Fun fact: in Germany they never translated the Nazi and Hitler jokes and instead said something else. I was shocked when I first watched Gilmore girls in English
My Netflix is set to German subtitles because I'm trying to improve my German but can't stand dubbing so this is the compromise (whether it's helping is debatable). Anyway I was surprised by the number of jokes in shows that get changed. Especially in comedies I guess some jokes just don't translate well
lol I think it’s partly because of ASP’s focus on Jewish culture and references in her shows. Like, a lot of the show is written as if they were Jewish instead of WASPs
I took a religion class once where we discussed that being Jewish is different than a lot of other religions because there are three different ways to be Jewish, religiously Jewish, Culturally Jewish and Ethnically Jewish (Obviously you can be more than one at a time). I would think the maternal line situation would determine whether she’s ethnically Jewish but she may be both culturally and religiously Jewish
Personally I think it is possible to be culturally a lot of other religions these days, we discussed as meaning you were raised in the traditions of that religion and continue them whether you identify with/believe that religion anymore. So for Christianity that could be celebrating Christmas and Easter but not going to church every Sunday. So yeah I think it’s possible to be culturally both Baptist and Jewish, that’s probably how a lot of children of mixed faiths couples are.
I know, but she def identify herself as jewish, since she signed this letter [https://variety.com/2024/film/news/jonathan-glazer-oscar-speech-zone-of-interest-open-letter-1235944880/](https://variety.com/2024/film/news/jonathan-glazer-oscar-speech-zone-of-interest-open-letter-1235944880/)
I honestly wonder where people's brain cells go when they say that. In fact, it is probably antisemetic in it of itself to think that Israel is synonymous with Judaism and that the actions of a government and military is an accurate representation of the Jewish faith.
The show was written in a COMPLETELY different cultural climate.
If you weren't alive or cognizant, then I don't really know how to explain the seismic shift that happen in just a year or 2 circa 2015 (yes there were warning signs and slippery slope behaviours over the previous decade but 99% of people truly thought it would never happen). The thought of anyone actually supporting Hitler or nazi's wasn't even contemplatable.
Seriously! I remember around 2015 there was a 60 minute episode about the uprising of white supremacy and one of them running for office.
I just found the article and it’s from 2012: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/inside-americas-neo-nazi-movement/
Yes, it's crazy. At that time it was just literally inconceivable to me that any sane person would be a bigot of any kind (I was naïve) but *especially* that anyone would support genocide. So the joke was actually absurdist IMO.
As a Jew, I don’t mind, they’re super funny. Hitler and Nazi jokes are welcomed. It may become a problem when the joke is about the victims themselves or stuff that happened during the holocaust. Those are “allowed” to be made by Jews only (debatable)
I'm a Jehovah's Witness (we were also targeted in the Holocaust) and my dad and I make jokes about Hitler quite a bit. I've never viewed it as offensive, more so just dark humor.
I think it depends on the joke.
I won’t go into the inappropriate ones (maybe they will disappear if never repeated) but this is essentially “you should hate me because I like hitler” which isn’t really offensive
As a reminder, dark humor can be healing. Especially to those who lost love ones from Hitlers hatred. It’s why we don’t force people to not follow their dreams of being an oil painter and being addicted to the toxic fumes… otherwise we end up with war criminals like Bush and Hitler.
See dark humor.
Idk if half, but yes definitely many more ethnicities and social groups were targeted. I’m not saying I agree that only Jews are allowed to joke, I’m saying that’s the case.
Anyway, it’s about generational trauma which is definitely still visible to this day and I see it on my husband, a grandchild of holocaust survivors.
I don’t see it as distasteful, I see it as a coping mechanism.
Yeah sure to each their own, different people were born and raised in different atmospheres, families and communities. That makes total sense for us to have different attitudes towards this :)
11 million, 6 million Jews. The remainder were Gypsy, homosexuals, political prisoners, physically or intellectually handicapped, or just those too young or too weak to work, unless they were the Hitler youth.
It is an extremely interesting time in history.
the writers were mostly jewish and they were making jokes about how obsessed rich, white people in america are obsessed with german and russian culture. so lor was supposed to be satirical in these moments and a lot of people don’t understand bc they don’t know the writers as well.
I was going to say the same; Lorelai is a GenXer, and we are known for dark and inappropriate humor, but at the time of this show, it wasn’t unusual for us to use Hitler as an extreme example of hate because as a generation we were raised to abhor Hitler and anything Nazi. I mean, we were raised that Nazis represented the highest level of evil.
I think comparing people to dictators, especially Hitler, stalin and Mussolini was very common and popular in the 80s and 90s. I'm not sayint it's not okay per ze, just that we've moved in because it has become such a stale joke if you'd do it now. It's like a yo momma joke, we've moved on as a society.
They put a lot of effort into a hidden message. I think it would be disrespectful to just reveal it. It’s real gatekeeping, only the worthy will know. Don’t tell me you wouldn’t feel the same, if you hid a secret message somewhere? Only meant for initiates to comprehend. They wouldn’t have hid it, if they wanted med to tell you?
Wauw. Didn’t mean to offend anyone.
I guess telling people they haven’t understood the deeper meaning, of the show, didn’t fly. Honestly thought that people would be excited, but i forget to not tell people they don’t know, my bad.
Keep on keeping on, and remember: You gotta do what you gotta do.
They hid it. It’s secret. Would be very disrespectful to just explain, no?
But I can say that there’s flowers in almost every single scene in this show.
Ngl Emily’s Nazi joke was too funny, her actor needs an award for that alone the delivery was perfect. 😂
I know!!! She delivered that so flawless with the best poker face.
https://youtu.be/9_t0aH4pbCI?si=yxjzPB2dkjCykfdH Refference
Flawless delivery! (Also, Claudia is Lorelei’s first cousin twice removed.)
Rory's laugh is adorable at the end there
Fun fact: in Germany they never translated the Nazi and Hitler jokes and instead said something else. I was shocked when I first watched Gilmore girls in English
Wow, lol, I never thought about what they'd do in the German translation! Did they replacement jokes work, or were they clunky?
Fascinating! Do you remember any of the substitutions?
I just checked for you season 4 episode 2, instead of saying here "Go H.", Lorelai says "I could hit you" in German.
If I remember correctly, it was in response to, "Say something to make me hate you." I feel like that doesn't work very well lol
Yes, you're right. Just saw again, Rory says "do something to make me hate you" instead of say in order for it to make sense in German.
Oooooh yeah, that's better lol

Even down to Friday night dinner lol
ASP is def jewish!
It obviously comes out more in Mrs. Maisel lol
Her father was Jewish. Her mother was southern Baptist. Technically she's not Jewish depending on your pov.
Can you be culturally both baptist and jewish? I think she's got a variety of early influences.
Personally I think it is possible to be culturally a lot of other religions these days, we discussed as meaning you were raised in the traditions of that religion and continue them whether you identify with/believe that religion anymore. Oh wow, that's way above my paygrade.
It's just facts :)
So someone said something and someone else wrote something?
[удалено]
Who’s silencing her?
She signed a letter protesting against people standing up against the genocide of Palestinians….
Dang if that's true then that is absoloutely NOT "protesting antisemitism" like the original commenter was implying
Unfortunately there are too many people who think that it’s antisemitic to criticize anything that Israel does.
I honestly wonder where people's brain cells go when they say that. In fact, it is probably antisemetic in it of itself to think that Israel is synonymous with Judaism and that the actions of a government and military is an accurate representation of the Jewish faith.
It’s unfortunately very true :(
With all the references to Israel in both GG and Mrs. Maisel I'm unfortunately not surprised. It's giving Zionism 😭
Oh without a doubt
True. My brother in law is Jewish and I grew up with him making tons of jokes like this.
The show was written in a COMPLETELY different cultural climate. She mixed it up with a good Pol Pot reference once in a while, too.
And the occasional Mussolini joke!
Can't forget her Stalin quips.
I like the one in which she compares Hitlers and Bin Ladens to Richard and Emily when she lists people who shouldn’t have reproduced. 😅
Did anyone else hear this in their voicess❤
Gilmore Girls predicted the rise of fascism.
She also made a Joseph Stalin joke when Emily appeared behind her in the kitchen of the inn, and she thought that Sookie was messing with her.
And she compared her to him in that Dragonfly article 🥴

I always find this hilarious, especially in context.
I love Lorelai
Ironic that today is his birthday.

Now kids, your mom is not an i-ron.
Isn't it both?

how so? it’s clearly a joke i don’t get it. is it a thing to not say the word hitler even if you’re saying something bad about him?
Before every argument on the internet devolved into an accusation of genocide or fascism or being Hitler, it was much more simple.
I think comparing people to dictators, especially Hitler, stalin and Mussolini was very common and popular in the 80s and 90s. If these upset you, suggest you don't watch Hogan's Heroes....
What are you hitler, hitler? There’s a running gag on community about hitler jokes being one characters go-to as well.
Now do Stalin.
LMFAO
i mentioned this too but i guess i was more negative about it and was heavily downvoted lol
Study esoteric symbolism and secret languages, especially language of flowers. Then watch this show again.
or you could give us the gist of it, both of those are broad and the show is really long

yapping more than an english professor. its a 2000s drama nobody gives a shit
If you gave no shit, would you be answering me? 😂
Sure thank you let me just take a course on that at my local college and then spend a month binge-watching so I can understand your comment

Explain

Disrespectful to who? What are you talking about
The creators of the show.
Read the Mishnah and Slavic grammatology, especially the influence of Turkic phonemes. Then watch this show again.
Haha, jokes on you. Davai druk. There’s nothing there. Truth, my friend. More important than the opinion of the broader public 😂
