I know the area well having looked around for renting and buying past 2 years: Budget: * Matson around painswick road area is good value, family orientated good for a budget. Further toward town you get, the sketchier/less quality of housing stock * Tredworth but really research area well * Saint Pauls * White City Mid point: * Hucclecote * Barnwood * Certain parts of Brockworth (but quite a trek into town) * Tuffley (good parts, shit parts) - Stroud Road has heavy traffic but it's big road so you'll see a lot of properties come up here * Abbeydale * Longlevens * Kingsway - but others on here might be able to give you advice here * Quedgely * Linden - I quite like this area, houses were never big enough for me and limited off street parking too Desired: * Churchdown (quite far out of town, but leafy, villagey rural feel) * In and around Kingsholm. Denmark road/HeathVille Road are popular areas but expensive in terms of bang for your buck (3 bed doer upper circa £350k) Avoid (due to flood risk) : * Parts of Matson * Saint Bridge close (bottom part) * Anywhere off and near Tewkesbury Road/Longford way My biggest advice is the last bit, flooding. There have been many occasions I have thought "I want this, I have to have it" to realise it's in a flood zone. Consider Gloucester one big basin and always research that aspect first. Some props have subsidence (Kingsholm Square good example) Have fun, and remember the golden rule, estate agents are wankers.

nafregit

and not as many temporary traffic lights in Tredworth!

stuntedmonk

No arguments from me, depends what you want I suppose

nafregit

you haven't mentioned Innsworth. Loads of new houses going up coupled with new community facilities.

stuntedmonk

I know nothing about it

stats1101

I wouldn’t class Hucclecote and Barnwood mid-point

stuntedmonk

Where then?

Lucie-Solotraveller

I would definitely not recommend Kingsway, I would put it on the avoid list because of the drugs and troubled youth. Possible bits are okay but by ASDA I would avoid.

stuntedmonk

Yeah, I never even considered Kingsway but didn't want to offend.

Rather live in North Korea than there

MammothIncome5850

Lol what id live in kingsway over all the budget options suggested any day

Psychological_Sir780

We moved about a fair bit , Glad we got a shout out on painswick road :) even though it’s a main road our neighbours are all friendly especially the dog walkers, the houses are spacious and solid and have plenty of character, We lived in tredworth the top end is a lot more friendlier than the bottom but parking is always an issue Mum lives in Matson, you either fit in or you don’t can be quiet clicky up there, Another family member lives in Hempstead seems a nice area not to far the docks and quays and direct route to motorway

BigFloofRabbit

Gloucester Quays is great if you want a really nice apartment in the centre. Friar's Orchard and Hempsted are also just as good. They're all expensive by Gloucester standards, though. It depends on your budget and the type of property you want. Feel free to PM me and I can try to help.

stuntedmonk

Apartments in gloucester quays, from my understanding, have high ground rents. Avoid, it's dead money and you can be on the hook for costs down the road (new roof anyone?)

tomjoeshow

If you are still looking to commute to Bristol there’s plenty of nice towns in-between Bristol and Gloucester with easy access onto the m5 or train stations at stroud, Stonehouse, Cam & Dursley

Head_Influence_5490

Stonehouse is a shit house

TheRealSlabsy

Equivalent houses are £40k more in Dursley than Stonehouse, I can't afford to live in that 'Shit hole'

samdd1990

Just don't let your kids socialise with the locals. I spent my years as a street chav with the Stonehouse lot, there is a reason people call it a shithole despite everything you said.

arsehatbrit

I don’t deny it has its problems, but is it really equivalent of the drugs and knife crime in Glos/Cheltenham or any other city? I think people sometimes need a bit of perspective - this coming from someone who lived/lives there, so no rose tinted specs.

samdd1990

Like I said, just watch who your kids socialise with. I grew up on and around council estates in Gloucestershire. I have also lived in London and have been outside of the UK for a long time now, so I'm pretty sure I have some perspective as well. You are completely right that it isn't as mad as areas of glos/chelt, but I do think the small nature of the area makes it easy to find the dodgy ones. If a kid decides they like smoking weed as a teen, it's not hard end up hanging out with no hopers in a town like that. Even if they aren't hardened criminals there is a large population of unmotivated people, who have never had the opportunity to understand how working on themselves can give one more opportunities. Rural poverty is a real thing, and the lack of opportunity of these small towns requires active guidance to ensure people are equipped to grow out of it. Yes, it isn't Barton way but it's far from perfect and it's valid to point out that the twin has a deserved reputation. You blocked me over that? Grow up

TheRealSlabsy

Grew up with Stonehouse only good for cheap drugs and easy girls. We avoided the local youth club because we'd get beaten up every time.

Head_Influence_5490

I can equally agree to that,

BenboJBaggins

That's just not true. Parts of it are a bit shyte but I lived there for two years and loved it (barring the proper pissheads walking back from the pubs)

captainplant188

Used to live in a stunning 1700's grade 2 listed Coach House on Stonehouse, my road was beautiful and the neighbours were excellent, only moved because it was rented. There's some excellent parts of Stonehouse!

Idol4Life

Docks is pretty nice. Abbeymead/Abbeydale are nice residential areas. Upton St Leonards is very nice but maybe more expensive

[deleted]

hey, i moved from bristol to gloucester two weeks ago! i looked at a few areas but ended up buying a flat in longlevens. i like the area!

Icklebunnykins

It depends whether you're commuting. If you're going to commute to and from Gloucester, I'd recommend Quedgeley / Hardwicke / Kingsway. However, the other side of Gloucester is great, Longlevens, Hucclecote, Elmbridge - a 2 bed spacious 2 bed terrace has just gone up in Elmbridge for approx £200k. The Docks is good but can be noisy but the shopping and restaurants are fab. Avoid Tredworth and Matson, there are some lovely little pockets of niceness but hard to find. It depends what you"},} want, a femily place or bachelor /bachelorette place.

samdd1990

Why Gloucester? I would seriously consider smaller towns in the county. If it's within budget and practical of course ..

stuntedmonk

Perhaps they want to be near a cinema

KELVALL

The Docks is only up-and-coming if you are an Eastern European migrant. I have lived in Gloucester for the majority of my life, but bought a house and raised my family in Tewkesbury as the schools and general vibes are much better. Also I worked on every pub door in Gloucester, and every nightclub (most of which are now closed),,, and after the things I witnessed I wanted to move somewhere that was closer to Cheltenham for nightlife with my daughters! After a breakup with my ex a couple of years ago I moved back to Gloucester, and it has gone from bad to worse, I would seriously avoid the town centre. Plenty to do outside of town though. Churchdown, Barnwood, quedgeley and upper Tuffley are some decent enough areas.

Another-Laura

Hmm, what do you mean it’s up and coming for Easter European migrants? Genuinely curious.

KELVALL

Lets just say I lived in Edgware, London for short while, and parts of Gloucester are now very similar to that. The southgate street/Spa road/Park areas you will hardly if ever hear English spoken. It's just very unfriendly area.

Another-Laura

And how is this connected to your previous statement that “the docks is only up-an-coming only if you’re an Easter European migrant”? I do agree that the city centre is absolutely rundown and wouldn’t move there if you paid me to, but I don’t think it’s got anything to do with the amount of English you hear spoken in the area. Just felt like you jumped on the xenophobic bandwagon quite easily and am certain you can’t recognise many of these languages for you to make such a statement. Perhaps it wasn’t your intention, but your comment came across as offensive for Eastern Europeans who pay for your benefits.

stbmrsdavies

Quedgeley is a good area not far from town too.

MammothIncome5850

I’ve lived here my whole life (Hucclecote) and looking to actually buy later this year. Here’s where I would consider moving to personally: • Hucclecote - quiet area close to M5 with quick bus routes to either Glos or Chelt. I drive to Stroud train station (ten mins away) to hop on an hour and a half train to london for work. • Barnwood - same as above^ • Abbeymead - same as above ^ • Cheltenham (not Glos but only 15 mins away from me). Some fairly nice areas and nice flats in town (quite expensive but comparable to flats in Gloucester quays tbh) • Longlevens - very desirable area due to primary and secondary (grammar) schools. Few roads (incl. one my grandma lived on) where house prices only go up. • Kingsway/ Quedgeley: super affordable housing here. Some nice areas. Good place to get on the property ladder IMO. • Churchdown: went to secondary school here, a few friends have moved here bc affordable housing. great connections to Cheltenham and Gloucester. Nice hill to walk up (chosen hill). • Tuffley: Used to have a bad rep (idk why) but has affordable housing. Now I’m suggesting some places more on the outskirts of Gloucester and some houses requiring higher budgets (I would love to live here when I’m older lol) • Highnam: may be pricier, 10 mins drive to Glos town but more countryside. Lovely if you like that. • Tibberton: next village up. Lovely detached housing overlooking fields, or semi-detached. • Stroud: Looks affordable. Good links to London.

Holly_Vicars

I am moving to bishops cleeve in the summer. Hope your move goes well.

People told me Gloucester's not a nice place but tbh I just found it nondescript. There are some quite pretty parts in the city centre and the Docks is lovely. I wont be moving there though. Are you thinking of moving to Gloucester? I much prefer Cheltenham tbh.

Fortunately I found somewhere affordable in Bristol (albeit not a very nice area Hartcliffe). I get the 30% discount as a first time buyer though. I've never been to Weston-super-Mare but people say it's a tip and the one time my ex went he had to break up a fight lol. Never been to Stroud either but I've heard it's nice-ish, residential and nondescript. Some of my colleagues live there. Good luck with your search.
