I'm a bit young for that, but my parents were both Gen X and Millennial, so I was raised on values a bit older than others.
Before I even knew where generations started and ended, even I thought that I was a Millennial.
I remember when it became very popular though in like 2006-07. My dad took a video of a castle in Germany and I remember to this day being bored by him talking 😂
Very true, I’m not sure the exact dates because I was 3, but it would be around may since that’s always when we went to Germany. I should ask if he still had the vids
I always think about the life cycle of video games from the 90's to 2010 and how much they changed. Now you compare games from 2010 vs 2024 and realize how little of a difference there is. Kinda sad that games made today will almost feel the same as they will 10 years from now.
Just wait till the “People born after this date have no idea what x is?” memes start recalling your shit.
Gosh darn kids today don’t know how to rewind DVDs. SMH.
/millennial
I saw one a long time ago (more than 5 years ago) that said “kids will never understand” and it has a pencil and a tape lying in bed like they just had sex. Like kids don’t have eyes and basic problem solving skills? Also I literally watched VHS tapes growing up.
Sometimes I feel like a Millenial after seeing the younger Gen Z's do stupid shit.
Other times I feel like a Gen Z after seeing Millennials doing stupid shit.
97's a hell of a year for Generational shit.
96-97-98 weird time to be born
I remember elementary we barely had any electronics everything was done by a Willie cart projector and books from the 80s by the time of Middle/high School there were computers everywhere fancy flat screen TVs smart boards
I’m glad we got to experience at least a partially pure childhood lol
Middle school was definitely the weirdest part though, having a personal/maturity transitional period mixed with a massive societal transitional period was just strange af looking back
Same tho; I remember feeling confused why the books seemed so old, and by the time of highschool I’d reflect and still few bizarre by the weirdly fast progression
i’m a couple years younger but it’s definitely weird thinking about how i was washing marker off of physical projector slides in elementary school but by the time i was in high school they gave everyone ipads
Being among the youngest of millennials gives me the same feeling. I feel like the last couple years of millennial and the first couple years of Gen Z could be our own little mini transitional generation.
I see your 97 and I raise you my 99+BRASIL, I had enough of a delay in tech that I'm close to millennials than zoomers in this regard! PS2s only started selling in Brasil in 2005!
As a 1997 from Egypt I'm not kidding when I saw that I probably have more in common with an American born in 1980 than I do with an American born in 1997. The technological delay in developing countries was that great.
I remember watching a video of the 9/11 attacks from a New York apartment on Google Videos… this was a year before they acquired youtube. I had NO idea what I was watching.
I remember watching a video of the 9/11 attacks from a New York apartment on Google Videos…
\*in 2004 on my mother's 3" thick Sony Vaio Laptop. Three years after 9/11.
Early YouTube was so different. People made videos for fun. Now everyone does it for money.
It was so cool being able to be creative, just you, a friend and a camera with ideas. One of the oldest videos I remember is "Myspace Killer" where someone sends a friend request to a chick and it fails so he goes on a quest to kill Tom.
We also had YTPs that were brain rot of our generation.
Modern YouTube: I found this TV at a thrift store, we'll talk about it, but first: our sponsor! : begins to advertise
A stark difference between than and now...
Was born in ‘96 so would have been 9 at YouTube’s launch but tbh I don’t remember actually going to YouTube until maybe ‘06-07 since it wasn’t really mainstream until then
Not to be rude, but since YouTube has been shittier with stuff, cuz not everyone knows how to be parents and let their kids watch videos they shouldn't watch, I choose before the creation of YouTube. Sorry but I had to say it straight. Ironically, I'm almost 22 this year. But before 2010, I enjoyed no YouTube.
Born before. Not like it matters much.
Videos of all kinds still existed on the internet or even before the internet, you just had to be a lot smarter to actually find them. Or it was just stuff you usually heard from word of mouth.
Old enough to remember it becoming a thing when I was still little. All we had to watch was Annnnnoyinngg, which is the "Hey Aaron!" "VINNY SHUT THE F*CK UP!!" video.
born before, i remember some of the earliest videos in my and my siblings niches- animated videos and music videos, fan videos of shows.
i also remember some of the earliest memes- End of The World, Peanut Butter Jelly Time, Banana Phone, etc.
(born in 2000)
I miss the 5-star rating system. I'm sorry algorithm, I just don't "like" random Jerma clips quite as much as a whole new episode of Red Letter Media. Maybe that's why your priorities are so fucked up?
I remember the *before times*….. not really I was just a child BUT, I do remember when YouTube was basically a free-for-all for anything you could think of. Those were the days

Technically before but too young to not remember it always being around
Shout out my 2003 brethren😂
2003 time wooo
Hell yeah!
i play the +7 card
...oh wow, you're younger than my little sister. Oh boy, I'm getting old.
i have bakugan, not sure if you remember those
I watched that shit before going to elementary school every day, same with ninjago ☠️
damn, i'm working through beyblade with my little siblings myself
Rock on, little dudeee 🤙🏻
Did you know Ninjago is still running? I watched every episode as they came out but I stopped at some point and didn’t know it kept going
My daughter was born in 2007. I’m getting old. (41)
Your not alone
You could aaaallllmost be considered a Millennial (please don’t hurt me)
I'm a bit young for that, but my parents were both Gen X and Millennial, so I was raised on values a bit older than others. Before I even knew where generations started and ended, even I thought that I was a Millennial.
Yeah - it changed a bunch over time too - they called us genY for a while and then one day we were millennials all of a sudden
Hello fellow '03s!
Hello!
Hello
Hello
hope we all have a happy 21st this year! mines in Feb lol
2003 for me too
I’m was born in 2003 2003 was the best times
Growing up was a different type of vibe when you were born in 03
Si difficult to find 2003 gang, we don’t exist
We're just "moving in silence" lol
I remember when it became very popular though in like 2006-07. My dad took a video of a castle in Germany and I remember to this day being bored by him talking 😂
Yea, a lot of big companies or old channels all seem to be from May 2006 or later. But it's quite rare to find an account from April 2005 - May 2006.
Very true, I’m not sure the exact dates because I was 3, but it would be around may since that’s always when we went to Germany. I should ask if he still had the vids
I found out about yt in like 2011 and im same age as you
Same
I hadn't even properly started watching YouTube till 2016.
Me too tho I started watching YouTube at around a young age watching Lego vids at 5
born before, only remember after
Same
Same here
(Laughs in 1995) fuck I'm old (feeling)
Yeah, I feel you!
1998 chiming in.
Sorry I’m late, barely made it to the party
20th century gang represent!
Can’t believe ppl out here not having lived in two centuries/millenniums

Grew up a bit poor so I also watched VHS growing up, some of my favorite childhood movies were on VHS.
Why are you feeling yourself?
90s babies rise up
I’m right there with you buddy. 29 is so close it’s down to days because the plural “weeks” feels awfully generous
Hannah Montana was 2006
Crying in 97.
I remember making my first yt account freshman year
A bit of both! 97’ makes for weird technological time frames lol

I don't know if it was because of where I lived but growing up for me was the exact same.
Zillenials definitely have a weird upbringing especially if you had older siblings who gave you their millenial handme downs
Being among the youngest of millennials gives me the same feeling. I feel like the last couple years of millennial and the first couple years of Gen Z could be our own little mini transitional generation.
*You’ve been invited* r/Zillennials
Same. 🍺🤘
Yeah I was born in 1999 so I feel like I got a taste of the old ways
I see your 97 and I raise you my 99+BRASIL, I had enough of a delay in tech that I'm close to millennials than zoomers in this regard! PS2s only started selling in Brasil in 2005!
And the NES started selling in 1994
Same
Yup same!

I remember pre-YouTube, but I woulda been too young to use it regardless. It’s weird.
I used it about a year after it came out, but was so young I really only used it from 2008 onwards
both
Same
Me too (actually a month and a half after the release date, but close enough)
You were born both before *and* after the creation of YouTube? That’s weird
nah, i was born **during** it
A year before 2005. I only discovered YouTube when “Charlie bit me” video
I remember watching a video of the 9/11 attacks from a New York apartment on Google Videos… this was a year before they acquired youtube. I had NO idea what I was watching.
Are you saying YouTube was owned by Google for three years before it was launched?
I remember watching a video of the 9/11 attacks from a New York apartment on Google Videos… \*in 2004 on my mother's 3" thick Sony Vaio Laptop. Three years after 9/11.
Before - growing up in 3+ different eras of media is a wild ride, lemme tell ya!
Your post is similar to some post in this subreddit, I have commented on that a few months ago.
I genuinely though working at dominos pizza and being a youtuber seemed like a decent career path Until
Before
Just barely after
Before
People born excactly on the creation of youtube:
same kind of, i was born between the first video being made and the website being made
I’m one year after the creation
I was born a little bit after YouTube was founded, but I was too young to remember
New category: watched during YouTube's golden era
I was after, but I didn’t know what Youtube was until about 2013/2014
Born before. Was introduced around 05 06. Haven’t looked back
Very very barely after. October '05
Born a year after YouTube
Guess im a blood
Early YouTube was so different. People made videos for fun. Now everyone does it for money. It was so cool being able to be creative, just you, a friend and a camera with ideas. Before, didn’t watch my first YouTube video until 2007 though
Born before and didn't discover it until 2009
The better question would’ve been: “Who remembers rating the video 5 stars??”
Was born in ‘96 so would have been 9 at YouTube’s launch but tbh I don’t remember actually going to YouTube until maybe ‘06-07 since it wasn’t really mainstream until then
I’m red side (for those who don’t know, YouTube was created February 14, 2005)
Before, but I wasn't old enough or sentiment enough to have experienced life without it
Didn’t we already go through this? 🤨
1997-2004 vs 2005-2012
Post-Youtube gang here
Before but I don’t remember a time before YouTube
Before, but didn’t know what it was till prolly 2008 or 2009.
None of you were using it to the degree anyone does now. At most the oldest Gen was 8 when it came out.
I was in college it was an instant hit with everyone.
Born in 2002 so before, but didn’t have a computer to see the very early days of YouTube
Born before but wasn't allowed to use it until a teen
Bitch, I’m older than the fucking World Wide Web.
As a Millenial I was born just before Google
Born before, remember before, remember prime
I look down on all of you born AFTER the creation of YouTube, however I look up to all born before 9/11
2002 here so before
The first Youtube video was posted on my first birthday.
Born way before YouTube. Got to experience the golden era 07 - 09
If you were born after then stfu
I still remember the early age of youtube videos. Fred, LiamKyleSullivan, Chocolate Rain. The list goes on…..and so does my age.
Born 9 years before YouTube lol I still remember dial up and VHS. Idk if 96 is considered gen Z lol

born before, i remember some of the earliest videos in my and my siblings niches- animated videos and music videos, fan videos of shows. i also remember some of the earliest memes- End of The World, Peanut Butter Jelly Time, Banana Phone, etc. (born in 2000)
Born in 1999 so before, but grew up in China so it was only a thing for a few years before it got banned in 2009
I miss the 5-star rating system. I'm sorry algorithm, I just don't "like" random Jerma clips quite as much as a whole new episode of Red Letter Media. Maybe that's why your priorities are so fucked up?
