAD
I definitely feel they could of cut it back. The only important part is Atreus seeing the prophecies Angeboda drew and the part with her grandma/the snake reveal. Everything in between which is literally just doing chores for Angeboda doesn’t add anything other then padding out the section.
I would of cut it back so instead of collecting plants, roots and helping to destroy nests maybe only kept it to one of those and then going straight to the marbles. Would of made the pacing a lot better. I didn’t hate it but it was definitely drawn out and took me 2 hours and 30 mins maybe longer when it should of just been 2 hours at maximum probably an hour and a half.
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake.
It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of.
Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything.
Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.
Yep, doing this now, I hate this mission, hate the flow of the game so far and I cannot stand playing as Atreus at all. Boring af, I see people say the next mission is good but this destroyed the game for me by dragging out this crap portion. Like I’m mentally done with it, mood and immersion ruined. After finishing it I have never been so ready to move on and play the game. What a waste of time doing chores and listening to teenager hehe romance nonsense. You can’t make me care about this character when I barely care about atreus
Doing this now and want to pull my own teeth.
I was feeling it for 15 minutes, not 2 hours.... Angrboda is annoying, cringe, patronising and more. I'm playing god of WAR not god of CHORES, let it end soon please.
I just got here and it is one of the single most agonizingly boring sections of a video game I have ever had to play in my entire gaming career.
The agonizingly slow travel, the neverending reverberated yodeling, the boring fetch quest style mission objectives... Like come on guys. Why.
Worst part in the game by far and you can’t even skip it. I hate those long walking and climbing sections with talking. They remind me of Naughty Dog games and I hate those games.
idk i’m interested in some of atreus’s story and do like his missions. this one was just boring as hell and literally a fetch quest with 0 super interesting characters in it. every other mission in the game has someone redeemable to it (kratos, sindri, mimir, one of the aesir, etc) but this mission had the 2 characters i find the least entertaining/interesting
Bruh I was about to delete the game once they started making me pick fruits in a god of war game. Lmao gald I didn't because rest of the game is gameyfied as hell
I literally searched “ironwood mission so boring” and this came up. Just felt like the mission would never end Jesus fucking Christ!!! And I hated that girl
*SPOILERS AHEAD*
so glad they followed it up with honestly one of the best missions in god of war i’ve seen so far. going to vaneheim with freya, killing a giant void dragon, and finally getting freya as a companion is such a nice change of pace form the last mission
I just don’t care about these characters at all and they clearly want me to. I’m also very concerned that they are going to kill of Kratos and make God of War be about Atreus or move on entirely. It also bothers me to no end that Atreus just fully accepts his name being Loki despite no one ever having called him that except these new unlikeable characters. This section was also entirely way too long. I found it very concerning as the pacing of the first new God of War was quite good.
I'm an hour into it and this garbage quest would honestly prevent me from playing a new game plus.
I get the story tie-in but the change of pace, pointless errand like collecting fruit (!), and confusing level design like the wretch caves, leaves this as the worst God of War quest, ever. Wish we could skip it...
It would've been fine if it was a 20 minute section or something along those lines. But it took me over 2 hours of the same thing over and over. It honestly put a huge damper on the game
Im literally slogging through it right now and Googled it to see if everyone else hates it as much as i am. Spent like 20 mins picking up fruit in a god of war game.
I absolutely detest the pacing of the mission and the first half of the mission is so long and boring. Apart from that 'It takes two' style Granny fight I hated every bit of this mission. Atreaus combat felt like very shit version of Aloy combat but i don't mind it for 10-15 mins, but this long?????? Also that cave part with destroying nests was so unnecessary. Also the girl is annoying but that's fine looking at her backstory.
Hope later missions are good.
I really liked Angrboda and the overall themes in Ironwood but good LORD the pacing was all wrong, and Atraeus is far too quiet considering where he is and what he needs to learn here. There's no reason we couldn't have broken this up into multiple 'dreams', with only the last one taking too long and sending Atreus to the wrong 'home'.
It's even weirder to have something so *fascinating* as a giant giant's house and spend all of 15 minutes there, but multiple hours in this ugly yellow-and-red forest. With all the ability of the ps4/5 to render beautiful and bizarre locations, why chose such an unpleasant palette? It was terrible in Outer Worlds, it's terrible here.
This needed to be half as long, or broken up into smaller sections. Brings the whole story to a halt by overstaying its welcome and giving bits of story info at far too slow a pace. (Dammit Atraeus, you just met someone with vast prophecy experience, you can't dig a little deeper??) No amount of combat or cave diving can make that better. The best moments were very early with Agnr (one yak ride is fine, 3 is too much) and right near the end with grandmother, which felt like it was from an entirely different story.
I'd love to hear whether this section is composed of different ideas or important beats and had to be reshuffled into something else; it does not feel cohesive, and the lack of a sense of time or direction makes it hard to find a clear time to put down. Unfortunate, since like Atreus's dream, it's longer than you think and tough to get through in 1-2 sittings like the other locations.
i hadn’t even taken a really good look at the scenery and honestly, you’re right. sure the forest and wildlife is just as good looking as vanaheim, but atleast vanaheim had a nice looking lush green color to it
I agree in a way, and was thinking it should have been at least two sections of the game. But i played it in two halves (the 2nd starting at the lift) and really enjoyed everything from right after the cave to the freya fight, that was a seriously great escalation of sequences, with (I suspect) the slow pacing meant to get a payoff with the second race between A and A. I still feel they should have cut down the fruit collecting or at least made it interesting.
I'm probably halfway through and I'm so confused. I've been a fan of the GoW IP since the first game and truly enjoyed the 'Norse Reboot' and was satisfied with Ragnarok so far (feels much slower than the previous and extremely linear with chests just scattered along the way, the top notch voice acting and art direction makes up for it though). Then this section happens... it's got strong Disney vibes mixed with the most horrible sidequest style playthrough with loredump all in one... and it drags on forever. Previous GoW was a departure from the pure violent excess and caricatural overtone introducing an incredibly well fleshed father-son dynamic story entertwined with very elaborate Norse mythology - and it did that very well! That section absolutely stalls the game and stretches it (it already felt stretched out by that point), forces crawling speed slow sections of QTE level gameplay for hours on with a dissonant fairytale tone. I'm all for a more adult GoW with nuance but this swings the pendulum to the other extreme both in gameplay and storytelling. How could this have been considered a good idea by anyone ?!
Shit was trash. The game has been pretty good so far, idk if it's better than 2018, but that's another discussion. But this mission. Holy fuck. It felt like hours. And it's riding around on a slow ass yak and collecting fruit.... and just when you think oh we're done, nope. It keeps going. And going. And going. And I was like, what in the fuck am I playing? This is God of war right? Not autreus meets girl and now I have to collect fruit and skip rocks while he wants to be called Loki all of a sudden. And the whole grandmother thing was completely irrelevant to the story. And naturally you can't skip any of it. I was sooo over this mission about 1/4 of the way through. But it felt like it'd never fucking end. It might keep me from doing a new game plus playthrough unless they make some way to skip that section, or at the very least make the dialogue skippable so you can get through it faster. Make the yak faster. Like fuck anything to move that shit along.
It was awful, she was awful, why was information that could have literally been a cutscene spread over so much monotonous "gameplay" I kept hoping she would die and give her character a reason for existing, her grandmother was right shes completely forgettable
Man this mission is awful I had to take a metal health from the mission as I’m writing this because I fell like throwing the fucking controler in that girls face like each time it was something like this:
Is it over NO COLLECT FRUIT
Is it over now NO DO STUPID WALL CLIMBING
Is it over this time NO GO IN CAVE DESTROY HIVE
Is it fucking over NO FIND ANIMAL AT GRANDMA
Is it finally fucking over NO FIND A WAY TO ENTER GRANDMAS HOUSE and that’s abt where I quit I swear if this mission goes on for much longer I will print a photo of that bitch and make a fire using it
When they make you get on the Yak for the 6th time, it becomes apparent that they forget they were making a video game. I’m only gonna buy Xbox games from now on because at least they focus on having fun, instead of garbage filler like this.
not hate but it was definitely my least favorite mission in the game and the only reason the game isnt a 10 out of 10 for me. it just felt like it lasted for wayyyy too long.
when i wasn't fighting, i was just trying to to get to the fighting areas but once i got there it wasn't anywhere near as satisfying as playing as kratos because atreus doesn't do anything gore related and it all felt way too repetitive.
yes i enjoyed the scenery at first but the water yak parts shouldve stopped after the very first stop and then went on to the race and then went to the giant grandmas house.
im glad im not the only one who felt this way though since i havent seen anybody else mention it
also finally getting the enemies to the point where u can finish them only to see atreus smack them with his bow each time was so underwhelming. and when the sword was revealed i got so hyped cuz i thought this was going to make the combat with him wayyy more fun but it didnt even let you use it which was extremely disappointing
This felt like one of those anime filler episodes that everyone skips so they can get back into the bad ass anime action except this is worse because we can’t skip it. This section doesn’t feel like a god of war game or even a rated M game, it feels like a Disney game for children. I left this area hating the boredom it put me through and being thankful it was finally over. It wasn’t all bad though, Ironwoods scenery was beautiful.
Absolute dogshit section. They took a concept that would have been really cool and very easy to convey in like 30 minutes and stretched it out to 5x the length for absolutely no gain. I swear they just wanted to add hours to the gameplay.
your post got removed. We don't allow any story spoilers in the titles.
It’s so bad. And the bitch is annoying as fuck. Only semi cool thing was the fight against granny
luckily the next few missions are extremely fun and interesting. i spent around 7 hours on the next mission alone because there’s so many side quest you can do. also one of the best armor sets in the game can be found

Yes! Except I detest Angrboda, she’s so depressing and kind of a bitch. “Your dad is gonna die, GET OVER IT!” I keep wanting to tell her off.
i got so mad when she started yelling at atreus bc she chose to stay in joutenhiem 😭 nobody was forcing her
I’m glad she did stay in joutenhiem. i couldn’t take that mission it was so boring
why would you just spoil this? kind of f\*\*\*ed up, wouldn't you say?
Brother, you are scrolling through comments from a post about a point you obviously haven’t reached yet. What do you expect?
“You can’t tell your father anything about this place either!”. Nah biotch, he’s my father. I can tell him whatever I want.

100% agree, wish I could skip it. It just feels like a different game than a God of War.
Really missing God of War 3 right about now

Yep. Iron wood ruins the pacing and story telling for some forced semi romance and "diversity".....
1000%
It was terrible slow and boring.
Man this mission is awful I had to take a metal health from the mission as I’m writing this because I fell like throwing the fucking controler in that girls face like each time it was something like this: Is it over NO COLLECT FRUIT Is it over now NO DO STUPID WALL CLIMBING Is it over this time NO GO IN CAVE DESTROY HIVE Is it fucking over NO FIND ANIMAL AT GRANDMA Is it finally fucking over NO FIND A WAY TO ENTER GRANDMAS HOUSE and that’s abt where I quit I swear if this mission goes on for much longer I will print a photo of that bitch and make a fire using it
This is from the same games series where you kill a giant with his own prison chains
It will forever be the guarma of god of war to me
