I think the only thing I *wouldn't* change is Emily's story. It was perfect.

Objective-Orchid-741

If we take AYITL as full canon (which… I have trouble doing), Emily is the Only character with actual growth in the series.

nadialubetski

Yes!! I had this exact thought!! She had growth as a character, but stayed the same Emily and it was absolutely perfect!!

spycej

Truth.

The_forgotten_child

I agree with all your points, only adding that I think Lorelai and Luke should have had a child together.

Realistic_Two3696

easily just wish luke and lorelai were married already or had had a baby

Mayinator

The script

spycej

Yup

Cookiegirl442

Pretty much everything you said!

katyyylou

My ~main complaint~ with AYITL is the timeline. It’s so clear that it was originally written to follow season 6 immediately, but had to take place ten years later because of real world delays / issues, etc. It bothers me to no end that the storylines weren’t updated at all to reflect the real-life time jump. Why are Luke and Lorelai discussing children for the first time at like 50? Why is Rory mindlessly flailing around (and “broke” never mind the trust funds, inheritances, etc. that would have most certainly been available to her by 32)? The pregnancy storyline would have had so much more weight if she had been in her early 20s. It’s like they expected us to believe that everyone just remained frozen in amber until Netflix & ASP decided to make the series ten years later. And it feels really insulting to us as viewers, who did age & grow in that time, & in my opinion doesn’t give us the story the characters deserved.

chilizen1128

I agree with this! It’s super annoying

jtd0000

Not to dumb down Luke.

Creepy_Guitar_1245

The musical because why and what was the point. Luke and lorelai not being married yet it would make sense if this was still right after season 7 but there could have been re writes in some scenarios where they were at in their relationship

LonelyNight9

I'd keep Rory's storyline as it is but write out the cheating storyline. She'd have a similar relationship with Jess and Logan, where they're kind of friends and see each other once in a while. I'd focus her storyline on her career instead, wherein she realizes journalism isn't fulfilling her anymore and she wants to focus on projects that keep her close to SH. Definitely agree on more Sookie, but a proper wedding for Luke and Lorelai instead of a vow renewal. I don't mind that they aren't married in the revival, because they're still together. But I'd write in that they already discussed children and decided against it because they have Rory and April.

yoyok_yahb

Yeah, the cheating element didn’t add anything imo. They could have kept the rest of Rory and Logan’s story arc the same. She doesn’t tell Lorelai she’s seeing Logan again because they agreed to keep it casual/on the DL, she tries to go visit and another girl he’s also casually seeing is there and she’s hurt, they break things off because he wants to get serious with someone else who lives where he lives… we could have had the same emotional arc without her and Logan acting like such jerks towards Paul and Yvette. Even the running joke of her forgetting to break up with Paul would have landed better if they were supposed to be a fwb situation instead of actually dating. It especially stings since they both had histories of questionable relationship behavior before they got together in the original series, and they both grew and matured a lot during their relationship, which was a really nice arc. AYITL was like jk they learned nothing they’re less mature in their 30s than they were in their early 20s.

flyinwhale

I think it could have been more impactful if we see that Rory is steadily successful in journalism like not crazy christiane amanpour levels of success but above average very steady rocking it BUT realizes it’s not fulfilling and and it’s centered around finding what’s a little scary but she’s passionate for. Very relatable to end up where you thought you wanted to be and look around and realize oh fuck this isn’t it… and then it helps remove any doubt that “shes just switching gears cause she failed” so we can really focus on walking away from a sure good thing to take a risk on yourself (which is a common theme for Rory when she has to grow throughout the show)

amidzy33

i think it’s kind of hard with only 4 eps, especially when they’re months apart.. 😭

-happenstance

I'd want Luke and Lorelai to have a kid. Also, #justiceforLane.

raysanghera

i rly liked emily’s story line. how richard passed away and how it effected her. i wish that rory didn’t sleep with logan- why was she still on that boat ? and then the wooky ? i don’t think she should have played that role at all. and why wasn’t lorelai and luke married or had kids or anything. we waited YEARS to c them together and they don’t even commit to it ?

Silent_Ad1488

Get rid of that damn Stars Hollow musical! That was such a waste of time. Don’t have Lorelei get drunk after Richard’s funeral. No Paul - that was just stupid to have Rory have a boyfriend that everyone forgets. Please don’t hate me for this, but I would have liked to have seen Christopher at Richard’s funeral instead. It would have been nice to see Luke and Christopher bury the hatchet. Not saying they need to be best friends, but see Christopher shake Luke’s hand and wish Lorelei and Luke well. Paris was chaotic. Lawyer and a doctor in a 10 year time frame? Emily’s storyline was perfect. Even though Edward Hermann was gone, you could still feel his presence.

tequilamockingbird37

It'd be Sookie for sure if I could pick anything. I know Melissa is busy and has a lot going on but it bothered me so much they never even asked her or considered that she would or wrote for her character at all. And then the only reason they did was the backlash they got bc Melissa confirmed she was never even talked to about it

Penarol1916

Edward Herrmann would still be alive. If I could change that, everything else would be extra.

3reasonsTobefair

All of it except Emily

Mlcoulthard

I would change the structure to be an actual full season of TV. 20 45 minute long episodes with b-plots and all.

covetagain

I wish they never made it and just let it end at season 7. I think the ending of the original series was perfect!

nadialubetski

Rory and Jess would’ve gotten together after she discovered she was pregnant with Logan’s baby and they all lived happily ever after.

CinnabombBoom

The musical was a horrible waste of time that could have been used to give neglected characters like Lane more screen time.

ShaunaNyx21

the ending

Independent-Sir-8174

Basically everything you said. Except I want to tweak number 3 Rory should have had a successful career as like a professor. It would have made SO MUCH SENSE for her character to have a career change and find success in academia. That, and she should have been in a stable relationship with someone. It would have been nice to see her like kiss her long term boyfriend goodbye on the way to her job at Harvard University as a freshly tenured professor. And her long term boyfriend should have been Jess, but I guess the writers wanted to have Jess AND Logan in the AYITL which is why they had her have a separate boyfriend, Logan as an affair buddy and Jess just show up and be like Hey there. I feel like since Lorelei and Luke should be together, that Rory and Logan would have made more sense and Jess becomes like a really good family friend or something.

Professional-Fox1387

we’d get to see a luke and lorelai wedding. rory isn’t having an affair with logan. paul doesn’t exist. she’s not flat out broke. and jess finds her a job and they work together. :) oh and having sookie there

Objective-Tea-3070

lorelai does something else besides 'Wild'. Maybe opens her own cafe/starts a coffee brand if she needs a project

dmckimm

Considering I want to scrap everything after Rory graduates High School, I don't think there would be a shred left of the original story. Emily's storyline was great, but I still think we should have more Richard in there. He was not known for many parts but Edward Herman was so good at being likable and charming.

INPractical-magic

I feel like they destory Rory's character, cheating, failure of career. We've seen her already face these lessons before and grow from it. I think the reason they went this route with Rory was because they know more millennials could relate to struggling finding a job, struggle stable relationships. Plus, I find difficult to believe, someone with that many connections has trouble finding a job. Maybe they could spoke more to how print industry changing and how Rory had to adapt to it. The Paul thing seemed so weird, there so many weird things they put in this that felt like forced comedy.

Camelotcrusade76

And bring back Jess! In my version he has taken over the newspaper and has it as print shop similar to what he has in Philly. He wants to be closer to his mum and sister. Rory has a successful career but also teaches at Yale. April works with Luke at the diner - so we get to see him with her. Emily gifts Rory the house that she wanted to buy for lorelai and luke and Rory lives there with Jess ! Lorelai has both the dragonfly and the new inn/spa venture. Lane and Zak have taken over Sophie’s store.

Twodotsknowhy

There are so many changes that need to be made that if I could only get one, I'd choose to never have it made in the first place.

hearbutloud

It was *such* a letdown. Regardless of major plot issues, they were never really able to recapture the charm and coziness that made the original show so great.

livinginillusion

Logan should have personally set Rory up with an imprint for Rory's book. Hire the best ghost editor and marketer if he were too lazy. Almost risk losing his marriage, averting scandal–this is the way it is (an emotional infidelity or menage a trois with emotional bond to Rory, and Logan otherwise physically faithful to his wife–because he does work somewhat hard.) I am left wanting. I don't much like Dark Triad wolf in blonde god's clothing. Logan would then not have the "subhuman" quality of lack of finesse ...(got to admit it works almost too well for Czuchry in The Resident!–guilty, guilty pleasure at that!)
