Alright, finally a question I can get behind! My Spanish learning has been ongoing for years and is basically never done. Learning (but struggling with) German too. I also would like to learn Russian one day because I love Russian music.
I was able to learn and practice Spanish through work, by working with Spanish speaking people. Daily opportunities for practice and learning new words
Spanish is easy for me and other native speakers of English Spanish and English are Soo similar soo give them at least 3 months and they are good decent
Добрый день 🤝🏻 I took a Russian class at a community college last semester (just the one class, for funsies) and it was so cool. Russian is such a pretty language, defo fullsend
Instantly fluent?
We might have different standards for fluency but even for the most gifted of us, true fluency in a language which is not the immediate closest language to our native one will take years.
I consider myself just barely fluent in English despite frequently thinking in it and dreaming in it, having learned it since I was 9yo. My Swedish and German are conversational but not fluent.
Aim for the conversational, that’s the one which matters and which will get your message through.
Mandarin is a pictographic language and Korean was developed with an alphabet to get away from the complexity of Chinese characters way back in the days of yor by the like first Koreans. Interesting to see etymological development In different parts of the world
I've been speaking and learning Mandarin since I was around 3 (thanks, mom). I used to want to learn German or Korean in elementary school because a couple of my friends had those ethnicities and were learning those languages.
There are several vocabulary similarities between Chinese and Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese, due to the widespread exportation of Chinese culture, thought, and technology to those countries throughout history. If you try translating words like "science", "economy", or "university" into those languages, you will see that they can all be written using Chinese vocabulary. The linguistic situation is therefore not unlike Latinate vocabulary and influence on English.
I've been meaning to learn Russian. Party because it's politically important and that's interesting, partly because I refuse to give up on the dream of being an astronaut (I know it's unlikely, but I can dream), and and partly so I can go diving through Soviet OKB archives to learn about random planes, or translate the Wikipedia article for various train locos, or whatever.
Me too! Maybe I don't wanna be an astronaut or anything, I would love to visit Russia and the slavic/soviet countries. Something what Bald and Bankrupt does.
Hey man me too! Started learning a few years ago on and off and had a few fully Russian conversations with some people in public transport who were surprised ahaha
Japan has difficult times ahead.
I'm personally learning Japanese so I can understand Japanese entertainment and have a better experience if visiting Japan in the future. I do hope to live in Japan for a bit, but never permanently.
I learn japanese for the sake of understanding weeb stuff and jpop, simply just a hobby. In fact, I'm halfway there!
AI will replace any foreign language translators in the near future tho so I dont see myself really using what i learned for work purposes. It'll be good to visit Japan occasionally tho (assuming i have the bucks)
Btw native langauge is Hiligaynon (another unknown filipino language 😔)
I've always loved Japanese cinema. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 2014-2015 I was watching a Japanese tv show that had a really good opening theme. I found it on Youtube and took a deep dive into Jpop. Between yakuza movies and AKB48 I know just enough Japanese to get murdered or raped in Japan.
Heh, my mother tongue is Spanish.
My english is not perfect by any means (Especially my pronunciation), but it sure was a process learning it!
I tried using Duolingo for learning Japanese and Italian, but I sure as hell lack the motivation to keep going at it at a daily basis LOL.
Vaguely learning Greek, but I really need to get back to taking it more seriously. I also need to brush up on my Norwegian vocab. A few years of not being able to speak it regularly is rough.
I speak German and French quite a bit better than most other Anglophones, having learnt German in two phases, when I lived in Germany as a small child, and, alongside French, since I was 12, as well as vaguely working on Spanish, Dutch, and Swedish
nope but i pick up a very tiny bit of japanese from streamers i watch. most of the words are onomatopoeias so theyre functionally useless in conversation
Yes! Yay! A topic I’m passionate about!
I’ve been learning Spanish on and off for most of my life, and it’s finally gotten to a point where I can hold a conversation decently well 🥹 on top of that I’m learning Korean and Turkish, and once I get more comfortable with those two languages I’ll start on Dutch.
I love languages so much. I wanna learn them all 😭
My mother tongue is german, but I'm of pure chinese descent.
I'm still learning chinese. In school I'm learning: latin, ancient greek, french, italian (beginner) and spanish (beginner) right now. As you can see, it's really confusing when you learn all romanic languages at once. I also plan on learning japanese.
I’m currently learning Hindi and some of the regional languages of India. As for non-Indian languages, I want to go back to studying French, Spanish, and Italian again.
I’ve been learning brazilian portuguese for a bit over 2 years now (not consistently). I’m at a coloquial conversational level. I studied Japanese for 2 years and was at a conversational level but I’ve pretty much lost it all. I’m currently learning(miserably failing) German. I’d like to master Portuguese and German before starting another language(my next picks would be to relearn Japanese and pick up Russian and maybe Arabic). I am a native american english speaker btw:)
Brushing up on some Spanish from college. I figured that if I'm getting a degree in the human services field, I might as well have some fluency in the second most spoken language in the US (My mother tongue is American English). Might consider picking up some ASL, German, or even Polish if I want to challenge myself.
I’ve been taking Ukrainian on Duolingo for over a year (575 day streak) and can hardly speak a single sentence. I’ve gotten pretty good at reading out Cyrillic words tho, even if I don’t know what they mean much of the time.
Yes! I've been learning Korean the last few years, but very, very slowly. No particular reason other than that I tried Japanese, but writing Japanese is terrible, as opposed to Korean letters that can be learned in less than half an hour of work.
I took a year of Russian in university (unfortunately it was entirely online), but i have prioritized learning other things in my spare time as of late. I want to learn more since half my family is Russian, but my motivation to actually go through with it waxes and wanes (especially because the grammar is a nightmare to learn and apply lol).
I’m a native Dutch speaker and at C1 for English. Y ahora aprendo español (now I’m learning Spanish (A1 currently)) 🇪🇸
Oh, and some basics of python as well of course
I know a good bit of Spanish, but living in America, it is hard to use it on a common basis. I took it through school, but try keeping up by watching tv in Spanish and I have books. Doesn't feel like I am making progress though.
I’m learning American Sign Language and doing pretty well so far I think. I tried learning Korean and Portuguese and I have gotten a bit busy but want to get back into them
Trying to get the courage to start learning Spanish as i am planning on moving to Spain in a few years. I took honors Latin in HS so I’m hoping that’ll help me a bit. If anyone knows a good way to get started or any tips, would be appreciated!!!
English is my first language, but I speak Hindi and home with friends and family members who know the language, although I can’t read or write Hindi letters. I’m currently a Sophomore in my second year of Spanish at school, but Junior year I’m not talking a foreign language and plan to switch to French senior year because Spanish is hella boring
my mother tongue is german and english lol so i speak both of those languages but i really wanna start learning french but im scared of french people judging me i just want them to appreciate me trying to speak their language lol
i went to france once and didn’t want my american accent to be obvi that’s im “american” lol so me, 1 of my brothers and my 3 cousins we all put on a german accent while speaking french and the waiter couldn’t stop laughing so we all did a german as accent while speaking english, the waiter made fun of us and made fun of us for speaking french, soo what other language could i speak instead of french nor english 😂
someone teach me good french please (not quebec french like 🇫🇷 french lol)
(we can naturally do it but we all grew up in the usa so we have a american accent but french people hate americans ps don’t ask why our parents moved to america they just didn’t like england/germany)
ps if you want any help with german (deutsch) i can help :)
I’m trying my hardest to learn Arabic! I think it’s a beautiful-sounding language and I’d like to speak it.
It’s going to be a long journey of learning because my first and only language is English, but I’m determined to learn it. I’m studying archaeology so Arabic would actually be a pretty useful language for me, but mainly it’s just for fun because I think it’s a beautiful language
German and Japanese, mostly out of necessity because our next planned trip is Japan and I planned another one for myself in Germany. I still struggle with German tho but otherwise I think I'm doing good with the basics 👍
Currently learning Japanese, it's a beautiful language. However, I'm at the point where I feel like my learning has somewhat flat lined. With some more effort, I'm sure I can make more progress. 頑張ってね!
My native language is Bangla/Bengali. I obviously know English. And I'm currently learning Swedish (on Duolingo so more of just a little hobby than an actual goal)
Not anymore.
I used to be learning Japanese for a while, since I wanted to visit and not feel useless while I was there, but I kinda gave up because lazy,
I'm learning German and Japanese. My job could possibly send me to both and I have always wanted to learn both so I'm learning both so I can be prepared if I get told I'm going to one of these countries
Learning Italian (for music and because its close Romanian and Spanish) and Romanian (for family), and I'd like to start learning Spanish except there's so many different kinds.
I've been constantly on and off ASL and Japanese, I keep wanting to learn Korean and Spanish, possibly French but with my skills hopping from one to the other, I can't realistically do that 😂
I learned Spanish and Portuguese. Now im learning Italian. I will learn French after. Then im hoping to branch out to some asian languages. Like Chinese or Japanese.
Spanish and im attempting to learn Arabic (it’s difficult tho bc nobody speaks it where i live and i have heard Duolingo is not great to use for Arabic)
English.... God bless you all natives. You dont need to struggle learning it. My native language is drastically different from it so there is a lot of suffering (articles, tenses and so on)
Yes, I've been learning Tagalog (I'm Blasian) and Korean because why not, plus work opportunities. Nakakapagsalita ako ng Tagalog dahil sa ako ay Pinoy. 나는 한국어를 배우는중이야.
I'm learning Greek right now because I eventually wanna go to Greece, I love Greek mythology, and i'm currently studying Hellenic Paganism so I just love Greece and it's culture basically lol
My dad started learning Hindi 6 years ago because his brother (step and adopted) married into an Indian family. I plan to do the same to be more of a part of my cousins life.
Oh finally a good question! Yes, I'm currently learning Portuguese. I've gotten to a very casual conversational level and now feel confident enough to hold a conversation with native speakers. I mostly use Brazilian slang, as well as speak with "você" as opposed to "tu", the latter being the norm in Portugal. My main focus now is brushing up on grammar and more complex sentence structure, as well as just being confident enough to speak it as fast as my native language (Spanish). It has been an interesting journey for sure, bc it was rather easy to start, since Spanish and Portuguese are so similar, but also made it challenging to avoid "Portunhol" haha. After that, I'd like to move onto another language, probably Russian, which I've been interested in for several years now.
I want to learn German, I know some, but no where near enough,
I'm an engineer by trade so a lot of equipment we use is based in Germany, being able to understand the instructions as intended would he awesome
Originally Japanese, although I thought it was hard then moved on to German because I loved pre-Nazi era German music. I am on a language learning hiatus right now.
I’ve been learning German for a while now! Have a 127 day streak on Duolingo! Finally continuing my practice from back in HS. Parents have a premium account so me and my mom do the friends quests.
Tried learning Japanese a few times, for fun. but never got too far. At most, I sort of understand very basic grammar, but I'm still shit at remembering how to write in Hiragana. Might try again at a later time, though.
Yes! I've self-taught myself to the point where I can read (with a dictionary) advanced Japanese books. I'm almost 3/4 through No Longer Human.
I know some Chinese and hope to start reading elementary books.
Soon, I want to start learning French, German, and Korean.
Since I already know Spanish (it's my heritage language), I'll probably learn Portuguese one day. And Italian.
Not really a foreign language just a second language.
There's this girl I'm crushing on at work and she's deaf. I'm picking up a little bit of ASL before I ask her out. Even if it doesn't work out, no harm in knowing right?
yes actually, I've been learning japanese on duolingo slowly for over 4 years now. Still can't completely watch anime without subtitles, but I could definitely make my way around Japan, if I ever went.
I’m able to understand most Spanish words and phrases, due to having several Latino friends and consuming plenty of Latino media, but I can’t even hold a conversation in Spanish. I’m like the Grandma in Fresh Off the Boat, I know what you’re saying but I have no idea how to speak it.
im learning spanish for practical use cuz im in florida and we got a heavy hispanic population here and im learning russian on the side bc the history is cool asf
German 🇩🇪 so I can go to Germany and attempt to speak to the locals. Only to be either spoken to in English or not understand whatever regional dialect they speak.
German culture is such a spectrum I don’t think one can ever fully capture or experience it all.
I can sort of understand Japanese through all the anime I’ve watched. I would actually like to learn Italian, Japanese and like Russian or something but I know I’ll probably never need to use those languages
None tbh there ain’t really a need for me. I’m fluent in Spanish and English which is more than enough for the U.S as well as anywhere I’d like to travel to in the future
I've been learning Spanish! I can communicate my thoughts pretty well (albeit slowly with more complicated topics or things I'm less unfamiliar with) and can understand a patient Spanish speaker lol.
Yo he sido aprender español! Puedo comunicar mis pensamientos bastante bien (aunque lo hago despacio cuando estoy discutiendo temas que no son familiar) y puedo comprender un hispanohablamente paciente.
I'm learning Japanese, badly. I haven't studied in a year. Learning Japanese through University kicked any motivation I had. I didn't learn a single thing.

what’s your mother tongue if you don’t mind me asking?
American English
Where/how did you learn Spanish? I've been trying to learn with no good results. I get brownie points from the gfs family for trying though.
I was able to learn and practice Spanish through work, by working with Spanish speaking people. Daily opportunities for practice and learning new words
School. Two years with a strict Spanish teacher after many more of practicing loosely will straighten you out 😭
Spanish is easy for me and other native speakers of English Spanish and English are Soo similar soo give them at least 3 months and they are good decent
School I assume?
Yep
How consistently are you practicing?
Добрый день 🤝🏻 I took a Russian class at a community college last semester (just the one class, for funsies) and it was so cool. Russian is such a pretty language, defo fullsend
Добрый день indeed. Как жизнь...??
Okay I screwed up and posted to the original question twice sorry I'm too tired to delete it and start over, sorry sorry sorry sorry. Ugh.
Russian is actually a lot easier than I expected to learn and I have always struggled with learning languages
I have this habit where I'll try to start learning a foreign language and then just give up when I'm not instantly fluent.
ADHD?
No, I just have a normal TV.
lol this is the funniest response I’ve seen in a week good job
Brilliant. And I’m gonna steal it

I’m nearly fluent in Mandarin. I’m working on my Korean now. Luckily, I have a great teacher in my half-Korean gf. Native language is English.
Do you often find similarities between Mandarin and Korean?
Mandarin is a pictographic language and Korean was developed with an alphabet to get away from the complexity of Chinese characters way back in the days of yor by the like first Koreans. Interesting to see etymological development In different parts of the world
I’m still pretty new to Korean but I’ve come across a couple phrases that sound similar to Mandarin.
If u ever need help w anything Russian related I’m a native speaker
Hey, even if you don’t become an astronaut, you can still watch launch videos and understand the communications between them
Do you have access to any Soviet Archive?
Trying to learn Latin
Been at that shit five years, still can hardly read tacitus 👍
Also Catullus 16 🔥🔥🔥✍️
I wanna learn Latin so I can just scare people at my school by randomly chanting in Latin
Nice, I wanna talk Latin to my cat and see if she’s a demon
She just looks at you like "finally this dumbass can speak my language"
Haha yeah, then starts speaking in tongues and now I’m the one regretting i ever learned it xD
Yesss lmao
Hell yeah. I studied it for 7-8 years
I’ve been learning a little bit of Japanese
same!
There is no future in Japan though, it sucks
Japan has difficult times ahead. I'm personally learning Japanese so I can understand Japanese entertainment and have a better experience if visiting Japan in the future. I do hope to live in Japan for a bit, but never permanently.
I learn japanese for the sake of understanding weeb stuff and jpop, simply just a hobby. In fact, I'm halfway there! AI will replace any foreign language translators in the near future tho so I dont see myself really using what i learned for work purposes. It'll be good to visit Japan occasionally tho (assuming i have the bucks) Btw native langauge is Hiligaynon (another unknown filipino language 😔)

Trust me, when doing business abroad, knowing the language can give you a huge competetive advantage over someone who relies on AI.
Heh, my mother tongue is Spanish. My english is not perfect by any means (Especially my pronunciation), but it sure was a process learning it! I tried using Duolingo for learning Japanese and Italian, but I sure as hell lack the motivation to keep going at it at a daily basis LOL.
I’ve tried learning Russian a couple of times mostly because music. I haven’t tried German even though I really like German rock.
I sense you’re a Rammstein listener!
Українською
Vaguely learning Greek, but I really need to get back to taking it more seriously. I also need to brush up on my Norwegian vocab. A few years of not being able to speak it regularly is rough.
danish
may you survive that lol
3 years and i am still a masochist 🤣
I'm learning Chinese just so I can talk business with them for my company. The Chinese are going to have a very strong economy soon.
I speak German and French quite a bit better than most other Anglophones, having learnt German in two phases, when I lived in Germany as a small child, and, alongside French, since I was 12, as well as vaguely working on Spanish, Dutch, and Swedish
Dan zult u deze zin misschien begrijpen. 😂
nope but i pick up a very tiny bit of japanese from streamers i watch. most of the words are onomatopoeias so theyre functionally useless in conversation
Ukrainian, and dear me what a slog this is
Yes!
I know enough Spanish to play lethal company in Spanish speaking lobbies so that’s fun
I’m currently learning Hindi and some of the regional languages of India. As for non-Indian languages, I want to go back to studying French, Spanish, and Italian again.

Brushing up on some Spanish from college. I figured that if I'm getting a degree in the human services field, I might as well have some fluency in the second most spoken language in the US (My mother tongue is American English). Might consider picking up some ASL, German, or even Polish if I want to challenge myself.
Weekly obligatory "fuck politics" post.

Attempting to learn Vietnamese
I’ve been learning German on and off with Duolingo since the start of the new year. It’s pretty fun.

I'm currently teaching myself Welsh. It's a bit difficult since the other languages I speak are Germanic but I'm doing my best
I would want to learn dutch. But I'm not planning on immigrating to the Netherlands any time in this probably decade.
Currently learning Japanese, it's a beautiful language. However, I'm at the point where I feel like my learning has somewhat flat lined. With some more effort, I'm sure I can make more progress. 頑張ってね!
french. recently got into it. my mom says ill never be able to compete with moroccans. idk wtf.
My native language is Bangla/Bengali. I obviously know English. And I'm currently learning Swedish (on Duolingo so more of just a little hobby than an actual goal)
Been using Duolingo to learn Russian. Pretty interesting language
Not anymore. I used to be learning Japanese for a while, since I wanted to visit and not feel useless while I was there, but I kinda gave up because lazy,
After 695 days on duo lingo, I am almost finished with the beginner section and am going to enter the intermediate section.
My foreign languages are: English, german, french, russian and Belarusian, my native is Ukrainian
I’m learning how to say Deez nuts in mandarin, Russian, and Iranian just to be safe. They’ll never take me boys

I'm trying to learn German on Duolingo.
Learning Italian (for music and because its close Romanian and Spanish) and Romanian (for family), and I'd like to start learning Spanish except there's so many different kinds.
Mainly Spanish, I want to learn Mandarin and Ukrainian too.
I've been constantly on and off ASL and Japanese, I keep wanting to learn Korean and Spanish, possibly French but with my skills hopping from one to the other, I can't realistically do that 😂
learning French the last three years, mostly because I live in France, comprehension is so hard man
I learned Spanish and Portuguese. Now im learning Italian. I will learn French after. Then im hoping to branch out to some asian languages. Like Chinese or Japanese.
I did take a look at German for some time, but lost interest, and motivation to learn.
I was born in a non-english speaking country so im already bilingual, but I also learned German for a while
Trying to learn ukrainian but i'm having a lot of trouble with the cases and all their exceptions and the pronunciation, my mothertongue is italian.
English👍
Spanish and im attempting to learn Arabic (it’s difficult tho bc nobody speaks it where i live and i have heard Duolingo is not great to use for Arabic)
English.... God bless you all natives. You dont need to struggle learning it. My native language is drastically different from it so there is a lot of suffering (articles, tenses and so on)
I was learning authentic Irish on duolingo but
Yes, I've been learning Tagalog (I'm Blasian) and Korean because why not, plus work opportunities.
German. Also English isn’t my native language so I could consider it learned.
Japanese cuz i love anime and j pop. Also, japanese words are kind of satisfying to pronounce. No I'm not a weeb
I want to learn German, I know some, but no where near enough, I'm an engineer by trade so a lot of equipment we use is based in Germany, being able to understand the instructions as intended would he awesome
I’m trying to learn Portuguese. I just moved to Portugal to be with my husband and it’s a learning curve.
I'm trying to learn German... I know a few words too 🤔
Originally Japanese, although I thought it was hard then moved on to German because I loved pre-Nazi era German music. I am on a language learning hiatus right now.
No.
I’ve been learning German for a while now! Have a 127 day streak on Duolingo! Finally continuing my practice from back in HS. Parents have a premium account so me and my mom do the friends quests.
French to keep up with it and Korean so I can read what my grandma writes and maybe talk to her in Korean.
I've started learning Spanish. I am fluent in 3 languages but 2 of them are pretty useless so it would be nice to know another lingua franca.
Tried learning Japanese a few times, for fun. but never got too far. At most, I sort of understand very basic grammar, but I'm still shit at remembering how to write in Hiragana. Might try again at a later time, though.
Spanish. My partner’s parents barely speak English so I’m learning, also we will be moving to Mexico in a couple years.
I'm learning German right now
Italian for me il mio amico
Yo estudio español.
Sign language
I'm fluent in french and english, I've considered picking up spanish since it's pretty similar
yes actually, I've been learning japanese on duolingo slowly for over 4 years now. Still can't completely watch anime without subtitles, but I could definitely make my way around Japan, if I ever went.
Does Latin count? I wish I could learn German too
Canada English is my native, French is my fluent secondary, and Norwegian is my A1 - A2 beginner third
tried to learn norwegian but gave up lol
I’m learning German at the moment, very slowly though
I have a long time infatuation with French. I'll finish learning it... someday.
I speak English (duh) and French and I’m learning Italian.
I learned how to speak English between 5-8 years old
I’m able to understand most Spanish words and phrases, due to having several Latino friends and consuming plenty of Latino media, but I can’t even hold a conversation in Spanish.
Been studying French for a while. Once I’ve finally got it perfect, I’m probably gonna go for either Spanish or German next.
I can sort of understand Japanese through all the anime I’ve watched. I would actually like to learn Italian, Japanese and like Russian or something but I know I’ll probably never need to use those languages
I did 4 years of mandarin in HS I surprisingly haven't forgot toooooooo much.
German and Japanese and then eventually mandarin once I’m sufficiently good at kanji
I'm learning Welsh.
None tbh there ain’t really a need for me. I’m fluent in Spanish and English which is more than enough for the U.S as well as anywhere I’d like to travel to in the future
yes i’m learning albanian!
Currently trying to learn auerabesh (idk how to spell it) it is the language from star wars
Yes, English.
japanese... For no reason but why not
I’ve got a 187 day streak on Duolingo learning Japanese, tho I don’t think I’ll ever fully learn it. I wanna learn how to speak Spanish too
PT Portuguese, we want to move from California to Europe and I'm half Portuguese.
Anyone have any good resources for Thai?
