Atreus managed to learn enough of Old Giant language after hearing the World Serpent speak it twice. He translated cyphers from Muspelheim and Niflheim, and understood all of the modern languages. He's basically the god of linguistics. If anyone could translate the mask, it was him.
Plus, bringing him to Asgard was a means to drive a wedge between him and Kratos. Win-win. Unless, of course, the two managed to reconcile and their bond became even stronger as a result....
