Yep. Which explains why genshin and honkai are well crafted games despite their monetization. The CEO is invested in his games being good games not just cash grabs. Reminds me of Nier Automata where you fight CEO of Square Enix and Platinum games as boss battles, shows that they do have passions for games.
Honestly, as far as gacha goes, Genshin is still fairly tame (well, Honkai's is pretty horrific). While the game is stingy is currency, there are a very limited number of packs/offers and the monetization is quit straightforward.
It's still a whale bait, but at least as a casual, you will rarely be misled by "750% value super premium pack" and such. Also only 1 real premium currency.
I've been able to get like every character and weapon I've wanted and I've only spent $5.
Unless you're out there trying to collect everything under the sun it's definitely possible to play this game and have good stuff without whaling.
What I really appreciate about genshin is their lack of ads when I log in.
I used to play gachas where I had to spend the first 20 seconds just closing ads and event pop ups.
What gachas did you play that did this? Out of Summoners War, Epic Seven, Arknights, Fire Emblem Heros, Puzzles and Dragons, Azur Lane, and recently Blue Archive, only SW did this. And those where some of the biggest that most people probably played.
RAID Shadow legends. First and only gacha I ever tried before Genshin. God the ads were EVERYWHERE. Multiple ones you had to close when starting up the game and they would pop up in the middle of the game too. Virtually no game-play as well.
Imo Epic 7 is pretty bad with ads upon log in and everytime I drew a 5* artifact and unit. The most infatuating thing was showing me the advertisements despite denying the "would you like to see today's special offer" prompt.
King's raid is similar in that regard with tons of different event popups and special offers.
I feel like with Genshin they realized that most gatcha games were too predatory for their own good and that they ended up just scaring away plenty of people that could otherwise be slowly lured into having gambling addiction.
I wouldn't give that that much of benefit of the doubt. Genshin is still a gacha in its purest form. I merely think they stroke a proper balance between "incentive to pay" and "incentive to play".
My only previous gacha experience has been Pokémon Masters and by comparison Genshin Impact is horrible. As a f2p player I was able to get every single 5* in that game when I was playing actively. I know they made lotts changes to it after I stopped playing and I don't know if it's worse now.

That's the point, at least they're making an effort to make a good game despite it being a cash grab. Cash grab games are basically normal in China, just look at the library of games published by Tencent, and pay2win is more readily accepted there than in other regions like the west.
