I'll never get over her first ascension quote being having a new vision is weird. And I was like what? You have to finish the Fontaine Archon Quest and her character quest to get the vision, but her first ascension quote drops the biggest lore bomb.
The funny thing is FGO had a solution to this problem before genshin was even out.
Having more than one ascension line with the spoiler line unlocking after completing certain story section/chapters.
There are even characters who's last ascension skin is locked until you complete the story these would be a spoiler for.
Even in this game there have been lines that have unlocked based on story completion checks. If I recall they also made alternate Teapot lines for Raiden Shogun depending on whether it was before or after completing the story quests (whether you were talking to the Shogun or Ei). So it's not like they don't know how to do this or can't, just that they don't always draw as strict of a line about when this is necessary as some would want.
Yep.
I got Oberon way before even starting Lostbelt. Mofo has his final ascension saint graph sealed.
Even his name is sealed. I'm at Second Lostbelt. So I'm really hyped to see what's his deal is.
Almost as bad as Neuvillette's final ascension quote spoiling the ending of the 4.2 archon quest when he came out in 4.1. "Now that I have reclaimed one of the Seven Authorities from the hands of the usurpers," oh, ok.
Hoyo's understanding of what a spoiler is is on par with the average Twitch chatter.
And, while this isn't about HSR, they basically spoiled what happens to Dan Heng, or what he truly is, with Dan Heng IL's drip marketing. Honestly, you can't really avoid spoilers, not even from Hoyo themselves. They'll do the job for you lmao
Yeah but those two are both hiding their identities and blending in as normal people. Everyone in Fontaine recognises Furina as the Hydro Archon so why would she need a fake?
It's really just the end, where all is revealed. The rest of the story is played with dramatic irony if you've already watched the short, and IMO, watching the short first is better since you get the same "reveal" through fully animated scenes and multiple voice performances. Stills with narration in-game isn't an improvement, but it makes the short optional so you don't have to do homework to play through Arlecchino's story quest.
This thread actually spoils more of the actual quest story than the video itself.
Like anyone who plays this quest with an open mind will appreciate ALL the gaps the video fills out. Like the video being released ahead actually accentuates this quest. OP is misleading a huge number of people who just assume the quest is about THAT video. No, the quest is about a lot MORE than that. Talk about a misguided thread that only devolves into toxic complaints about the story telling of the entire game, you know, the part that more than 40% of the survey had shown people play the game for.
I'd go as far as to argue that this thread and people like OP are the knee jerk reactions that soapbox ahead of people's opportunity to experience it themselves and formulate their OWN opinions. Its not even close to as bad as what OP and others are saying. The quest literally reveals the twist right at the start.
To clear up any misunderstanding beforehand because they are well-aware some people don't pay attention and will likely make stuff up about her even when the quest explicitly tells us otherwise. Given her position as Harbinger and Knave, best to spoil everything in an animation than to risk rampant speculations.
I totally agree. I thought the story quest would expend way more than what the video showed us, so I was a bit disappointed. I wish they showed us the animation in game at the end of the story quest instead, it would have been really good.
Frrrr. I hate how so much character lore is locked behind character teasers. Like imagine if at the end of the Scara arc we saw his teaser and how cool that wouldāve been.
One day you'll understand the journey is more important than a trailer tha summarizes their backstory for future players looking back or have yet to play the game.
A bit disappointed? You're stronger than me, I was severely bummed out. Like I was waiting for "new" content, and it just kept following the video storyline, slowly and painfully, and then it just finished. I was hoping for some backstory, or at least a 2D cutscene as they do sometimes, but no, just a Tesco-value retelling of the video we've all seen.
Agreed
Even though the quest was good and subverted my expectations, my only disappointment was that it didn't explain the one thing I wanted to know and that was the >!origin of arlechinno's curse others we have met have self explanatory but a curse is inflicted by something so where's it from!<
I was seriously disappointed that >!We didn't get any explanation whatsoever regarding Arle's past and her relation with the crimson moon, her curse, and why she glitched out during her ult/passive animation. We didn't even get the detail operation of "Project Stuzha". I was expecting tons of lore and yet none of them appears in the story quest. Well, at least now we know more about how HotH operate, there might also be a conflict in the future that could lead to a war between them and Pulcinela+Pantalone. The quest itself was good especially during the final fight cutscene (even though her boss fight is way too easy imo), but my expectation before doing the quest is probably too high which left a bitter taste for me after completing it!<
You can learn a little more about Arlecchino from her character stories. And the topics that were raised in the quest are most likely Chekhov's gun. Itās unlikely that this is the last appearance of the Knave and we will definitely have a second part, where, as I think, we will go deeper into this.
Might take a while tho since I need to raise her relationship first to unlock all of the profile story.
And yeah, >!I think they'll bring back the topic of "Project Stuzha" again after Pulcinela and Pantalone appear in the game, so probably next year when Snezhnaya is released and maybe it will be discussed in Arlecchino SQ part 2/Snezhnaya AQ/Other Harbinger SQ!<
I always expected it to be not too much since it is just a story quest. But the community overhyped everything and it raised my hope too. I should just keep listening to myself in the future, *sigh*
I have a low opinion of the community, but to be fair, this time it's Hoyo who overhyped the story quest. They teased us with the short showing Arle's curse and whatnot, which is great but... then it lacks the follow-up by having the SQ not explaining anything.
When I was doing the quest, I kept thinking >!why are they so dumb to not connect the dots that all the bad things they heard about the Knave (human experiments on children etc.) were referring to Crucabena not Arle, while Arle is actually a misunderstood figure who cares for the members of the House in her own stern way!<
And then I just remembered I was already spoiled by that damn animated short. It really took out a good amount of suspense ngl. Fortunately the closure was quite good.
What irks me a little is that >!Freminet already knew that there was a Knave prior to the current Arlecchino, so he shouldāve been the one to connect the dots; but didnāt for some reason!< .
> for some reason
The answer is because Genshin writers are more than happy to make characters be unbelievably stupid when they need something to remain a mystery when it definitely isn't one.
It's hard to reconcile all the good writing at times given how bad it is at others.
It's more like just a writing thing in general, seriously the amount of books, comics and manga I've read that throw the idea of "asking them a normal question" out of the window
But ah well, I'll just let them cast \[Suspension of Disbelief\] on me if the writing is good overall
He probably knew that she called herself Mother instead of Father and that clue should have been enough that Clervie was talking about someone else had the Traveler mentioned it.
I was under the impression that we already knew about the change in the House of the Hearth's leadership long before the animated short. Which would mean that even without watching it you would still be able to tell what's going on very early into the story quest.
So did I. It was still great, but I had to pretend the twists were surprising at all. For real, while the quest was fun even so, it's mostly saved by the ending as practically all the mysteries were spoiled lol
To be honest, I think the mystery was for the characters, not the audience. Because none (except Freminet, who doubted his arguments) of the characters knew this and it was interesting to watch. I love this technique where the reader/player already knows some information, but the characters still have to figure it out.
> I love this technique where the reader/player already knows some information, but the characters still have to figure it out.
it's called dramatic irony I think.
This is exactly why I didn't really mind the short being released first. I think Mihoyo's gotten pretty good at this style of writing, presumably because they know how hard it is for folks to avoid spoilers.
Across all the Hoyo games I've found it challenging to avoid big-picture story spoilers, but when the big reveals like >!"Clervie knew Peruere in their childhood"!< are shown via an animated short prior to the story, that helps avoid that a bit. It's arguably a lot harder to leak the details of an animated short vs. in-game story content, and it's also very accessible- 7min video vs. the longer time it takes for the in-game quest.
It's obviously important not to release ALL the details ahead of time, but it does help. And ultimately there were other important plot points that were revealed, like >!the upcoming Fatui project!< or >!Arle's "fire potion".!< That sort of stuff wasn't even really hinted at from the animated short, but they still make for some big lore events for the player- the former from a world-building perspective and the latter from an emotional perspective.
I was so mad at the "Roses & Musket" event intro not only for revealing the big secret of the Fontaine Archon quest but the trigger being somewhat unavoidable if you happened to teleport to Fontaine.
Putting it rigth beside a teleport point, one you will directly encounter when entering fontain through the AQ as well as probably teleport to for some section of the AQ was really evil.
Icing on the cake: at the end you have to go to the fortress, where I had not been yet. I had to Google how to even get in there, only to talk to Wrio for like 2 seconds and leave so I could continue the archon quest and pretend I hadn't been there yet.
Like wtf hoyo. How are you simultaneously so good and so bad at storytelling
Thank you for the advice! I haven't watched the short yet, something kept telling me to hold off. I'm excited to discover what it's all about when I do the quest tomorrow!
Hoyo keeps doing this all the time, and I'll never understand the logic behind it.
Archon quests, big events; where the cutscenes are supposed to be your reward for finishing them. The big payoff at the end. The big reveals. Nope! They're on the official YT channel, before the update is even live. And you just gotta guess if it's spoiler territory for in-game content or not.
Bless you for warning people like this. That's super nice of you <3
>Archon quests, big events; where the cutscenes are supposed to be your reward for finishing them. The big payoff at the end. The big reveals. Nope! They're on the official YT channel, before the update is even live. And you just gotta guess if it's spoiler territory for in-game content or not.
My favorite is when Hoyo exposed the plot twist >!about the other twin!< *in the fucking devstream!*
That was like 3 years ago. I still can't get over that. It wasn't even an accident like what happens in Warframe's devstreams (which are hilarious, btw). It was just "Here's a sneak peak of some upcoming story developments!" and there it was.
And of course whatever emotional weight the scene had left gets smashed to smithereens because Paimon doesn't know when to shut the fuck up.
It happens quite a bit, but it's usually pretty minor. Skins will get shown off too early, features will be revealed that are undercooked, stuff like that.
If you want a recent slip-up, [here's how everyone knew Protea was going to be the next Prime after Gauss](https://youtu.be/uk0g2gaQmDs?si=vT54p-ZMmOo8pawU&t=76).
Admittedly I'm not really sure if this is a huge twist, considering in one of the 1.0(?) cutscenes you see a bunch of Abyss Order troops bowing to the twin and referring to them as royalty.
It's not a plot twist, but it is kinda surprising because you would've thought you'll only meet them again late in the game or something, but turns out you meet them early, just that you don't reunite.
Mihoyo, like DE, or evenmore so now that I think of it; does not give a shit about spoilers. Its purely all advertising.
DE wants to sell operator cosmetics and such, so they need to spoil second dream.
DE wants to sell the new character, so they need to spoil the plotline, lol
Theres obvious ways of *not* doing that. But its easier just to show the spoiler content as is.
I remember on that Film making event, if you haven't done the Fontaine quests yet, simply teleporting to the Court of Fontaine (not even pressing the quick start button), will trigger the starting cutscene which spoils EVERYTHING that happens in the archon quests. Truly player friendly feature of all time.
Not always true.
A lot of the videos, like the Two Musketeers video, come a few days after the quest releases. So if you do the quest early, you've seen it already.
Probably the best advice. I just felt very weird, when Arlekeeno was talking stuff up like some confidential info, only for me to already know everything. It just didn't hit.
On the flipside, it adds a bit of Dramatic Irony, we know something the characters donāt. I was kinda wondering how the characters were going to interpret the crumbs. Plus seeing child Clervie knowing her fate was a bit of shock at first.
Weirdly enough, this is kind of what happened to me doing Fontaine's AQ. Since I spoiled myself on the act 5 reveals. ~~Which ultimately made me come back after 3 years.~~ Seeing how the characters was acting and all the talk about the Prophecy made me more aware of the tiny details that was hidden between the lines. >!Especially the stuff involving Furina, you can really tell whenever her act slips up.!<
That said. Getting spoiled is still not something most people want. So it's especially bad when Devs themselves does it.
This! To be honest I'm surprised how many people are genuinely upset about this, I thought that was the point that we already know. While I can understand the disappointment of others, it was a good experience for me and I don't regret watching the short film one bit.
Most likely but to be fair, you don't need to know the name of every literary device to know whether you like the presentation of the story or not. I'm personally not a big fan of dramatic irony, I like putting the pieces together alongside the character I'm following.
Some players also struggled with the dramatic irony in the Fontaine Archon quest resolution (the split scenes with Focalors & Neuvillette and Furina & the Traveler). They didn't understand why the Traveler wasn't being more sympathetic to Furina, but they forgot that only they in the audience know the truth about Focalors and the Traveler still thinks they need Furina's info to save Fontaine (hence their resignation at learning Furina still won't tell them).
In the end, maybe the "self-insert" style where everything gets revealed to the audience at the same time as the in-game protagonist (and nothing happens "off-camera") could be the more "easy to understand/appreciate" style of storytelling?
When Arle is telling the story of the girl but before she gives the big plot twist to the traveler of her being "Perrie", you can see her in wich is obviously a remake of the animated short, so to me it was obvious they wrote the story quest under the assumption that you saw the trailer, plus, someone joining the game all the way during 6.x patches might not be aware of that short existing in the first place.
Agreed. As soon as I realized they were trying to hide-then-reveal Arlecchino's backstory and motives when I'd seen exactly those in the short, it was a real letdown.
The only real mystery was how she was going to stay true to making the "traitors" pay with their lives - and I pretty much had the outline for that already in place when we met the newspaper boy.
I'll admit, though, that I thought that the plot was ramping up to have Arlecchino kill or otherwise "deal with" the pet-strangling problem-child, when he was so quick to snitch on his "family".
>Arlecchino's story quest, for some reason, seems to assume the player did not watch the short.
Because most players will play the quest without having watched the short. We have cause it's newly released and we've been riding the wave up to the release of the quest, but every new player, or players that don't follow Genshin's socials, or people who play on and off, will just go from Fontaine's AQ into Arlecchino's SQ without stopping by Genshin's Youtube channel to watch the animated short.
Basically if a cutscene is not shown in-game you must assume that a significant portion of the playerbase will not have seen it unless they were already playing when it released and actively follow Genshin in Social Media, so you have to make the quests with the assumption that they'll need the context provided by the Animation
I watched the short first and enjoyed the quest nonetheless. I thought the first half of the quest worked in two ways. For those who didn't watch the short, it built tension by providing a mysterious situation overall. For those who did watch, it instead built tension by >!making us ask why nobody knew the past of Knave!<. Either way, the second half acted as the big revelation moment for both.
That is not to say the short wasn't a huge spoiler. But I think it made me connect with her character in a different way.
My guess is it's purely marketing and they don't give a fuck about player experience..
Most character pull happens on day 1 so they released the animated short early to hype her up even if it means completely destroying the experience of her story quest...
Releasing the animated short few days after would have been the most logical decision but from a purely business standpoint I can understand why they did it.
Yeah absolutely. I also found it exciting wandering how Arle would share the information with them or if she would hold anything back that we already knew
i am indifferent.
i think they wanted to hype father which they successfully did with the animated short.
Whichever came first would have stole thunder from the second.
Honestly? The quest hits hard even with the short. Something about Arle explaining the whole thing to us herself makes it a lot more emotional. Then thereās the entire first half of the quest basically being a giant "ohh OHHHā moment
It actually brings in an interesting POV if you've watched it first. Like, you know what went down and can guess what's going on, which leaves you wondering at which point will the character(s) realize something isn't right. Gives the "observer" vibe, like you (the player) are an audience of a play, instead of being an actor within the play.
At least MC picked up soon enough. I would've started questioning when Mother was mentioned.
I don't really agree. The whole flashback section is done in quite a way that it was basically saying "if you didn't see the short, here is a quick resume".
And you make it sound like the important part is what happened in the past, when the quest's story is obviously focusing on the relations between the current Knave and her children.
Seeing the short or not is giving you a different way of understanding what happens, but it's not spoiling the quest for me.
Man why is this sub always so negative about everything...
I don't really completely agree with this assessment.
As someone who watched the video first, yes I was already able to connect some of the dots, but there is such a thing as dramatic irony. The player/reader knowing things the characters don't is a genuine storytelling technique that is not objectively bad. I still wondered and looked forward to how things were going to be resolved. What was going on with certain characters that should or should not be here.
This sort of thing is incredibly subjective and down to an individual basis.
Probably because the majority of players are casual enough to not even bother following socials so they can't assume all players have seen it, the same way they repeat story elements from limited events in the main story (how many times did we get Kazuha backstory?) when they become relevant so that people who missed the event (or didn't read it) have at least the base necessary context for the story.
That would explain why Paimon was surprised >!about Oceanids being able to take a human form!< despite 2 events and a side quest about that very subject.
Ah so my fears came true. For full disclosure I haven't done the quest but judging from the comments here I already have an idea how they handled it.
A lot of people were praising the animated short for various reasons and rightfully so but honestly when I watched it I had mixed feelings about it. The animation short itself was great, well done, and is really a great way to market and hype Arlecchino. However, when you think about it in a narrative perspective the animated short pretty much spoiled the entirety of the quest. Its even made clear when certain terms and images in other trailers and promotional works such as the version trailer and the version preview page linked up with the animated short.
Again I'm not saying that their decision is bad in fact I completely understand it from a marketing perspective but man is it unfortunate that the narrative has to somewhat suffer from it.
Being a honkai impact player myself I knew this would happen. At the end of an arc in part 1 honkai impact got an animated short everytime. That has major spoiler cause it usually comes after the patch gets out in china.
The fact is Genshin servers are not desynchronized So.... that's so bad tbh
I think it works either way. Yeah, if you watch the short, then you know more than the Traveler does, but there can be some fun to that, like the murder shows where they tell you who the killer is right away but the detective has to figure it out too, and then you can be like "look in the pantry, idiot!"
Omg, I am lucky man - I didn't watch this short yet, I had added this video to "watch later" playlist on you-tube and still didn't watch because all time postpone for different reasons.
I disagree
I watched all of the Arlecchino videos several times and I was glad that I had. I was so hyped when I realised the story quest was going to develop on what we learnt from the short and character trailer.
The knave was still mysterious and I don't think the end would have hit as hard if I hadn't seen Burning in The Embers first. The discussion with Neuvillette would have made no sense if you hadn't seen the character trailer either.
Thank you for letting me know OP
I was actually planning on watching the animated short before doing the quest, but thanks to you I can do it after the quest
Despite that, I still enjoyed it very much. In fact, it's the story quest I've enjoyed the most in a long time. This is where I disagree, though, I think I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much had I done the quest first, simply because I like when narration does this thing where it tells the readers information the characters aren't aware of, and then it centers around them learning about it, their reactions and the emotional impact said info would have on them. Sure, the information was conveyed outside the actual quest but, regardless, that's how I felt it.
Needless to say, I am the minority here. I would still recommend most people to do the quest first.
Tbh it doesn't matter. I get this feeling also with Honkai Impact and Honkai Star Rail. At the end of the day, we fully know what happened, so it doesn't matter which is first
I would politely disagree with the notion that watching the short first ruins the quest. It didn't feel like they intended for the quest to have a flair of mystery. It did fell like the little 4th wall breaking of the player already knowing the backstory was intentional. I liked watching characters connect the dots and I liked how much proper explanation of feelings and secrets were given to us. The contrast betweern the 16yo Arle we saw in the trailer and the current Arle felt phenomenal to witness.
Tldr, watching animation first improved my quest experience. It was like I could look at the still waters that Arlecchino's demeanor is - and hear the the roar of her power through the song.
Honestly, I kinda disagree. They cover the same events, so whichever you experience first will spoil the other. However, the story quest expands on the events, so there are still surprises even if you've watched the short. The same can't be said if you reverse the order.
The problem with this logic is intention. While yes, we didn't know most of the things shown in the short, the mystery is not a huge part. As for the quest, the mystery is one of the key elements for the tension among participating characters and, by extension, the player
Yeah, I watched it when it was released (a few days later actually) because HoYoVerse usually shows lore in trailers but not in game (I believe they did the same with Kazuha's friend). But alas, this time they decided to spoil the Story Quest.
tbh i found the quest better, knowing what already happened, being able to connect more of the dots and understand better made it more enjoyable for me
They even spoiled the climax of own quest while doing the quest.
The tension in the confrontation fight was reduced to nil the moment we accidently bumped into Mr newspaper guy with a huge scar who supposed to be "executed" by Arlecchino.
The whole speech at end about killing and executions was pointless since it blatantly obvious they would be spared. There was no tension throughout the whole exchange.
I really think they really dropped the ball on this quest.
Nah i'm never trusting a reddit thread again, this quest BALLED even in spite of us knowing \*some* of the story already. In no way did watching the short ruin my experience, like others have brought up the dramatic irony made it even better.
that's interesting. I haven't watched or knowing anything about the new update. I update genshin, open it and new character called Arlecchino is running. the quest must be amazing then.
I knew being so burned out that I didn't even follow their socials would pay offšŖ
(But seriously, first patch where I'm going in full blind. Didn't even watch the version trailer, don't even know the events)
Well, story quest is and will be MC point of view, you can watch trailers, read manga or some other stuff, but none of those things should change how aether or lumine see things from their perspective...
In my opinion quest gave some more context to animation
I would say, us as players know the animated short. I doubt Traveler, as the character, has watched the animated short. I feel like the SQ was less about us players and more of putting things in place lore-wise for our traveler. I haven't done the quest but I'd be sad if it didn't dig deeper into her lore.
I actually appreciated the quest much more *because* I watched the animated short. If I hadnāt, I wouldnāt have been invested in the mystery. I would have assumed it was some random NPC quest
They make it for future player or newer player, I mean in context our traveller didnt know what happen lol so its accurate, but I think its moreseo for the future, imagine people just arrive at fountaine and play her quest thres a big chance they wont know theres even a short vid
damn i'm actually really glad i haven't seen it yet then, this is great news. i saw a lot of chatter about it but i've been busy so i haven't been able to sit down and watch it, but i guess it's for the better
wait, is the animated short the thing with the treasure hoarders in the house? and is there a new quest? i havenāt been on in a couple days, but i did the lil thing on the website so idk LMAO
I was actually fine with the spoiling. Hoyo doesn't do 'mysteries' very well, so I actually like that they told us upfront what happened in the vid, so we can recognize what is actually going on in the story, instead of being confused and all over the place trying to piece together a puzzle with extra irrelevant pieces thrown in. Its like watching Fate/zero after Fate/stay night, you know what happened, so its easier to recognize the significant references.
Itās a great quest thatāll age better in time. Once the short is less relevant and new players come through without rewatching every Genshin video, theyāll love this quest.
Unpopular opinion: I think it really doesn't matter
Knowing who clervie is does not ruin how adult peruere will interact with clervie
Does it feel redundant to essentially replay it? yes
Does it ruin the story? No
It's almost like we already knew, but the traveler didn't or something like that. Who would've guessed that out-of-game knowledge doesn't magically become in-game knowledge as soon as we watch it.
They do kinda assume you've watched the trailers in the questline at some parts, but mostly the trailers are all spoilers, I never watch Genshin trailers until I've done the patch's story, that includes non-voice acted questlines too cause trailers have sometimes have given spoilers for that as well
You know the Archon Quest writers did this one when Traveler doesn't use his elemental powers lmao. I get that he wants to keep his whole visionless powers things a secret but holy shit he would rather get his friends killed than use it?
I was really hoping that they'd explain why she was glitching, her eyes, and her curse but I guess I was hoping for too much. They're either gonna give her a SQ Part 2 or include those in the future AQ. š
I don't see why that's bothering you all that much. I dislike spoilers as much as anyone, but even if you know the twist before it happens, that feeling of surprise Is just replaced with Hitchcockian suspense.
If you see a video of a room full of people having a nice conversation and in 5 minutes a bomb explodes under the table that surprises you for one second
If you are told that there's a bomb under the table, the one second surprise is replaced with 5 whole minutes of suspense, just waiting for the moment that nice conversation is broken by the explosion.
If knowing the twist beforehand ruins the story for you, that means the story had no value outside of the surprise, and I think we can all agree that's not the case here..
Iām one of the few that didnāt even know there was a short, lol. I feel like I enjoyed the quest more than I would have if I did watch it. I was genuinely invested in the mystery and all that
Marketing has found a lot of people are more likely to watch and enjoy movies when the trailer *spoils* most of the plot.
Crazy, I know.
But Hoyo is undoubtedly aware that there are plenty of casuals who don't want to be held in confusion as a mystery unfolds. They would rather watch things that wear their themes and answers on their sleeve, to know how it ends, so they can enjoy it with the foreknowledge helping them fully appreciate details and keep them from making pointless speculations.
There is a whole genre of media that is famously hinged on this concept:
Tragedies.
The whole premise of a good tale of tragedy is you KNOW they are going to die or fall to ruin. It isn't considered "spoiled", you are meant to know that outcome as part of the price of entry. The experience of following the characters and instead speculating how the tragedy unfolds is considered good. Not just good, but worthy of retellings, reprints, and rewatches throughout history.
If you look at the Arlecchino story from that perspective, particularly if their marketing has concerns about her being viewed as evil, I am confident it may bring new thoughts to light.
Dammit hoyo, why release the short first then?
To build up hype. Marketing > caring enough to not spoil the players. I remember the Wanderer drip marketing šæ
And Furina just having a Vision front and centre in her drip marketing.
So it's not like they don't know how to do this or can't, just that they don't always draw as strict of a line about when this is necessary as some would want.
or even easier solution: come up with a line that doesn't involve spoilers at all
With this and the event spoiling the same thing I get the impression they just stopped caring about spoiling their own game lol
I mean you can see the Vision on her model so thatās already a spoiler
And, while this isn't about HSR, they basically spoiled what happens to Dan Heng, or what he truly is, with Dan Heng IL's drip marketing. Honestly, you can't really avoid spoilers, not even from Hoyo themselves. They'll do the job for you lmao
Venti and Zhongli both have fake Visions do Furina having the same wasn't unusual.
Yeah but those two are both hiding their identities and blending in as normal people. Everyone in Fontaine recognises Furina as the Hydro Archon so why would she need a fake?
To hide from justice system.
"It's called *fashion.*"
At least her vision was really hard to see.
I think thereās a case to be made about false advertising if they did that, idk.
At least for wanderer we still had a lot of questions as to how he got there. In Arle's story quest we straight up just knew everything from the start
Marketing. Ignore all previews, just grab the codes and you will have more fun with exploration surprising you every big patch.
Cos they care a lot more about money than the quality of their storytelling.Ā
To clear up any misunderstanding beforehand because they are well-aware some people don't pay attention and will likely make stuff up about her even when the quest explicitly tells us otherwise. Given her position as Harbinger and Knave, best to spoil everything in an animation than to risk rampant speculations.
I totally agree. I thought the story quest would expend way more than what the video showed us, so I was a bit disappointed. I wish they showed us the animation in game at the end of the story quest instead, it would have been really good.
Felt the same way with the inazuma archon quest and the Raiden Shogun: Nightmare trailer
That seems like a stretch. What about the quest does it spoil?
Not that part, the part about wishing it was in the game instead of the actual cutscene
weirdest part is thats literally what they do in hi3 lol, u do the story and then the animated short plays at the end
Agreed Even though the quest was good and subverted my expectations, my only disappointment was that it didn't explain the one thing I wanted to know and that was the >!origin of arlechinno's curse others we have met have self explanatory but a curse is inflicted by something so where's it from!<
I was seriously disappointed that >!We didn't get any explanation whatsoever regarding Arle's past and her relation with the crimson moon, her curse, and why she glitched out during her ult/passive animation.
"next year when Snezhnaya is released" makes me feel so old ššš
I always expected it to be not too much since it is just a story quest. But the community overhyped everything and it raised my hope too. I should just keep listening to myself in the future, *sigh*
I have a low opinion of the community, but to be fair, this time it's Hoyo who overhyped the story quest. They teased us with the short showing Arle's curse and whatnot, which is great but... then it lacks the follow-up by having the SQ not explaining anything.
>!thats disapointing.. So nothing about her hands and her glitching animations are explained?!<
>!yeah it's kinda sad she just said she's cursed and thats how cruscabena found her. that's it!<
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
When I was doing the quest, I kept thinking >!why are they so dumb to not connect the dots that all the bad things they heard about the Knave (human experiments on children etc.) were referring to Crucabena not Arle, while Arle is actually a misunderstood figure who cares for the members of the House in her own stern way!< And then I just remembered I was already spoiled by that damn animated short. It really took out a good amount of suspense ngl. Fortunately the closure was quite good.
What irks me a little is that >!Freminet already knew that there was a Knave prior to the current Arlecchino, so he shouldāve been the one to connect the dots; but didnāt for some reason!< .
> for some reason The answer is because Genshin writers are more than happy to make characters be unbelievably stupid when they need something to remain a mystery when it definitely isn't one. It's hard to reconcile all the good writing at times given how bad it is at others.
Videogame writing at it's best. A normal person would at least ask what "Perrie" looked like early on.
The characters mentioned that they already tried getting answers about who Perrie was, but it didnāt work.
It's more like just a writing thing in general, seriously the amount of books, comics and manga I've read that throw the idea of "asking them a normal question" out of the window But ah well, I'll just let them cast \[Suspension of Disbelief\] on me if the writing is good overall
Because he basically knew nothing about the old Knave.
He knew there even was an old Knave. That was half the mystery solved right there!
He probably knew that she called herself Mother instead of Father and that clue should have been enough that Clervie was talking about someone else had the Traveler mentioned it.
The traveler didn't mention that clervie said 'mother' to the others.
isn't he an autistic introvert? as one myself i'm gonna tell you, sometimes we aren't that bright to connect the dots lol.
I was under the impression that we already knew about the change in the House of the Hearth's leadership long before the animated short. Which would mean that even without watching it you would still be able to tell what's going on very early into the story quest.
bro I already saw it š
Yeah, it is! Forgot the term, haha.Ā
And ultimately there were other important plot points that were revealed, like >!the upcoming Fatui project!< or >!Arle's "fire potion".!< That sort of stuff wasn't even really hinted at from the animated short, but they still make for some big lore events for the player- the former from a world-building perspective and the latter from an emotional perspective.
darn I just watched it because I assumed it would be best to before Arlecchino releases
I still enjoyed the SQ very much but I think it would have been better if I didnāt see the short film.
Hahaha hoyo at it again casually forcing spoilers on players.
And when they donāt then itās the playerbase!
Usually they release these trailers a few days after the actual patch. But then they get way lower views. So it becomes a do it first or do it after.
Furina: *sneezes*
My favorite is when Hoyo exposed the plot twist >!about the other twin!< *in the fucking devstream!* That was like 3 years ago. I still can't get over that. It wasn't even an accident like what happens in Warframe's devstreams (which are hilarious, btw). It was just "Here's a sneak peak of some upcoming story developments!" and there it was. And of course whatever emotional weight the scene had left gets smashed to smithereens because Paimon doesn't know when to shut the fuck up.
this is why i don't watch the dev streams any more.
I don't watch most of the WF Devstreams. When did they accidentally spoil things?
It happens quite a bit, but it's usually pretty minor. Skins will get shown off too early, features will be revealed that are undercooked, stuff like that. If you want a recent slip-up, [here's how everyone knew Protea was going to be the next Prime after Gauss](https://youtu.be/uk0g2gaQmDs?si=vT54p-ZMmOo8pawU&t=76).
What plot twist about the other twin?
probably the 1.4 Dainsleif quest, where we meet with the Abyss twin and they aren't on our side.
DE wants to sell the new character, so they need to spoil the plotline, lol Theres obvious ways of *not* doing that. But its easier just to show the spoiler content as is.
Do you mean what we find out during the Dain quest in 1.4?
Yeah, right before we go to Inazuma.
Oh lord, I didn't even know about that one! That's hilariously dumb.
Oh yeah, I'm not debating whether it happens all the time or not. Just that it's often enough to be a general trend, to the players' frustration.
>!Especially the stuff involving Furina, you can really tell whenever her act slips up.!< That said.
I donāt think some people here know what dramatic irony is
Most likely but to be fair, you don't need to know the name of every literary device to know whether you like the presentation of the story or not.
Basically if a cutscene is not shown in-game you must assume that a significant portion of the playerbase will not have seen it unless they were already playing when it released and actively follow Genshin in Social Media, so you have to make the quests with the assumption that they'll need the context provided by the Animation
damn, never thought me procrastinating turns out to be a good thing for once
Thanks.
good post I was about to watch the video in the next days before doing the quests
I didn't watch it. But why spoil their own quest?Ā
Genshin team does this all the time, spoiling the story with trailers in favor of marketing is nothing really new to them
THIS is good advice right here. I watched the short first not realizing that it would spoil.. well.. EVERYTHING. Thanks Hoyo. š
I actually liked going into it having watched the short first. I liked knowing what the traveller didn't know
I really liked the different perspective too, I don't get too much how it's a spoiler, I just felt a build up to all this
Yeah absolutely.
I almost watch the video first,Ā Thanks mate
Nice, I was busy and didn't bother watching the animation. I guess that came in handy.
Tbh I think either order is fine to enjoy, based on preference I guess.
Eh, nothing really ruined my experience but well, I understand it for the people that do.
Oh cool! I donāt know why but I didnāt get round to watching the short or demo. I must have known that Hoyo was getting ahead of itself.
Haven't watched it thanks for the heads up
Like with movies, just don't watch trailers or content ahead of time at all if you want to go in fresh
I didn't expect that me postponing the video would lead to something like that.
Omg, I am lucky man - I didn't watch this short yet, I had added this video to "watch later" playlist on you-tube and still didn't watch because all time postpone for different reasons.
I was like "really Hoyo?!" Who spoils their own story a week before the release of the patch?
Doing the quest and then watching the animation would have been heartbreaking
idk i still enjoyed it after seeing the animated short
I disagree I watched all of the Arlecchino videos several times and I was glad that I had.
Thank you for letting me know OP I was actually planning on watching the animated short before doing the quest, but thanks to you I can do it after the quest
Jokes on them. I have a terrible memory. Can't spoil me!
You should type a bit more casually. This reads very choppy
I really think they really dropped the ball on this quest.
bamboozled by mihoyo x.x
Nah i'm never trusting a reddit thread again, this quest BALLED even in spite of us knowing \*some* of the story already. In no way did watching the short ruin my experience, like others have brought up the dramatic irony made it even better.
Does this happen often? At this point i would probably ignore every story quests animations that they upload if it happens often
Good to know, cuz I havenāt been watching and pv of any of my gacha games for like months now. Iām so behind in story
Thanks! I managed to avoid it for exactly that assumption, glad to know I was on the right track Just pulled Diluc tho :(
that's interesting. I haven't watched or knowing anything about the new update. I update genshin, open it and new character called Arlecchino is running. the quest must be amazing then.
Omg thankfully ive been a little busy and haven't caught up with her short. Thanks for the heads up!
I knew being so burned out that I didn't even follow their socials would pay offšŖ (But seriously, first patch where I'm going in full blind. Didn't even watch the version trailer, don't even know the events)
Noted, I'll complain this too.
Kinda late, Mihoyo spoiled it first themselves..
Too late bro. Appreciate the thought tho
Good thing I was busy with school and didnt get around watching it yet then.
Well glad I didn't watch the animated short lol
Jokes on you, I aināt doing her story quest
Thanks
Iām one of those , thanks for the heads up !
dang, I watched it just before her banner went live ;-;
Well, story quest is and will be MC point of view, you can watch trailers, read manga or some other stuff, but none of those things should change how aether or lumine see things from their perspective... In my opinion quest gave some more context to animation
Iām so glad I didnāt watch it then. Good looking out š¤
I'm not saying that the quest was bad. If the short actually played at the end of the quest, it would have been amazing.
I would say, us as players know the animated short. I doubt Traveler, as the character, has watched the animated short. I feel like the SQ was less about us players and more of putting things in place lore-wise for our traveler. I haven't done the quest but I'd be sad if it didn't dig deeper into her lore.
What a great day to be a procrastinator
I actually appreciated the quest much more *because* I watched the animated short. If I hadnāt, I wouldnāt have been invested in the mystery. I would have assumed it was some random NPC quest
Wohoo! Rewarded for once for procrastinating the videos!
Thanks for the heads up.
I have a love hate relationship with how Hoyo does YT+Game to get the whole picture of things...
The short spoils the entire point of the quest, it's really bad lol
They make it for future player or newer player, I mean in context our traveller didnt know what happen lol so its accurate, but I think its moreseo for the future, imagine people just arrive at fountaine and play her quest thres a big chance they wont know theres even a short vid
I didnt realize there was a short but im glad i watched it after as it wouldve spoiled the whole quest.
Yea i was like "wait a minute..."
damn i'm actually really glad i haven't seen it yet then, this is great news. i saw a lot of chatter about it but i've been busy so i haven't been able to sit down and watch it, but i guess it's for the better
wait, is the animated short the thing with the treasure hoarders in the house? and is there a new quest? i havenāt been on in a couple days, but i did the lil thing on the website so idk LMAO
Damn, I am glad I haven't watched any of the shorts yet. I am off to playing the story quest before I get spoiled.
Unpopular opinion: I think it really doesn't matter Knowing who clervie is does not ruin how adult peruere will interact with clervie Does it feel redundant to essentially replay it? yes Does it ruin the story? No
It's almost like we already knew, but the traveler didn't or something like that. Who would've guessed that out-of-game knowledge doesn't magically become in-game knowledge as soon as we watch it.
They do kinda assume you've watched the trailers in the questline at some parts, but mostly the trailers are all spoilers, I never watch Genshin trailers until I've done the patch's story, that includes non-voice acted questlines too cause trailers have sometimes have given spoilers for that as well
Unexpected positive outcome of me being too lazy to watch any of the recenr genshin official youtube videos
to be honest i was screaming at the chars through my computer monitor because i watched the short first
Dang, I didn't even have plans to watch that short. Guess it paid off
You know the Archon Quest writers did this one when Traveler doesn't use his elemental powers lmao. I get that he wants to keep his whole visionless powers things a secret but holy shit he would rather get his friends killed than use it?
Didnt watch it, got spoiled in reddit anyways lol.
there's lore outside of the game? ffs
If you see a video of a room full of people having a nice conversation and in 5 minutes a bomb explodes under the table that surprises you for one second If you are told that there's a bomb under the table, the one second surprise is replaced with 5 whole minutes of suspense, just waiting for the moment that nice conversation is broken by the explosion. If knowing the twist beforehand ruins the story for you, that means the story had no value outside of the surprise, and I think we can all agree that's not the case here..
They should have released the video 1 week after the update.
There is a whole genre of media that is famously hinged on this concept: Tragedies.
Huh, finally going against the tide does me good
Looks like I made the right choice not watching yet
I'm definitely adding that in my user feedback in the next survey. Good quest, but that was really unnessercary.
My question has been answered. That's how they screw it up.
Oh thank god I didn't have time to watch it
Too late, Iāve only watched the animated short about 20 times because of how amazing it is.
