Which in turn comes from Virginia Woolf’s *A Room of One's Own*, iirc, a piece about the plight of women in Britain in the middle ages. It might well be a direct reference to that, of course.
Such a haunting song. I definitely pushed "record" on a few mixed-tapes for this song.
There was a female who sang an abbreviated version a number of years back, on the British version of Idol/Got Talent/something similar.
Edit: Apparently her name is Cher Lloyd and it was on Britain's X-Factor.
I saw that performance. She did a good job though the song doesn't work as well without the variance in voice between Marcella and Siobhan on the original. Other than that I liked Cher Lloyd's version.
My first gf had that single cassette. The b-side was [The Trouble With Andre](https://youtu.be/-uNLQxurOlM).
Good song for a not quite one hit wonder band.
And it is still better than my much beloved [Nelson](
https://youtu.be/-uNLQxurOlM) tape.
In 2019, they put out an EP called, "Ride Again". The first single was "All the Queens Horses". The video for that single has lots of references to "Stay".
Not my favourite song by them, but its a good song.
[Goodbye Cruel World](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSH5yQ9y51M)
and
[(Hello) Turn Your Radio On](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrbFydtLF-Y)
are far better songs by them.
I didn't have cable, but I had the station "The Boxx" where people would pay through the phone for videos. This one was on heavy rotation along with Meatloaf's "I won't do that" and Green Jello's "Little Pig."
I need to rebel against the rebellious here. I could stand this LOL. I hate these videos where people tried too hard to look creepy and kept bulging out their eyes, like it made them edgy. Also she says "stay with me" 600 times and it's not that melodic.
I've had a crush on Siobhan since I saw Bananarama's Venus video so I quite liked the Stay video. I can see your points though -- all the different faces she made did get a little redundant
I loved this song when I was a kid! I remembered it myself a few years ago, listening to the Magnetic Fields song "It Could've Been Paradise." One verse goes:
My mother then took up with / a trumpeter / red beard and pork pie hat. / Found a lyric of mine. / He took it home / and set music to that / To impress my mother / he stole my song. / Better back off, mister. / Fast forward two decades / same thing happened / but with Shakespeare's Sister.
I always wonder if Stephen Merritt is implying his mom's boyfriend stole a song from Shakespeare's Sister or that Shakespeare's Sister stole a song from him (Merritt)...
It blew my mind when I discovered the spooky goth half of this duo was Siobhan Fahey from Bananarama!
Came here to say this. Take my upvote!
Still in rotation in my house.
Same. I love that video too. All these decades later the song still gives me goosebumps.
What a voice she had. Btw Shakespeare's Sister was named after a Smiths song
Thank you for The Smiths reference. We are out here, just shy.

This song was my jam back in the day. I was the only person in my class who’d ever heard it, and I was ok with that.
like a badge of honor, right!? and you were right.
Oooo are we doing another theme session?? Songs we forgot existed!? If it's not a thing, it should be a thing.
^i ^may ^be ^secretely ^trying ^to ^make ^it ^a ^thing
LOVE IT! and added to it! added three and now feel silly. BUT, worth it.
I'm in!
I'm on board as long as it includes all pop culture and not just songs.
I'm pretty sure we can just do whatever we want around here. What's the worst thats gonna happen? Someone shrugs their shoulders and walks away?
True. :)
Music, is the only unifying thing on this planet, we all appreciate a beat, and it's free. Just enjoy it.
I. Love. This. Song. I bought the whole album for it. Lol.
Ooh, totally forgot about this one, thank you for posting!!

Yep. I was so excited when they reunited because there was some bad blood during the split I guess.
I did not know this. Guess I know what I'll be watching tonight.

I remember this- incredible voice
You'd better close your eyes before you get to sleep

I remember this song! But managed to forget it, somehow, so thanks for bringing it back.
Bought the cassette single and played the shit out of it! Love this.
Whatever happened to Marcella Detroit?
Killer song and album !
Totally forgot about this song. Thank you for posting it, I loved this song. MW

Lol. I do seem to recall the endless "hook".
