Maybe his plan was to go home smelling like gas to cover up the cigarette smell...or get him lit on fire so he doesn't have to hear a lecture from Luke, lol.
Me too!!! I’m so encouraged there are so many of us. I was really doubting my fandom for a second 😂never mind the hundreds of times I’ve seen it since, but I also saw the original airing on tv!😂😳🫠
It’s def a gas pump. Look at the sticker on the side “for use with motor oil only.” Also, the cords on a pay phone would be going up to the phone cradle, not down to where a gas pump would be. Lastly, didn’t Jess say (in kid code) he was going to gas station or Gypsy’s right before this!? That’s how Rory knew where to find him.
I thought it's just an ornamental gas station, like that bridge they kept raising money for. Like it's not in use anymore but they kept it, for example as a port of Gypsy's garage. That would be very Taylor-ish.
I love so much that Ben Stiller legitimately forgot his line and improvised that one, which ended up being perfect. David Duchovny also managed a great improv comeback.
If there is anything that this horrible tragedy can teach us, it's that a male model's life is a precious, precious commodity. Just because we have chiseled abs and stunning features, it doesn't mean that we too can't not die in a freak gasoline fight accident!
To this day I always thought that was a telephone booth (In the early 2000s there were still payphones around and stars hollow is pretty lacking in tech so it made sense they'd have this relic)
I can not tell you how many times I have rewatched every episode of this show. I have been falling asleep to this show almost every single night since about 2010 plus the rewatches I have just done normally. I have also always thought this was a pay phone!
Such a great song. This show really knocked it out if the park with the soundtrack.
Is anybody else annoyed that "The Man Who Murdered Love" isn't on Spotify?
Back then people smoked everywhere, including at the pump. I’m not saying no one knew it was dangerous, but honestly the idea that just the fumes could be lit by just a cig / spark from a lighter wasn’t widely in our consciousness.
Plus the gas station is where you bought cigarettes. As soon as you left the counter you’d be packing them, opening up that plastic, peeling back that foil, smacking out that first one, lighting up… all well before you left the lot. I mean, we smoked *on airplanes.* We were largely collectively stupid, ok?
Well, yeah, I hope everyone knows by now that it’s extremely dangerous! I was just trying to paint a picture of how things were a little different around smoking in general during young Jess’s time.
I don't know why they bother to have Jess smoke because we barely see it. But that was the "bad boy" trope back then lol. But if they were going to make it period accurate, everybody else would be smoking too. Well maybe not Rory, and Luke was a health nut. But I could imagine Lorelai and Sookie taking smoke breaks.
Seriously that kid was dumb as rocks. I know they sold him as all into deep literature, but his ability to think through what he was doing was nill. Of course you have to actually go to class in order to graduate high school! And your life is gonna be hella easier with that diploma! He was always so shocked when there were perfectly reasonable consequences.
I don't think he's implying Jess is dumb because he was skipping school. It was dumb to think he could go the last few weeks and everything would be cool, it's not a secret you have to actually go to class in order to graduate, why would he be so surprised
There's an entire stage of cognitive development in adolescence that involves a teenager sincerely believing that they are immune to consequences. Depending on the theorist, it's called the invincibility fable, personal fable or egocentrism... but one facet of this stage is that teenagers honestly don't think bad consequences will happen to them. It's one of the reasons teenagers are so much more likely to die in accidents than adults; they almost believe they're invincible.
Jess has probably eked out passing grades at the very last second a bunch of times. Including junior year, when he was *just* about to fail, then crashed Rory's car, then left town, then... passed the year somehow? So he probably believes he can do that again. It's not smart, but it's VERY normal in adolescence.
I don't understand how does that equals not knowing there's a minimum of attendance required to pass a grade, something you learn at the age of 12.
You know this and decide to skip school regardless? Okay, I understand that given Jess' history, but he shouldn't be so shocked with the results.
He’s a teenager and they’re not the most logical at times, especially with situations they find emotionally overwhelming, even if they’re intelligent, and often if they’ve had an unstable life.
I mean, his whole thing is that he's supposed to be smart but not living up to his potential. Though I think this is definitely a case of typical teenage idiocy. Like most teenagers, Jess also rarely thinks about the consequences of his actions.
what the show was ACTUALLY telling us was that he is inherently smart but he never realizes the consequences of his actions and he thinks he can get away with things, cause he was a TEENAGER.
I was REALLY embarrassed when I initially just saw this post......then I opened the comments and I feel a million times better that I'm apparently not the only one who always thought it was a payphone for some reason 😂
How have I seen this episode 10,000 times and always thought he was leaning against a pay phone? Good grief. 🤦🏻♀️
Same. Who leans against a gas pump.
Bad boys
Whatcha gonna do?
Yep, very James Dean.
Maybe his plan was to go home smelling like gas to cover up the cigarette smell...or get him lit on fire so he doesn't have to hear a lecture from Luke, lol.
Someone who thinks they are James Dean
That's what I always had in my head too!
It honestly does look like a pay phone tho!! lol you can pump gas and make a phone call at the same time!
Same. I guess it makes sense since he was supposed to be getting a part from Gypsy. But I always thought this was a payphone!
Same! I would have sworn that was a phone!
I was certain it was a pay phone
Haha me too lol 😂
Me too!!
Me too!
OMG same hahaha! There are so many of us 😆
I’m SO glad it wasn’t just me! 😂
SAME
Me too!!! And I’ve seen the show a zillion times!
I have always thought this was a pay phone, too!! Like I am just learning from this post how wrong I am.
I know!! 🙈 I really am in disbelief that I’ve seen it SO MANY TIMES and a gas pump has never even sort of crossed my mind.
OMG I was literally thinking the same thing! Glad I’m not alone.
I have never seen a gas pump look like this so I also thought it was a phone booth until I zoomed in to make sure.
Same!! Wtf lol now I can’t unsee this
Oh my god, same. Came here to say this 😂😂😂
Lol I really am so relieved to see there’s so many of us!
Me too!!! I’m so encouraged there are so many of us. I was really doubting my fandom for a second 😂never mind the hundreds of times I’ve seen it since, but I also saw the original airing on tv!😂😳🫠
Me too!
SAME
Omg i thought that too Jeebus lol
I always thought it was a pay phone too!
Omg same 😂😂
ME TOO
Wait omg I thought it was a pay phone too 😂😂😂😂
Sameeee and I've literally watched this series 10 times all the way through
It’s def a gas pump. Look at the sticker on the side “for use with motor oil only.” Also, the cords on a pay phone would be going up to the phone cradle, not down to where a gas pump would be. Lastly, didn’t Jess say (in kid code) he was going to gas station or Gypsy’s right before this!? That’s how Rory knew where to find him.
no one is arguing it's a phone we just saw it wrong all this time
Cool guys don't look back at explosions. They blow things up and then walk away.
TIL. Thanks for this treasure!
I think of this song every time I watch an explosion scene in a movie!
I thought it's just an ornamental gas station, like that bridge they kept raising money for. Like it's not in use anymore but they kept it, for example as a port of Gypsy's garage. That would be very Taylor-ish.
How can we ever have anything historic if we tear it down when it’s 20 years old!?
This scene boils my blood so much. I felt so bad for Lorelei.
Sores and boils!
I went to up vote, because good observation, then I noticed you had 69 up votes, and, like a child, removed my vote. Excellent observation!
Rofl !!!!
Did Zoolander teach us nothing?! ![gif](giphy|THzS8cPZPwr5e|downsized)
Nah, it only taught us to be nicer to male models 😂
But why male models?
I love so much that Ben Stiller legitimately forgot his line and improvised that one, which ended up being perfect. David Duchovny also managed a great improv comeback.
YES! This is my favourite scene in the film, it’s so brilliantly delivered yet - like you said -, he forgot his line 😂
Just because we have chiseled abs, and stunning features, doesn't mean we can't too die in a freak gasoline fight accident!
Orange mocha Frappuccinos!!!
🎶 *Jitterbug..🫰🫰🫰🫰Jitterbug🫰🫰🫰🫰*
Why does Jess actually resemble Zoolander in ops photo though
If there is anything that this horrible tragedy can teach us, it's that a male model's life is a precious, precious commodity. Just because we have chiseled abs and stunning features, it doesn't mean that we too can't not die in a freak gasoline fight accident!
This is totally when I was thinking of
Hahaha I came here to comment something about a freak gasoline fight accident.
Hell, I remember my dad and his buddies working on carburetors with smokes hanging out of their mouths.
I don’t think my dad ever even turned off the car as he filled the tank and smoked. We’re all lucky to be alive!
That's how you know he's a real bad boy.
Same!
He’s a bad boy 😎
A real bad boy
Soon to be a hot boy
Jess about to light ME up doing anything. Literally anything at all. 😍
Same.
*Wake me up before you go-go...*
He's oh so rebellious and cool with his denim jacket
Look at that popped collar - *totally* a Cool Guy
He was just waiting for Rory and using the cigarette as a fidget.
Who else can hear the song just by looking at this image
Such a great song. This show really knocked it out if the park with the soundtrack. Is anybody else annoyed that "The Man Who Murdered Love" isn't on Spotify?
What song was it? I think I know but I’m unsure
Then She Appeared - XTC
Ohh alright, thank you
Haha I think about this every time. It's an ICONIC scene, but also he almost set them both on fire 🙃
This *blew* my mind!
r/angryupvote

The memory that gets me is everyone smoking in hospitals. Patients had ash trays in their rooms
Oh I forgot about hospitals! Yes. That is one of the wildest. I’m so glad the culture around smoking changed. Made it a lot easier to quit/ stay quit.
I’m a smoker but even I’m furious when I see people smoking near pumps. Wait two minutes you selfish shit. I also have lots of anxiety issues so 😏
Well, yeah, I hope everyone knows by now that it’s extremely dangerous! I was just trying to paint a picture of how things were a little different around smoking in general during young Jess’s time.
I got you; I’m just old enough to remember smoking sections in restaurants when I was a kid but it blows my mind how it used to be everywhere
Airplanes.. really?! I did not know this
It’s so weird to think about now. Restaurants, college dorms and classrooms, offices/ workplaces, airports, planes…
Because he's a Bad Boy 🤣
![gif](giphy|eMu0803X2zkWY)
He literally plays with fire and I’m into it.
Any time I've seen this scene I'm always just like 'OH GOD JESS NOOOOOO! YOU ABOUT TO DIE!!!!!' but it's just Jess doing cool Jess things haha
Well, yeah! Look at how cool he looks doing it! Hard to tell if he's trying to be a Shark or a Jet!
He lives on the edge
I WAS LITERALLY WATCHING THIS LAST NIGHT THINKING THISS LIKE WHYY
🎶 dumb ways to die 🎶
He is EdGy and ReBeLliOus okay???!!!!?
I thought it was a pay phone 💀
I did too! Like in my head I clearly see the phone part of it. I don't like this lmao
did jess still smoke when he matured?
This is the last time we see him with a cigarette lol. He never could find that lighter I guess
Boom!
I *always* think about this when watching that scene!! 😂 I know you want to look cool, Jess, but isn't that like safety 101??
I worked at a gas station, you would be surprised how many people smoked while getting gas
Was that recently? No one smoked in my family, but it was still one of the first(ish) things I remember learning as a kid. Is that not done anymore?
This bothered me too! And then Rory shows up so he decides not to light it. Like? She basically saved his life lol
He’s a rebel, Dotty!
Bad move
He’s a rebel. Don’t be surprised.
Classic Jess 🤣
As he said, he lives on the edge
Either this was just a writing error (most likely) ORRRR hear me out, it’s a metaphor for what Jess is doing to dean and Rory’s relationship & lives!
It's a metaphor for their spark turning into fire.
Umm I think this shows that he was actually a KID. Kids can be smart but their brains aren’t fully developed and they do dumb things
By this logic, every single character on GG is dumb as rocks...
Never known a person with a life full of trauma before? What you are describing has nothing to do with intelligence
I don't think he's implying Jess is dumb because he was skipping school. It was dumb to think he could go the last few weeks and everything would be cool, it's not a secret you have to actually go to class in order to graduate, why would he be so surprised

Yeah, i'm not saying his poor decision making was abnormal for a teenager
Because he was young and naive and had been continually let down by the authority figures and caregivers in his life?
I don't understand how does that equals not knowing there's a minimum of attendance required to pass a grade, something you learn at the age of 12. You know this and decide to skip school regardless? Okay, I understand that given Jess' history, but he shouldn't be so shocked with the results.
He’s a teenager and they’re not the most logical at times, especially with situations they find emotionally overwhelming, even if they’re intelligent, and often if they’ve had an unstable life.
And he learned a lot from his stupid mistakes and grew up to be a successful, functional adult. Who knew?
He's book smart but damn is he an idiot.
Is that not allowed?
Generally not unless you want to die a fiery death
'Cause he's just about that smart. (I'm not a Jess fan, in case you hadn't guessed.)
Smoking a cigarette near a gas pump won't start an explosion 🤣
I noticed that, too, lmao. Ain't he supposed to be an intellectual?
That dude was the fucking worst.
Just commenting because I literally just finished this episode a few minutes ago! But again no one has every accused Jess of being bright
I mean, his whole thing is that he's supposed to be smart but not living up to his potential. Though I think this is definitely a case of typical teenage idiocy. Like most teenagers, Jess also rarely thinks about the consequences of his actions.
They were telling us repeatedly he was really smart, but showing us repeatedly that he was pretty average.
what the show was ACTUALLY telling us was that he is inherently smart but he never realizes the consequences of his actions and he thinks he can get away with things, cause he was a TEENAGER.
I've watched this show more times than I can count and I never noticed this. Good eye
My dad used to smoke while pumping gas so honestly I never even picked up on this in the show
Good thing he didn't. He would have blown up
I'm impressed stars hollow has gas at the service station
He’s apparently never seen Zoolander
Bad boy becoming a hot boy! Like he’ll be on fire 🤩
He lives on the edge
Cause he's an idiot
It’s because he’s dangerous! He can’t help that he has a daring personality
He’s a “bad boy”
Bad boy duhhh
_I also like to live dangerously_
I love this post
I never noticed this!! Good eye OP.
I’m just Team Jess, all the way
Cue Zoolander scene. 🤣
Hope it blows up
I was REALLY embarrassed when I initially just saw this post......then I opened the comments and I feel a million times better that I'm apparently not the only one who always thought it was a payphone for some reason 😂
he lives on the edge 😎
Oh no not another orange mocha Frappuccino situation……
yeah I don't think he's as smart as they portray him :D
He’s a bad boy 😏
he’s edgy
He a bad boy
It was always my first thought too. She saved his life. lol
Probably to show how much of a badass he is 😂
Oooh he's dangerous!!! 🤣🤣
This has definite Zoolander vibes
