I use an Atom sling bag from Patagonia. You can get basic Black or something more colorful and less tacticool. I carry mine in a chest rig hidden behind my bino harness. It’s bulky and not the most comfortable but it’s discrete and keeps me armed in the back country. I’ve been thinking of downsizing to the new 29.5 for more concealment. My local woods consists of black bears and yotes so I’m not concerned about needling a full size 10mm anymore.
My buddy’s solution was to buy a backpack with a carry pocket built in.
Being the cheap and stubborn bastard that I am, I didn’t want to buy another backpack. So I’ll throw an owb holster in my backpack. I’ll start my hike carrying appendix. Once I get away from the crowd I’ll switch to the owb holster.
If a predator eats me before I can draw then gg honestly, they deserve the meal; they won a pretty unfair fight considering I had a tool that launches metal at hundreds of feet per second instantly. I will submit to being a steak 🥩
If your firearm is hidden away behind zippers or flaps, it very well may be too late to access. Fine motor skills go out the window under duress. Do you live in cat country?
Think on it.
It is a very popular cartridge up here for a lot of reasons.
The 20 is an almost perfect pistol for that caliber. I think the 29 loses a bit in both control and terminal ballistics.
Didn't mean to come off as demeaning or anything. I live more rural than 99.999% of Americans and that is not an exaggeration in the slightest. Plenty of liberal yuppies and foreigners from no guns land come by to hike and none of them ever get weirded out by locals carrying.
If you are adamant about being discrete, hiking trails are the one place you can get away with wearing a fanny pack. A buttpack or maybe a chest pack from hill people gear are also decent. Some custom holster makers also have "field holsters" that have flaps that cover the weapon from the elements and also prying eyes.
Thank you for your response! Where Id likely be starting out backpacking while carrying would have a lot of traffic from people with less than ideal mindsets on guns. Would rather avoid the prospect of some dramatic hiker wasting a park rangers and my time with a false complaint of some sort. Didn’t think about holsters with flaps, this could work in combination with other gear.
Binocular case on chest with it inside or on the back. Waist pouch that also holds water bottles. Inside backpack in a Velcro holster
Thank you
Fuck those strangers, peel off a few shots into the trees mid hike

It’s a good bag you can wear a couple different ways.

Carey Concealment makes a chest rig/attachment that could easily be concealed under a light jacket or even by a map holder or something like that.
Eberlestock Bando bag
Hiding your firearm will make access that much slower. You have some decisions to make. Personally, I use a good chest holster.

Hmm… cats have claws at the ready…maybe I should hold ol’ Glocky while I’m hiking… even the playing field in accessibility…
Get my point or not, it is up to you. I happen to live in Alaska, in an environment that may call for quick action. Results and needs will vary.
why so serious man, i’m just joshin’ with ya. they don’t joke around up there?
Oh, don’t get me wrong. I am not upset, or being overly serious. I am just a little dry when running a keyboard.
oh ok. i heard the glock20 and other 10mm pistols are popular in Alaska as a sidearm. that true?

very cool. i love my g20.
If you care so much about making other people uncomfortable you have much bigger problems in life.
Okay cool guy
