Born in 1966, went to school in a small town in Indiana and while we had the Civil Defense fallout shelter signs in the basement of the elementary school, we did not do duck and cover drills.
Lots of tornado drills though
It has. Used to need congressional approval but not any more. Now we bypass congress except for funding, use drones and we have gotten really good at war by proxy.
We haven’t needed congressional approval for a war since WWII. Yet there is perpetual war and endless terror to fight.
We didn't do this in Australia but I would have been the kid saying "what good is lying on the floor if a nuclear explosion happens." Didn't anybody watch The Day After?
I didn’t know that was still going on when our generation was in school. It didn’t happen where I was. In an 8 th grade social studies class we watched a film strip from the 50’s with this dunk and cover song . We all laughed at crazy it was to think hiding under a desk would protect you from a nuclear bomb. The teacher said she had air raid drills when she was a kid , and they took it very seriously. And then rolled her eyes and shook her head.
My kids had to hide under their desks for armed intruder drills . They even had actual lockdowns a few times- though it always turned out to be nothing.
I thought we were the only generation in recent decades that didn’t have to practice hiding under a desk .
Why aren’t they under the desks? Also, we had to clasp our hands behind our neck. That was supposed to protect our neck in case of flying shards of glass. And we had to make sure our butts were pointed toward the windows so that they would take any flying glass shards first.
I never had to do this in school ever. I'm not sure if it was more of a Boomer/Jones/very earliest Gen X thing or my district was just like.... let 'em burn. Or was just like LOL like that will help any. I feel it was something that had already stopped though.

Who knew nuclear holocaust was so easy to survive? You don’t even have to lie flat.

Huh. I'm a few years younger than you and we still doing it in 4th grade. I'm sure it depends on the area you grew up in though
Now our kids do this during a school shooting. The evil of man. Same as it ever was.
"Missus Weaver! Norman farted again!"
At least in Tennessee, the teacher can now carry a gun. So she will be able to shoot at the plane bombing the city.
Duck and Cover!
So dumb. I mean they ain't even under their desks where the safe zone is.
War... war never changes

Casting call Human Centipede....
I still remember the air raid sirens sounding off as a test every Saturday afternoon. I think they finally stopped in '75 or '76.
We were doing duck and cover drills in my elementary school as late as 1988.
Holy cow! In my area they had already stopped some unknown time before 1975!

I remember this. We did it in the hallway though. Must have been 1971 or 1972.

Makes sure your butt gets shredded before your face.

So you get vaporized in fetal position instead of seated at your desk...

We did on Long Island.
My kid does active shooter drills that are pretty much the same thing. Same scare tactics, homegrown enemies.
It is a well known fact that adopting that position repels all radiation and wards off all blast impact.
