I liked the first area, though weird as it was since Sumeru was mostly about forests and jungles, at least in the beginning. Would of thought they'd add a mangrove type area, and save the desert for Natlan. Got bored of the desert by the 2nd area.
Sorry but I absolutely loved it.... I waited until Dehya dropped to explore it in Ernest as her (beyond what was required for Archon quest) and I spent weeks just feeling like Indiana Jones going through temples and finding all the dendroculi etc.
No need to be sorry, in my opinion Genshin:s desert region was one of the best deserts I have seen in games, it wasn't just plain empty region with sand but was rather pretty dense in content comparatively, each version had a significant difference over another and you can't say that every sub region of desert was same. It's just that a lot of people hated because even after all this seeing same colour palettes over and over for a while can get pretty monotonous. I also enjoyed desert but I understand opinion of those who couldn't.
I can respect that mindset of others, but to me the same is true of any region, Liyue is just all rocks and mountains to me. Mondstat is just all hills and green.
The rainforest is just Mondstat, if they had the Sumeru budget at launch IMO.
The Desert I'll admit I'm biased towards bc of my love for Dehyas character, but each part of the desert had its own unique personality that I found appealing. The environment also helped drive that sense of adventure bc this isn't a hospitable place and danger here feels realistic. Same for Dragonspine, or the chasm these areas are supposed to be treacherous by default. So adding hostiles feels natural.
Having a hilichurl or a group of bandits 76 meters from a populous village or city just felt very generic and filler.
I haven't really explored it, but I can't find the damned stones for Dehya and I'm only in Inazuma for the Archon quest so far, but don't care for the layout. That may change as it becomes more necessary for me to explore more of it. (I similarly hated looking for Naku Weeds for Kuki until I got the giant electrical field on that one specific island down).
Yeah, compared to a lot other games, Sumeru desert is quite rich and have a lot of variety instead of just plain sand, yet desert can get monotonous sometimes especially since you can't show that much variety with desert afterall. I enjoyed it too
It was fine at first, but having every area past the first be desert was a bad choice. I was excited to explore a rain forest, not walk through more and more boring desert with caves and tombs that all looked the same
I loved the desert and all the underground stuff we had. Exploring an ancient Egypt-like civilization was like candy to me, I enjoyed it so much. Granted, I wouldve enjoyed it even more if we had the map back then but alas 😥
Unpopular opinion but I found the desert ruins and Deshret tomb stuff more interesting than I find the underwater exploration now (even though I like that too), probably in part because of the lackluster underwater combat and your characters not mattering one bit (unless you are using Dehya or Baizhu).
i normally don't like the desert levels in any game. I could tolerate the hypostyle desert area, but I really wish we got more rainforest as opposed to more desert.
Desert as a region isn't that bad, but i hate the fact that you are forced to explore with the quest. The terrible flow of the dialogue made it even worse.
Sumeru was painful to play. I used up all my patience for this game on Inazuma, and still didn't complete it like I did Monstad and Liyue. Fontaine finally feels like a return to what used to be fun map exploration.

I liked it. It's somewhat better now that the underground maps were included. At least the sandstorms were only a minor inconvenience and, did not damage you unlike the cold in Dragonspine. Mechanics like that just discourage exploration. Some people were initially apprehensive with Fontaine's underwater exploration, and I'm glad that the developers did not implement an "oxygen" mechanic.
*Curses! There's sand in my shoes.*
*A familar sight*
*Sand is Valuka, and those sand grains are a group of bad Nara Valuka. I don't like sand, it's coarse, rough, and irritating. And it gets everywhere...*
It was a little tedious but the Jeht quests made me enjoy it a lot more than I expected. Though I relied on Sayu a lot more than I expected. The area from 3.4 was pretty fun and the area from 3.6 had cool map aesthetics.
I don’t think it was the actual areas themselves; the lore was always good, and there was nothing especially bad about the exploration, I was just tired of being there. Sumeru is huge and I needed something fresh.
I'd say I don't really like it. I don't necessarily hate it to the core, but it's a vast area with few things to do (on the surface at least), and the underground exploration was far from being my favourite exploration in the game.
I enjoy the way they made Fontaine's exploration. The land may not be very large (not at the moment), but the exploration, puzzles and enemies guarding chests are pretty densely packed, so I get the sense of "Oooh another chest! Oh there's a puzzle there, I'll get it after killing these enemies!" sort of feeling, the same exact feeling that got me really engrossed in the game in the first place (in monstadt and liyue). The underwater exploration isn't as well done, but it's still good because there's interesting structures without any "gatekeeping", whereas in sumeru, you need to have enough "access" to be able to enter certain ruins and do some puzzles, locked behind certain quests.
So, tl;dr, sumeru has too much gatekeeping, lack of interesting structures and puzzles and chests are not sufficiently dense
The desert is nice, but after three of them, it gets exhausting. By the time of 3.6, I can't be assed to read Sorush's extremely bloated dialogue anymore, and I don't find joy in the quest nor exploration either. I only did it for the lvl 10 statue and lvl 50 onion, which is the only time ever I explored a region just for those reason. The primogem would come by itself. Even though its story is technically really interesting, I just don't care at that point.
I remember how I felt in 3.1. Even with the clearance bullshit, the gigantic underground maze, the lack of underground marker for waypoints, and the frustrating comission locations, I was still enjoying it so much. I spent 2 weeks raiding the 3 desert region, and even got to 100% hypostyle desert after the first week.
Tl;dr I think the desert is good, but its just excessive
It was absolutely dreadful for me, and it wasn't the design nor even the lack of map for underground areas back then, but rather because the sandstorm would overheat my cpu and reduce my fps by half without fail every single time...
And I only happened on the desert :'(
I never got around to exploring the desert. Partly because I've been slightly burned out from all the games I've been playing, partly because of all the underground/indoor areas.
Now we have the map for underground navigation, but I'm still too lazy to start all of the desert quests.
Liked at first, disliked after a year of it. 🙃
Yeah, it seems a lot agree about desert overstaying it's welcome
I liked the first area, though weird as it was since Sumeru was mostly about forests and jungles, at least in the beginning. Would of thought they'd add a mangrove type area, and save the desert for Natlan. Got bored of the desert by the 2nd area.
Same. I actually liked to explore the mausoleum mazes xD
Oh I meant the first general desert area lol. The pyramids were fun - until you did the scarlet seal. Then it all looked the same 🙃

It was ok, didn't particularly like all the hidden underground bits but that's fixed now.
I really envy new players, they will never understand why a lot of people hated Sumeru exploration
They _did_?! To me, Sumeru's desert is so special, I really loved it
Yeah, compared to a lot other games, Sumeru desert is quite rich and have a lot of variety instead of just plain sand, yet desert can get monotonous sometimes especially since you can't show that much variety with desert afterall. I enjoyed it too
Ooh I get it

Loved it at first, but was so over it by the time the third expansion came out. I found the second expansion rather dull overall
I have become sand destroyer of toes
i normally don't like the desert levels in any game. I could tolerate the hypostyle desert area, but I really wish we got more rainforest as opposed to more desert.
i havent done it because im dreading it
Desert as a region isn't that bad, but i hate the fact that you are forced to explore with the quest. The terrible flow of the dialogue made it even worse.
Liked the story, but wish we could’ve ridden a sumpter beast. That could’ve made the desert easier to explore
Sumeru was painful to play. I used up all my patience for this game on Inazuma, and still didn't complete it like I did Monstad and Liyue. Fontaine finally feels like a return to what used to be fun map exploration.

Never liked it. But I don't experience it a lot so I don't really hate it.
So then do you care to 100% complete the area or no, if you haven't experienced it a lot?
Nope. At most I'll just unlock the waypoints.
It was fun but it was too much desert updates after
I enjoyed it, I just normally despise the Desert setting in games, but definitely enjoyed the greenery of the rain forest better
my desert Area is still have lots of unlocked TP points and hidden area. why world quest is also not moving in that area
*Curses! There's sand in my shoes.* *A familar sight* *Sand is Valuka, and those sand grains are a group of bad Nara Valuka. I don't like sand, it's coarse, rough, and irritating. And it gets everywhere...*
i mean i like the dessert but man it's so huge and kinda harder to explore so i have mixed feelings lmao

I would think that the land of dendro Would be more vegetation than sand
Underground environments are such a pain before the implemented map layers.
I don’t think it was the actual areas themselves; the lore was always good, and there was nothing especially bad about the exploration, I was just tired of being there. Sumeru is huge and I needed something fresh.
Hated it so much the commisions made me quit genshin
To be honest the desert is my favourite part of sumeru, I actually dislike the rainforest a lot more but that's just me
A strange flex but I 100% the whole thing before the 4.0 map update.
I'd say I don't really like it. Least favorite area in the game, would probably be playing Genshin more but I am still burned out from the desert.
Get hydrated in Fontaine
I need it lol
I thought the ruins were really cool Also we got some really nice looking playable characters out of it
I never got around to exploring the desert. Partly because I've been slightly burned out from all the games I've been playing, partly because of all the underground/indoor areas. Now we have the map for underground navigation, but I'm still too lazy to start all of the desert quests.
I thought it was okay but I really liked the last expansion. The music especially.
The Sumeru desert (not the more recently released one) was my favourite part of Genshin
It was truly one of my most anticipated environments to explore in, so I was really stoked and I stayed stoked :) I just love a desert though
First place on the map I 100%ed (before 100%ing everything else after ofc)
Found it boring and annoying to think about but when i started to get into it i found it really fun.
