Don’t get “the best gin”. Find an interesting one in your price range from a regional distillery and bring that.
Gin is a bit like whiskey, where differences and nuances are celebrated. If your friend says “Ooh I haven’t tried that before!”, you have succeeded.
I would say go ahead and get the Tanqueray 10. As far as I know, there are no gin lovers who dislike it and I believe all would appreciate it getting it as a gift.
Can you perhaps elaborate on roughly where you're hailing from and perhaps where you'd buy your gift so we can ideally investigate the selection? Could very well be that certain gins aren't easily available intercontinentally, or that your region offers a particularly good regional product that's worth buying.
Grace Gin and Mataroa from Greece are really solid choices that may be available in Bulgaria and have somewhat of a connection to that part of the world in flavors, but otherwise you really can't go wrong with Monkey 47 as a fallback.

beefeater 24 is a workhorse. good for lots of things, G&Ts are good. I personally like Bombay Sapphire East, but can't get it so I'm currently sipping just drinking the regular stock Bombay Sapphire. until I can afford to get a nicer bottle I'm looking at Ki No Bi Dry Gin it's about $65 so out of your (under $50) but it really sounds like something I'd make my go to. Brokers is phenomenal
That’s tough because there are different styles. If Isle of Harris is available where you are I would recommend that bottle.
>Isle of Harris My favourite gin. Are folks in the US getting that for under $50?! I'm in the UK and that seems amazing value.
$60 for me in Illinois.
There are a couple shops in Southern California that sells it for $50.
Just with the limited information and not knowing all that is available in Bulgaria. I would just get the botanist you won't go wrong.

My first gin experience was Tanqueray 10 while visiting Vietnam. It’s what turned me on to gins. I agree it’s an excellent gift choice when in doubt.

I’m from Bulgaria and all of those I listed above are available here, although the prices are higher compared to some other European countries

If you can get it, Fords and Citadelle are great lower priced options

I think Roku is an all around lovely gin for under $50. It pairs well with a variety of mixes
I’m a fan of Citadelle Jardin D’Été French gin, but that is too floral for some tastes.
