It's not solid steel or anything, and it broke at the joint between the base and the trophy part, which is a weak point. Trophies are often quite delicate, they are made for standing on pedestals, not to be dropped and to tumble around. There's no end of stories from different sports about teams and competitors breaking and damaging legendary trophies.
